I currently have all A’s 4.0 gpa as a pure mathematics major in my first year of university. Hopefully I can keep this up and have my transcript look like yours.
@@shmooveyea My school doesn't have +'s or -'s. A 90% is the same as 100%, a 4.0. I have a 4.0 GPA as well, but it would probably be like 3.9ish at most other schools tbh
My 2nd semester was also the best, and it all went downhill from there. Second year first semester was my worst, got a C in one course because I was very stressed that semester. My first and only C, but also a bunch of B's, B+'s, and B-'s. My last few years weren't much better. I peaked in second semester of first year. First semester in undergrad physics I failed two classes (Classical Mechanics I and Intro to mathematical analysis) and I was devastated... I'd never failed a class in my life, in fact I had like 100% perfect grades elementary school through high school. In hindsight it was quite humbling but I did get pretty depressed for a while. Then I started caring more about learning and enjoying uni and my grades have been better since.
Unfortunately, the school system has adopted a "no-one can fail" attitude. I know of people who did very well in senior highschool, but dropped out of university studies (in their favourite subjects at school) because their first semester grades were very poor.
That probably means you're an above average learner since you didn't have to learn much for high school and the transition to uni just started off quite roughly but on the other hand it means you probably have to put in less effort than most other people, you just had to get into the groove of things. No need to worry or be hard on yourself and all the best to you and your future academical endeavors.
@@geromep5383 hey man these things are almost arbitrary what matters is learning from failure that's the only way we become better not by lying to oursleves :)

I was doing well at school, but had no social life, which kinda resulted in a major depression at the start of my uni life lol. But I moved out now and it's getting better, my grades are like my late school days again :P

huge difference here is an A on her scale is as low as 80%, Over here that's a B. And at my old university 70% is one of the cutoff points for being forced to retake a course.
That means the standards for achievement of those marks is different. A 80% at different universities will not be equivalent, the standard of work needed will be different and so that's reflected in the grade boundaries.
You young students keep getting it wrong! In the US, 70% is a weak performance. That's like a bottom 10% or so. In the UK or UK patterned system, 70% at Oxford in the UK is a big achievement, but in America it's near the bottom. The problem with your school is GRADE INFLATION. Simple and straight - and this is the problem with almost ALL US universities
Tibees, you are absolutely an amazing mind. Receiving “A”s is quite the compliment to one’s mindset and feelings of societal worth. It can become part of ones self-image to the extent that anything deviating from “A” can feel like an embarrassment. It is good to remember that grades based on test scores and subjective scores on papers are only samples at a specific time in life. In actuality, we can have our whole lifetime to learn what we wish to know, and this makes life all the more interesting. Also, knowledge is useful, but the right use of knowledge is wisdom and powerful. What uses and projects for the knowledge you have do you think are worthy of your time? Ultimately, we have a limited lifespan, so it gets down to what we value: such things as preservation of the human species, vs. expanding human knowledge, vs. entertaining, vs. enhancing human efficiency and preservation of the environment, etc. Education is preparation to do something with one’s life. However, we don’t always land where we had planned. Whatever you apply your mind too, I’m sure will be benefited. Make it a good life!
If you guys look at her grade scale, you can see that it actually differs from most American ones. Her A+ is the entire A range for most schools in the US and her normal A is around a B+. Finally the B+ is a C+ in the US and if you can sort of understand the system she was upset because a B is equivalent to a C in using ur system. Also don’t get me wrong her grades are still astounding though I hope this clears some things up. Edit: Also for people wondering how she got into college at 17, it is because that is the age that I know people in the UK go to college so she might be in the UK or Canada though I don’t fully understand their school system. If Tibees sees this comment just know that I envy your school system since you can learn advanced subjects faster.
@@honkhonk8009 It's not the same as the US. I currently go to public university in the US. Good job 👍🏻 these are grades you should be proud of. Surprised that it takes only 3 years in Australia to complete Bachelors degree as opposed to 4. Work load in every semester is huge . I don’t think it’s good for the students mental health if I am honest. Best of luck in your future endeavors 👍🏻 I am currently 3rd year Chemical Engineering student.
AFAIK, in Aus & NZ like in UK you'd need to have done 2 years of A level to even get into Uni. That's worth a good year off the start of a degree course. For instance, in A level Math you'd learn differential and integral calculus, linear algebra etc. In the English system you either leave at 16 after O level (called GCSE these days) or stay to 18 and do 3 or 4 subjects at A level.
Those are terrific grades, Toby - you have every right to be proud of your efforts! At 11:38 you talk about not going out, etc, while doing your undergraduate course. This was my experience, too, and sometimes I wanted to go out but there was work to be done. I beg to differ at 10:59 regarding no-one really being interested in grades at the end of one's degree - my first and second employer (within my first year after graduating at an engineer) were very interested in my grades. However; since then, no-one has been interested as it's the experience which counts more.
Me before uni : "I'm gonna try hard and excel through my degree." Me at uni : "one extra year might not be a bad idea..." Tibee : "While I was a student, I didn't really go out, I didn't party." Me : "oh, me neither..."

I'm currently studying for my applied radiation physics exam as part of the RANZCR Radiology training program. Came across this channel and found it intriguing that someone would share their grades. Then the photos of UC and Tekapo....I lived in Ilam right next Uni Hall in 2012 coming from Otago to start clinical rotations at the christchurch clinical campus. We didn't have a library or study spaces at the clinical campus due to the earthquakes. I'd spent almost every evening UC's main library leeching its warmth to save money on power and grab a comfortable spot to study. And the Mt John picture....Camping every year in tekapo with a mandatory midnight hike up Mt John was a ritual. Thank you for sharing this video and in particular the photos of UC/Christchurch and Tekapo. It was a pleasant surprise and brings back so many good memories as well as a little sadness thinking back to simpler times.
Thank you for this inspirational video. This gave me the motivation I needed. Also, I totally agree with you on seeing working hard not as sacrificing.
Even in your worst semester, you got amazing grades. In my worst semester I got 2 7's (the equivalent would be C i guess) and I still thought I did pretty good 😩
@@Vemy ahaha I self taught too. My teacher is worse than me in English, my grades probably are going to get lower just because of his mistakes in making the tests. Right now, I want to learn Japanese. School is so stressful, those homeworks ;-; I hope education system will get better in the future. School is supposed do be fun and just a little bit stressful (right amount of stress) because it actually helps you learn but if the stress is too much it's bad for you because you just become "lazy" what I mean is that you become anxious and if you're anxious it's just hard to start something (procrastinate)
Very impressive! Particularly impressive that you did so well in both experimentally and theoretically oriented classes. Also wonderful that you stuck out that partial differential equations class.
Interesting that you don't have any humanities or liberal arts classes.. When I went to "university" in the US we were required to take about 20% of our classes that were in humanities, arts, social studies and science (outside our major).
idk if it's a way to squeeze more tuition money out of students, but my uni forces all science students to take a certain amount of arts/humanities/writing credits that I think account for ~10-15% of our degree? When Toby said that her uni actually "allows" students to take credits outside of their degree I was a bit surprised. that and seeing her transcript which is made up almost entirely of courses relevant to her degree lmao
To be fair, I also studied math and I did not need to do anything beyond Engl 1 and 2. My sister studied Biology and she only had to do 1 humanities course. She took some 'politically radical' electives tho as did I. I actually did alot of theatre acting and started a Trans-support group but I never needed to take any credits for it. Being forced to take tons of lib arts courses is not true in my experience. I also don't like the our American attitude of delegitimizing higher ed. coming from people who are literally going to college. If you are attending/attended Uni with that mindset, it just tells me you are gonna be chronically underemployed after graduation.
It's a trade off, in the us you get bird courses so your semester are not overloaded, but it cost more. Or 3 years of doing 5 math classes a semester (for a math major for example).
I go to a university in Australia that does that. I liked it, as it was helpful to see what else I was interested in. However it obviously isn't as helpful to people who are super set on what they are doing. So I'd be careful writing it off as a ploy or as straight up bad, it has pros and cons.
Wooow this is so different from my experience. I am also a physicist in Mexico, but its so diferent from yourself. First I took 6 years to graduate jajajaja it "should" take 4 years, but I know only 2 people that where able to do that, and the reason for this is that here we took 2 electrodinamic curses, 2 quantum mechanic curses, 3 mathimatical method curses, 4 math courses, an statistical thermodinamic course, 3 experimantl fisics, and other stuff! It feels like we covered a lot, but now that I am studying my masters degree after a 2 year break (becouse litteraly my university broke me mentaly) I would think that a more humane and much less robotic way of teaching, such as in your college, would be much better. I think many people stop loving the phyisics and start liking the pain. But coodoes to you! you where such a good student! Congratulations!
That's so cool, I never knew you from New Zealand, I recently enrolled for the science course at Canterbury as well, major in physics and maths with plans to do a master's degree
What's rly surprising to me is that she is able to complete a double major in just 3 years. Here in America, half my classes I'm required to take are general education courses unrelated to my major and it's gonna take me 4 years at least just to graduate with one degree.
When it’s all said and done it’s going to take me 5 years to get a bachelors in physics and astronomy and a minor in math. But to be fair I started my physics major late.
What I find most impressive is the scope of coursework and the consistently high marks when taking a full load and doing much more outside of class. I did well as an undergraduate, but aside from some summers when I worked and carried a very light course load, I never had nearly the distractions that Tobey had.
Being a victim of insatiable curiosity I could never focus on any one area. UA-cam fills that bill quite nicely. Thanks for the humble display of your higher education results.
I'm confused by the paradigm of a 100 point system...where I'm at in US it's a four point scale for every class 3.4-4 is an A, 2.7-3.39 B, 2-2.69 C, I'm not sure what the D-F cut-off is

Grades doesn't mean anything. You can retain and regurgitate whole encyclopedias of knowledge/information, and even understand all of it, but question, how do you apply it? Without those things, Its like having a souped up ferrari (nice to have with SO much potential) but only remains potential, useless, if you can't go anywhere with it / doesn't move.......
Your probably sick of hearing this name, but Nikola Tesla had both.
A B is basically a D in the US

I can’t imagine the pressure she put on herself to reach those grades.
Like she said, she enjoyed the process of hard work.

Easier than u'd think if u just minmax the work u put in for each class
@@vk2ig write this as a comment. This needs more likes and needs to be seen by everyone. If you don't do it, then I will kill you
That probably means you're an above average learner since you didn't have to learn much for high school and the transition to uni just started off quite roughly but on the other hand it means you probably have to put in less effort than most other people, you just had to get into the groove of things. huge difference here is an A on her scale is as low as 80%, Over here that's a B.

Last night I had a nightmare because I started my senior year, so there goes that I guess.

AFAIK, in Aus & NZ like in UK you'd need to have done 2 years of A level to even get into Uni. That's worth a good year off the start of a degree course. For instance, in A level Math you'd learn differential and integral calculus, linear algebra etc. In the English system you either leave at 16 after O level (called GCSE these days) or stay to 18 and do 3 or 4 subjects at A level.
in my country it takes at least 5😢

School is so stressful, those homeworks ;-; I hope education system will get better in the future. School is supposed do be fun and just a little bit stressful (right amount of stress) because it actually helps you learn but if the stress is too much it's bad for you because you just become "lazy" what I mean is that you become anxious and if you're anxious it's just hard to start something (procrastinate)
Very impressive! Particularly impressive that you did so well in both experimentally
and theoretically oriented classes. Also wonderful that you stuck out that partial differential equations class.
Interesting that you don't have any humanities or liberal arts classes.. When I went to "university" in the US we were required to take about 20% of our classes that were in humanities, arts, social studies and science (outside our major).
tibees didn't study black womens ethnic art history? racist! unsubscribe
idk if it's a way to squeeze more tuition money out of students, but my uni forces all science students to take a certain amount of arts/humanities/writing credits that I think account for ~10-15% of our degree?
That's why school here is so expensive
When it’s all said and done it’s going to take me 5 years to get a bachelors in physics and astronomy and a minor in math. But to be fair I started my physics major late.
