Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Ninja Theory and published by Xbox Game Studios. The game is the sequel to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. It is scheduled to release for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on 21 May 2024.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is a third-person action-adventure game. It carries over the concepts and gameplay elements of its predecessor, including permadeath, utilizing puzzles and runes to advance, and an examination of Senua's mental state. A new fighting system, more dynamic and realistic than the previous one, will also be included in the game. Along with Senua's own background and connections, the game will go deeper into the Norse mythology and history that served as inspiration for the narrative. Combat designer Juan Fernández explained that Ninja Theory is raising the bar with respect to Hellblade II combat. Juan Fernández pointed out that fewer than 20 people worked on the previous game's development, and Ninja Theory has increased its production efforts for the follow-up. As a result, there is going to be more complex combat and a wider variety of opponents in Hellblade II.

Something weird is going on with the whole gaming industry bro, similar to the depravity of the music and entertainment industry.
Nothing weird. Just woke progressivism perversely infecting every entertainment medium and ruining everything series people grew up enjoying in the name of pushing a political message.

My guess is that Microsoft already decided to shut down Ninja Theory as part of their plan to cut costs and focus on "blockbuster" titles, so they don't really care anymore about the game. That makes me really worried about inXile and Obsidian (Avowed is supposed to release this year).
Had similar thought. We didn't hear about the closing yet, because they want the title to be released to get some money back, then they'll likely close it.
Its terrifying how valid this theory is.💔
They know that if they put this on the front page of game pass a lot of people will play it, but probably know that very little people will buy it directly or sign of Game Pass for it from metrics of previous titles. So why bother to market it? If they do not shutdown Ninja Theory they will enforce changes on their development pipeline or strategy. 7 years for a linear 8 hour game from a company with 120 employees is crazy. Or they need to make smaller games faster or take 5 years and deliver something like God of War. Business wise Hellblade II for them is already a failure.
Yeah, Obsidian hasn't exactly been knocking it out of the park lately, and _Avowed_ looks like absolute ass. So... we'll most likely be seeing the death of Obsidian soon.
I really wish I were a multi-millionaire, because I would love to create an indie studio and snatch up all the good talent that Microsoft is throwing in the trash right now.
To me, if Microsoft shuts down Obsidian and/or InExile then that’s on MS. That’s what they get for taking two developers known for specific kinds of games and asking them to do something “like Bethesda but better.”
Avowed should never have been made as this “Elder Scrolls like” and what business do InExile have making anything first-person?? PoE and Numenera were isometric and BG3 (plus Owlcat with Pathfinder and Rogue Trader) have categorically proven that there is an appetite for traditional, isometric RPGs. This whole thing about “isometric doesn’t sell” or “it’s too niche” is absolute bullshit.
The amount of press they have had for this game is....silence
Dealing with marketing as a developer reminds me of a joke :
One day a chicken comes to a pig and is like, hey we should start a diner, and the pig is like okay?
And the chicken is like, yeah it'll be great we'll call it "Ham and eggs"
And the pig is like, I dunno, I'm skeptical of this proposal, if things go south I'm committed and you are just involved.
That is often how it feels spending a large amount of time and effort creating a project and then interacting with marketing that will just be involved in a much narrower context and is wrangling multiple projects and ultimately just has a lot more capacity to just wash their hands of the situation if things going south.
I've been waiting for this game for years and had no idea it was being released this month
Then you just wasn't paying attention.
Then you werent even that excited if you didnt know that is releasing soon.
Don't listen to other comments saying you weren't actually excited. You know better than they do about how you feel and what your life looks like.
Yes this game has very little marketing. It's been coming for a long time so I don't blame you for being excited and somehow still falling out of the loop.
Played the first game 3 times and absolutely loved it. Feels like it’s been years since I heard anything about a sequel. And only found out last week it was coming out. Definitely very little media in general around the game. None the less despite not being aware of the game’s release I probably way more excited than @Krainz337

I feel like these past 3-4 weeks have been really tough for the games industry as a whole. Just controversy after controversy!
current development processes and practices are not sustainable. Games need to be cheaper, smaller in scope, and need to be produced by a team that is consistent, reliable, and one that has a clear vision from leadership.
games are too expensive, too big, with lack of clear visions from the get-go.
oh boo hoo billion dollar companies are having a minor slump who cares?
@@joshuabenton3785 Yep. Leadership is so important. In every business but especially creative works. Almost all of these recent failures were leadership issues it seems. There also seems to be a trend of bad ideas pushed down from corporate and the devs just don't have passion for the project, that is a recipe for disaster
Actually it's been 3 to 4 years already. It's nuts.
@@joshuabenton3785 Michael Does Life is saying exactly that for years, but nobody never listens and doesn't even care.
As soon as they announced Hellblade 2 wouldnt be full priced i knew something was up. This was meant to be one of their bigger titles this year with insane production. So something tells me there is a compromise that we dont know about yet. Plus the late cycle for ads, this game is prepping to be a 4 hour tech demo.
Well the first game is roughly 5-6 hours. If it's like the first game, i think ppl are gonna enjoy it. But yeah something is off
Yep
It's a five hours game, the pricing is absolutely justified.
Love that people are assuming the studio with a passionate staff and good track record somehow made a disastrous sequel for no discernible reason, rather than the multi-million dollar KNOWN TO BE SHITTY company is probably just being shitty as usual. Because no company has any actual motivation NOT to be straight-up evil in our current economic situation.
Was it, though? Hellblade is in the same league as games like Plague Tale, The Order 1886 and Ryse Son of Rome. It's a one-shot 6 hour long game.
My conspiracy theory is that NT is among the studios to be shut down, coz the execs believe that Hellblade wouldn't be a massive success (maybe becoz of the nature of the game). So the absence of marketing might just be to avoid "just a week ago you were promoting their games and making big claims".
My conspiracy theory is that Bleeding Edge, which was a flop, played some role in this decision.
Which is a bummer since it represents their creative freedom. It is art.
Doubtful
(maybe becoz of the nature of the game) the point of this youtube video is to COMPLETELY MISUNDERSTAND THE GAME ITSELF and market it like its a AAA title like Crash Bandacoot made for kids.
Conspiracy. Microsoft is sabotaging Hellblade 2 so they can shut down Ninja Theory.
Little random but this reminds me of Netflix and the way they marketed the third season of daredevil as a way to lower numbers on day one.

I really hope it’s not crap. Microsoft and Sony are making very questionable decisions lately.
They don't trust their own game studios anymore. This is the end result that we're seeing. They themselves don't know how to vet a game anymore either. They are clueless; gamers should be managing and directing Microsoft's game studios.
After the failure of Bleeding Edge, I think Microsoft got nervous. What was the deal with that game, anyway?
I suspect that after they bought Activision, higher-up managers got involved (since it's so much money), and the first thing they did was cut everything that wasn't going to perform in the Call of Duty range, since it's basically meaningless to them anyway. If you have ten franchises, and one makes 95% of the money, why even waste time on the other 5%?

Maybe the silence is because they wanted to shut down Ninja Theory regardless of the quality of the game, & they were afraid of hyping the game too much lest they got the pushback like when they announced the shutdown of Arkane Austin & Tango Gameworks
I only just saw this and I'm quite peeved about that. Arkane Austin did Prey, that's so shit that they got canned because of Redfall - which was so badly mismanaged. Just a prime example of executive meddling killing an amazing studio with a deep history.
And wtf? Tango too? That's crazy!!
It'll be a good game, but its short and an XBox exclusive, so its basically going to be a Game Pass game. Few will buy it. The studio won't make much on it, so maybe they don't want to spend on marketing. Game Pass isn't good for the industry, and this studio won't make money on the books for it, so hopefully it doesn't go the way of Hi-Fi Rush.
Game Pass is the best thing to happen to the consumers. For game publishers not so much. It's because of Xbox that playstation also implemented PS Extra on their system.
It's not exclusive to xBox. It can be purchased on Steam.
Gamepass is the worst idea to ever happen in gaming industry. It doesn't quite work as well as video streaming services.
I honestly believe Xbox/MS have realized that GamePass is killing their brand and that no amount of marketing can help. Remember, they went out and got Bethesda because they thought BGS would be their new flagship studio and sell GamePass subs en masse. They marketed Starfield for literally years, and ramped up said marketing in the months before release.
Hugely anticipated game, with the pre-release showcase being dubbed by many as the best deep dive in gaming history. All the stars aligned (pardon the pun), no competition to ruin the day-1 drop, aaaaaand Starfield didn’t even increase GamePass subs by more than a couple percentage points. We’re talking single digit upticks in subscribers.
The GamePass model is a failure as there is 0 room for growth (and that’s before the inevitable price hike that’s coming later in the year). So MS is thinking, why should they spend money advertising the game if it’s not going to make a difference? A lot of us tried to warn the Xbox crowd that GP was bad for gaming, and that was before the nearly $100 billion acquisition spree. They’re spread too thin with too little oversight and a business model that actively works against them.
I reallyyy love how you subtly incorporate Asassin's Creed Ezio theme in the background. Never fails to take me on a nostalgic trip
Based on what they just did with Tangoworks, I wouldn't be surprised if Ninja Theory has a really bad time after Hellblade 2 comes out

Wait, didn‘t they state that the game is going to be Digital only? Maybe that‘s the reason they don‘t give it the conventional marketing treatment. They‘ll just put it front and center on GamePass, and save themselves the distribution and marketing cost.
It's MICROSOFT.
They don't care because they DONT HAVE TO CARE.

Is it better to have those 90 hours slop developed by Ubisoft in 2 years?
@@GroovyLeon not by Ubisoft lol, maybe another studio with more talent

I've seen hundreds of comments saying, "Xbox is dying"...
Xbox has been dying for many years, ever since the XBONE in 2016, and the weird focus on combining TV features and Gaming, instead of just focusing on making actual games.. which is what a gaming console is for.
My stance on HB2 is one of disinterested and confusion. Disinterested because, even though the first was really cool and unique, it wasn't some groundbreaking thing that raised any bars (i.e. Breath of the Wild, Witcher 3, RDR2, GTA), it felt and played like a really polished, artistic AA game, and they honestly should've just stuck with that on the sequel. Instead, and this is where my confusion stems from, they're spending Starfield levels of time and resources like this is something gamers have been waiting for and hyping over for years, and they're not even talking about it this close to release.
At this point I'm expecting the next xbox showcases to just be satya nadela en sarah bond coming on stage and announcing which studios they're going to close that season.
A repost? Or new video?
That's what I was wondering, but this one is different than the last. I think he may have something similar on his live channel.
Slow news day. Nothing to talk about but people need content
so what I'm gathering is that these huge mega corporations are spending millions and billions of dollars buying out there "competition" In the form of other studios then years and even months later in some cases are deciding to shut them down for the sake of cost cutting and saving money? then why buy the studio to begin with? theres something going on in the gaming industry right now that doesn't feel right. Microsoft and Sony are monopolizing gaming right in front of our eyes. Small Indie studios and up-and-coming studios need to be more appreciated and supported by us.
They want intellectual property, not people who made it.
IP makes money, people cost money.
@@Stanjaraand yet they've got hundreds of IPs under their belt already that they're doing fuck all about.
You say that but there are things like the China hero project which black myth wukong is apart of, that Chinese dark souls also got a cut (wo-long).
I just find this very funny because this is how I remember it but they showed like 4 Chinese dark souls then an open world game based around dress-up I just couldn't stop laughing thinking it's stupid but the actual numbers the dress up game has is near LoL player numbers, build it and they will come I guess.
@@Stanjara People make the IPs that make money. If Microsoft and Xbox had any real _long-term_ business sense, they'd realize now is the time to build their studios up. Not tear them down in an effort to consolidate resources. It's as you wrote, though: They want intellectual properties. Not the people who made them. Once these corporate conglomerates acquire a studio with a prestige portfolio, the developers are at their mercy, since they are viewed as expendable in the short-term. Unless they're considered essential to business, which is a rarity.
interesting assessment
I really liked the first Hellblade, and I've been a Ninja Theory fan for years. I was really excited when the sequel got announced..... And then it was revealed to be an Xbox/PC exclusive - platforms I don't own and I don't have the possibility of getting. It's hard to be excited for a game that I know I won't have the ability to play for at least a year if not longer, if ever.
I answered that poll about seeing marketing for the game with "Yes, online" but that's literally only because I follow Ninja Theory on Twitter, elsewhere I haven't seen anything at all until *this week*
I think that a part of their gaming division management want Hellblade 2 to fail so they can pull financing from the smaller studios towards several large projects like CoD which are "guaranteed" to make money.
7 years to develop a game that will be 7-8 hours long?!?!?!? WTF??

"Our analysts don't think this will sell, so we're not marketing it"

My guess is that Microsoft has already decided to close Nina Theory months ago. Which is why they're doing the bare minimum to promote the game. Microsoft no longer care if the game is a commercial success or failure since the decision to close down Ninja Theory has already been taken, So they simply don't want to 'waste' money to promote a game from a studio they've already decided to close down months ago. I don't see any other reason why they wouldn't promote it otherwise.
Cause, they went all in on the marketing of an awful game ( Redfall ) , they went all in on the marketing of a game walking the line between 'meh' and 'bad' ( Starfield ) , but they won't spend a dollar to promote game who sounds like it's a gonna be a great one ? This is way too illogical to me. Which is why, to me, the only possible explanation to this, is the fact that Microsoft doesn't care how the game will do commercially, cause the decision to shut down the studio has already been taken months ago. It's not that Microsoft don't believe in the game, it's simply that the studio's faith has already been sealed, so they simply don't care anymore.
yeah, its seems like their strategy moved to big IP blockbuster games, so they dont really care about smaller games (and yes i still consider Hellblade franchise a smaller AA game)
In English, there are no spaces inside the parenthesis (like this), same with commas.
Crazy how just one bad decision ( F u Xbox ) could sent an entire studio to an early grave. Hellblade could sell like hot cakes and they would still get shutdown
I wonder if the failure of Bleeding Edge ( that game everyone forgot existed ) had anything to do with the decision to ( possibly ) close the studio.
It's not a game, it's a 30 fps cutscene spectacle. The marketing team probably realizes at this point people want games, not cutscenes.
This is actually a genious marketing... everyone is now doing the marketing for them. Think about it. You make a meme about how bad your marketing is and suddenly everyone if giving you free marketing.
I was so excited for this game since the first reveal trailer. That trailer was awesome and featured a song from one of my favorite bands, Heilung. I loved the first game, played it a lot, 100% it on PS and finished it many times. I had wallpaper in my room and had background on my phone. But now i don't think im gonna get the second one. First of all, because of the decision to go digital only, like Alan Wake 2, I am not spending money to rent a game and not own it. Secondly, the games are very expensive and I can't spend so much money on a game that will be a relatively short experience. I got the first game for 15 bucks on PS disk. I like owning my games, so I don't use subscription services like game pass.
Also, on reddit, in the last week or two, every second ad has been for this game, so I wouldnt say there is zero marketing.
The combat looks so much better than the 1st game
Sure Hope so
Yeah, but now theyve limited combat to only one enemy at a time. Thats a downgrade from the first game.
@@alostcause4035 Not exactly great news
Xbox is dying
Yeah, potentially as console but I don’t think they care. They’re the biggest publisher now.
Nah this guy is just a sensationalist just like you
This saddens me.
WOW, no way!
Indeed
I have heard more marketing for Hellblade 2 for “not having any official marketing” than other recent releases. Animal Well and Crab Souls kinda just dropped out of nowhere, albeit these titles are definitely indie.
I only know about this sequel because my friend is waiting and talking about this game's release date all the time for a while now, it did seem pretty cool from the concept and the trailer, the whole thing about not knowing what's real and what's not, will definitely check it out in the future but it's really quite odd that the game has so little marketing and i haven't seen any ads despite using youtube/reddit daily.
"Between 7 and 8 hours long"
The first game was 7 or 8 hours long. Ninja theory stated that Hell Blade 2 is half as long as the first, so it's a 3 to 4 hour game at max.
You are flatout lying.
@@mikebrown9051he did say that
They just dropped a 20 minute deep dive into PSYCHOSIS. Literally everything except uncut gameplay is being shown. Such a weird way to market a video game.
No raw gameplay is a big red flag
there was a video like that for the first game as well, and it was the same. so i don't think there not being much gameplay in the video is inherently a red flag. the difference is the first game had lots of other videos at this point of gameplay, story as well as tons of dev dearies about the development. It's like these two games were made with opposite approaches when it comes to openness to the public. I guess Xbox being in charge of marketing does that.
honestly, watching the psychosis video was one of the first time I've actually gotten excited for this game, and the original is one of my favorite games. I think it's because that video is some of the only marketing made by ninja theory themselves.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic Wow you're right, I just saw the original one. Here's hoping that the end result is similar, despite who seems to be running the marketing this time around.
Seriously haven't seen ANY advertising for Hellblade 2.
It's almost as if MS is trying to set Ninja Theory up for failure just so they can close them.
Any source for the background music for this video? Sounds familiar but can't remember the game its from for the life of me.
Ninja Theory statement: We're all very excited about our newest release Hellblade 2. Ohh yeah, like everyone else we're shitcanning 80% of our staff to celebrate.
Nothing is off. This is more of what the first game was. And the marketing has reached the people who are going to buy it. Just like the first game did.
No one is talking about it tho and its less than 2 weeks
They showed it at the game awards, released gameplay trailers and held a preview event, what more should they do? If you aren't aware of it releasing that is on you, you're not interested enough
Luke, I have respected you for a long time, but this kind of weeping before release... man, shape up
Microsoft is getting free advertising from everyone complaining there is no advertising. Who hasn't heard of Hellblade 2 at this point?
Exactly. Starfield too.
These same people said they were tired of seeing trailers just give them the game. Now they're complaining they don't see it enough.
fr lmao
It’s not good advertising though it’s going to make people want to stay and not check it out
Selling to Xbox is like taking the train to a concentration camp
Well if the ticket is free...
Notch.
Their marketing strategy seems to be "maybe the audience will mistakenly think it's called Helldivers 2 and buy it".
For one, a game that shows you how to stay calm and focused under pressure and chaos is probably not in their best interest.
Advertising when knowing that Gamepass canabalizes game sales is a hard pill to swallow.
Prob running at 20fps...
700p black bars, ps4 done this for the order in 2014 lol
I didn’t even know it had a release date until I saw a random video listing upcoming games. Haven’t seen a single ad or article. All I did was search the title to find this video
One year per hour of gameplay is crazy
Microsoft is in a very strange self destruction arc right now is seems
*xbox. MS is doing better than they've ever done
@@antarcticanman*Microsoft since they screwed up the latest Office, Windows 10 is being ended, 360 games are being pulled from Gamepass...
Just saw the first advertisement on twitch. Still not interested in the slightest.
It looks like a tech demo instead of a game that’ll be fun to play.
The first Hellblade game didn't have a marketing campaign either. So why is so weird that the sequel doesn't?
To be honest I don't remember seeing any advertising for Stellar Blade either. But, that seems to have done well
There has been trailers for the game in theaters. I went twice in the last two weeks and both times we got the hellblade trailer prior to our movie
Agents of Mayhem received a similar pre-release treatment before Volition was shuttered.
Is it too far fetched to think that Xbox is intentionally sabotaging Hellblade 2 so they can close Ninja Theory down?
I think you're spot on. They took Ninja from Sony and have done pretty much squat with them ever since
More cuts are supposedly on the way. Guess Ninja Theory is next on the chopping block. Might explain lack of marketing.
Ive been getting ads for it on MAX for about two weeks at this point but very far and few in between tbh
