- Hi everyone and welcome to Episode 9 of the Fraoch Knits podcast, a knitting podcast from the West of Ireland. It's great to be back with you all again.
My name is Áine and in this video I give an update on all my latest knitting projects. I also talk about the Celtic festival of Imbolc, the cross quarter day between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. And I chat about the pre Christian goddess Brigid and St. Brigid and customs and traditions surrounding both of these figures.

Hi Aine....thank you for all the inspiration. I started knitting in 2017, feeling deeply connected to my Irish roots... (great grandparents from Cork)... knitting and the knitting community kept me sane during Covid, and some personal loss... I was able to visit Ireland in 2019 and came home with a Saint Brigit’s cross, which is hanging proudly in my California home! Thank you for sharing your generous heart and beautiful projects.... I wish we were neighbors!

Maine is a place I would love to visit - especially in the winter with snow. We hardly ever get any snow here. The last time it really snowed was 13 years ago when my son was born - the snow lasted from the beginning of December to about mid way through January that year and one of the coldest nights was Christmas eve when it was minus 17 C. I love that kind of weather:) Hope you enjoy knitting and wearing the Moon Pulls. Happy knitting!!

I enjoyed your podcast and seeing how you are fixing/ repairing things to give them longer life! I have a few sweaters that if I would just adjust the neckline or make the sleeves longer, I would wear them a lot more.

Hi, my name is warron, yes I'm a man. Lol. I crochet, I'm 64 a widower,(I don't know why I think that's so important) anyway, I am beginning to learn to knit, ( I can long tail cast on.) I saw your Chanelle and I enjoy listening from knitters etc. So I decided to check your Chanelle out, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, along with the history. I just found your podcast and I've loved listening to you talk about knitting and Irish history and traditions! I'm American, but I recently traced my ancestry back to Belfast in the 1700s, and would love to visit someday to see if I have any distant relatives still living there

Thanks Aine another enjoyable episode. Very interesting information on Saint Brigid and her goddess precursor. Hope you have had enjoyable holiday. I do love the colour palette of Blackwattle yarns - amazing. Can I suggest if you can't repair the knit before it gets a hole with Duplicate Stitch, you try the Knitted Patch repair (UA-cam River City Yarns) they're both fun to do.

I heard about your podcast from a recommendation from the Knitty Stew. Wow, you have really knit a lot of sweaters in a short time. How wonderful that your son loves the sweaters you knit him so much and becomes engaged in choosing the design and colours. My skin is way to sensitive for Letlopi (not good for a Canadian with Icelandic heritage- lol), so I like the idea of the sweater with cuff and colour linings knit in softer yarns. Love the Irish history too. Have a great trip to Italy!

I really couldn't believe my luck when I found the discarded cast on in the colour I needed:) It's the simple pleasures in life that are the best:)

I loved seeing all your sweaters and listening to the history of Imbolc and St. Brigid. I have also knit a Felix sweater but it didn't come out as well as yours; I knit a size too big. I wear my Lopi Felix cardi all the time, it's so light and airy but now I want a stripy jersey version too. I think I will crochet around the collar though as my cardi version has really stretched out. So happy to see the coast at the end since I stay in the English Midlands, as far from the sea as it's possible to get :(

Thanks Stamatia, I'm delighted you enjoyed the latest episode........The Felix was such as pleasure to knit and I love wearing it. It wasn't blocked for the podcast and now that it is it's so soft......lettlopi when it's knit at such a loose gauge and after it's been washed is one of the softest most comfortable yarns. I fall in love with it every winter. And I honestly feel like I'm knitting with snow when using the white colour. Looking back at the podcast I was amazed at how the white plotulopi glowed on the screen when I was showing it. I have to visit Iceland next - another magical place!! Enjoying the snow in Italy for now.......I feel very lucky:) Hope you're doing well and enjoying the end of the winter and start of spring.

I think I am on track to do all the things I have been putting off like finishing unfinished projects and making alterations to be able to wear the things that I'm not happy with. But to motivate myself I try to intersperse these with new cast-ons like the Felix - this was a great project to satisfy the need to start something new without it being all consuming. Thanks for the well wishes re the holiday - really looking forward to it now. Snow in Ireland is very rare, we had none this winter, so I'm really looking forward to the trip to the snowy mountains.
@@fraochknits I’ve made the Felix cardigan and it’s one of my favorites. It’s a good way to keep motivating-casting on something new while working on the things that need to be finished. I had made a. Porty Pullover which was my most worn sweater and it had a hole right below the color work, so essentially I had to re-knit the most boring part, the body all over again. I just got it done and am enjoying the sweater again but now discovered a hole in the arm! Luckily, it’s something that can be mended and I don’t have to knit all over again.
I loved seeing your knitting and hearing about Imbolc and St. Brigid! Being Mexican I can really relate to the syncretic nature of Irish culture. It's so beautiful to have all these traditions living alongside each other!

Just loved this beautiful broadcast....... I am in Northfield, Minnesota USA.... My grandson is in the Air Force and was over in Germany with his wife and boys..and their favorite place to go was IRELAND.. they went three times...and wished there was an airbase there. you are wonderful in your passion for life and knitting, and knowledge of it... I just loved your son's sweater and the fact he wore it every day..how sweet and beautiful of him to do that. as he felt all the love in that sweater...PLUS it was just beautiful .. I would wear it every day too. bit for a son to do that..to me is b eyond joy to hear..Your son is a wonderful young man.. I hope you let us know when wou come back.. notify us ok. Thanks Merri for your really lovely comments. I'm so glad you enjoyed the podcast. I'm very lucky that my son is interested in wearing what I knit for him. He is artistic himself and has a very good eye for colour - better than mine at times I think - and he chose the colours for the last sweater I knit for him! He also loves the simplicity of wearing the same thing every day and the lopi sweaters are so warm and comfortable - he never has to worry about feeling cold.
You are so blessed to have him to be your techno guy.I have a son too...Erick.. he too is a wonderful son. He is a writer and artist ..and we are working on his book Bart Jenkins and the Magic Bag... a story in progress about his life.. being severely made fun of...and how it affected him. He is legally blind but a college graduate.. going to the blind School here in South Minnesota faribault..the school in Little House on the Praierie books if you know of those...anyway he had to have a liver transplant in 2020 out of the blue... bang.... but came through it three months in hosptial..and is a miracle. He is well now ..had a few surgeries on his eyes of late.. those going well too. He is resilient for sure. and is the one who got me hoooked up on a computer years back..just like your son has. Hope you have a lovely holiday and post please when you get back ok? ALso do you sell your sweaters at all? I could save and buy one.. they are so full of Love..and love that y our son loves the colors... You are a good team!!! Hope to hear when you get back.. Love, Merri and Erick

I can't believe your son went to the blind school that features in the Little House on the Prairie books. Reuben and myself absolutely love LHOTP... during the pandemic we watched every single episode of the TV series - all 9 seasons. And last winter we watched them through again and only recently finished. I love the simple way of life it portrays and the acting is really good in them. And they remind me of being a child watching them when they first came out in the 1970s and 80s.
Your son's book sounds like an amazing project! I wish him well with it. I'm so glad to hear he came through his liver transplant- that must have been a very difficult time for you both...
I don't sell any of my knits. I was recently asked to do a commission for a neighbour but I said no...I have so many family members who want me to knit them something and I prefer not to feel under pressure. Knitting for me is a hobby. I think I would spoil it if I decided to do it for money. I have considered selling ones that I don't wear anymore - and I knit so many these days that my drawers are getting very full:) Maybe one day I will do that....

Hi Jill - thanks for your lovely comments! That's a knitted shawl that's hanging over the back of the chair. I talk about it in the colourwork episode of my podcast - it's the pattern that got me to pick up my knitting needles again not having knit since primary school. It's by Marja de Haan and is called the Shetland Shawl.

Lynn, thanks a million for spotting that mistake - I must have been half asleep when I was following that pattern. I will rip back to the top of the motif and reknit it - and if I need a few extra rows of plain stocking stitch I'm sure it will fit me when I'm finished!!

Lovely tshirt. Could you please link where you found the measurements / decreases for the round yoke. I usually knit from the bottom up and would like to make a yoke. But I'm quite busty. I have been looking online but haven't found anything yet. Thank you.
Hi Anneke, thanks for your interest in the podcast. I didn't use a pattern for the yoke section of that T-shirt. It was my first time working out yoke decreases on my own. Basically I took the measurement at the sleeve separation (bust circumference) and the measurement that I wanted at the neck and subtracted one from the other which left me with the number of inches I needed to decrease. Based on my gauge I then worked out the number of stitches that equated to. Once I knew the number of stitches I had to decrease between bust and neck, I decided on how many decrease rounds I would do - I think it was about 3. So I divided that number by 3. This gave me the number of decreases I needed to do on each round then I just decreased that number evenly across each of the rounds. I distributed the 3 decrease rounds evenly across the required depth of the yoke (I think I decided to a 9 or 10 inch depth but you can decide based on your own measurements).
I was thrilled that it worked out so well. I hope you can understand my explanation. I'm sure there are books available that explain it better. There may even be a you tube video to explain the concept. If you have ever knitted a round yoked sweater you will be familiar with how the decreases work - you could even try following a yoked sweater pattern and adapting it to whatever you are knitting. @@fraochknits Thank you. I guess that is the kind of maths I would do. But I'm quite busty, so need to take that into account. And I want the shoulder part to be quite far towards the neckline. I will fiddle around with it. See where it leads. I had started a top down yoke a while ago. But I didn't quite get the result when it came to splitting for the sleeves. It is good I'm working with a yarn that I can easily rip back. :)
