Fraoch Knits Ep 23: I Sewed a Zip Into My Cardigan - YAY!! Knitting, sewing and Irish Harp Music!!
Hi everyone! Long time no see. I'm back after a three month break from podcasting. There was lots happening this summer including having the roof replaced on my house and time away on holidays and lots of work in between. I also learned how to use a sewing machine and have finally sewn the zip into my Decision Cardigan. So I've lots to show you from the past 3 months of making. Sit back and relax with a cup of tea and join me for just over an hour of crafting chat.
For those new here my name is Áine and I podcast from the west of Ireland. My content is mostly knitting but I have introduced sewing into this one. I also include a section on Irish culture/history/myth/legend at the end of the podcast. This time is no different but I'm leaving it as a surprise for those stalwarts who manage to make it to the end........Enjoy!!!!

    Well done on the beautiful cardigan!! The colour agrees with you .. a lot! thanks for sharing your memories of your mum behind the sewing machine, similar memories here. Sewed when I was younger, that turned into quilting and these days there is a mix of knitting/crocheting/sewing/quilting by machine where the mood takes me. Och .. you playing the harp Aine ... goosebumps .... fitting as "opening" music! It "fits" the landscape. Till next time, take care, happy whatever you are doing hihi, XXD

    Thanks Aine, great to see you again. Cardigan looks fab, can see your dress in a woollen fabric for winter (have to say I'm tempted). Boy have you been bitten by the bug. When you were talking of your mother, I could hear the sound of a pinned pattern being cut out on our dinning room table by mine (don't cut paper with my good scissors!). And thanks for braving playing the harp for us. What history behind that, glad it's having a revival.

    Lovely to see you again. Your zip cardigan is beautiful and the colour is great on you. I have just finished a DK sweater that I am so pleased with - Lenu by Ankestrick. The shoulder construction is different to any I have done before and fits beautifully. My next cast on is a DK cardigan and recommended by one of the women in my knit group, as the shoulders don’t slip off at all. It is the Mabel cardigan by Isabell Kraemer. I love the Cranberry Gose and have added it to my favourites! Thank you from Vancouver.

    Oh, Áine, that was a lovely tune. I love all sorts of Irish music (surprise, surprise). Must be in the blood. Your cabled sweater is an absolute masterpiece. The zip does make it look professional. Sadly, I totally lost my knitting mojo for the entire summer. Not even socks were knit. Just yesterday, I felt inspired to pick up the needles and now I'm raring to go. I have worn my knitted hoodie so much that I think I need another. My sewing career was halted many years ago. I just don't like doing it at all. I still have a few yards of lovely linen that never got used. Now, I throw it over the worn furniture and it feels so good. We've had a summer of grandchildren and adventuring near home. No regrets there. We had a ton of fun. We're also in renovation mode so I know how disruptive that is. Knitting will help!

      Hi Ann, so good to hear from you on here. While I love sewing, I'm not mad about the process.....I just can't wait to get the end product, but so far it's worth the effort.....I use knitting to completely wind down between infrequent bouts of sewing. Sounds like you had a great summer...and I can sympathise with you being in the middle of renovations...it's emotionally and physically exhausting!! I'll be doing more painting the outside of the house this weekend - we have great weather forecast for today and tomorrow and then an arctic blast coming down on top of us from the north from Monday - I'll have to get the icelandic sweaters out of the bottom drawer:) Chat soon, Áinexxx

      Thanks so much Caroline, it really is lovely to hear that you were affected by the music. I find it such a plaintive tune, and am also always affected by it every time I play it. Sometimes its hard to focus on making the music I get so moved by it. Its amazing to think someone wrote it nearly 300 years ago and thousands have heard it and will continue to hear it and experience the emotion expressed by the person who first dreamt it up...

    Beautiful knitting and especially beautiful harp. I live in the US and in 1984 I purchased a vinyl album called Carolan's Cup by Joemy Wilson. His versions of these songs are played on a hammered dulcimer which also likely originated in the Middle East before 1000AD. the sound is very similar to the Irish Harp but it is a horizontal instrument. The strings are struck with mallets rather than being plucked. Such wonderful music. If I could play like you I think I probably would knit far less. Thank you and it is great to hear from you again. Hope to hear your lovely music, bits of Irish culture and see your lovely knits again soon.

    Lovely to see you again. I also live in Ireland (Cork), so a lot of the things you mentioned were familiar (I do work a couple of doors from Hedgehog Fibers HQ), and I was very happy to learn about Emblem Weavers - now the only problem is that I am dying to buy their fabric. I'd love to see Irish linen recover from their ruins, so there you go, that's the best excuse to spend some money. 🙂

    • @fraochknits

      A very good reason to buy some lovely linen. It is THE most beautiful fabric in the world.....can't wait to finish my second studio tunic in the Emblem Weaver's linen. Even though it was expensive, I'm able to use less of it (just over 1.5m as opposed to 2.5m of the linen ramie blend) because its such a large width (nearly 60inches I think).

      Thanks for your lovely words. I do feel very fortunate to have learned it. The harp was made by a man local to us whose son made harps for a living. My one was made as a practice instrument for him to learn how to make one and for me to practice on. It's now about 40 years old so has stood the test of time well and still sounds as good as it did then.....

    Just watching your vlog, first timer. Just a little thing i do when sewing over ‘bulky’ folds on seams i bang it down with a hammer, one or two taps is usually enough to get rid of the bulky bulge and makes it easier for the machine to sew over. Love the tunic, i will look for that pattern, thanks. Take care Susan in Oz.

      Hi Susan - thanks a million for the sewing tip! I had managed to get through the bulky seams by literally taking a run at them putting the pedal to the floor when I was approaching them lol!! A bit nervewracking... The hammer idea sounds great! All Sew Liberated patterns are really good - great classic shapes and brilliant instructions. Can't wait to try out the Hinterland Dress.

      @@fraochknitsStrange, I’m not able to comment other than replying to you. Anyway, glad to see you back. Such lovely knitted items and the harp at the end was a lovely surprise. Another recommendation for the WYS yarns would be another Thea Colman pattern called White Russian. I hear people make that several times. I’m finishing up another (maybe my 7th) Porty Pullover for a friend and as soon as that is done I’m starting the White Russian for myself in a lovely burgundy colored WYS Fleece yarn. And yay on sewing! When I first started I was very influenced by a pattern maker Sonya who is 100 Acts of Sewing on Instagram. She does very basic pieces but I’ve been making her dresses, shirts, skirts and pants for many years now. Most of my clothes are her patterns : ) Enjoy the sewing time…just wait until you get into piecing quilts! It would by nice to hear the history of Irish Linen which is some of the best and well known linen in the world. Cheers.

    Nice to see you back, and remember you have no obligation to post on a regular schedule, just as you are so inspired to do so. Enjoyed learning about the Ogham letters and the trees they connect to... we have hawthorne, oak, and apples growing on our place in Texas... and I find them to be particularly magical here as well. Happy summer knitting and walking to you, Aine!

    So delightful to catch up with you Aine! All of your projects are lovely. Every time I see your Soldatna I move that pattern up in my queue. Thank you for the alphabet content as well, it’s so fascinating! Keep well!

      Hi, lovely to hear from you again too! The soldotna really is one of the all time great patterns, it's a great fit on loads of different body shapes, it looks great in all the different colour combinations I've seen AND it's an entertaining knit with all the colourwork. It also helps to use up stash yarn... what's not to like:) Hope you have fun with it whenever you get round to it. Thanks again and chat soon.....

    Another really lovely podcast. All your knits are beautiful especially the green one you are wearing. I agree with you about badly made clothes that don’t fit most people. I am going to try to make my own to go with my knits. Worth waiting for your podcast full of great content. Thanks Aine 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Thanks Christine for your lovely comments. Great to hear that you're thinking of sewing some garments to go with your knitwear! I got my sewing machine out and dusted it down over the weekend and I've done some trial stitching. I've chosen a pattern and am ready to make a mock-up of it and I'll be near a fabric shop next weekend and hope to pick up some linen then. It will be great to experiment with making sewn clothes. Can't wait to see how it goes and hope to share some progress in my next podcast. In the meantime enjoy your knitting and sewing:)

    your green sweater so pretty....love the color and shape. I am so glad to hear about your gauge "indifferences" LOL....I have the same issue every time I make a sweater....not that I have made alot but practice makes perfect for me. I still wear them as you do.

    • @fraochknits
      @fraochknits 2 місяці тому

      Hi Mary, you're definitely not alone on the gauge issue:) It definitely is a case of practice makes perfect, we just have to keep learning from our mistakes and giving it another go! Thanks for watching the video and happy knitting!

    I also end up with a garment that is too big. My swatch is perfect till I knit my project. It can be so disappointing.

    • @fraochknits
      @fraochknits 2 місяці тому

      It's good to hear I'm not the only one! It's something that happens more when I'm knitting with thicker yarn - like worsted, aran or bulky weights. If the gauge is off even one stitch with these weights it can increase the size a lot. I now know I have to allow for this so hopefully I can avoid disappointment in the future. Thanks so much for watching the video:). Happy knitting!!

      Thanks Simone! And thanks also for the Kofi contribution it's much appreciated👍 so glad you enjoyed the footage. The first bit was very shaky - it was extremely windy and I was holding the phone with one hand😂. I decided to include it as it had the Ogham stone.......That walk in Kerry is do beautiful and the Aran Islands are also a stunning place to walk. Hope you're doing well and enjoying your knitting❤️

    Thank you for another beautiful podcast. I love all of your garments and the colors are amazing. To think that I was so close to where you live! Ireland is beautiful and stunning. The people are so kind and friendly. I think that my favorite places were the Blarney castle, which was a lot of fun and I was proud to make it to the top. And the Cliffs of Moher which were absolutely stunning. The Dingle Peninsula and Kerry Co was lovely. Unfortunately, when you go on an organized tour, you only get to stop at places for a limited amount of time. But to me, organized trips and tour groups can give you ideas about where to visit if you return in the future, which I hope to do. Our bus driver was very informative about so much of the history of Ireland. there is not one area I didn’t like. And even in the cities like Dublin and Galway, everything was so clean compared to the US.

      Hi Joyce, it sounds like you had a really amazing trip. So glad you enjoyed it all. And as you say lots of food for thought on places to visit in future. It's lovely to get off the beaten track- if you hire a car or a camper van you can find beautiful beaches on the coast and lovely towns with great places to eat and drink. Hope you get to come back soon..

    Áine, your podcast was a delight for my eyes and ears from the get-go to the end. That green jumper is simply beautiful. I've been in a bit of a knitting slump myself and your video is as close as I've come to wanting to pick up my needles for months. Your content is so interesting to me. Ireland seems truly magical. One day... Also - way to go with knowing when to take a break!

      Ann, thank you so much for your lovely comments as always.....I am delighted to think that I might have helped you out of your knitting slump. Don't rush things though...these slumps are important and necessary for us to regain our energy and inspiration which return in their own good time (just like my podcasting break). You will come back to the knitting with enthusiasm when you're ready. As they say here 'when God made time, he made plenty of it' -an expression I turn to more and more, and the wisdom of which is only beginning to filter through to me in recent years.......
