Gutz holding back and Brennan being so competitive feels SOO on brand for both of them. I can't wait for another all star where Gutz reveals his final form and ends in the double digits.
This is purely assumptions, but Gutz feels like he was a kid that got punished for being a know-it-all so he learned to cool it, even in situations where it is encouraged. Whereas Brennen feels like he was a kid that got punished for being a know-it-all and took it personally, becoming even more of a know-it-all out of spite.
To answer Erika's question, I heard some people argue Doctor Who's version of 'jump the shark' was kill the moon, in which the moon turned out to be an alien egg the whole time, that hatched at the end of the episode only to be immediately replaced by an identical moon/egg layed by the previous alien while leaving
While I like this 'jump the shark' contender, I feel like it is overshadowed somewhat by the fact that we learned 8 years earlier in "The Runaway Bride" that the Earth itself was formed around a spaceship from the alien species "Racnoss", which was hiding from other aliens. Another option is the 1979 episode in which it is revealed that life on Earth began due to a Jagaroth (another alien species) spaceship exploding while trying to take off from a pre-life Earth with damaged thrusters. Edit: Oh and I forgot the 1981 one where we find out that the universe has actually long since passed the point of heat death and should have collapsed. But a race of aliens have been keeping the universe alive by using maths to funnel off the excess entropy. As in they beam equations into space and this maintains the existence of the universe. Doctor Who is wild yo.
@Zaikaze The first two I can accept given that life in Doctor Who seams too be as common as planetary bodies and it would be weird to have all these aliens and not have them interferewith early humanity. The last one I could totally see as some grand sci-fi novel with a galactic civilization growing up in the pipeworks of an alien super machine designed to save the universe, like that just sounds cool. An alien took a shit as big as itself and fucked off is just weird lazy writing.
I disagree with that completely. I'm a huge Doctor Who fan and I'm 95% sure the show has jumped the shark MULTIPLE times! Even before the 2005 relaunch!
Kill the moon is a great episode. To me, It’s about Clara and 12’s conflict more than the actual moon thing. Chibnall making it so the time lords stole regeneration power from the doctor and therefore making the dr the most special thing in the universe might take the show out, though. But I think they can make a comeback. They always do.
Being an avatar fanatic I was so nervous about that question because it tiptoed right into the territory of one of the biggest arguments fans have about the lore, and Gutz gave what would have been my response basically verbatim (while Brennen and Erika look on in bewilderment.) My respect for him just went up tenfold, and that was before he mentioned the 90 chapter fanfic, which made me realize he's likely had this argument with people before and that's partly why he was so right. King shit honestly
I don't know how much of an argument it can really be. If they learned it from the animals/moon then there's no reason why someone like sokka couldn't learn bending. We can at least convince ourselves that the lion turtles' energy bending creates something genetic
From what I recall of Korra, the ancient people lived on the backs of the lion turtles as protection against the various spirits that inhabited the world. When groups came out to hunt for food, the lion turtles would temporarily bestow them with bending abilities so they can have protection in the wild, which then gets removed when they come back. Wan basically ran away and didn't return his bending abilities, and befriended the spirits, and used his bending to protect them against other humans, which earned the trust of the spirits. I don't remember if he bonds with the light spirit before or after he goes to collect all 4 elements, but more and more people start to follow his lead and leave the turtles to survive on their own with bending powers, and Wan stops a human vs spirit war. Then separates the two species into different realms.
it's been a while since i've watched a brennan episode and it really highlights the contrast between other guests good-naturedly accepting that they're not getting the point and brennan straight up ready to Fight trapp and truly i have missed this energy

Brennan is such a master of Um Actually. He always seems to find a legitimate way to correct the correction. He really goes above and beyond. What a legend! 🏆
Brennan is the master of finding a technicality outside of the correction they were looking for. Goots is the master of knowing exactly what they were looking for in excruciating detail. I still cannot decide which is more impressive.
I love how Mike is like ''Yeah, by the time this episode comes out it'll all be over, they'll say we're so dour!'' And we've been in this for almost 2 years and we all want to die
Even in an all star meeting it just feels like goots is like giving the others a chance to answer before he says what the answer is. I love him being on the show so much
Um actually, the last three properties were ordered incorrectly in the “Apocalypse When?” round. If we’re going by when the apocalypse occurred (which is what Trapp asked, and also Terminator’s accepted date for the question is 2003) rather than when the story takes place, it should be as follows: 4) Horizon: Zero Dawn (2063-2066) 5) The Last Man (the 2090s) 6) WALL-E (the 22nd Century)
THIS. And an aside, the robot dinosaurs didn't cause the apocalypse and in fact are part of the clean up system. The way the world ends in the Horizon universe is honestly so damn depressing.
He asked when do the stories take place, which is the answer they were looking for. He separately asked when is the end of the world, so both things are actually asked.
@@joshp8535 Yeah thats a problem, because they use BOTH forms to answer the question on the show. For Terminator, The Last of Us, and Snowpiercer...they use the dates the Apocalypse began in not when the story takes place. For The Last Man, Wall-E, and Horizon they use when the story takes place. The logical inconsistency is baffling.
I've never laughed so hard as I did at Trapp's perfectly timed "No" at 32:11 🤣 And in general, love how comfortable Trapp and Brennan are with each other, and how much shit they're consequently willing to give each other 😅
I am never so invested as when Brennan is on the show. I’m GETTING IN THE COMMENTS to say that I love Brennan so much and I’m so relieved he was able to tie for first.
Yeah... Gotta go with Brennan on that one, you can't call something an "unusual" power when it's common, in-universe. All superpowers are uncommon, from our perspective, so calling it "unusual" implies that it's unusual in the universe in which it exists.
but chibopathy isn't really common in the universe either, I think tony, his daughter and one other person has it in that universe. Though various other food based powers are common as dirt it would seem
no, unusual doesn't necessarily mean uncommon, strictly speaking. It also just means "strange," and there are plenty of things you could classify as both mundane or pedestrian, AND weird.
Oh! This is funny. When I watched Doctor Who ages ago my then-girlfriend at the time and I came up with our own Doctor Who Jump the Shark analogy. In one episode Clara defeated an evil SUN by presenting it with a leaf filled with memories and abstract significance to spacetime (it's important because it caused the event that introduced her parents to each other). So the leaf is really special and the sun feeds on memories or something, so they win. So "jumping the shark" for us became "here's a leaf".
I thought of the 2 parter episode where the doctor literally loses his memory (or takes it away himself) and becomes a genuine human haha as if doctor who goes so far and then comes back around to mundanity and somehow that becomes fucking epic hahaha
Um, actually, your Avatar question mentions two separate things (gaining the ability to bend and *learning* to bend), and there's only the smallest of retcons involved, if any. The lion turtles gave people the *ability* to bend, but the beasts/spirits still taught people *how* to bend properly. This is also shown in the Korra episode you mentioned, where (future) Avatar Wan learns the Dancing Dragon form from a dragon in a montage. The larger problem with the initial statement is that while the Water Tribes revere both the Moon and Ocean Spirits, it's only the Moon Spirit that gets credited with teaching bending (from the pushing and pulling of the tides).
Distinguishing between "learning to bend" and "gaining the ability to bend" is so important and everyone fails to make it and treats Korra as a retcon- Mike pointed it out, but almost everyone gets this wrong and treats it as a retcon, there are lots of problems with Origins, Hello Future Me elaborates on them in his *excellent* video, but calling the lion turtles a retcon is just ignorant and misinformed
@@dannybrase1253 I think it is possible that Earth Bending powers had been dormant in their lineage for a while until Oma and Shu rediscovered it through the lesson with the badger mole.
@@rigen97 Yeah, that could be. There's a number of ways you could reconcile it, but I don't think you need to. Real history is complicated and different perspectives sometimes appear contradictory. No reason fictional histories have to be perfect.
6:24 Um actually, all superpowers are unusual from our perspective. I mean if just a single real person could fly or lift a car over their head, we'd be like "Wow, that's so unusual." So Brenan was right. If lots of people can do it in the comic, then it's not "unusual." #getinthecomments
Um actually It's unusual, it Will be usual if all the superpowers is the same kind of super power, Cuz not all superpowered individual in Chew is chibopath, only 5 known individual is a chibopath.
While I get the situation with "Durin's Day" and the "keyhole" into the mountain, I think its important to remember that this was the secret back-door/builder's entrance into the whole mountain. If it wasn't this complicated, some one would use it to attack the Dwarves. Also, if there was a specific snail/bird combo that lived only in the Lonely Mountain, it could be used to mark as part of the ritual to know they're in the right spot.
I guess, I mean to say, this isn't that unusual for how paranoid and suspicious the Dwarves could become with what was their "crown jewel" of a fortress/keep/palace/thing.
I thought it was pretty well established in the Hobbit that the dwarves and men of the lonely mountain had strong relationships with the birds of that region. They could even speak each others' language - it was a thrush that told Bard the Bowman how to kill Smaug. As a kid I talked myself into accepting this weird detail of the map by thinking that maybe the thrush came back every Durin's Day in a small ceremony to mourn the friends he had lost there.
More like the kid who realizes the question is worded poorly and sounds like it's asking for one answer when technically it is asking for another. Then when they answer the question CORRECTLY, they still lose points because it's not what the questioner intended. okay that was me I was that kid. it happeneded several times and I'm still not over it!
I have never felt prouder of myself for being a Miyazaki fan than when I was able to get the shiny question before Guetz and Brennan- I’ve peaked in college and I’m okay with this
Totally. Even the first slide I saw all the white blocks and thought that has to be Totoro, but if I’d been playing the game I don’t know that I’d have been confident enough to say it. But I rarely get answers faster than any of them so it made me feel good haha
The chew question does seem to imply that it is a strange power in universe There are so many questions talking about superpowers that aren't weird, even though from our perspective, ALL superpowers are weird That is why we call them super powers Give Brennan the point
I always thought refs were just window dressing in all-star games, but good on Trapp for proving that wrong and just absolutely hosing Brennan every chance he could.
Um, Actually in the last shiny question you asked both "... in chronological order from when these 'stories occur', so when is 'the end of the world' according to these stories." But that's two different times, for instance Horizon Zero Dawn's world ended in the 2064, 1000 years before it's actual story occurs. P.S. I love Brennan smearing his boogers on Mike at 33:13
@@jasonschwartz7781 @Swiched Project Zero Dawn started in 2064, but I agree that "the apocalypse" in the story happens in 2066 (maybe late 2065 after the collapse of the atmosphere if you want to get reaaaallly pedantic), when the last macrobiotic land creatures die off either from starvation or the Faro Plague.

Um, Actually, Brennen wins in my heart. and because he was technically correct about a lot of things, which (as Erica said) is the best kind of correct.
This is actually canon: Brennan has inside their living quarters just a red telephone with direct line to Sam and when they need Brennan, it rings like the super hero that Brennan is. Flippin philosophy major what a sham
Side note after tracing lore, Brennan does indeed identify as he him or did im sum podcast i listened too. I shall become the Brennan database. Lemme mine that sweet sauce daddy.

I'm pretty sure that "when the thrush knocks" is something like when the rooster crows but at a different time of day. Even my cat has an astonishing ability to start begging for food at the exact same time every night regardless of other context.
Um Actually, there is nothing wrong with the Avatar question. It stated that ‘the ability to bend was gifted to the mortals by great beasts’ the Lion Turtles. It then says they learned from dragons etc, which is true. They were given the power from Lion Turtles but it was the Dragons, Badgermoles etc that taught them how to use bending
Erica seemed to be quite outclassed, but dare I say Guts also seemed to be like an anime character, “using only 30% of my power”. I don’t think I would ever see someone be so clearly on Brennans level, or even better. Wow. What an episode.
Interestingly, the CCA banned werewolves, but not weredinosaurs That one pterodactyl spiderman villain that just wanted to turn people into dinosaurs? Introduced under the CCA
4:17 the answer was "kill all of the TimeLords (that they just brought back) for the like third time, and then reveal that the entire canon as we know it, all of The Doctor's history & memories, and the known history of the Timelords was a lie, and that The Doctor was a magic space child who the Timelords stole all of their powers from in order to build their empire." Also, this happened around the episodes where they literally transcended space & time to go to a space station "outside of reality"
A very belated Um, Actually... the episode "A Christmas Carol" is not set on a spaceship. Although the beginning involves Amy and Rory on a space cruise, the majority of the story takes place in a small steampunk-ish town on a planet where fish live in the mist.
Thrushes frequently use the same rock to break snail shells over the course of their lives, referred to as their "snail anvil". The thrush (as explained by Thorin) could have been trained to use that rock to signify the keyhole for whoever came back to the Lonely Mountain.
@@DanKaschel Really, you wouldn't even need to train it; just make sure that's the only good snail breaking rock around for a bit. Realistically, 'when the thrush knocks' is probably more in the realm of "When the cock crows" anyways.
Erika's excitement for spike Spiegel made me realize she could be a bad ass Faye Valentine (the live action actor did well - Erika just would've brought so much excitement to the role :p).
Um, actually, Trapp said that the actual episode A Christmas Carol takes place on a spaceship but it takes place on a planet. Amy and Rory are on a spaceship, but Doctor is in a place called Sardicktown trying to get Michael Gambon (aka Albus Dumbledore) to be less of an asshole
Brennan is correct on the Hobbit question. The light only reveals the keyhole, not the entire door. You may say that knowing where the keyhole is reveals the door's location. But it still does not show the entire outline of the whole door, therefore only revealing the keyhole, not the door. Many other dwarf doors are revealed entirely when the right circumstances occur, like the doors of Moria, which shows the whole outline of the door.
Um Actually, Captain Newfoundland (aka Captain Atlantis) is an ancient extraterrestrial being and it was he who selected and tutored Daniel Eaton to become Captain Canada. He was buddies with Leif Eiriksson back in the day, and Newfoundland is the last remaining un-submerged tip of Atlantis in this canon - it's a whole thing. Also, it's (for no discernible reason) pronounced NEW-fin-LAND. [Source: I am both Newfoundlander and nerd] Not for nothing, the art for this comic run (Daniel Bulanadi) is absolutely bonkers cool. Very much worth a google and/or bing search.
Nice timing on the Captain America question where Brennan waves his hand while answering and Trapp touches the side of his own mouth just in time with that so it looks like Brennan reached into Trapp's square.
Um, actually, you made a SMALL mistake with the "apocalypse when?" question. You said Wall-E's apocalypse happened in the 29th century, but although that was when the movie took place, the apocalyptic event actually took place 700 years prior, in the late 21st or early 22nd century, where Wall-E and other robots like him were left behind to try and clean up all the trash. I don't know the EXACT year but there's enough wiggle room that it MIGHT affect whether it's 4th or 5th in line.
Captain Canuck comics were actually massively ahead of other publishers at the time in terms of the innovative ways they were printing colour and look spectacular compared to other contemporary comics. Plus they are still great reads.
So here's a fun little fact about the CCA and Werewolves. There was a Tales from the Crypt (I think, not sure about what publication it was) where the narrator said that he had heard these stories from a "Wandering Wolfman," which was a reference to Author Marv Wolfman. The CCA told them that they had to take that out of the comics because of their Werewolf ban, but the publisher explained that it was a reference to the Author's name, so the CCA said that they would allow it on the condition that it was made explicitly clear that the author was named "Wolfman." At the time, it was not common practice for Authors to receive credit for the comics that they worked on, so this ended up being the thing that got the ball rolling in a big way for authors to receive credit for their work.
Um actually the joke about him being the "number Wan" is actually very on point, since I believe Wan means something like "infinite" and "one" at the same time, I remember when I saw the episode it was stated that the name had that sort of implication.
um actually there is nothing technically wrong with the avatar question. No statement was made that they were given bending from the animals mentioned it only says learned and it would be hard to argue that a lion turtle is not a great beast.

close, sure, but Brennan's point was a pedantic deconstruction of the wording of the question, and he didn't actually add any information to Erika's guess, which was itself not super robust and Trapp was asking for a bit more
Regarding the Thrush comment and the Secret Door on Durin's Day, I always thought of it one of two ways. 1. Thrushes can be migratory, so the idea that the thrush is knocking at this particular part of the year signifies that they are present in the area, and isnt necessarily a specific Thrush but just a general acknowledgement of their presence given the season. (Depending on how and when the birds migrate, of course.) 2. It could be possible that the birds do have lore that they hand down through the generations, looking for Durin's folk to return to the mountain and help show them the way to the entrance. I do think the second option is a bit more far-fetched (lol pokemon jokes), but we've seen multiple characters be able to comunicate and strike deals with wildlife AND birds, so it isn't outrageous to think that Durin's people had an agreement with the Thrushes surrounding Erebor. BOOM NAILED IT!
They need have to have two categories of points. One for what they were looking for in the question and one for when the guest gets them on something like switching from drive to reverse is technically switching gears in an automatic car. It really hurts the fun pretentious nature of the show that they don’t and they need to enforce the um actually rule consistently.
I think that's easier said than done. English is not a particularly precise language (without being excessively verbose), so accepting ANY true correction would hurt the game by forcing the questions to over-specify. Also, a lot of the conversations would devolve into semantics (not that they don't already). For example, shifting into "drive" is not shifting into a gear. It's shifting into a "mode" which prescribes a subset of gear. So in an automatic vehicle, you don't shift gears, you shift modes and the car selects the gear based on that made and other factors.
The secret door in the lonely mountain is like that one side door at work that everyone agrees is more convenient to use, but is always locked except for one day a year
Um actually the bending forces can be also reawakened by opening spirit portal on human world. Due to imbalance made by fire nation air nomads wiping, after Korra opened portal when fighting Unalaq, many nonbenders obtained airbending powers WITHOUT lion turtles involvement. So yeah in that universe not only lionturtles give bending powers but also some spirit worldish shenanigans.
Re: Matt Damon's character from The Martian being a Martian: Um, actually, he's about as much a Martian as Christopher Columbus or Lief Ericson are Native Americans. He was an explorer/scientist *on* Mars. The human character from The Expanse was *born* on Mars, and thus would very much be a Martian. Since there is no government to naturalize him and he has no birthright 'citizenship' there, Mark Watney is a Terran and an American on Mars, not a Martian.

Although the events of the horizon games take place starting around 3020, the FARO swarm had eliminated all life on the surface of earth by somewhere between 2066 and 2068, so the apocalypse should have been placed around there, unless referring to nemesis’s signal causing GAIA’s subordinate functions to become self aware, causing much further destruction of the new civilization, which takes place specifically on august 26th, 3020
um actually, at 10:40 someone said there were 4 turtles. however it is stated in the lore that there was originally around two dozen but most were hunted. also fun little tidbit I am pretty sure each turtle has a different element to give meaning rather then the 5 we have seen technically there could be like 19 other unique bending abilities that have not been shown
@@DanKaschel I think they say that he isn't trying to win because it always feels like he's letting everyone else answer before he does. So, he's just allowing everyone to have a chance to be correct before he can even answer, which is some form of not trying to win, just participating in trivia.

The apocalypse question was inconsistently worded. It’s true that Horizon Zero Dawn’s story takes place in the 31st century, but the apocalypse actually took place prior to Wall-E’s setting and apocalypse. When Trap asked the question, he asked for them to be in order according to when the story was set, and when the apocalypse took place as if they were the same thing.

I don't remember if he bonds with the light spirit before or after he goes to collect all 4 elements, but more and more people start to follow his lead and leave the turtles to survive on their own with bending powers, and Wan stops a human vs spirit war. Then separates the two species into different realms.
The problem is that Legend of Korra redconned established lore from The last Airbender.

Um actually, the last three properties were ordered incorrectly in the “Apocalypse When?” round. If we’re going by when the apocalypse occurred (which is what Trapp asked, and also Terminator’s accepted date for the question is 2003) rather than when the story takes place, it should be as follows:
4) Horizon: Zero Dawn (2063-2066)
5) The Last Man (the 2090s)
6) WALL-E (the 22nd Century)
I knew Wall-E was wrong immediately because the movie takes place 700 years after humans left Earth

@@tadirele8242 ok, then _Trapp_ was wrong when he confirmed that it _is_ common.
@@tadirele8242 also, there's at least 4 cibopaths in Chew, and that's, like, a third of the main cast. It's clearly not _that_ rare.

Yes, it’s the children who are wrong ;)
I thought it was pretty well established in the Hobbit that the dwarves and men of the lonely mountain had strong relationships with the birds of that region. They could even speak each others' language - it was a thrush that told Bard the Bowman how to kill Smaug. As a kid I talked myself into accepting this weird detail of the map by thinking that maybe the thrush came back every Durin's Day in a small ceremony to mourn the friends he had lost there.

Also, this happened around the episodes where they literally transcended space & time to go to a space station "outside of reality"
I'm perpetuity? Does the thrush choose a chick and teach it to do the same?
@@DanKaschel Really, you wouldn't even need to train it; just make sure that's the only good snail breaking rock around for a bit. Realistically, 'when the thrush knocks' is probably more in the realm of "When the cock crows" anyways.
Thrushes only live for like 10-12 years and the map was created at least 150 years before the events of the book, so it still doesn't work.
Erika's excitement for spike Spiegel made me realize she could be a bad ass Faye Valentine (the live action actor did well - Erika just would've brought so much excitement to the role :p).
Shes not an excited character. Her high energy was the reason faye was the worst part of the show
Um, actually, Trapp said that the actual episode A Christmas Carol takes place on a spaceship but it takes place on a planet. Amy and Rory are on a spaceship, but Doctor is in a place called Sardicktown trying to get Michael Gambon (aka Albus Dumbledore) to be less of an asshole
and also he's got the Mr. Freeze situation going on, with a cryogenically frozen girlfriend or whatever
YES THANK YOU
Brennan is correct on the Hobbit question.
There's something so oddly satisfying about seeing Brennan getting humbled while he continues to be hilarious
He was humbled, but still tied for first. That's how powerful he is.
Not for nothing, the art for this comic run (Daniel Bulanadi) is absolutely bonkers cool.
The same with Horizon: Zero Dawn, which had the apocalypse in 2066.
He asked it both ways during the question, which does gum that up a bit. He asked 'when does it occur' and 'when is the end of the world'.

Unintentional silver linings FTW
@@sabbathjackal silver and werewolves go so well together :)

(Depending on how and when the birds migrate, of course.)

Um actually the bending forces can be also reawakened by opening spirit portal on human world. Due to imbalance made by fire nation air nomads wiping, after Korra opened portal when fighting Unalaq, many nonbenders obtained airbending powers WITHOUT lion turtles involvement.

Gutz still humble as ever not even trying to win lol
Only partially using his power as usual
Not sure why everyone says this. Because he's not overtly aggressive he isn't trying to win?
@@DanKaschel I think they say that he isn't trying to win because it always feels like he's letting everyone else answer before he does. So, he's just allowing everyone to have a chance to be correct before he can even answer, which is some form of not trying to win, just participating in trivia.
This is the perfect cast for Um, Actually.
Funny story: when I was in high school, a friend of mine was drawing a layout of the lunch room (because it was high school and why not) and he drew an arrow to where I always sat and labeled it with my name. It was the ONLY thing labeled on the map.
That’s kinda sweet tbh. Also kinda makes you look like an NPC with a quest to offer for anyone reading the map
Any episode with Gutz or Brennan is bound to be a great one, but one with both of them? You know this is going to be good.
That tripped me as well.
Yeah because that would mean Terminator does not take place in 2003.
You made the eye checker roll their eyes, that means you've got something
I recently started rewatching the Fear the Walking Dead series again and this piece of information completely flew past my head the first time.
The bite from a walker simply kills you, so imagine it being like a bite from a Komodo Dragon really.
This is the best group of contestants. Change my mind
I've watched like 5 of these, and every one of them that Brennan has been on has been amazing.
I feel like Brennan needs to host the next Red Nose Day event with Colbert...this last one was amazing but the amount of Rings lore that could be exchanged makes me too happy.
