  • Prof. Tim Noakes is a co-founder and executive director of the Sports Science Institute of SA. He is an author, respected academic and A1 rated scientist and has long been acknowledged as an expert in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise. Tim is a Director of UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine (ESSM). In this talk from TEDxCapeTownED, he lays out the importance of belief in exceptional achievement, and points to the role of the coach in fostering that belief. He leaves a challenge with educators to see their role as creating belief in their students.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Selection bias: only looking at winners (and only some of those), and not looking at those who failed to see what they believed. Belief IS important, but is only part of it. Closer to the mark are (1) Self-efficacy, a confidence grounded in action, in proving your ability to yourself, and (2) "Growth mindset", the understanding that you can get better and that effort is what counts.

I started to cry at the end. It's true. Even when you don't believe, if someone else helps you believe in yourself, you can do anything.
    Very inspirational.

Great talk!!! Perhaps the best part was the call to live a life which inspires others. Even if you can't attain the extraordinary, challenge others to think they can -- and that's what true teachers do. Thanks Prof. Noakes for challenging me.

Belief is everything. If you dint achieve something. You dint believe in it enough. First step is you need a goal which you really want bad. Your desire to have, reach must be tremendous. Next step is you gotta believe it's possible. And you can only believe it's possible if you put in effort very second every minute towards that dream. Effort will give you belief that it's possible. Or if your goal has already been achieved by someone. All you got to do is follow the steps.

I wasn't in sport, but rather band. I really agreed how he said that life is a chain that we are part of. That's how I saw the world of band at my school.

This is great. I like it. But is the great Prof Noakes saying life is like a competitive sport? Well may be that helps but is this not too limiting a definition of success?
The great Sadgurhu says "success is living your life to its full potential" which for me is a much richer understanding that does not depend on the judgement of others how successful you are and has the additional advantage of seeing failure as part of the journey to excellence. Competitive sport analogies of success are just too limiting for me - seeing everyone else as a competitor to be beaten, that kind of mindset seems depressing.

If you think something is possible then your mind will work to make it reality. If you don't believe you will stop there.
Mind-self barriers (just made that term up) Bam!

Competition never ends. There is a chance for redemption should you fall the first time. You have only lost if you quit. You have only failed if you give up. Luckily you get more then one chance to becoming extraordinary
