Jeff Porcaro Tribute - Darran Muller using Yamaha Stage Custom Birch drums

- Lately I've been thinking about some of the many drummers who are favourites of mine and how they have had a major influence on me and my playing. Since this year marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of Jeff Porcaro, I thought I would record a video of some of my favourite Toto tracks. These songs are timeless hits and showcase Procaro's amazing groove and musicality. My objective is to not copy Jeff's playing but to pay tribute to an amazing drummer by playing my own version of some of the songs that were made famous by his superb groove and touch.
A few weeks ago I was back in the studio at JMC Academy in Brisbane recording my version of these tracks with my Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 6 piece kit and some of my favourite Paiste cymbals.

Toms are fitted with Remo clear Emperors on the top and Remo clear Ambassadors on the bottom.
Kick drum has Remo clear power stoke 3.
The Snare drum is fitted with a Remo coated Ambassador on the batter and an Ambassador snare side head on the bottom.

Studio
I was fortunate enough to use JMC Academy Brisbane's recording studio for this video. They have just installed a new SSL Duality console and it sounds like magic. The session was engineered by Daniel Spirovski and additional video footage was taken by JMC student Zach Blackaby.
Not a lot of drummers can get the Rosanna half time shuffle as smooth. It was perfect.

Luvo Mdleleni it’s a yamah kit. They don’t play around. I’ve been comparing and seems like while others companies cheap out on wood and hardware yamaha builds to make them last
I got stage customs for my high school graduation... almost 20 years later, still get compliments on them all the time.

Agreed on Yamaha drums in general. I owned Ludwig Classics new and vintage for years until I realized paying for a name/legacy with over inflated pricing. In fact for recording like this or home practice the Yamaha Stage Customs sound better,more controlled without all the sustain and wow.

Excellent playing. Love the cymbals! The 19 sig sounds amazing, and records so well. I do like the vintage 602's, as they explode nicely. Hell can't go wrong with that set up!
That is some serious skills you put on display there! Very nicely done. I found this video while I was researching the potential purchase of a set of these Yamaha Stage Custom Birch drums. And man oh man, this video here only further reinforces my opinion that this is the best sounding kit on the market in this price range. Fantastic sound and tone! These rival the quality of drums that cost 2x or 3x more. And now that I watched this, I just might have to purchase those cymbals and hi-hats too. They likewise sound very rich and nice.
I'm late to the party....but, you absolutely crushed this. Very well done (and recorded). Outstanding. As far as that kit goes....it's absolutely incredible to that a kit could sound THAT good at that price.

Absolutely fantastic performance. Every piece of equipment sounds killer and perfectly compliments each other. There is simply no better entry level drumkit that even comes close to the Stage Custom! Oh, and that Copper snare sounds INCREDIBLE!

Jeff is a big inspiration for my playing and Toto remains my favorite band. Nice work, great feels for all the tunes. Nice transition from Georgy Porgy to Africa. Drums sound great as well, I play white Stage Customs as well.

You guys did such a greats job. This is how they should review dry sets. I’ve been hoping for a quality video on this kit. I’m convinced now. Would your sound engineer give you the eq frequency’s and settings for your drumming?

I have a beech custom absolute set from the late 90's and I am still In love with them just as much now as the day I bought them. Great mashup and amazing drum tone!!! Well done.
Nice!! I have a Yamaha absolute maple from the late 90s and it’s still great looks and sound to this day. Always wanted to try that beech kit.

@@darranmuller They are also higher quality. Both PDP and Sonor models coming from Asia have a high incident of bad shells. (bearing edges badly cut). Yamaha (and I've seen them since they adopted the node mounting late 70's) have NEVER had quality issues. I've also compared these to Pearl vision VBX, which sound lifeless and thin by compare.
