That is easily the most clickbaity thumbnail I have ever used for this channel, but the thesis of this video is, "Simpsons Comics are awesome and weird," so I may as well lean into it. That Patty and Selma story is so dang weird, I had to discuss it for this video. 😉
(Also I updated my editing software recently and the HD codecs were being ridiculously glitchy, so this video ended up in 720p. I don't think it matters much because a higher video quality doesn't really benefit these scans of comics and episode screenshots. I just got tired of fighting with the software (delayed me 2 days) and this will have to do. There are still a couple super quick glitches that made it into this final product. Hopefully I will get this straightened out for the next one.)

I grew up with Simpsons comics! I didn’t have as many as I did Futurama or Sonic comics (got the Sonic ones just because I thought they were rad and the Futurama because that was literally all the new Futurama you could get at one point lol) but I still had a decent amount. I vividly remember issue 150 because it had a poster inside that I ripped out and kept on my wall for years. The last little bit I had, I ended up mailing off to some friends when I moved, but this video was a really cool nostalgic watch. The Simpsons/Futurama Crossover Crisis was genuinely one of my favorite books as a kid and I'd love a full video on it at some point. It was actually my first exposure to Futurama and I feel like it did a great job balancing the two series' styles and making the story engaging even if you weren't familiar with one of the shows. Others have already applauded it, but getting Jayden Libran to voice some excerpts was an inspired decision. There are a couple places where you can see the cracks, such as his Smithers for the beginning of the Shaolin Panda issue, but it's barely noticeable. Not only that, but he does a better Carl than the guy they hired to replace Hank Azaria. Makes you wish they hired him instead of Alex Désert, but then he'd be too expensive to hire for this video, so it all works out.

In the UK these comics had a different numbering with some stories being split over multiple issues. Another difference is that the left side of the cover usually contained a small section previewing what was in the comic. The actual size of the issues were also bigger, being magazine sized. According to the Simpsons wiki the UK run ended before the US run did (the final issue being the equivalent of the US #231).
The UK got the compilations too but I think they're identical to the US ones.
Edit: Doing a little bit more research on the Simpsons wiki I found out there's a second (still ongoing) UK run that published the remaining US issues and is now just republishing random stories.

That was also absolutely the case here in Germany, as the german translation of the tv episodes was atrocious (tons of translations mistakes) with horrible, ill-fitting voice actors (they weren't casted to suit the role, they were casted based on their name value and celebrity status), while the comics were really good translations, made by somebody who know english and did understand video game and movie references and realized the audience isn't 50 year old people.

Getting Jayden to voice some parts of these comics is such a good idea! He's so good! Big fan of his voicework. Kinda wanna see more of him dubbing the comics!
I've seen some of the comics around, but I feel collecting all the small little comic books would take a bit... I do wanna try to get the compilations though. Western Europe has a thriving comics scene but they're very distinct from American comics, so they're not as common here. I don't think they've been translated here either. Heh, if it wasn't for the fact they stopped making them, I would've loved to appeal to Bongo comics to do artwork on some myself. Comics aren't my expertise, I'm a game graphics artist... but I can learn!
I especially enjoy that they're more flexible with art style compared to the show, and the fact they bring in more one-off characters. Wasn't there a cover that parodied Donkey Kong? I collect anything related to Donkey Kong so I might need to get that one...
Always love your videos (and the choice in background music!) and keep up the good work!

In Spain, they were not sold individually, they just packed them in huge hardback tomes called SUPER Simpsons. It was handed by a different spanish publisher (Ediciones B), the same one that carries our iconic spanish comics (Mortadelo & Filemon, Zipi & Zape, etc..), that when collected into tomes they also had the SUPER/SUPER HUMOR brand (For example, SUPER Mortadelo, for Mortadelo & Filemon comics, although sometimes it was just called SUPER HUMOR). This had a TON of stories inside it, as they were around 200 pages each, but thankfuly, they were always in the right published order, and best of all they always contained the bongo editorials, just translated into spanish, they also keep intact the original covers that were used for each story, with even the bongo comics logo printing (Only changing the title or spalsh text into spanish, if they had one). I had from when i was young, the first and second volumes, so a ton of stuff you have showed here feel super nostalgic to me. From what im seeing, some of this tomes are still on print here, with some being their 10 or 11 edition being reprinted. And instead of being in the young readers section in our comic book stores, you will usually finde them in the comedic sections.
UA-cam doesnt like putting links in the comments, so if you want to search about them, if you just write Super Humor Simpsons in google you will be able to see them, and if you scroll a little lower, you will also see covers of the SUPER editions of other spanish comics.

My most vivid memories of these comics are the returning minor characters. One story needs an estate-agent, and it turns out to be Princess Shaboom. Still dressed as an exotic dancer (PG rated version) My theory is that they wrote and illustrated these comics by moving around the action-figures and making them talk, so they could only draw the outfit she wore in the show. Yes, there is a Princess Shaboom action-figure.

The voice work was honestly great.
Not many people talk about Simpsons Comics and even fewer about Futurama Comics but I really liked them as a kid. I even had a subscription for both for a while but usually bought them from the magazine racks at the grocery store.
I guess one of my favourite stories, wich I appreaciate the humour of even more now that I've been collection US superhero comics, was featured simultaniously in th The Simpsons and Bart Simpson titles. I've forgot the exact numbers tho and am honestly too lazy to cram through my pile of issues right now.
It's a parody of superhero event comics and their tendency to force the reader to buy other titles in order to get the full story aswell as making fun of the confusing nature of shared universes and continuity. In the story a Vandall Savage type villain becomes aware he's in a comic book and manages to abduct several comic writers in order to mess up the Radioactive Man comics. In order to counter that the resident Dr. Strange parody Plasmo grants the citizens of Springfield super powers (a call back to an even earlier story, issues #36 and #37 I think, when Kang and Kodos did the same) and all hell breaks loose especially when the Springfieldians beat up the writers because they made their favourite superheroes all angsty and gritty.
Treehouse of Horror's was also one of my favourites, mostly because of the fact that those stories had so many varied art style and the editorial section had great trivia of the references and parodies used in the story (not sure if the US versions had that but the German ones did).

So, a random trivia parts to add.
These comics were incredibly popular in Europe (not like Disney comics, but still). Some, even came with toys, like inflatable spider pig. And german editions even take their time to ad special pages, where they breakdown every visual and wordplay easter eggs.
However, I’m from Russia, and we also had a very interesting versions of these comics. There’s one issue (can’t say number for sure, since some issues never came here and numeration did suffer) which was singing episode (mostly parodies of famous songs)! And russian translators, being absolute mad lads, adapted every song into different famous compositions, close to our ear!)
I collected most of the issues that I can buy and, to this day, genuinely fond of these little family stories and adventures. Also, glad to know I’m not the only one, who enjoyed issue 240!)
Thank you for this video and sorry for broken english

The funny thing about Simpsons Comics is that there’s some super noticeable eras to it. Early Simpsons comics go extremely wacky and fantastical, then there was a big era where cutaway jokes between panels were extremely common, and so on.
Big comics fan, so I’m happy to see you touch on Simpsons Comics here.

I loved the Simsons comics as a kid. They were kinda big in Germany as they had a similar humor as the Mickey Mouse Magazine(which is an absolute cultural phenomena in Germany)but were aimed at a slightly older audience, so when you grew out of Disney Comics you mostly switched to the Simpson ones.

Absolutely loved this video! I grew up reading Simpsons Comics; they were the first comics I ever read, and I'd buy them religiously every single month as a kid. I've always wished people talked about them more, so this was really nice to see. It was simultaneously a great trip down memory lane - there was plenty of stuff in this video I recognised - while also exposing me to the existance of issues that I missed as a kid or that were published after I stopped collecting. You've definitley got me interested in revisiting the comics and catching up, especially since nowadays I'm a comic collector and not just a Simpsons fan, so it'd be interesting coming at them with that more informed perspective and seeing if I recognise any of the artists or writers from other comics. I'd love to see you do more Simpsons Comics videos in the future!
Also, it was really neat hearing about your experiences with comic book stores - when I first started going to them as a teenager (when I was a kid Simpsons Comics were sold in a magazine format in newsagents over here in Ireland so that's were I bought them) I found them super intimidating, but once you get the hang of the store layout and stuff, there is nothing more satisfying than looking through boxes of old comics and finding some hidden gems. Next time I'm in my local comic book store I'll have to go and see if in can find the Simpsons Comics.

I remember reading the Radioactive Man Official Movie adaptation and being in absolute AWE with how well written it was. Every scene you see them shooting in the episode ends up making it into the plot in a way that makes narrative sense, even containing direct quotes like "Thanks for the help, mysterious stranger! Say, I think those X-rays gave me super-powers!" and "I can't believe Silly Sailor beat us both up and imprisoned us in his floating Aquaworld" and the overall story feels exactly like the kind of high stakes tale you would get in a movie adaptation of a comic book.
Highly recommended. (It's included in Colossal Compendium Vol 1)

That was such a treat as well! I didn't realise they had done a full adaptation of that episode's "movie", and it was so cool how they worked it all into a coherent story. I remember noticing how the version of the Fallout Boy origin you see in the episode wasn't the same as in the other Radioactive Man comics and being annoyed. Only recently did I realise that actually works in-universe, as superhero origins can and often do differ in superhero adaptations, including this one. I also love how the issue itself is modelled on what comics adaptations of films looked like back then: The style and layout of the cover is a direct homage to the 1st issue of the 1989 Batman comic adaptation, which fits given the episode was itself modelled on the production of those Batman movies.

I'm so glad you're covering the comics' run! It's a weird pocket of Simpsons history that much of the fanbase seems content to gloss right over; I'd love to see some of these stories analyzed by superfans with the same vigor as the episodes, though I realize most of them are a lot less complex.
I've got an entire stack of them in a shoebox, from collections to individual issues that amassed itself from when I was a kid. Something I noticed was that earlier issues are really wordy, probably attempting to emulate the highly-semantic nature of the show itself. Later issues cut back on the sometimes-overwhelming amount of dialogue, and let the art do more of the talking.
If you've come across John Delaney, he's my absolute favorite art contributor on Bongo staff. His heavy use of shadows and unique lighting composition makes his issues a joy to read for me!!

Gotta love all different styles as well, both in regular series and THOH. For favorite issues, I have fondness for "Winter Wingdig" seasonal almanac. "Summer Shindig" has great stories as well, but in WW it's just more obviously themed around certain setting, and seeing all winter landscapes and plots around it is heartening to me (Christmas setting as well). Individual "One-Shot Wonders" are interesting too (hit-or-miss in general), my favorite being Ralph Wiggum one (surprisingly adorable, story about Ralph wandering around town and inadvertently brightening everyone's day, even saving man from suicide) and three-issue Bartman set in *alternate future of - onviously also alternate - Bartman universe*, really recommend that one.
