"Lemonade?" "Please" "I made it just for you" "You are my best friend" "Mmm this really hits the spot" "Doesn't it so?" "You make really good lemonade Scratchy" "Thank you Itchy"
So, let me see if I've got this right. The three college nerds are such hardcore fans of Itchy and Scratchy that they sit in the front row of a cast meet-and-greet, and ask an astoundingly obscure question about the sound of xylophone, yet when they briefly moved into the Simpsons' house, they unplugged the tv during the climax of the ONE TIME when Scratchy kills Itchy, not caring at all that they missed something that will never be aired again. Are we to believe that these people just suddenly became fans of something they previously didn't care for, or that the writers somehow hadn't developed their entire personalities in their debut episode? I hope someone got fired over that one.
I'm absolutely certain that the writers brought back and repurposed the nerds in that scene about mistakes deliberately for trolling purposes; note that Homer doesn't seem to recognise them
Aquasharkyboy Thats a good idea, but it would also be funny if it was unintentional that he didn’t recognize them, like the writers put them in and didn’t even think “oh let’s pretend homer doesn’t recognize them, that’d be ironic.” An actual oversight made a bit about oversights? It can be cool when the world ends up funnier than what we intend
yeah well that's the era they stopped caring about continuation issues basically, the writers themselves were not fans of the simpsons, which in the end killed it. It just shows, you must be the biggest fan of your work, or it won't work
"In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is a magic xylophone, or something? Ha ha, boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder."
Ok, it's an easy one to explain. If you tap some precussion instruments in slightly different ways, you can get different sounds. On Scratchy's rib, all he would have to do is strike the rib slightly lower down away from the sternum, to get a lower note. This is not quite obvious because of the camera angle. I hope this helps.
I'll feld that one. Let me ask *you* a question. Why would a grown man whose shirt says "Genius at Work" spend all of his time watching a children's cartoon show?
The best Itchy and Scratchy episode is the one where Itchy replaces Scratchy's bride with one made of explosives, but they still get married, have kids and grow old together, the bomb-bride blows up, killing Scratchy and then Itchy comes in to laugh, but then dies of old age himself. It's just such a perfect parody of the usual cartoon trope and still ends up being really funny.
I was surprised Itchy & Scratchy ended up being one of my larger Simpsons Histories projects, considering they are mostly cartoon shorts. I underestimated how many spotlight episodes they got, how many different ways they were used on the show, and all the Roger Meyers stuff that needed to be touched upon. The first draft of this was 26 minutes long. Sheesh. All for characters whose personalities barely changed in 30+ seasons.
I always liked the death where scratchy and his son got run over by itchy and his son in the harvester because of Krustys reaction since it's from the episode about his dad. "Didnt scratchy jr look like he was having fun with his dad before they got run over. Wasnt that a beautiful cartoon?" As for the next Simpsons History's. I'll give my vote to Doctor Hibbert
My favorite I&S is so silly and dumb you’d never believe it. Scratchy walks past a theater showing _Cats_ and gets very excited. He walks into the theater, is shown to his seat by usher Itchy, watches the play for a minute, declares “This is so boring!” and shoots himself. Itchy does nothing violent. He doesn’t even perform a role on stage. He just encourages Scratchy to watch the play and counts on its badness to do the rest.

Glad you touched on something I was never clear about, namely, what is the relationship between Itchy & Scratchy and Krusty the Klown? Given that I&S has at least one theme park and a blockbuster movie, it never made sense to me that it was produced for a local TV show. Plus, it had been in production longer than Krusty had been alived. I thought the most sensible arrangement was that it was a syndicated show that was played on lots of local shows all over the country, but they seem to have gone another way with it. And I guess the VA dying is a good reason to do so.
Y'know diving into Comic Book Guy could be incredibly interesting, and compliment your editing style fantastically (fr your editing style makes these videos so relaxing to watch)
The lampooning of the various ages of animation through Itchy and Scratchy never fail to amuse for me. Also, no joke, I was going to suggest Rainier Wolfcastle for a Simpsons Histories episode so that comment at the end made me laugh.
Koyaanis-Scratchy has got to be one of the most esoteric references the Simpsons has ever made, and one of its most bizarrely detailed (there's full-on shot-for-shot moments taken from the source, Koyaanisqatsi, an experimental late 1980s films exploring man's relationship with nature.)
I just discovered this series and I think it's amazing. I'd love to see episodes focussed on Lenny and Carl, Luigi, Super Intendant Chalmers, Selma or Patty or Sea Captain Mcalester.
You’re seriously one of my favourite UA-cam channels Love your writing and essay technique and I admire your love and passion for one of the greatwst TV shows of all time
I love itchy and Scratchy! Fantastic montage! Truly wonderful characters for sure! I’m definitely a big fan of the outer space and movie opener shorts and thanks for also giving proper respect to Disgruntled goat!
I feel like a histories on Patty and Selma could be really interesting. With them having such separate arcs but nonetheless being so intertwined with each other.
I'd like to see a showdown video of There's Something About Marrying and Goo Goo Gah Gah Pain since both episodes focus on major character arka for the two women, Patty finally coming out as a lesbian and Selma adopting a baby
Patty actually was hetero and dated Skinner in the erarly seasons. But when he proposed she declined because of her twin Selma and he understood. And now they became just such shallow characters only serving the plot.
Oh, I've got a GUT feeling Uter's around here someplace... after all, isn't there a little Uter in all of us? In fact, you could say that we ATE Uter, and he's in our STOMACHS right now! Wait, scratch that last one.
One of my earliest Simpsons memories is watching with my dad and seeing him laugh harder at Itchy and Scratchy than I had ever seen him laugh at anything before or since. Been one of my favorite parts of the show ever since.
having the content warning at the END of the video was a very funny gag, i noticed and appreciated that, best joke in the vid. "tipping my cap to you for that one" haha
My parents used to shut off the TV when the Itchy and Scratchy shorts came on. I used to hate that, but in retrospect, they were probably right to censor that part of The Simpsons from 2-7 year olds.
Woah woah woah! already in the introduction i've learnt something new. I never knew the lyrics said "bite" as well. i thought they always just kept saying "fight and fight".
I&S are at their best when they are portraying scenarios relevant to the plot of the episode, i.e. Scratchy in space when Homer was in space. They were also a great excuse for the series to deviate from the more down to Earth world of Springfield into a more cartoony one, which doesn't translate well given the fact that neo Simpsons is all about being really random all the time
I’d like to see a histories episode on Waylon Smithers. How he went from being a closet homosexual, to an openly gay person. It reflects not only society’s attitude, but the shows attitude towards the LGBT community.
Smithers is one of the few gay characters in fiction who's a character that just happens to be gay, most gay character's entire personality is being gay which is boring and unrealistic. Smithers is a real character
@@usermcskull4713 its not that many lol. Most just happen to be gay, and sometimes it plays an important role in a plot. But *surprise* being gay is a big part of gay peoples lives, and it affects how they are treated in society and in certain situations, and some people are proud of being gay which is fine
@@MatthewSmith-jy3eu i think they meant there's few shows that focus on the life of a gay character besides their sexuality, it's like an established fact while telling another story about them. I see your point, though.
Honestly I kind of miss when itchy and scratchy shorts were related to the plot of the episode and now they’re just basic movie parodies which kind of sucks
First off, masterful job exploring all the facets of Itchy and Scratchy. Second, it's weird to me how much the duo gets leaned on for general entertainment commentary when there's still so much to real estate available in animation itself. The death of 2D animated features, the hyper-commodification of characters with lowest denominator appeal, the cookie-cutter adult-oriented series on streaming platforms, the current industry apocalypse. . .there's still so content to mine within the field! It's almost like the writers just stopped observing the animation landscape 15 years ago.
Its just mediocre, not awfull or bad, just mediocre and forgetable (that to me Is worse than beeing bad because at least beeing bad give you some type of inpact like the room) . Just like the ghostbusters reboot it was nothing but a clickbait articule to create controversy in histroy, even though the end result Is nothing but a poor proyect that no one Will remember, because everybody Will remember the controversy More rather than the movie itself. Kinda like men on black international without the controversy.
I always feel like Itchy and Scratchy was sort of 'cut the formalities' gag on the cat and mouse formula, just going straight to the mouse decimating the cat. I see so many fans who admit they NEVER rooted for the mouse in those sort of cartoons. They always liked when Tom won for example or they thought Jerry was even more of a sadistic little bastard than him (hell in sometimes we DO see an Itchy and Scratchy format cartoon, Canned Feud for example). There's always an assumption with this formula that we are meant to root for the little vermin because they are smaller and thus the 'underdog' even when the cartoon bends to their will enough that God himself will help him smite the cat unprovoked. :P
Even Chuck Jones was aware of this formula and spent most of his career twisting and subverting the idea of "prey=good, predator=bad". Just watch any Hubie and Bertie cartoon, for example.
@@conormurnane6457 I think the key reason Tom and Jerry still holds up is that it played it intentionally a lot of times as well (again Jerry LOST several cartoons, the writers knew he wasn't innocent by default). A lot of copycats seemed to overlook that complexity and just think it's 'chasing, chasing, mouse beats up cat', with heavy emphasis on the last part. This is likely why the show chose Herman and Catnip as a direct basis for example. Jones curiously made fun of how simple Tom and Jerry chase cartoons were earlier by making Road Runner. When he was actually charged with Tom and Jerry himself and had to try replicate their chemistry, he admitted it was a more complex process than he expected.
Jones' Tom & Jerry shorts felt so weird. It's obvious he was better suited to more cerebral, slower-paced cartoons, feels like he just couldn't get his head around the manic style of T&J. Also, it was around the same time when his films veered into this cutesy, self-satisfied style that I never liked.
The only "real life" appearance I remember of Itchy & Scratchy, besides the THOH, is in Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder were they are contestants on that celebrity game show. I remember watching that as a kid and being very confused lol Great video as always, I suggest Monty Burns for the next Simpson Histories
00:00 WTF!? How have I watched The Simpsons for nearly 20 years and only just realised that there are actual lyrics to the Itchy&Scratchy song!? I always thought those were just random noises being made!
ok idk if it's my favorite of all times, but one thing that always made me laugh was Scratchy getting his heart ripped out and putting it up on the shelf as a decoration and then sitting down to read the paper and the headline says: You need your heart to live, and then he dies lol You know an episode about Jimbo or any of the bullies who haven't been covered yet would be fun.
The Wizard's Key joke gets me every time. It just makes me think of licensed video games of the early/mid 90's that were tonally clueless to the source material, and the awkwardness of being the kid who grew up with them. Probably not the intent of the joke but that's what I got out of it. Homer's "What the hell are you talking about?" reaction seals the deal.

There are two things I really want to see with Itchy and Scratchy. One, in the episode where Marge gets the cartoon changed for the worse, she writes down a list of the violence in the episode. One of the entries is, "Brains slammed in car door." I really want to see that episode hehe. Also the one mentioned in Itchy and Scratchy Land, where Itchy rips out Scratchy's lungs and plays them like a bagpipe, yet Scratchy is breathing comfortably in the next scene, heh. They need to make those episodes.
Honestly I think it's cool that they made a cartoon in the style of a Felix the Cat silent short, its pretty uncommon to see 1910s stuff referenced and they get the style down I just think theyre neat
Good shout. I love the episode where they get divorced- "Go ahead Homer, laugh at me" "I already did". It's also weird watching that family in early seasons- they're pretty functional, Kirk and Milhouse both aren't losers.

"why, why? my only son.."
Kinda funny how as The Simpsons itself started running out of ideas, Itchy and Scratchy was running out of ideas too.
hey one cant work without the other its kind of an easy tell to check for the quality of a season
Sweet upload Jims. I also liked the james rolfe ghostbusters 2016 review response nod.
I just discovered this series and I think it's amazing. I'd love to see episodes focussed on Lenny and Carl, Luigi, Super Intendant Chalmers, Selma or Patty or Sea Captain Mcalester.
Neat seeing you here, I’m subscribed to you both! I agree.
Super Intendat ? I think you mean Super Nintendo Chalmers
@@sylentknight - what is an Intendat
Oh I would ADORE an episode on Superintendent Chalmers!!!
I was so taken away by you reversing the order of Patty and Selma that I read their names as "Selmy or Patta".
Comic Book Guy Interests me I would like to see him get a Simpson’s histories video
Best Character Ever
You’re seriously one of my favourite UA-cam channels
Love your writing and essay technique and I admire your love and passion for one of the greatwst TV shows of all time
id like to see a history of rainier wolfcastle. how has he changed throughout the series now that ahnold is no longer a big action movie star?
"Itchy and Scratchy and Marge" showcases the best Itchy and Scratchy moments imo. Especially Scratchy's reaction to noticing the dynamite in his eyes.
I love the "nice" version that she forces them to make, it's so disturbing, much more than Scratchy getting disembowled.
20:11 hahaha, that was unexpected!
I like some of the subtle puns you breeze right past in these histories eg 0:50 "We're gonna cut up Itchy and Scratchy into distinct ... chunks"
Where is Üter? We just want closure.
Wasn't he beat to death by prop rifles at that civil war reenactment?
"God bless the man who invented permission slips"
Oh, I've got a GUT feeling Uter's around here someplace... after all, isn't there a little Uter in all of us? In fact, you could say that we ATE Uter, and he's in our STOMACHS right now!
Wait, scratch that last one.
“Don’t make me run, I’m full of chocolate!”
I had no clue how much I wanted this until now.
One of my earliest Simpsons memories is watching with my dad and seeing him laugh harder at Itchy and Scratchy than I had ever seen him laugh at anything before or since. Been one of my favorite parts of the show ever since.
That's right, Mr. Burns was actually shot by Itchy and Scratchy.
Plot twist, it was Poochie
@@c.d.rstudios4691 Nah, Poochie returned to his home planet.
@@ianfinrir8724 (and died on the way back to his home planet)
You should do a Simpsons Histories for Scott Christian. I have watched the show since 1990 and only recently realized there was a second news anchor.
I think we're overdue for a Simpsons Showdown.
having the content warning at the END of the video was a very funny gag, i noticed and appreciated that, best joke in the vid. "tipping my cap to you for that one" haha
"Itchy runs afoul of an Irishman"
Look out, Itchy, he's Irish!
@@Chud_Bud_Supreme Hey that's Theodore Roosevelt!
“A chance for more mis-nerif..”
Come on itchy! Kill him! Kill that guy! A chance for more mischi.
My parents used to shut off the TV when the Itchy and Scratchy shorts came on. I used to hate that, but in retrospect, they were probably right to censor that part of The Simpsons from 2-7 year olds.
They were right to do so.
Woah woah woah! already in the introduction i've learnt something new.
I never knew the lyrics said "bite" as well. i thought they always just kept saying "fight and fight".
JamesPlaysGames95 You’re not the only one
I thought I was the only one!
I&S are at their best when they are portraying scenarios relevant to the plot of the episode, i.e. Scratchy in space when Homer was in space. They were also a great excuse for the series to deviate from the more down to Earth world of Springfield into a more cartoony one, which doesn't translate well given the fact that neo Simpsons is all about being really random all the time
It's thanks to these two I can't end a list without saying "AND DINNER DAWG" at the end.
I can't believe after 35 seasons, they still haven't given Dinner Dog a spotlight episode
I love the one in the Simpsons Movie. The scream, followed by the sounds of eating a ridiculous quantity of missiles always gets me.
I’d like to see a histories episode on Waylon Smithers. How he went from being a closet homosexual, to an openly gay person. It reflects not only society’s attitude, but the shows attitude towards the LGBT community.
Transmission Rory I second
Smithers is one of the few gay characters in fiction who's a character that just happens to be gay, most gay character's entire personality is being gay which is boring and unrealistic.
Smithers is a real character
Might be a good crossover with Matt Baume, who does histories of gay characters on TV.
"This is going to be one of the weirder Simpsons Histories".
I mean, aren't the weird ones the best ones?
Honestly I kind of miss when itchy and scratchy shorts were related to the plot of the episode and now they’re just basic movie parodies which kind of sucks
That's... Not new.
Now Pinitcchio, don’t you lie.
I promise I will never hurt you!
@@MotownFan1962 OUTCHE!!!
I wonder if this violence really does discentitise us.
Want to get a snowcone ok
Fighting and Biting for 30 Years.
"Eey! My threads baby!"
One of your best videos yet. Such a great analysis.
Itchy & Scratchy was always my favorite part of The Simpsons as a kid
17:46 Haha no way! TheRealJims must have been freakin’ HIGH on WEED when he wrote this joke!
12:33: "No review. I refuse." THEREALJIMS WATCHES AVGN
This may be your best one yet. Very thorough and thought provoking.
It always brightens my day when your videos come out
Wiggum would be an interesting character to talk about next.
He's a very good actor. I wonder why we never saw that part of him again.
Ash Kitt This bird’s gotta fly!
The only "real life" appearance I remember of Itchy & Scratchy, besides the THOH, is in Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder were they are contestants on that celebrity game show. I remember watching that as a kid and being very confused lol
Great video as always, I suggest Monty Burns for the next Simpson Histories
00:00 WTF!? How have I watched The Simpsons for nearly 20 years and only just realised that there are actual lyrics to the Itchy&Scratchy song!? I always thought those were just random noises being made!
The Itchy and Scratchy... and Poochie Show!!!!
I think we all want "Moe" of these Simpsons Histories videos.
ok idk if it's my favorite of all times, but one thing that always made me laugh was Scratchy getting his heart ripped out and putting it up on the shelf as a decoration and then sitting down to read the paper and the headline says: You need your heart to live, and then he dies lol You know an episode about Jimbo or any of the bullies who haven't been covered yet would be fun.
Also I was thinking today on my way to work, Snake would make an excellent episode.
You ended with my favorite Itchy & Scratchy moment: that "preceding program" notice. Totally caught me off guard. 😂
Next some kid will ask Bart how to fight space mutants and finish their homework in their sleep!
My man actually did it. Thanks heaps Jim!

Love the channel! These Simpsons Histories are one of my favorite UA-cam series to follow. Also I think that a video on Kent Brockman would be an interesting addition.
My absolute favorite moment is when itchy prays right before eating scratchy, and it sounds like he's mumbling latin. I swear everytime me and my sister go out to eat we do a little mumble prayer
Your videos are so thorough I love it so much !! It’s actually really impressive !!
Can you do a Simpons Histories on Lenny?
Not Lenny!
"I imagine a lot of kids didn't look at escalators the same way after this one."
Yup. Still don't in my 30s. I always have to jump off escalators thanks to that cartoon.
"Kids, don't do drugs!"
You know I've never understood what that had to do with Itchy lightly hitting Scratchy on the head with a baseball bat.
I no kidding bought a itchy and scratchy @ the quickie mart at universal Orlando today, And I'm just pleased as punch listening to your most excellent history of the little hellraisers.
Seeing how violent Itchy and Scratchy are makes Tom and Jerry very tame in comparison!
The editing in this video is amazing.
Honestly I think it's cool that they made a cartoon in the style of a Felix the Cat silent short, its pretty uncommon to see 1910s stuff referenced and they get the style down
I just think theyre neat
for the next histories i'd suggest Bart's friend's parents, Kirk and Luann Van Houten
That would be a good given their character arkes
Good shout. I love the episode where they get divorced- "Go ahead Homer, laugh at me" "I already did". It's also weird watching that family in early seasons- they're pretty functional, Kirk and Milhouse both aren't losers.
12:38 "No Review. I refuse." That hit me so freaking hard. What a time 2016 was.
I feel like 2016 was the real start of 2020.
