Thank you so much for saving me from buying the wrong computer! I was about to buy an 830 and had no idea the nav wasn't as good

830 is a great computer just lacking in some of the Nav features. The explore has a slower processor which gets irritating sometimes, but it's a very reliable computer with excellent simplicity.

But he doesn't tell you how bad the battery is. Do a bit of research on them before you buy. The battery % drops pretty fast and when it gets to 0% it can still stay on for up to 10 hours. They are so inaccurate it's crazy.

Thanks! I mostly just want a digital map so I don't get lost in new cities. That point of interest thing is cool. My phone is super laggy and inaccurate at times.

Had this unit for a year now - works perfectly no issues. I don't use navigation, hardly at all. I go on my 25 mile loop and track heart rate and cadence mainly. It just works. Easy to see, and if you need to save battery, it can be set to turn the screen off. What's really cool is that even with the screen off, as soon as a car starts to come up behind me, the Varia radar (that I have paired) turns the screen on...until the car passes and then the screen turns off again. Very nice.

I ordered a silicone gel case for mine to help keep it safe if I was to drop mine. After seeing your video I ordered it immediately. I bought the out front mount for it as well to put it in front of me and away from my sweaty face. Love my Garmin Edge Explore….Rob K

Among the tons of other fancy yt channels yours opinion and last 3 minutes gave me the most valuable insight about this Garmin. Definitely it is for me and for my bike trips. If it can navigate me to the nearest Trailforks route then this Garmin is for me. Thanks a lot!

I can only echo your positive comments. I have this model and I find it great whilst on holiday. I throw the wife and kids in the car, gently place the Brompton in the boot and spend a lovely couple of hours each morning exploring the local area before the gang wake up.

Yes! Your garmin had caught my eye while watching your video's & I've waited patiently for a video about it. Happy day, thank you! I'm just back from a road trip where the phone network was very limited, non-existent in places & my navigation was severely affected. Good advice, get a garmin.

Great and honest video and different than the others. I slightly have to disagree with the phone vs Garmin edge part. I usually don't plan the route ahead so just roam on the map and occasionally just point on a destination. For this, the phone does a better job. I use LocusMap (Android only). On the Edge Explore I lack the route coloring features. I hate that you have to type in the whole address in order to navigate. It's not enough to just enter a road name. I don't want to ruin the show, don't get me wrong. This is the best bike trip/navigation computer I am just in the middle of a huge hesitation if I need this over my phone nav.

I have been using phones rather than Garmins for years. Bought a Garmin edge explore for use when it rains and phone screens die or get confused by surface water.
I wanted to be able to transfer a GPX file to the device and follow it. Took me a little while toget my head around it but it is now simple to take a gpx file created with an external app, upload to device and follow. Some good things I di not expect.
The app on phone shows a course with distance markers. Very handy for answering those 'are we there yet' questions..
There is a facility to alllow others to follow your track. A useful safety feature.
You can lock the touch screen. Something I'd like to be able to do with a phone. Prevents accidental unwanted changes....
Importing maps was easy enough, much the same as older Garmins. Easy to choose which one to use if you upload several.
And at present the Explore is price-reduced because there is a new model.

It’s all confusing…. The simple answer is ….

I own a Garmin Edge Explore. I particularly love its bright, tactile screen. Navigation features need no further comment. I do miss a couple features that lack: 1) barometric altimeter 2) Glonass and/or Galileo support. Whenever I'm climbing a mountain I miss knowing the GRADIENT of the current slope. I miss it so badly.

Long time touring cyclist and I've always used paper maps and a basic bicycle computer. I'm contemplating the electronic upgrade and kind of torn. I already have the Garmin InReach Mini 2 which tethers to my phone (via Garmin Explore). This works just fine, but I'm trying to understand the advantage(s) of going with the dedicated device for navigation. Generally, I don't use my phone for much other than texting and calls while touring. I also carry a single battery back up that so I can recharge as necessary.

You can use goole maps to navigate without cell connection and use your bike battery or an external battery to keep it charged. As for the precision some phone can use Glonass or other positioning system like wifi SSID, ... when you are in a city.

The only drawback with the Edge Explore is it won’t connect to a power meter but I won’t be using a power meter any time soon. I’m not a pro cyclist so I’ve no worries on that score. I’ve also found that it syncs to Strava pretty easily, telling me how hard a climb was etc, plus a lot of other information besides.

Reasons given for picking the Explore still apply to the new Explore 2 which I just bought. I really wanted the new 840 but just have no use for all the training and performance features and the larger Explore 2 also works better for my diminishing eyesight. Plus, with the new 2 you can hook up power meter and other sensors. I'm really surprised more people don't go with the Explore, it would probably satisfy the needs of the majority of cyclists.

I guess I am one of those people happy with the smartphone for navigation - the improved (but limited to a small - but growing - number of cities) Apple maps with cycling directions is excellent in London. I agree for isolated areas a more dedicated solution would be more useful. As far as tracking my rides I also actually use my phone / watch and the fitness app does a great job. I used to have a Garmin about 10 years ago and was very frustrating to upload maps etc. The software of the explore looks better - but why does the hardware have to look so dated - that screen! And is it still the frustrating micro-usb (that still is all too prevalent in the cycling world)?

    • @RadiantTwilight

I think I should apologize for being negative in my comments. This unit can be yours for $200, I just bought it. I was abit frustrated by not having buttons like on the gpsmap 60.
I now have used on the bike for 2 short rides. The screen works ok in sunlight. I do however think the unit/map chooses strange routes. Maybe an update of the map will help.
It really does reroute if you deviate from the original route.

    • @mega2373man
      @mega2373man 2 роки тому +1

Choice of a route is dependent on several variables. The course creator & how it was mapped out. Also, the Edge Explorer route settings . . .
Select Menu > Ride Settings > Routing.
      * Popularity Routing (Calculates routes based on the most popular rides from Garmin Connect).
      * Routing Mode (Sets the transportation method to optimize your route).
      * Calculation Method (Sets the method used to calculate your route).
      * Lock on Road (Locks the position icon, which represents your position on the map, onto the nearest road).
      * Avoidance Setup (Sets the road types to avoid while navigating).
      * Recalculation (Automatically recalculates the route when you deviate from the route).
All of these options can result in possible different course navigation options. If you don’t want any off course recalculations, simply turn the option off. Hope this helps.

I have just got my new Garmin Explore after some/a long time searching for the least expensive sample to buy here in Denmark, on our local version of Price Runner, which mostly promote shops, which are paying for the privilege to be there. I only need a - map, while riding in strange places, so all the other exciting stuff is of no interest and I don't even own an, expensive to buy and own, Smartphone, so I needed to be able to update it here, on my computer! And I don't need to be able to brag to eventual fellow riders: I'm here now, suckers or to receive phone calls, while riding. I haven't even used it till now, just updated to latest maps for our upcoming vacation. Finn. Denmark

I am a fairly new cyclist. This Garmin edge explore has just the functions that I would want on it. I see that you did the video 9 months ago? Do I need to know about any newer model that has replaced this particular model as I am going to buy soon? Thanks,

I am still using mine. I do believe they have an updated edge explore which has a better processing power and a few more features but I have not got the chance to try one out.

Mount with the rubber bands is supposed to go on your stem not handlebar...

I have the Garmin Edge 820 and it's fantastic however when tried to use the maps it was useless.
There was nothing technically wrong with maps, the problem is screen size, I just had to keep zooming in and zooming out all the time to see where I am and what is around me, as well as thinking which route I would like to go on.
If I need to look at a map I'll get my phone out and use that because of screen size.
But everything else on my Garmin is fantastic.

I am looking for a touring computer and have had an edge 810 forever. I think this is a better option to upgrade to. But I didn’t see cadence sensors, did it not come with them??

No. Sensors are separate. This unit is more of a budget option.

I only need it to replace a physical map with navigation, no other stuff like heart beat, pedal measure, etc. what would you recommend?

Hi , great video, just what I need. However,I have an older smartphone and can't download the Garmin App. Does that mean I won't be able to use the Edge Explore?

Great video - I've a Garmin watch which works well for recording my rides etc. Like the idea of a dedicated gadget for navigation though: do you know if this works in other countries? I'm in the UK & am hoping to take my Brompton out to the US & NZ when things get back to normal & it'd b nice to not get lost for a change!:
