Elvis was one of the kindest people in the world! He didn’t see color. I’m from Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Elvis always came and hung out on my street. The Brown family lived beside me and they were a musical family. He was SO content coming here, where no one bothered him, just accepted him and he loved it that way. It’s been decades and NO ONE has even come close to that iconic voice. I was little, but was aware of who Elvis was but I only saw him as a gentle man who came to my block and hung out with the kids. That’s what I remember

I grew up in Memphis and Elvis was the kindest person ever. He gave away cars, jewelry even houses to strangers.
He grew up in poverty but he never forgot his roots. He was very generous to people he didn't even know!

The Brown family which was a musical family lived beside me and he came for days at a time and stayed. I was little but was aware of who Elvis was. Even tho he was a huge SUPERSTAR, he was more content hanging out on my block, playing with us kids where no one bothered him than he was in front of thousands. He loved to sing and his popularity got even to big for him which is why his life took a different path and we lost him. For me, I don’t remember the SUPERSTAR, I remember the man with the cool hair coming over to my yard regularly to play with us kids (everyone use to gather in my yard for some reason but they did 😂)
Elvis grew up dirt poor. His momma taught him right. He believed in "Giving Back". Even though he was a Star and had money he Served in the Army and afterwards he was a Very Generous person. He was a True Humanitarian.
Elvis knew how it was like to grow up there, but he never forgot his roots, rest assured that Elvis was a good human being. He never stopped being humble to people even if he had the millions on him
And he never toured Europe, despite the demand, because his owner the ""Colonel" couldn't control the receipts -- the money. And Elvis, like a goog little slave, submitted to the "Colonel," saying, "Yes sir!"
@@jnagarya519 You're right, the colonel treated Elvis like a puppet and he didn't even say something, something strange had to have happened for Elvis not to fire him or I don't know, to find another representative. What seems weirder to me is that Elvis's ex-wife, Priscilla, said that colonel Tom Parker was a genius and that he was always attentive to the life of Elvis and his family, and to be honest, I don't believe her at all
This performance was 1970 in Vegas.
Several opera singers back then said that Elvis could easily do what they did musically but they couldn't do what he did. American Trilogy from Aloha From Hawaii 1973 and several other songs show his admiration for those epic opera notes.
I attended 2 of his concerts in 1972 and, other than having my children, that will forever and always be the most epic and emotional experience of my life.
I agree with what you are saying about parent responsibility. Our children are the future and our legacy. It is the part of us we leave when we depart from this world. Spirituality is the backbone to what we are. It teaches us values, love for humanity and ourselves. Elvis was a religious man and grew up poor. He was very generous, enjoyed giving gifts to friends and strangers. God gave him his talent and he shared it with the world.

Elvis grew up in poverty and had many black friends. He never forgot it. At a concert in Texas, he was asked to get rid of his black chord ladies. Then he said that then there would be no concert if they did not join .. There is a documentary on UA-cam called Elvis and the black community (if I remember correctly) greetings from Norway. 😀

What I really love about this song...the backup singers really drive it at the end. A lot of "big" artists would want to be the focus at the end, or at least that's how it seems to me.

Amen, it was refreshing to see a young person with his mind set! He totally got the meaning behind this, I have watched many reactions to this and some totally miss the message, or they go straight to race. This isn't about race, Whites have Ghettos too! And NO, they are no different than any other Ghetto! Poor is poor, no matter what area of town it is in! I know, I grew up in the White Ghetto!
Amen, I agree with your last statement. Should treat everybody with respect. We seem to be missing that these days. A good church is a great place to start. I am an Elvis fan to the core. Elvis being raised in a very poor neighborhood and his father said there were times they only had a piece of cornbread to eat, but they raised Elvis to respect everybody and to help others whenever he could. Elvis said, in an interview in the 50's that his favorite scripture in the Bible was "what does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul!" He gave everything he could to everyone. I have heard a lot of videos on Elvis generous heart but they barley scratch the surface of his giving. God bless you.

The string of hits that Elvis had in the years of 1968 & 1969 (when I was in junior high) made me understand why he was such a respected singer. I hadn't "got it" before then. My favorite is "If I Can Dream" & I really hope you'll react to that one. He performed that song at the end of one of his TV specials after Martin Luther King was assassinated It's utterly brilliant.
Loved your reaction very much Elvis was the best friend i ever had in my entire life. we met when i was young. but our friendship lasted past that one day in time 10 yrs to be exact i never asked anything of him and he never asked anything of me, he and i just needed a friend and we were that to each other i was just a kid he didn't treat me like i was a stupid teenage girl. He was very funny he loved to crack jokes i tried not to laugh but he was so funny you couldn't not laugh. the memories of my friend are tucked safe in my heart forever. seeing him dancing and singing breaks my heart because i know he is not here anymore my mind understands but my heart never will, i saw him a few weeks before he passed we had a short conversation which i will never share again because people are so nasty and comment hurtful heart breaking things they do not know me but they still can't keep their mouths closed about things they know nothing about. His body failed him but his voice never did. i walk past Graceland everyday and sometimes i go in they know me there lol.. love to you from the one and only Memphis Tn.
Much admiration to Elvis for singing this song. He was popular. He was wealthy. His fans at this concert would have been delighted with another love song, but he chose to sing this song. Much respect.

Its pretty obvious that Mac Davis was talking about the plight of black people trapped in the ghetto. Anyone who knows anything about Elvis and what he cared about knows he was singing about black people. A brave statement in the conservative era when he sang it.
Yep. You got it! Mac himself spoke on this in many interviews.... even though some fans over the years that also insist "This song was not about any specific color" ( oddly they act anemic to actually reading Macs interviews).
Mac talked about how his father had a close friend that was a black man named Alan Smith, and he had a little son named Smitty Junior... (Mac and little Smitty Junior were childhood Playmates).
He was always bothered by how Smitty Jr. couldn't go to the same school with him due to racial segregation, and why he and his father lived on a side of town with other ppl of color in a ghetto.
Mac always said it was that childhood memory, coupled with when he was older and seeing similar things happening in ghettos around the country that inspired him to turn his memory into a song.
And when Elvis was in the studio people close to him at that time said there were serious discussions about the content of this song and clearly everyone felt the message was to address the extreme ongoing impoverishment happening to Black Americans.
There are a few that said Elvis had some white folks telling him *not to record this*.
I always respected the fact that because of that very thing, he ignored those protests, and stood on this message anyway.
And I know many older black folks from that era that appreciated Elvis using his public platform to promote this message and song.

The song was very controversial back then and Mac Davis who was a great singer in his own right but came to Elvis with the song , and Elvis recorded it
it really was not all that controversial by this point in 1968. There was already way too much protest material out there, on the news, on the music charts, etc, so the song was no surprise in its' content, other than it was Elvis doing it. That is, here we had this relic of the 1950's, stereotyped as a B-actor in the mid 60's, but then he rises out of nowhere to be this unexpectedly pristine performer of relevant material he recorded from 68-71.

As a White Hispanic who grew up with a single mom, I can identify with this song too. Ironically, the song was written by Mac Davis, a white man, and sang by another white man, Elvis. The color wasn't mentioned in the song so its meaning conveys a message that's more of a social economic issue. Obviously, when Elvis sang this song it's impact was more relatable to the Civil Unrest at the time and the first message that most people interpret is of the Black Ghetto. That being said, any race or ethnic group of people, whether they be Asian, Hispanic, White or Black can identify with the message of this song. Thank you for pointing this out. I agree completely.

When this song was offered to the talented black singer Sammy Davis jr, he said "I couldn't do this song justice, I wasn't born in a Ghetto, but I know someone who did grow up in the ghetto, Elvis Presley. the rest is history.
That last little thing Elvis did in that song is something he picked up when he started doing Vegas it's like a his signature at the end of every Vegas show I know this was Hawaii I believe I'm not sure where he was here but he took that from Vegas and started adding it to other shows that he played but he never did add in his early days that's something that's started in his latter days when he started playing a lot in Vegas.
Elvis spent his formative years in Lauderdale Courts... the projects in Memphis. He knew real poverty. Perhaps this is why the song had meaning for him.

Funny you mention parents who have kids when they can't even support themselves. I learned a fact recently thats pretty sad for our species. Many birds have the capability to lay a certain amount of eggs but they only lay the amount they can provide for. For example they can lay 8 but only lay 4 because thats what their current environment and resources allows for. Millions of humans can't figure that one out though lmao.

Man, you should cover Elvis doing if I could dream, which was a tribute song both to dr. Martin Luther King as well as Bobby Kennedy. His 1968 Comeback Special with him in the white suit is the most iconic performance ever I think. And it's another serious song obviously, it doesn't have all the crazy dance stuff which by the way if you want that, check out his live Vegas performance of suspicious minds in the white jumpsuit while he was still in really good shape. It's hilarious and jaw-dropping.
Sadly, this song is still relevant today. So glad Elvis did this song and shout out to the late Mac Davis for writing it.
