Eddie was definitely past his prime when this happened but he is still an American racing legend. One of the handful of Americans that raced in the dangerous era of F1. Had several podium finishes but more importantly is still alive to tell the stories. Accidents happen, it's part of racing people.
The odd thing is, that Indy possibly had the largest F1 crowd ever in 2000, with over 225,000 people attending. I have no idea of the numbers from the more recent numbers, but I assume their pretty high. And the first thing you said, yah, that would certainly add attention. The question would be, how much and for how long. And it would depend highly of their ability to succeed, which is difficult if you're not racing for one of the top teams.
Didn't Cheever hang up his helmet not long after this? Sadly it looks like a driver who's losing or has lost that extra edge of awareness that a racing driver needs. Totally Cheevers fault but I don't think there was any intent in that at all, after all he drove in F1 in the days when something like that could easily kill another driver...
in 1993, McLaren was using a factory supply of Ford engines and was severly underpowered in 1993. Also, I don't consider Cheever's win in Indy worth anything...he had no competition that year!
It's an odd wreck, Cheever was runnin the racing line when you consider the water. When they ask what was he doing, he was moving over wide to get an angle on the corner, he had just gotten to the point he'd miss the water and I doubt he thought anyone was taking a line that'd carry them through the water. No racing driver would run through a puddle that deep and for all intents and purposes that hunk of track wasn't there, it might as well have been grass. It was clumsy on both parts really.
This might have been another win for Andretti, he was taken out by an old rivalry of his dad. Don't take the anger out on the son if you don't like the dad...not fair to Marco.
Their still human, and when you're running as far back as Cheever was, and as long as he's been racing, its probably easy to forget what's going on. Remember, this was well into the race, Cheever has settled into a rhythym by then. Then again, if it can happen to the leader, it will happen if the leader's last name is Andretti.
Ok then, let's go over the facts: Cheever spent multiple seasons in F1 with a few podium finishes. Michael didn't complete a season with 1 podium. Cheever has an Indy 500 win. Michael does not.
@SaintBEEP probably the most incorrect statement I have ever read. Driving any vehicle fast takes a vast amount of skill. Both drag and Indy take large amounts of timing and control. Every split second is vital and difficult to be on the ball.
I remember watching this live, Marco was killing everyone in the rain going so much faster than everyone else it was such a disappointment taking away what was a well deserved sure first win for Marco. Also at the end of the video, its hard to hear in this audio but when i watched it live you could hear the fans booing Cheaver and calling him names, that's what the thumb up was about.
Looks to me you fail at seeing the difference between being upset and whining. Yes Michael has every right to be upset, but he didn't have to go as far as saying Cheever doesn't belong on the track. That right there is the typical Michael Andretti whine.
Very Ironic. It's Eddie Cheever instead of an Andretti. Has Micheal Andretti forgotten the fun he had in '93. reminds me of Micheal Schumacher in '97 at Jerez with Jaques Villeneuve.
Cheever was definitely at fault per the general consensus but it seems unrealistic that he would do that on purpose, from the outside looking in of course.
No, it wasn't on purpose unless he's a total moron. In open wheel you avoid contact at all cost since it usually ends bad for all parties. The truth is that Cheever was a bad driver. Just look at his mediocre attempt in F1.
"Just look at his mediocre attempt in F1." Cheever was more successful in F1 than Michael Andretti ever was. What with his 9 podiums and 70 career points over the course of 11 years. Michael failed to complete a single season. And was outclassed by Hakkinen in testing.
also remember Eddie did quite well in F1 while Mikey fail like a chump. didnt even finish the 1st season. He was in a mclearn to boot. it was a "bad" year for the team, but he couldnt make it. Same with zanardi, bad team. he also could not get a handle on the carbon brakes.
I was at that race and watching from that section. Notice Marco drives through that BIG puddle of water! Nobody was driving through that pond. It was rain on and off all day and the race line was on the dry parts, like F1. Cheever was racing the line. I give the kid kudos for trying but he could of got him on the front or back stretch, easy. Also Mikes comments are embarrassing. The thumbs up from Cheever was directed to our sector, you get a little rowdy when the wreck happen in front of you.
Well, having a Nascar date has nothing to do with having a F1 date. I love the Nascar guys at these tracks, especially Watkins Glen. I don't think the owners, ISC, have any interest any doing something like that. Even if they did, there would need to be an enormous amount of improvements necessary to make the track safe for F1's speeds. A bit unfortunate, especially after losing Indy's race. I guess I'll have to wait a little longer to finally get a chance to see them in action.
Andretti would've challenged for winning both the road courses if it hadn't been for that move. He had been running faster than Castroneves and Dixon, the two who were ahead there.
Eddie Cheever was a pretty good F1 driver, he was pretty good in CART, and he was pretty good in the IRL, but by 2006 he was washed up and the only reason he was driving was because his team could not afford to pay another driver. This was not a malicious crash on Eddie's part, he just screwed up royally.
I dont know about you guys, but I have to agree with Michael Andretti, I dont think Cheever should be driving like that for a veteren. But than again, Cheever didnt notice Marco, but he should know he is there coz Cheever's pit crew must have informed him.
1st: Be polite. 2e:It's was a mile away from William , with Ferrari and Benneton. Just look the qualification time at Bresil and Europe round: Andretti he's in the same second then Senna... But boot was at 2 seconds down from the William. And Senna, he's all a driver.
He was just running a normal racing line going up the hill coming out of the boot. It was an incredibly stupid crash caused by Cheever simply not paying attention to the leaders coming through, but I don't see anything that looks intentional about it.
You give the faster car the room, especially when he's fourth and you're two laps of the pace. I don't think he's stupid enough to pull that on purpose but like the color commentator said, he just wasn't paying attention. That's not an excuse, racers need to have complete focus on what's going on around them, especially back markers.
cheever was two laps down dude. marco was running up towards the front and might have had a shot at winning the race if i remember correctly. to do something as careless as cheever did, is not only unsafe, its just plain stupidity. michael has every reason to be upset: his son could have been injured, and his $800,000 car just got totaled because cheever was careless. i fail to see how thats whining.
@FrodothePuppet Indy drivers transitioning to F1 have 1,00s of internal issues to deal with before they can even think about what the competition is doing..
F1 is coming back to the track in indy. It has been redone for the moto GP race this fall. It runs counter clockwise and the silly "hair pins" are gone. It was the first time in history that the FIA sent the motoGP and F1 officials to a track together. The new layout is approved. The race was "lost" because of the "tire fiasco" made it unprofitable to the IMS. when the FIA came asking for MORE money the IMS said no way. Scott Speed was in a bad car, end of story.
i do support our auto companys. thats why i've bought american trucks. I've had 3 chevy truck and all made it to 245,000 mile with no major break downs or replacements. then i bought a crysler town and country (34,000.00). it hasn't made it to 100,00 miles and I've dumped about 6,000 into it. I will never ever buy an american car or van. however fords and chevys do make a good truck. so if they can make a good truck, why cant they do it with cars ?
I take the idiot comment back, a bit harsh. The McLaren wasn't a bad car as Senna and Hakkinen proved (Senna - 5 wins, Hakkinen - stunning debut). Unfortunately for Michael, he made too many mistakes, had his unfair shared of bad luck (South Africa,Canada and Brazil in particular) and was paired with the greatest driver to ever grace the sport.
if this were the first, or second, or maybe even the third time that cheever had done something like this, i would agree with you, but the fact that cheever has a history of causing such stupid incidents as this shows that maybe he SHOULDN'T be on the racetrack. just like if someone wasn't paying attention on the freeway and ran you off the road and wrecked your care because they were careless. you would say, "that person shouldn't be on the road because they were careless" that's not whining.
It doesn't matter what i drive. Stop digressing. Just because someone drives a car from a certain company doesn't mean they're this or that kind of a person, in fact those thoughts are similar and are shallow as the thoughts of judging someone based on their skin color.
Andretti was a catastrophe on F1 because of a lot of think(Wife, try limit rule be FIA,McLaren car and Budget)... But not because is was bad driver or an idiot.
"It's more better?" I hereby revoke your right to use the word "dumb" unless it's used in reference to yourself. As far as Honda being dumb, I have a 1.6l Honda that revs to 8500rpm and makes 160hp stock. No american car manufacturer can get close to 100hp per liter without forced induction. Plus they make shitty cars, that's why they are all going bankrupt.
Indy is tougher than NASCAR: open wheels. That being said Cheever must have had chick in the car with him to be THAT out if touch. It's like the two pilots on their laptops as they fly past thier destination at 30k feet. Bone head move.
Funny hearing Michael Andretti calling someone a waste when you compare his F1 career to Eddie Cheevers. Michael raced for McLaren and had like 5 or 6 races... I also have a '98 Grand Cherokee 5.9, I wanted something big for the wife and baby that was also fast. I wanted a small sporty car that was good on gas and dependable, I bought my Del Sol. Give me an example of an American sports car that will do what my honda will for the same money.
this is THE KID's fault. that was a stupid place to pass early in the race. thats not much of a straight and the car on the left has to get immediately to the right to take the next turn. inexperienced impatient kid.

Nobody ever drove faster in Indy 500 race than Eddie Cheever. In 1996 he set the fastest race lap to date at 236.103 mph.
Eddie Cheever has the longest career of any American in F1.
The odd thing is, that Indy possibly had the largest F1 crowd ever in 2000, with over 225,000 people attending. I have no idea of the numbers from the more recent numbers, but I assume their pretty high.

ten year old comment. still relevant .. fuck eddie

It's funny that Michael Andretti's comments about Cheever are almost exactly the same as Mario Andretti's comments about Dick Simon 20 years ago.

Would make a perfect Cialis commercial don't you think ??
Andretti would've challenged for winning both the road courses if it hadn't been for that move. He had been running faster than Castroneves and Dixon, the two who were ahead there.
Is it just me or did the suspension in that car hold up exceptionally well... Usually with that kind of contact, it just snaps...
Gosh I love Eddie Cheever. He's a REAL racer (which seems to be a dying breed in the IRL now), not like that loser Baby Marco.
Yea, although the wins arent there, Marco has been having some lousy luck too. On the other hand, he is the runner up to Target/Penske's dominance
95 del sol vtec, can't seem to find an exact original price, but it would have been around 18k.
Eddie Cheever was a pretty good F1 driver, he was pretty good in CART, and he was pretty good in the IRL, but by 2006 he was washed up and the only reason he was driving was because his team could not afford to pay another driver. Cheever caused many accidents that was not his fault, ask him,
Nothing was ever his fault. My only question is, with how stupid Cheever is, why is he not on Trumps staff?
1st: Be polite.
2e:It's was a mile away from William , with Ferrari and Benneton.

Poor Marco... Marco rules. Cheever is a fine driver, but his hatred to Andretti is appaling. To take a kid out of his race is real ugly.
Perhaps he was talking on the radio, and not paying attention. I doubt he did it on purpose.
That was very Milka Dunno of you Ed
You give the faster car the room, especially when he's fourth and you're two laps of the pace. Cheever was good and liquored up that day!
he had a nasty talk with him and told him the next time he would put him in the fence
it was Marco Andretti, he was leading and could get a victory on his first season
I take the idiot comment back, a bit harsh. The McLaren wasn't a bad car as Senna and Hakkinen proved (Senna - 5 wins, Hakkinen - stunning debut). Unfortunately for Michael, he made too many mistakes, had his unfair shared of bad luck

That doesn’t seem intentional.
Even in small formulas, you don’t see out and around very well.
did he get punished?
He has every right to be, considering that unlike Marco or Michael, he won the Indy 500.
I agree with everything Micheal said. Cheever is a bastard.
It doesn't matter what i drive. Stop digressing. Just because someone drives a car from a certain company doesn't mean they're this or that kind of a person, in fact those thoughts are similar and are shallow as the thoughts of judging someone based on their skin color.
what corner is that
p.s. sorry for my poor american racing knowledge ive just started watching indycar, nascar etc. i havent seen this corner i think
Must have zero mistake on openwheeler racing! The best!
I agree with Mario, but if you appiled that logic, there would be 2-3 cars out there.
a Mustang? I would change that answer to ONLY the GT.
Michael giving the typical Andretti whine...
@chriswinsagain how can you not see him serously
Yeah, just about the time he had left CART, after it truly mattered.
What the heck is Cheever's problem. He's such a %#@^* and he has anger issues.
Andretti was a catastrophe on F1 because of a lot of think(Wife, try limit rule be FIA,McLaren car and Budget)... But not because is was bad driver or an idiot.
I wanna see cheever's interview!!!
I was standing right there, and cheevers just moved over?? LOL
Geez.... Why'd he crash him? Oh well...
BTW, This video was uploaded on my Birthday! :D
*might agree with you. error on my part there.
"It's more better?" I hereby revoke your right to use the word "dumb" unless it's used in reference to yourself. Cheever didn't want to get lapped AGAIN , so he decides to go out in a crash. Dick move imo.
Touche. I still think Michael is a whiner though
he knew Marco was there
so if he always crashed in CART....then how is it that he managed to win 30 races, and lead over 5,000 laps in that series?.....just sayin
Imagine if he did that on purpose! Just think about it. What he was thinking?
Where were the blue flags?
He never saw him tho.
eddie cheaver was a great driver, he was....that was then this is now...he did have the car ...were gonna call it a momintary lasps in judgement
Wtf eddie....why
I like the Andretti family, but this was total overreaction from them. Eddie simply didn't see him, that's all !!
Michael is just crying because Eddie won an Indy 500, and he didn't. Moreover, Cheever did much better in F1 than that quitter Michael
acura is made by honda, and the last i checked they were doin better that american car companies. =]
all Andretti are babies except John.
Funny hearing Michael Andretti calling someone a waste when you compare his F1 career to Eddie Cheevers.
Michael raced for McLaren and had like 5 or 6 races... One podium, and the rest were DNF's that had nothing to do with an underpowered Ford engine.

Michael had made his fair share of idiotic mistakes and taken out TONS of other drivers.
Never liked Cheever or Andretti... But Michael was really showing his ass and looking almost as dumb as Cheever in this one.
Yes, obviously Cheever was not paying attention and that was 🏸 driving... But anyone my age who watched Michael in f1 knows he's not anywhere near a world class driver.
Or maybe Cheever's didn't think anyone was daredevil (stupid) enough to go through that big patch of water to try and pass with a corner coming up.
Cheever is an Indy500 winner as well ....
in 1998 if memory helps right.
no i mean the cars, no chevys fords what-so-ever.Its more better if you had more than just 1 manufacture in 1 series not some dumb honda
That was a bad move... :P
called a CAR actually mate lol
Honda are good enough, certainly beat any American car company I can think of =)
ok so its the long circuit
sorry the only u.s motorsport ibe been watching is nascar but im starting to watch indy cars and stuff
Happy belated birthday ! :-)
welp i guess whinedretti is at it again it was a racing incident.
Pretty boneheaded from ol Cheeve!
Cheever was liquored up!
3:11 😀
I'm being brainwashed? Along with my honda I haev an older F-250 with 172k miles on it, If I want a heavy truck I buy a Ford.
You're a dumb ass!
lol this is the worst possible opinion.
