    www.revzilla.com/common-tread/...
    With the challenge of living up to one of the largest legacies on two wheels, the hype around the release of the new Suzuki SV650 was as robust as the list of accolades is long. With such a pedigree for versatility, longevity, and general rider-happiness, Spurgeon was amped to get out to California and see what the 2017 edition to this time-tested lineup had to offer. In the Suzuki SV650 First Ride Review, Spurge and the RevZillaTV crew set up shop in the mountains north of Los Angeles for a spirited bit of riding along roadways that were obviously designed by a motorcyclist-at-heart. Accompanied by an article in Common Tread, this video documents Spurge’s initial thoughts, feedback, likes, and areas-of-improvement for one of the most popular bikes on the road… and the ZLA parking lot.

    One of the most underrated and ignored bike's out there but it's bullet proof and awesome. We buy them up used and strip them for track bike's. Really shine with few mods.

    I loved my SV650s, after a few mods. It had Racetech springs in front and heavier fork oil, M4 carbon slip-on made it sound better than a stock Ducati, tank grippers, touring windscreen, R6 throttle tube for faster ramp up. It would break the rear tire loose from torque and happily rode along at 2,000 rpm and under without tractoring or chugging. I miss it actually. The stock forks are way to soft though, for an adult man.

  • @GB-fo2ce

    I have the 2019 with the upgraded brakes and I totally love the bike. I am not a high level rider but find the throttle response just fine. Not exactly sure what the complaints are. I have ridden a bunch of different bikes and dont see the problem at all. I am 6'2" and it fits me well, better than some other bikes in this category. It has been totally reliable so far, and during the winter months when not ridden for a few weeks it starts up as if i had just turned it off minutes ago. Couldn't be happier. I think most people would love this bike. My two cents.

    That clutch lever thing kind of limits you on things like aftermarket levers. For instance if you want to run a RSC (basically the sickest clutch and perch set up out there) you have to bypass the clutch switch. If the computer always thinks the clutch is pulled in then it's going to screw with the fueling.

    Nothing but great memories of my '07 SV650. What a great motor. I rode with a guy who had a '99 that could give the racers quite a workout on one in the canyons, not to mention wheelie effortlessly, hanging way back nearly vertical. Not bad for a 300lb dude on a 650. I moved on to a '14 Versys 650 which I can't Imagine ever parting with.

    This is a great overall first review, sum up of the bike. I think they touched all the important notes, this SV is indeed still a good all around bike for what it is, just more refined from the original. Ive owned an 05 naked for a little over 3 years, still my first bike, and I'm still in love with it. Do I WANT a newer/more powerful/top quality suspension street bike.... Yes... but that doesn't change the fact that the good ol often underrated sv650 is a great performer even in Stock form. it will still have its unique character, sound, look, an fun little vtwin. Bike still has a lot going for it, though I do feel most in the market for one would buy used since they are so affordable, as this new model will also be in years to come.
    Excellent suggestion to suzuki to bring out an S model with updated suspension and brakes. Other manufacturers are already releasing track/performance oriented versions of certain models, Suzuki should jump on board with that.

      Not to knock the other online bike journos, a lot of whom started out in print, but they could certainly learn a thing or two from Revzilla on video production. Motorcycle.com has upped their game a little, employing some drone shots and the like, but Revzilla's really got it down.

    I want a comparison with the fz-07 soooo bad! I'm torn on which one to get, and though I know the SV is a bit pricier, it does offer ABS and has better fueling stock (it's almost mandatory to do an ECU flash on the FZ). They both seem to suffer from lackluster brakes and suspension, but the SV has a history of mods for this that can hopefully transcend into this generation. The FZ has ( in my opinion) a nicer overall style, clean lines, and a butt-load of streetfigher mod-ready attitude...even if the parts are a bit cheaper...please do a comparison, revzilla...you're my only hope.

    I was looking for a fuel injected SV as a first bike when I found a local dealer selling a used Aprilia Shiver, which is also a 90° V-twin but with more premium components than the SVs came with in their original run, as well as more power. They haven't changed much since launch but they're also very solid and not much more expensive new than this is now that it's back. Aftermarket parts aren't going to be nearly as cheap, though, so that is something to consider.

    • @oLittleBear

      The Shiver is an all around better bike. But you won't find one as cheap as an SV on average.

    The biggest thing that bugs me about all bike reviews is they all feel rushed. Partly in production value and quality but mostly in feel. The speaker spews words like he's an auctioneer, the cuts are quick and robotic. We the viewers can't get a chance to relax, to drink in the bike's looks and sounds, and to be spoken with on a more intimate level about something they're interested. It's nice to feel like the review is a pleasant conversation, with passion for the topic at hand, rather than a half-interested podium jockey listing off talking points as quickly as he can. The viewer should be able to breathe without feeling the atmosphere around the screen he's watching is dominated by the person in the video.
    Chris Harris and his splendid automotive reviews are a shining example of how reviews should be, and I sincerely hope someone in the motorcycle world learns this and gives the viewers quality, engaging content.

    What is often forgotten in reviews of the SV650, is that compared to the previous generations (2003-2009), the new model's seat is very thin and much harder, the foot
    pegs are not rubberized (more vibration felt at high RPMs), the fuel tank has
    2.5 l/0.7 gal less capacity, the engine has less power and torque (3.4 hp &
    3 lb ft at rear wheel) and the seat height is lower by 0.6 in/ 1.5 cm. The only
    thing I prefer about the new model is the nice trellis frame and the black
    painted engine parts. In all other aspects the older models are more capable
    for me. So I'd go for a well maintained 2nd generation SV650 before a new one.
    These engines make 100k miles easily with regular oil changes, so mileage is
    not an issue. But hey, I own a 2006 model, so I'm biased.

    I recently got back on a bike after a LONG time off. Did some research for a couple of years actually and decided on a SV650S. I got a 2000 model. I'm no beginner but I'm not advanced one and have no desire to be either but this (and it's not really a 'little') bike is a gem. It is indeed nimble and quick enough for me. I dont ride like a lunatic if you want to do that do it on a track and choose from ALL the other bikes that will do what you want. Personally I'd recommend this bike to anybody. The VAST majority of us dont know what to look for when we are riding a bike, you know all the little things that reviewers and pros know about? We just want to ride, be comfortable and happy. This bike will fill that niche. Enjoy, dont be a dick on the road and stay safe.

    Had the original SV loved it however weak breaks and suspension are 1st to address if any serious riding done.I dont expect a lot from budget price of the bike but consider that replacing suspension breaks maybe exhaust pushes the ownership lot higher in which case other bikes become more attractive.

  • @burns0100
    @burns0100 6 років тому

    Was looking at getting a Honda CBF500 now I'm jumping over to wanting the Suzuki SV650. Same price, huge difference in Bike. The SV650 fits me really well, mirrors are actually 100% rear view, no shoulder or elbow, knees tuck right into the tank, seat fits me big butt and I can comfortably put a foot down flat.
    I think the only thing I would do is install a Wind Shield and Tail Box and that would tick off my needs. Highway Riding and Light Travel. It sounds decent out the gate and all the easy stuff like Mirrors, Indicators, Seat, Tires and Grips are actually really decent stock.
    Just the question of do I need ABS, been riding 4 years now on a 150 without any assists so I'm wondering if ill need the ABS. Probably my only concern is the increase in power might get me in trouble if I'm not careful and having ABS would reduce that risk.

The suspension seemed a bit more thought out and the engine seemed a bit more lively than the 'Zuk. However, I fit on the Suzuki more comfortably in the stock form. I know that isn't the comparison you were looking for, but perhaps it'll offer you some additional insight into my warped mind."_ Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

    How does the new SV650 compare to the Ducati Scrambler in terms of performance, handling, and utility (the Suzuki would obviously be expected to be more reliable and cheaper to maintain)?
    I realize it's not an entirely apples-to-apples comparison, since the SV650 is sportier and strictly street-oriented. I think it's a worthwhile compare-and-contrast, though, since they both seemed aimed at being fun, versatile middleweight bikes suitable for newer riders.

    Not sure about the US market but here in Canada, the SV650 comes with ABS in all colors which are black, white, red, and blue. I know because I bought a white one with ABS. Also I doubt a GSXR fork can bolt in like the old SV since this new one is completely different

      You’re getting ads for root insurance because you used to be a customer n they want you back
      UA-cam tailors the ads to the viewer so the rest of us are seeing different ads depending on search history, social media usage, surveys UA-cam asks you to fill out, region, etc etc
      Difficult to guess that percentage of people will see the same ad as you but I’d put money on it being >10%

    Looks like a proper motorcycle, good to see the Japanese making modernized UJMs once again. That being said, I don't understand why the US market so often gets the short end of the stick and doesn't get the same ABS models that the rest of the world does. If you're going to use it for track, you're either going to defeat the ABS or remove it altogether, (along with a lot of other stuff) for weight savings.
    Seeing how this is primarily a street bike, having ABS pays for itself in insurance premiums alone for the first or second year of ownership. I know the keyboard commands like to pretend they've got a better line than Rossi in the corner and have immaculate brake control bestowed by a thousand angles dancing on the end of their brake lever, but the open road is more...well, unpredictable.

      If this is your first bike, choose neither. Start with a used 250-300cc class bike for at least a year. Then see if you can test ride the R6 or ZX6R to see which you prefer. If you've already been riding for a couple years, then again, go and see if you can test ride both bikes. -DrewZilla

    Can those tank stripes be removed? Hope so. I really like this guy's reviews...there is a follow-up to this review worth watching. Last...that is a fat, ugly muffler. I see they are trying to disguise it somewhat with the two tone color...but still pretty darn ugly, especially when coupled with all the other snaky piping under the frame. Somehow Yamaha managed to clean things up quite a bit with the FZ07.

  • @stormbytes
    @stormbytes 6 років тому +6

    I found this review disappointing, falling short of the thorough and logically presented reviews that I've come to expect from Revzilla. This was basically a contrast-and-compare with previous models, the Gladius, the FZ07, with only minimal presentation offered on the SV650 itself. There's no mention of comfort, seat height or rider height, target rider and just a passing mention of suspension. As someone who may be interested in the SV650 this video amount to little more than some cool riding footage.

    Is this new SV tuned for lower octane fuel (87) like the old ones? The FZ 07 is and that's honestly one of the things that makes it so attractive. I'm torn between the two so fueling could be the deal breaker.

      +Mark Brandon here in Georgia there's a 20 cent difference between regular and premium. When you're a distance commuter it makes a difference. I also said in the OP that I'm torn between the two so nitpicky factors will probably make the decision for me.

      Yep, a brand new SV with a front-end as good as a supersport? for the street, I don't want or need anything more powerful than that. We're all throwing money at the screen, hear us Suzuki!

      Both bikes suspension is dick. So take your pick.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 7 років тому +2

      From what I've been able to tell, they say the stock condition of the SV is slightly more stable and less mushy than the FZ. But yes, both bikes will need work in this department. So far the FZ has more aftermarket upgrade kits out. Such as Andreani full-cartridge drop ins for the forks, converting from damper rod to cartridge.
      SV will more than likely take Gold Valve emulators and springs, possibly better damper rod drop ins.
      Both will take high-end rear shocks.
      Personally I think they are inexpensive enough to treat as a canvass. Make them what you want them to be. I think they both would run circles around big heavy bikes with professional suspension work. It's a nice level of power, about 72-75 hp and 400-420 pounds. Also 55+ mpg.
      Both will sounds good enough to love for years, with lots of exhaust options. So far Arrow is the only one making head pipes for the new SV.

    If I was buying a brand new bike, I would not be wanting to modify it too sort its short comings out. I would just buy a better bike, that is good straight out of the box.

    • @blackblaze1996
      @blackblaze1996 5 років тому

      The thing is though... no bike is perfect. You will pretty much always have something you want to mess around with. It depends on how YOU use it. You are buying a mass produced bike no matter what you buy. It's obviously not going to be tailored to specifically what you need. And add to that that somehow manufacturers always, and I do mean always, oversee some easy to fix problem. Even legendary bikes usually have some small stupid thing that gets changed out by everyone.
