Charlie wasn't staring him down and this was a more respectful battle of fun than anything else. Charlie is a respectful host but Dave, also respectful, decided to just follow Benante's lead. These are the best kind of drum-duets because it's not about out-doing the other drummer. It's about seeing if you can quickly build up something truly incredible with genuine chemistry. My 2 cents on this anyway.

@@murk4552 "Skank Hammer Blast"? I've listened to Metal since the '80's and never heard of that...
Also, it's hardly part of his style- it's not as if he uses it all the time.
I'm merely saying that I seen an interview where he actually said he was the first to use a "Blast Beat". Which of course, he simply isn't.
No idea why you're mentioning Punk bands though...
Regardless, Charlie's still one of my favourite drummers and one of the best in Metal.

Gar was a "Praying Mantis" behind the drums. Dude had such a swagger to his playing. It looked as if he was hardly moving when they played live. He played some of the fastest jazz/metal beats ever laid to vinyl!!! Any one that questions that, should have a listen to Killing is my Business, or Peace Sells. Gar had such a finesse and blended his playing in so well, sometimes you would lose him in the surrounding rhythms. His timing with the other instruments was that good. That's a jazz drummer for ya though! LoL R.I.P. Gar.
