Attempting suicide is illegal in Singapore. You can get a year’s jail, or fine, based on section 309 of the Penalty Code. Which they don't usually carry out. However this it is only enforced against those who repeatedly attempt to commit suicide. This is because the courts have the power to get these people to seek treatment, via a mandatory treatment order. So they will do what it take to ensure you are going for treatments

Malaysian here. My mum has a very interesting take on the chewing gum ban. It was banned not because of being a public nuisance, but for being a subtle form of protest. As the Singaporean people felt that they couldn't publicly oppose the ruling party, they left chewing gum everywhere in public. The government knew about this, and that is why chewing gum is banned.
Unfortunately that story belongs with the other conspiracy theories. Back in the days of LKY, there was no need for subtlety. He’d just tell you to “Stop it!”, round up any others who persist and ban chewing gum. Chewing gum was just a huge nuisance. The cost of removing it from the pavements, street lamps, etc was very high and deemed unnecessary. Then there was the wad of gum on the MRT door which caused the doors not to close properly, shutting down the train system since that train couldn’t move off. The decision was then to ban gum. Sure, the people weren’t too happy (that ban plus being compared by LKY to cows chewing cud - he really wasn’t one to be subtle) but it was a minor thing in the grand scheme of things. You could still chew but selling and importing was a no-no.
