Apart from the late Mr Lee Kwan Yew, the other important and brilliant greats were, the late Dr Goh Keng Swee and Richard Hu to name a few. And Singapore is lucky to have another proven and brilliant great in the same bracket/calibre, Mr Tharman Shamugaratnam.
Unfortunately, their era has passed. LKY, Goh Keng Swee, Goh Chok Tong, they were all great if a little controversial. Today's PAP has left a lot to be desired
One of the secrets which many dunno that made Singapore rich is that because of the "divorce" with Malaysia in 1965 after gaining merger in 1963 , the young island nation was "gifted" by Malaysia a cheap water agreement from Johore (for 99 years till 2061) which is priced at just 3 sens (1 Singapore cent) per 1000 gallons for 99 years. Plus Singapore is entitled 250'000 gallons of water each day from Johor hence many times the Malaysian state faces lack of water due to the increasing population in Johor state during drought times and had to buy from Singapore at a much higher price. Mahathir as PM-4 had the chance to review the water price in 1987-88 but he chose not to do so as it does NOT benefit him or his cronies but it was a great loss to the country itself.

Singaporeans care about results, and they want an efficient government. Many people in the world only care about the process. What they want is one person, one vote. It doesn't matter how inefficient the elected government is. China and Singapore have similar successes.
I lived in Singapore. The unmentioned factor is that everyone works hard. They have had an unbelievable work ethic. The pioneer generation were given a good opportunity by an intelligent government, but they worked hard to improve themselves. Another unmentioned thing is the significant economic pressure on working families. They are required to look after their parents and want to educate their children. These are two very expensive things to do.
@Spring By charging more. How? You might ask. What used to be probably below 10x cheaper decades ago is now very expensive for most citizens. 2 room HDB flats nowadays cost you around $200k to $300k depending on the location. 3/4 rooms probably around the 300k to 400k++ range. 5 rooms now cost about 500k and above range. Let's not forget that these are government housing not private ones. Wish to get a vehicle? Good luck paying 10x more compared to other countries and to top it off we have this thing called COE which is basically the rights to drive that vehicle for 10 years only. Which we have to pay every 10 years and it's getting more expensive by the year.
@@XenonKirito You’re quoting the prices of resale old flats. So clearly you are not a Singaporean. It’s been decades HDB had stopped building 2 or 3 room flats. New flats bought from HDB are relatively cheap for Singaporeans and many citizens can afford to own a home in Singapore .
Greetings from Singapore, and thanks for this. Checking out the rest of your videos and subscribing! Overall, a great job. Just a few minor points. LKY was truly one singular genius. He also picked a great team around him, people who don't get the credit they deserve, such as Goh Keng Swee and S Rajaratnam. In a part of the world rife with ethnic and religious tensions, the vision was to make a place where these do not exist. I, for example, live in a neighborhood where a Sikh temple, a Buddhist temple, a Catholic church and a Protestant church are all a stone's throw from each other - and no one has ever thrown stones, not least since the 1960s. The PAP can indeed take credit for any things, I would say their guiding philosophy is I don't care who has come up with a great idea or a solution, whether right or left, democratic or communist, I will study it and adapt it for our own needs. In the process, we have developed solutions that are truly our own, you mentioned housing and the CPF. Lastly, our leaders in government and in business know full well we have no resources to fall back on, no domestic market. We either succeed on the international stage, or we lose our independence. Keep up the good work and may 2021 be a great year for you!

That requires civilians who trust the government implicitly, and also requires the civil service's absolute loyalty for the betterment of the country instead of wanting benefits for themselves fighting over power. All this requires luck honestly beyond governance. For singapore is small, rightly positioned geopolitically no other nation could replicate that. Thanks for doing this video. Found it most interesting. The people of Singapore are able to recognize caring and wonderful leaders and we voted for Forefather Lee Kuan Yew and his party again and again. This meant that the government could strategize and implement many long-term projects in education, infrastructure, economy, etc. In Singapore, we believe that if the country is blessed with a good leader, we should continue to follow him. I'm especially impressed at how you've explained the root causes for Singapore's inequality, low birth rates, and our dependence on migrant labour. These critical flaws are, to a large extent, a product of our own success. And yes, on both ends, bad and good, it's got something to do with the way the country has been governed to date.

Singaporean here. Excellent video! You know more than most Singaporeans. Here's another nugget: you mentioned the two wealth funds (Temasek and GIC), but there is a third, which is the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The value of Temasek and MAS portfolios are public but GIS is secret, as we don't want external parties (eg. Soros) to speculate against our currency / economy and cause disruption (like the previous financial crisis).
MAS is the central bank, not a wealth fund. MAS holds funds to manage the value of its currency, to stimulate the economy, or to prevent inflation. A sovereign wealth fund just wants to earn a high return. Every country has their own central bank, like the Federal Reserve in the USA or the People's Bank of China in China, so it's not really worth mentioning.

The success of Singapore is foremost a study of nation building. Upon being expelled from Malaysia, it does not have police and armed forces, currency, even water needs to be imported and it had millions of mouths to feed. Everything becomes a matter of survival. Lee Kwan Yew's quote - "There is no free lunch", becomes the pragmatic approach in its governance principles. Singapore knows that if it does run, it will fall back. Without endowment of rich natural resources, it cannot expect timely rescue effort from other countries. Hence, it's a relentless drive to keep ahead - to survive and if fortunate enough, to thrive. Singapore's no-nonsense, disciplined government policies are all carefully designed to ensure survival, most of all. It's just that it is so well planned and administered that it actually becomes 'successful'. Remember, there is no free lunch, nothing is guaranteed and nothing comes for free - one needs to work really hard for things one wants.

The fact of the matter is that contemporary germans would not put up with the authoritarianism and democracy deficit of the Singaporean regime.

Yes, Singapore success is mainly due to good governance. Though COVID hit the world hard, surprisingly more companies want to come to Singapore.
Its a good thing covid was handled much earlier compared to other countries
Not only the companies, now people from other 'developed countries' are moving or eyeing Singapore. This Covid has exposed a lot of things we didn't know or told otherwise, such as crumbling third world healthcare system in the US, and its governance on pandemic and viruses. It has limits!

Quite many say * work like dogs/ slave city,,,, to work and work*

Singapore's growth over these decades was so IMPRESSIVE! I think many countries should consider implementing its main policies.
As a singaporean, non of singapore's policies could be in place beyond our lands. it is impossible to be implemented. Beyond political will requires a strong military and a strong military requires funding in which singapore was blessed to have early on in the day when we inherited all the important water ways from british rule and remaining as the worlds most important sea routes under our care. Non of this could be replicated it has been tried and failed. The education level and competitiveness is yet another metric no other country could catch up not even america or china for the matter of fact and thats something interesting as a singaporean.

GIS mentioning in combination with Soros...very meaningful :-)...greetings from a foreigner living in SG...

Lot to learn from Singapore and Japan.
Japan is not a nation but semi-colonized by the U.S. since WW2. Japan does not have sovereignty & control over her destiny since her constitution was written by Americans.
@@SingSongTalkCock at least it's better than her jeopardizing my country in WW2
Citizens are greatful and patient with their leaders

Amazing, it looks like they're doing everything right. India could learn a lot from them. Would love to visit someday
Yes. I was born in 1956. We did not have modern sanitation then.
We lived in village called Kampongs.

While this video reiterates the often-told idea that “Singapore has virtually nothing in the way of natural resources,” it could be reasonably argued that its strategic location and its natural deepwater harbor _are,_ in fact, natural resources.
How many cities, states have the same strategic location? Sri Lanka, any of the coastal cities in India, any of the coastal cities in Indonesia, Philippines, Malacca, Penang, ad nauseum
I hear all the time about how Singapore is easier to manage because it’s a small city-state. I don’t doubt that there’s some truth to that. However, I haven’t really seen another city, as a city, as well run as SG, with all the facilities & amenities that SG offers, as conveniently as SG offers them…
Excellent video with great synopsis of Singapore's success.
Love Singapore story and wish its model could be used by our country to change the lives of the south Africans. Wish to visit one day. Great story.
Arent they already trying that with the farm fields? Attacking and murder white people farmer?
Meanwhile zimbabwe try doing the opposite (after years of failure)
Nationalization usually fail if perform by incompetent and corrupt government
@SN4 Singapore succeeded with nationalisation in manufacturing/service not in agriculture.
Singapore is love
those beautiful panoramic shots tho.
Great video. I love how your topcis are less mainstream.
I like it!Hard work and Economic strategic plan
Jackie > There's a saying, " It takes a drop to sink a Ship ". But on the contrary, it only takes a Genius like Lee Kuan Yew to turn a desert to an Oasis which is Singapore.Congratulations to Lee Kuan Yew from a former ex- patrait.
新加坡有明智的领袖,实用主义和高效率
Singapore should salute you for your video. Impartial. Factual. Telling on its shortcomings.
I'm Singapore Proud🇸🇬 and my homeland with family and friends in this tiny reddot ❤️🤗. We stay strong and healthy.
I love Singapore from India
What is not mentioned in the video is how the level of corruption in Singapore is very low, especially compared to its neighbouring countries. That has helped to boost confidence, especially in FDI. (IMO)
Great analysis. Hope my native country Ethiopia will reach to these kind of success one day despite the current situation she’s in
What's wrong with Ethiopia dear?
When it comes to investing, we want our money to grow with the highest rates of return, and the lowest risk possible. While there are no shortcuts to getting rich, but there are smart ways to go about it.
You are right, to be a successful person in life require him or her of hard work and time
You are right. Been thinking of going into gold and cyptocurrency
@Russell Kerrick I totally agree with you it has been an eye-opening experience for a lot of people.
She have changed my life and financial status for the best. All thanks to my aunty who introduced me to her.
She is obviously the best, trading with her gives me joy of earning
My first Investment with her gave me profits of over $27K U.S dollar and she does not fail
Uf lee kuan yew is a businese man. He will be our world number one riches man. He is a great man. And sg is lucky to has him lead us.....we thank this great man. He is larger than life......
It is also regularly ranked as one of the most free economies in the world.
Efficient governance and mostly honest hardworking Singaporean’s
Singapore is what you'd call a benevolent dictatorship. Whether it's a good thing or not is up to everyone's opinion, but the stability that arose from such conditions makes Singapore an ideal place for businesses and multinational corporations. It's kind of a PRC-USA fusion in which you try to take the best of both worlds and merge them into one. You have some basic freedoms but sacrifice others at the expense of stability and safety.
Honestly I’d prefer a benevolent dictatorship over a malevolent democracy *looks at India*
Extremely Nice video and beautiful cities, vacations and going on tours seems to be a kind of relaxation to me,I find meeting new people from different race as fun and educating, each year I find out time to travel to at least 3 countries I have never been to,nevertheless comfort or would I say living the way I do is too expensive,as long as you can afford it,it’s fun
In my own humble opinion I think you stated fact here and I love the last sentence you made, traveling anytime you like is expensive to me,you must have a good paying job if not how you meet up to these expenses
@@galipomer3362 Of course, not now. You should wait a little more when the world gets it feet back on the ground. What I mean, until the Airports sort out it manpower and budget airlines could fly the sky again. With proper planning, you can travel on a string
I have worked and lived in many economically advanced cities and admittedly Singapore has been more successful than most in various ways - clean , safe, extremely well connected regionally and globally and a digitally savvy government services . However, the major setback is it’s humid weather 😢
The success of Singapore is its food!! Delicious food from the hawker stalls. Curry puffs, nasi goreng, martabak, yum!!
Singapore political leaders are making many right decisions since independence from British Empire, led to its present prosperity and wealthy status among many developing countries. 🤔
Wonderful! How i wish my country, Nigeria could learn from the great Singapore's experience. I adore late sage Lee Kuan Hew. Thanks for this production. Ehi Ighile.
Your videos are amazing 😍
Thanks Nangsan! We hope you enjoyed it 👍
I'm impressed with Singapore's history and how they became so rich after gaining independence.
excellent overview
Honestly, it’s mainly due to competent politicians who work within reality. A lot of their policies are nothing less than authoritarian, but it ultimately works.
Do next for Malaysia and Kazakhstan ✌️✌️
Thanks for the comment. 2021 video planning is underway 👍
The world's perfect economy.
No, it is nt. Have you seen your national debt?
What about Singapore's national debt? I only know Singapore has 0 net debt, and that's why she consistently gets AAA credit ratings from the likes of Moody's, Standard and Poor's and Fitch.😂
Thank you for your video!
This is the first video I've watched from your channel and excited to check out the rest of your content.

@Mighty Fruit Yet they still get treated quite fairly than how Malaysia treated Chinese and Indian
Other very important factors Lee Kuan Yew strictly enforced is NO CORRUPTION and Good Education System with English as working Language to attract global investment to set up business here.
Are you implying the world should adopt the same national pledge? 😂
Many fail to realize that Lee Kwan Yew and his brilliant team were richly inspired by the principles enunciated in the Holy Bible which has been the sustaining bedrock of this amazing nation.
Education, Culture and hard work
By hard work you mean being money laundry mecca for asia
I Miss you so much Singapore i want to travel there again once more ..
