Demon's Crest, known in Japan as Demon's Blazon, is a side-scrolling platform video game developed and published by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the third video game starring Firebrand, following Gargoyle's Quest and Gargoyle's Quest II.
#gaming #retro
ya'll have come through in SPADES with the game suggestions. thank you for watching and keep them coming. i read them all!!
Did you ever do New Super Mario Bros Wii U?
Mystical Ninja would be a great one to see for SNES
Play more of this one, it's so good.
Keep playing Demon's Crest!!
Please play speedball 2 on thé megadrive ❤❤
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen was a pretty amazing game if you've never played. Might be hard to get videos out of it your first run though, but that took as many hours out of my childhood as the original FF2 USA cartridge I farmed 2 Medusa blades, a pink tail, dragon whip, 2 glass helms on. 😲
Edit: twice you referenced the ghosts n goblins franchise, super ghouls n ghosts was meant as the sequel to ghosts n goblins, this one is a sequel to Goblins Quest on NES, which admittedly was meant to be a spin-off, in as much as firebrand was retroactively named and is meant to be that one red guy in ghosts n goblins, and this is kind of his story.
This makes me miss Debunking the Difficulty so much
Seriously!
I clicked so fast hoping that maybe that's what this was 😂
I mean, realistically this game would never make that list. Demon's Crest is fairly easy safe for maybe a couple bossrs later on.
i love you trav!
The first gargoyle you got allow you to dash to some obstacles to move them. As examples, the kind of fire statues you passed by after the town. I loved that game so much back in the day.
This game is one of the best on the SNES library. Four endings, lots of stuff for the collector in you, awesome soundtrack, amazing backgrounds and art, and the gameplay is on point. There is a lot to love, and it can be finished in a reasonable timeframe.
For a SNES game, it looks way ahead of its time. If the graphics were a little better, it could easily be a modern game.
@@neil2444 Reminds me of Valkyrie profile for ps1. This enemy I think is the boss from the knight that throws spears I think.
1. To use inventory items you must select inventory items. Including the gargoyle form, potions in bottles and spells on vellum (paper).
2. There aren’t really I frames, at least for many bosses. One of the riskiest but biggest tricks for some bosses is to spam breath attacks.
3. There generally can only be one fireball on the screen at one time but once it vanishes, you can make another one. A strong tactic is to get close to an enemy and hit the attack button as fast as you can, though that also makes you a sitting duck.
4. You can head butt windows.
You can also charge bash the fountains and other things.
Bosses also have mostly logical weaknesses. Stone bosses versus rock smashing breath, water and ice bosses vs your basic ice and fire breath.
Thanks for telling him. I was frustrated seeing him not doing so many things he could have discover in this play through. This is a great game.
Games you must play: Super Smash TV, Metal Warriors, Cybernator, Phalanx, Rocket Knight Adventures. To name a few. Much love Ryu!
Cybernator got a much improved update on PC and Switch.... Assault Suits Valkan 😎👍
Super Smash TV!!!!!
I'd love to see him play Rocket Knight Adventures, so I can finally see what's after the duelling mech boss.
Super Smash TV and Metal Warriors were my childhood. I definitely have to make a rock cover of these games
Cybernator! that brings back a lot of memories
For SNES recommendations, you've gotta play Actraiser 2 if you're looking for an insanely difficult game and Actraiser 1 if you're looking for a city builder/action game hybrid and both are insanely addicting. EVO: Search for Eden is also really cool. You start as a primordial fish creature and collect body parts by eating other monsters. Eventually, your actions dictate your next evolution until eventually you turn into a caveman. It's a little grindy, but still really cool.
Actraiser Renaissance is amazing. They added tons of story and new gameplay elements. It feels more like a sequel than the sequel did lol
"what's prohibiting me from flying all the time" I hear while I watch ryu miss the vellum down there in the stage
Lol yes.
lol ... read this mins before he runs into guy in town asking for it; also Im researching in background what vellum is 😂
my new will! Vellum will! 😂🎉❤
Oh, man, this is easily one of the best games on SNES. Fantastic stuff.
If you like this, you should try the other Gargoyle's Quest games - this is basically GQ3.
GQ1 is still the best of the 3 imo, but Demon’s Crest is the SOTN equivalent to the series.
it's funny it has such terrible reviews though
@@ausgamecollector Definitely. I like to call it a proto-SotN. And it's probably no coincidence that SotN is my second-favorite game of all time (just behind Chrono Trigger) and I happen to love Demon's Crest as well.
GQ1 is a fantastic game as well, and it's astounding how much atmosphere they manage to pump out of a Game Boy game. The amazing soundtrack goes a long way in that regard. GQ2 is the weakest of the bunch, but still well worth playing.
@@vel2118 Really? I know there are a few folks that don't like it, but I generally see praise for it these days.
Your control of the character for it being a new game to you is crazy good. This is an awesome game. I really like the actraiser games. If you like shoot em ups then maybe axelay for plane style and cybernator for more of a Metroid style.
So I know Ryukahr has already played Super Castlevania IV, but I highly recommend he plays *Castlevania: Bloodlines* on the Genesis! It is also a classic that I think he might enjoy!
Sotn is up there too
@@davidwatkins8474
> up there
He says as though it's not considered the best castlevania
@@davidwatkins8474I remember when Ryu finally collected the Crissagrim sword in the upside down castle. If he plays this game again with the same save file, he should collect 2 Rings of Varda to see how strong this sword can get.
Bloodlines was my favorite Castlevania growing up.
Bloodlines is the best classic Castlevania game. Or at least it's equal to Rondo of Blood although for different reasons. Its so fast paced and feels amazing to play.
I don't consider Super Castlevania IV to be a classic Castlevania game, because it plays very differently. It's basically its own series, a 1-game series that never got a sequel. Super Castlevania is to classic Castlevania as Mega Man X is to Mega Man, basically. And the metroid style castlevanias are also a separate series obviously.
But yeah Bloodlines is absolutely a classic Castlevania game, it's that NES style gameplay taken to its logical conclusion. It just feels so great. I always thought Super Castlevania IV felt very slow and sluggish but Bloodlines absolutely doesn't, the gamefeel is on point.
Rondo of Blood is mainly amazing for just how big it is, so if you ever fall down a bottomless pit you don't die, you end up in a brand new level and keep going from there so it's got like 10 different routes through the game. It's really bloody difficult though, or you could say it's really rondo of bloody difficult.
Demon's Crest is one of the biggest hidden gems in the SNES, a blast to play. I had a great time seeing you discovering it (and knowing all the noob mistakes you did xD). Will love it if you continue playing it!
Great game, I don’t know about hidden gem though… it’s a Capcom title and a spin off of one of the most popular games for the SNES.
We really had no idea how good we had it in the late 80’s & early 90’s. Best game era hands down.
I really enjoy static backgrounds. You can put so much detail in it. Completely gone now days
Actually, we DID. 😂
Terranigma, I'm begging you Ryu!
Lil long, but yeah!
ฅ(๑*▽*๑)ฅ!!
@@andiewand9452 True, but that game is a great experience with nice story and music 😉
What's Terraligma?
@@xSilentZeroXx An epic action RPG for the SNES, third game in the "Soul Blazer Trilogy". Looks, sounds, and plays beautifully.
he needs to play the first two still
One of my favorites. So many secrets. Great music. Alternative endings.
A LOT of endings for a platformer.
"blackthorne" and "flashback",
Amazing games.
I didn't expect to read the name Blackthorne ever again somewhere. Big like!❤
Yesss
Blackthorne is best on PC, the SNES version is censored
Out Of This World blew my mind when it first came out way back when.
@@AtaeHone I played it on the Gameboy Advance and there also was no censoring if you ask me XD
Would love a full playthrough of this. One of my favorites as a kid!
4:47 I was waiting for that realization to happen :D This game is actually the 3rd game in the Gargoyle's Quest series on gameboy and NES. For those familiar with that series, flying was a big part of it, but your flight was limited and was something that you "power up" as you go. So having it be infinite in this game was really cool. Plus later transformations make it so you can freely fly up and down too. Such a good game...
I would LOVE to see a full playthrough of Conker’s Bad Fur Day (N64) from you, Ryu! 🐿️
Wait there's a gargoyle's quest that I never played?! Well now I know what my weekend holds
it's this, actually its own series, with NES and GameBoy games. You nailed it.
Omg If I could forget the absurd amount of hours I put in this game and have a weekend to do it all again ❤
Such a classic!
Secret of Mana
So good! Beat it twice back in the day and then again a few years ago with my son.
I would love to see more of this game!
FYI: this game is a squeal to the Gargoyle Quest games on NES and Gameboy. Gargoyle's Quest 2 on NES was one of my favorite NES platformer games!
Yeah but the SNES entry really nailed that atmosphere. The music is sick and blows out all of the G&G games.
This game is essentially Gargoyle's Quest 3. The reason why Capcom choose not to call this Gargoyle's Quest like the first two was so to not confuse gamer with the Sega Genesis Disney game called Gargoyles.
My all time fav game when I was a kid was Illusion of Gaia (illusion of time) on the SNES. Wish it was on the nintendo online subscription.
It’s free through the SNES games on the Switch.
Oh God, yes. I see why Enix and Squaresoft merged.
You can play it for free using an emulator on your phone or computer.
Illusion of gaia is actually part of a series.
I would like to see Ryukahr complete Blaster Master and Shadow of the Ninja for NES. Two amazing games that don't get enough love
Blaster master was awesome
Demon's Crest was that dream come true. To actually be able to use one of the villains of a game in its full glory. I didn't know of this game until I had to make a guitar cover for Halloween and came across "Memorial of the Fallen Ones" from Demon's Crest. Then I realized that this beautiful gem of a game existed. Definitely a hidden gem of a game
Thank you for all the retro gaming! I lack the energy to go back to all my old favorites but thankfully watching you play them recaptures the joy.
PLAY THE MESSENGER! It's an updated Ninja Gaiden homage. Amazing music, super funny, amazing mechanics and perfectly challenging.
This would be absolutely amazing
I was looking at playing Cyber Shadow too... which is like Ninja Gaiden NES
i was the whole time like " For the love of God , try to jump again on air"
11:46 TRANSFORRRRM!
He does this with so many games he just completely misses an important mechanic and makes no mention of it ever. I think there’s something wrong with him lol
x2
He's a Mario player. There are no air jumps normally so he clearly isn't used to such a mechanic.😅
@@silenthell666 and Mario Wonder? (former WR Ryu)... LOL
for me this only shows that Ryu doesn't prepare in advance, he just starts with a game completely blinded with no preparation, and streams it.... how many youtubers do you know that does this??.... my respects... 🙌🙌
I can't believe Capcom never made more of this
I love that this game is getting all this much deserved recognition. One of those games they have multiple ending, secrets to be uncovered, decent challenge. This is a MUST HAVE if anyone ever has the chance to get it original OR digitally.
Rainbow Islands (NES), Super Bonk (SNES), and Illusion of Gaia (SNES). There were "true endings" for Rainbow Islands and Illusion of Gaia.. I managed to do true ending for Rainbow Islands, but I never managed to do true ending for Illusion of Gaia. Great games, but they're pretty obscure.
There's a true ending for illusion?? Or do you mean the bonus ruby level?
That face when watching you play a game from my youth and you don't realize that on the menu you have to press Y to activate or deactivate crests etc.....
As soon as I commented he figured it out lol "Whattttt , HE CAN FLY!!"
Would love to see some more Lufia gameplay
GOTTA PLAY GARGOYLES QUEST I & II
2:11 More out of context Ryu! 🤣
Filthy comment 🤦♂️
Jealous you beat me to it 😏
This was always in the rotation at Grandpa's. Damn, those were good days.
this was one of my favorite games growing up. i was super stoked when they added it to nintendo online library
Beat the secret final boss, the Dark Demon!
I was never able to beat that guy. Gave up and never came back to it. Could probably do it now if I tried again.
Legend of Zelda II maybe? 4 years ago you played it to return Extraordinarily Hard Games from 2 years prior. So it's been a minute and we haven't seen the end :D
He never finishes anything 😂
He probably finished it on stream, and never uploaded it on UA-cam.
@@Erlewyn he did NOT, only the first 10? EHG he did, he would directly continue with them on stream until he beat said games, for series 2 of that show, he only posted youtube videos, and NEVER played the games again.
I'd love to see you play through "Altered Beast" for Sega Genesis. Kids used to line up for this arcade at our old bowling alley.
I love retro gaming on your channel. Keep doing them it's fun to watch. The platforming is pretty solid in this game, so I'm not surprised that it resonates with you.
I am so grateful you got a chance to experience this game. This is one of my childhood favorites. This was also my 3rd speedrun. It has some of the best graphics on the system and this game oozes atmosphere!
I hope you enjoy the rest of your play through!
Always wanted to see you play the original Rayman. Great game but pretty tough. Right up your alley!
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
He already played that on his other channel
It made me so happy you found this game. There’s so much more to uncover that is in this video so I’d wish you’d finish it. I think you’ll love it. I’d also recommend the messenger like many others in the comments have. Great challenge and fun gameplay.
I'd like to see you try F-Zero 2 Grand Prix for the SNES. It's about the Ace League after the King League. It might be a ROM hack or unreleased, but it's definitely available.
Golden Axe would be fun to see.
This game is actually a sequel to Ghost'n Ghoblins spinoff Gargoyle's Quest for the Game Boy (+ it's sequel on NES, Gargoyle's Quest II).
The NES game is a bit watered down but the Game Boy original I would highly highly recommend, you could pop that into Super Gameboy and it would be absolute delight to watch you play it, it holds well still today and shouldn't take too long to beat!
I was about to say this. I was one of those who got Gargoyles Quest for Gameboy right near its release. (gameboy being my first console I owned, even if it was portable)
This was my favorite game back in 97. I beat it many times and I got all the hidden treasures and demon transformations. I’m glad people still enjoy it to this day
One pretty obscure and difficult game would be Demolition Man on Sega Genesis. A video game based on the movie with Stallone. I found that really hard as a kid but played it a bunch.
I just bought a Raspberry Pi 4 from Amazon and an old 9" screen RCA CRT T.V on eBay it's also portable so I can use it while I go camping setting it up today been wanting to get back into retro games and revisit my childhood, jus taking a break from modern gaming cause nothing beats those classics man that nostalgic feeling you get when the music first kicks in and that old familiar rush that takes you over.. 🎮 awesome video bro!!! 🫡
can we get the true end of DKC2 please
Animal antics...
THAT is hard, I love it!
love when you play retro games
And you have not played yet "Road Runner's Death Valley Rally" for the SNES.... great graphics, have some platform, some puzzle.... would be perfect for you :D :D
That's third game in the series, you should check out previous entries called Gargoyles Quest
Nice thing is you don't have to play the others to enjoy this one.
@@budgetcoinhunter Yeah absolutely, but they're fun in their own right. The concept is definitely most refined in DC, and most polished, but first two are still pretty good.
Space Station Silicon Valley for the N64. You ain't ready
this
Chameleon twist on N64, very unique 3D platformer
This is SO GOOD. Can't wait for additional parts!
This game is definitely good, but I played it for the first time recently and it felt like something was missing. Something I can't quite articulate, so can I really hold it against the game? Probably not. I quite enjoyed the two Gargoyle's Quest games though.
Also - play Super Adventure Island 2.
If you want a real good game, where you explore like metroid. Give "Air Fortress" a try. It's got space fighting like r-type, then dungeon exploration like metroid. Every level is different, but it's very challenging as well.
One of my childhood favorites! I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention it.
@@DoinThatRag it's difficult i tell you that much
More is this, please!
Oh hell yes! Love that retro games are back would love to see more of this for sure. Act Raiser would be a hell of a game to see you do. Boss fights are fun and then a boss gauntlet at the end. Bad part is, it has city building sections that slow things down a bit, but still very fun game to play and figure out the secrets.
Love the retro content man. thank's so much!❤
So Ryu.....I know you may not see this because you are a very busy man.... There is a game that i guarantee you will like for the genesis that most people probably have not played but it is soooo good that anyone would like it if they played it. A hidden gem. The game is called Jewel Master. It also has unparalleled music. You won't regret it if you played it.
Have a good one brother and your content is gold.
There is a neat platformer on Sega switch online called comix zone. It's not the hardest game, but is really creative. It would be fun to see you play it.
I had forgotten this game existed, but I remember loving it.
I am so excited to watch you play this game!! I spent HOURS on this when I was a kid. I love watching a game I know played from a new perspective!! Please, more retro!!
I love the old retro games! Can't wait to see more of your videos every week now.
This is the third game of a trilogy, the first two games being Gargoyles Quest 1&2
I'd really like to see you beat the true final boss. It's one of the most difficult final bosses of the SNES era
Before Castlevania: Symphony of the Night this game perfected gothic horror exploration. If what I hear is to be believed it also fell victim to the 'satanic panic', with many returning the game due to having demons etc. Unlocking the true final boss does require a lot of 100% completion 'side quest BS' though, such as having to beat Level 3 of the Headbutt game.
Would love to see a modern Metroidvania Demon's Crest. Try Super Adventure Island 2 if you want to try more exploration.
I don’t know if I would say this game “perfected” it. It’s a great game and I own it, but I think the exploration can be a little clunky and obtuse.
As a kid, I had a gaming magazine with a guide for this game. I was obsessed with the graphics, gameplay, and story. The first time I got to play it was over 10 years later on the 3ds. What an amazing game though!
I would love to see you do a full play through of this game, looks super cool
This was the first game i ever played on my snes back in the 90's, my mind blew out with the map navigation and getting the ultimate Demon form when collecting all gems, awesome memories, thank you Ryu, really
Please finish the game, PLEASE !!!
So glad you finally played this!!!! One of my FAVORITES OF ALL TIME! Do Contra 3 Alien Wars SNES! Kabuki Quantum Fighter NES! Gunstar Heros SEGA!
I cannot believe you have not played this game. I freaking love this game. There's even a secret final boss if you collect all items and then kill the normal final boss.
All stages have 2 final Boss, one in The normal way and nother with secret way, The unic stages that haver 1 Boss are the First and final stage. Many stages have sub-boss. Change the gargoylebthat you get with the crests, pressing start and select It with Y.
On the world map, you can press like, select or something to change the view to a top down, and it shows you areas you can go. Also, this changes as you progress thru the game, and there are multiple endings depending on when you go for the final level.
This game is so cool. Stoked to watch you play it!
RAYMAN for the PS1
It's a fantastic platformer where your weapon is your disembodied fist you can wind up and punch across the screen
The difficulty ramps up each "area"
Continue playing this game! Show us part 2. Bringing back so many memories! Thank you!
Definitely play through this game there are so many secrets and unlockables it’s amazing
This game looks phenomenal, I'd gladly watch a whole series where you beat it!
Would love to see you keep going through this!
This game blew me away as a kid. The bosses, the music, the transformations. 👌
Duuude yes! My favorite game for 30 years lol the music is amazing. Hopefully you give it a full playthrough. Gets intense!
Cool! I played this for the first time around last Halloween. I recommended it to you shortly after!
Yes! I wanted you to play this game, I couldn't remember the name of it, but as a kid I could never figure this game out. I even rented it several times from blockbuster to try and beat but never could.
So sick. Stoked to see more!
Finally I get to see the game that a bunch of awesome VGM podcasts light to feature. This was a really cool looking game and it does look like a lot of fun. Please continue playing it!
You really might have just shown me the next game i want to play. This looks incredible.
I am so glad to see more people discovering this game. Believe it or not, while this is a more-or-less stand-alone prequel to Ghosts & Goblins/Ghouls & Ghosts, there are actually two other games that star Firebrand here as their playable character. Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy, and a game of the same name on the NES. Oh yeah, the guy in the Dark Town that talks about you reacts differently to your transformed states using the Elemental Crests. Often, he'll give you hints on how to use them.
Try talking to him with the Crest of Time...
The Demon you play absolutely reminded me of the game Gargoyle's Quest (1990) for the GameBoy, what I was playing as a child.
And after a quick research it turns out it is the same Demon (Firebrand).
Hardest last boss I ever fought. For the life of me I can't beat him with SAVE STATES.
Yes, more of this amazing game!! I'm so glad you're playing it!!
Please play more of this! would love a full playthrough
One of my favorite games of that era, really cool to get to see you play and like it so much
Love that you're giving this gem a chance
Loved this game! My brother brought it home to play and take notes when he worked at Nintendo as a GPC.
love this game! one of the few imo genuinely underrated/overlooked gems on the SNES, even though over the years more people have become aware of it.
you gotta get in a metroidvania mindset for this one though, it's not just a straightforward platformer but considerably more complex and interconnected and revisiting stages is basically mandatory, if only because almost all of them have multiple bosses and stage exits with numerous rewards attached. you seem to have figured it out by the end of this vid though ;) .
I gotta say tho, I am genuinely impressed by how well you handled that skeleton boss in the boneyard. As you can probably tell, this guy is a smidge more difficult than other early bosses and is one of the first walls players have to overcome. even when properly prepared, he can take a couple of tries just due to how easily he can get hits in on you due to his large hitbox.
I'd really like to see you play more of this, it's always interesting seeing people come into this genuinely fresh and slowly figuring out how much this game has going on under the hood.
Been waiting for this game for a minute, keep it going man
this game is so fun dude! Im excited to you you play it for the 1st time!!
Love your channel . Keep it up bro❤
