OMG...you're absolutly the BEST after effect master i've seen until now...you're a genuis.. Today was the first time i see your videos...and i past this all morning learning from you...and i learned a loot from every second of your tuto. I just want to thank you soooo much...you're literally a gift from GOD. Keep going...you deserve millions of followers. Thanks you again...MASTER Saludos desde tu alumna de Sevilla España.
Man! This gotta be the most well-used 8 minutes of my life. This tutorial is packed with very useful information. I was ready to give up on the set matte with an image I couldn't rasterize and then at 6:20 you showed the last secret. Thank you so much. Look forward to seeing more of your content.
I've been using after effects for 12 years now and I didn't know about 4:36. Thanks. Set Matte is super useful but SUPER frustrating if you don't understand how it works.
Awesome way of explaining this effect. I always got confused about this. But now I too can explain this to anyone (by sending your video link ;) ) Thanks mate'
I'm enjoying your tuts, Jeff. Thanks so much for the absence of BS and bad music! Usually, I hide & reveal text with a mask. Using a shape layer instead of my usual mask on each text layer looks faster because only one layer of "masking" (the shape layer) is needed, right?
Can you stack more than one on top of each other? I'm trying to figure out how to create an x-ray like effect. Where an object is shown (say a 2D cartoon arm), then a box moves over it and reveals bones. So one Set Matte would mask the arm image and the other would reveal the bones image. I might be going about this all wrong as I'm pretty green in After Effects but my searching landed me here. :)
hello SIr ... i somehow cant find the Source column in my set matte where i can select masks and effects .. can you please help me out ..awaiting reply .. thank you
This has yet to work for me. DOes anyone else have the same problem? I have a shape layer, I have an image, I place "set matte" on image I want, i set take matte from desired shape layer and... nothing happens.
thank you very much!
You're the first one to mention that the layers MUST be rasterized for this to work! Thank you!
To be honest, that was some real tutorial with no BS

I am as Russian and understand everything, thank you very much!
I’m so glad. I try to keep it simple and straightforward. I’m glad it’s working for you.
question ...but why not pre-compose all layers you need (in this case the Text layers) then using the track matt on them?
helpful
hello SIr ... i somehow cant find the Source column in my set matte where i can select masks and effects .. can you please help me out ..awaiting reply .. thank you
👍👍
This has yet to work for me. DOes anyone else have the same problem? I have a shape layer, I have an image, I place "set matte" on image I want, i set take matte from desired shape layer and... nothing happens.
This is addressed but when you have an image or footage, it needs to be precomped and then rasterized. Set matte only works with rasterized layers
