That 1.5L Renault /Nissan engine is a cracking powerplant. I'm driving a Nissan NV-200 van with the 1.5 and its still running great at 347,000 miles!!!!
Honestly, that Firebird is a bit of a heap. Move it on and get a nicer weekend toy, plenty of Americana out there in better mechanical and cosmetic shape, Chops.
You were adjusting the mixture bud that's why it cut out, 2 screws on carb are mixture, try 1.5 turns as a start, idle is on linkage, also another one to set choke idle speed, best way is a Co meter up either exhaust and set to say 1.5%co. I'd have those heads off, the steel seal money would have bought a gasket set bud(!)
My company sells steel seal there is a few things to keep in mind, the head gasket needs to be metal, it work's but you might only get another year or two, works better on smaller engines, you can put in with coolant and just leave it in, for first use probably best to remove thermostat for a day or two, wouldn't put it in a newer car only something that's not worth the work involved in doing the head.
Seen it used on a 10.8L engine with an external crack on the cylinder head. It's still holding just fine, 6 years later. I personally thought this stuff would not work. I was wrong.
Before you can be sure about the overheating you need to have an accurate temp gauge, even if the temp was up to the top of the gauage as it's i F (farenheight) 212 is 100 degrees C and so is an acceptable temperature. The water pissing out of the overflow could easily just have been a duff rad cap allowing water past the seal.
Some good looking stock there mate. That i10 and the 500 are lovely. Dread to think how much that i10 is being auto. That X1 was nice too. The Merc will be nice for that special someone 😂 sorry, not my colour but I agree, good engine. Yaris has come up nice too, I sold one just like that this year, it was lovely.
I put steel seal in my ford granada 2.8ghia x 112000 miles head was blown .i put a bottle in £30 full heaters half an hour then ran it ,its on 197000 miles now no issues .
Hello from Ireland again, James. I love that Mercedes. I wish I could afford it, lol. We need more Podcasts with you and Joe. Your great crack together. Comedians lol. Great video as always James 🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏
There's not too many adjustments on yank carbs bud, idle and base mixture, probably just 2 screws, maybe idle 850,auto box will drag it down in gear a bit, mixture screw, try 1.5 turns out, I had one and went to mot station and set it on their co meter, about 2% Co was about right.
As you say bud, you keep your minters for retail and trade your sh*t off. Steel seal will hold for a bit, especially after all that amount (!) it'll blow tho. Tbh not a big job on a push rod v8 taking the heads off, comp check each plug to see which on, look at plugs, if it's not actually loosing coolant tho, but overheating, most likely block is furred up, try running a pressure washer thru it, if it's pressurising and blowing coolant out it's probably head gasket, thermostat is probably 82 degrees one.
Get one of those head gasket checkers that go into radiator bud to check for exhaust gases, comp check to find out which head, maybe gaskets rotted out due to age, probably heads not warped due to being a massive cast iron, head should be dead easy to do, no cams or belts just old style push rods, head off, check if it's true, piece of glass to see if it like a banana, St edge with feeler gauge, maybe a skim and it's done, should have gone for head gasket check first bud before new rad and all that.
Given the noise coming from the temp gauge when you tap it, I would suggest it's well shagged . . . I'd pop another one in and then do the heads . . . enjoy it in the meantime !!
Had a problem with a Fiesta 1-2 . 09 Plate. Non of the usual Head Gasket symptoms , but kept loosing coolant. Tried a bottle k-Seal. Three weeks later heater stops blowing hot !!. Heater Matrix clogged. So be careful with these products. Did Head Gasket problem solved.
I take it you have checked and it is a head gasket, just years ago I had a Dodge charger and the top hose was not reinforced and used to close up when the revs went up a new reinforced top and bottom hose sorted it 🙂
I would say it's the dirty diesel engine that's putting people of the Merc. Lovely looking car nice colour if it was a petrol I bet it would be long gone 😉.
thats the mixure addjustment im sure just adjust the acceloraiter idle ,your making it all a mess ,leave it running at least an hour it goes into steel.
If I'd watched this about 7 years ago I'd be agreeing with you. 6 years ago my dad used this stuff himself. I was adamant that it wouldn't work, he had an external crack in a cylinder head. This "crap" sealed it, without any adverse effects and it's still holding today. The engine was a 10.8L 430hp Paccar, fitted to a lorry. I now bite my tongue if I see people using this....😂
Tried it in two cars and the water pump failed on both cars . One within 6 hours and the second car had a new water pump and put steel seal in car as a precaution and water pump failed within 3 months.
All I can say is don't walk away from Steel Seal, run! As a desperate measure, if I were stuck in Death Valley, maybe. But under all other circumstances I'd rather pluck my own eyes out. Against my better knowledge, I grudgingly used some (recommended dosage) on a Golf TDi. Result? Buggr'd heater core and essentially death of working heating ... never again. First time in 35 years, last time too!
Absolutely correct; it’s known as ‘retirement gold’ in our house and is usually indicative of a certain type of flat-capped driver who’s never had an accident, but seen plenty in his mirrors! My kids in their 20s (and I) wouldn’t go near it just because of the colour.....
Chops Chops. Chops. I also watch Valley Car Sales. Greg and Sarah. They put in a big CC Rangie. Didn't work. It's designed for XEP engine family 1.0 through 1.4 Corsa. Exclusively. Low.
That Toyota is 17 years old for Pete's sake. What would she have bought in the 1960s for 27 years? Some folk would grumble to be hung! You go the extra mile and then some. I ruined a VW Turbo diesel camper van engine by additive. It blocked the radiator. The garage said I was a prat and charged me £2,800 for a replacement engine and then a radiator. It had done 100,00 so was worn out. Never added anything again to anything.
Not my sort of car mate I hate the steel wheels they should come with alloy wheels all the time I'll go for a lovely low mileage ford Fiesta 1.2 diesel or a Kia picanto 1.2
I keep suggesting try retail for a week bud, why take a quick profit when you might get a grand more in a couple of days, get a trade bid then stick a grand over that, if no go after a week, trade it then, if it's a minter like that BM I bet you'd sell it St away, stop making other dealers money bud.

Mercedes maybe not selling as it's a manual.
I'd say a combination of the two comments, manual & a Renault van engine in it.
High precision engineering in that temp. guage
Good video James 🚘🚙🚗👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thanks 👍

210-220 f is the correct running temperature.
Get rid of the Firebird, it's a money pit!
Dererk from Bangers and Cash always say's Wheels and Windows...clean windows and clean wheels add's another £200 on any car..
Did Pete bring his commode with him?
I use the same machine polisher, Great machine but looking for a small one to get into little areas.

Overheating the least of your problems, that cars steering wheel is on the wrong side 😊

Spot on, it will also reduce the cooling efficiency of the main radiator- years ago people used all sorts of bodges - always ended in disaster.
That 1 series has done some serious towing…

I would have to change the number plate on the BMW !
Shame you traded on the x1 seemed a very nice car. . No doubt Joe will load the price!
How do you mean. Autotrader sets the price

Very likely to be the colour of the Merc that's stopping it selling as it's a nice car with low running costs
