I watched your video in 2022 and after buying a used Dodge Journey and suffering for months I adopted your fix and it worked like a charm. Thank you so so much !
I've had this issue with my 2010 Journey for a year with no real solution. The dealership has replaced the starter three times this year alone even though I have insisted that there is something else going on. I was just about to take it back to the dealership today when I watched this video and decided to try it out. The car fired right up and continues to fire up every time I turn the key. Thanks for the tip!
This vehicle is a lemon. Shame on Dodge. I’m having this same issue amount a handful of others and only 50k miles. Poor design all around. Thank you for the video!
Omg, I have been struggling with this for almost a year now and have tried everything! You are a life saver. This saved me when I was in the middle of nowhere. I used my jumper cables as a bridge from the ground to the block. Worked like a charm. Now I have that same Walmart cable in place! Ty ty ty!
I bought a 2010 Dodge Journey and was told that the battery was replaced recently. I experienced the car not starting as well and decided to try out this method and it totally worked. You are a freaking genius brother. God bless you.
I am currently struggling!! I'm a single mom and unfortunately enough.. my dad was a master mechanic ( but specialized in transmission work/replacement)he passed when I was 3 and I'm still kicking myself for not pushing the issue of mechanics training as a teenager, times like these he comes to mind even more often ugh. I really wish I had help!! I literally just bought my journey about 6 days ago and have been stranded twice..and unable to leave my house randomly because of this nightmare!! I hate to bother anyone but is there any way you could reply with basically an "idiots guide" for me?? 😊I seen sort of what he meant (I get the general info)..however since I didn't see the actual entire process I'm lost! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!
I waited 4 months to try this and it works. It’s been 3 months since I added the cable and turns over right away. It was getting to the point to that I had to jump the car every time to start. The gas gauge was stuck on 1/4 tank for 2 months and alarm would go over occasionally when I used the key fob. (Added cable and gas gauge works and alarm system is not going crazy). Thank you so much!!!
2009 Dodge Journey, 3.5 6cyl FWD: At first I thought it was the Neutral Safety Switch. However, I was unable to locate it and I believe that, contrary to my research, the Switch is inside the transaxle. I tried your solution which makes sense... the starter needs more than simply a chassis ground... and it works so far! I cannot thank you enough for this solution... I even called Chrysler-Dodge to no avail. They claimed they have not received enough complaints on this issue... One good turn deserves another: Another issue with this car are the brakes. I found my wife going through pads every 6-9 months. I solved that issue by employing drilled slotted rotors with ceramic brake pads! The original pads are too small for this car so when you brake, there is too much friction, creating too much heat, which warps the rotors. Now they last about 18 months or so... Again, Thank you!
I had slotted and drilled brakes and they barely made it a year. Here's a tip that I didnt realize it at the time......don't ever use the step emergency brake when you park the dodge. I did but due to corrosion on the linkage it caused problems and roll resistance. I think that caused the caliper(s) to lock up and seize during commutes. In sort it messed things up. I had to replace the slotted and drilled rotors. They made a lot of noise on top of the problems the brake system had. So far so good with the new normal brakes.
A different reason I've seen for premature brake wear is that a brake hose from the brake master cylinder is going through a little metal fixture that holds it in place. This little metal fixture will with time start to rust making the brake hose start to collapse so that the brake fluid can not flow through properly making the brake cylinder be slightly pushed out all the time. There is a youtube video showing how this works
Gosh! For several years our 2010 Journey has had the intermittent issue where it would run just fine you then park it and the next time you go to drive... You can't get the stupid thing started. The Journey has be sitting in the driveway for 3 days. Power comes on when you turn the key on, but starter won't engage and turn over. I came across your video and wanted to express my thanks to you for sharing your video with all of us in UA-camland. I did exactly what you instructed, went to Wal-Mart - purchased the cable, installed it and BINGO!!! The Journey started! May the heavens bless you - Thanks
Thanks for this quick and easy fix. This was a problem for 5 plus years now. There has been multiple replacements of auto parts to fix the problem worth over 5K but nothing worked. Now my car works like a car should be!! Thanks again
There is already an existing redundant grounding jumper installed between the engine and the grounding terminal extension. It starts from the terminal on the right ( 2:16, finger touching the black cable), runs under the filterbox and terminates on the engine right next to transmission dipstick incase of 2.7L/3.6L (62TE Transmission). Sometimes it gets corroded and It requires cleaning at both ends for better current flow.
Thank you. We had the same problem with our 2009 journey ran the battery cable just like you did and it starts just fine after putting on two brand new starters.it kept doing the same thing ran the ground cable from the body post to the engine bracket and it took care of the problem .Thank again. Jim W.
Thank you so much for this video! You saved me a day of troubleshooting. I’ve been running this extra cable for a week now (2009 Journey)with zero problems! Another problem it seems to have solved is my remote to unlock the car works better too! Thank you again!
@@SeanPClements the “extra cable/wire” I mean is that you run a second negative battery cable from your battery to a solid metal grounding surface to give you a better connection to your charging system. The factory wire that comes installed in the Journey is not very sufficient for the electrical demand required for the car itself (a design flaw of dodge) so as time goes by the cable gets worn and then you start to get the problems like it not being able to pull enough electricity to start the car. Having the second cable will give you the extra ummph to get that starter motor turning.
I have a 2014 Dodge Avenger and it is doing this exact same thing. It was slow starting at first, then it started up fine for about a month. The all of a sudden it started slow starting again, and finally it wouldn't do anything but the 1 click. I changed the battery yesterday, still just the 1 click. I was prepared to go buy a starter today, and I ran across this video. I'm DEFINITELY trying this first, before I try to do the painstaking job of trying to change out that starter.
Worked like a charm... I didn't use and extra nut.. just took off both nuts and placed it with the one on the bottom.. 15mm deep well sock worked great.. Oh and Yes noticed it starts differently ... I like hearing it crank a but before starting.. It might fix other problems also with better Ground... Once more Thanks...
A friend that works at Dodge told me that it's the ground cable that goes from the negative post on the firewall to the block is not made of a thick enough gauge wire an is prone to rust i replace it an all my problems with my 2010 went away .
Hey.. just wanted too thank you for this vid.. you saved me a lot of hassle.. I hooked up the cable the way you did.. and Walla!! No more started problem.. thanks again
I believe this is the issue most people really have and they are replacing starters or the neutral safety switch, called something else on this car. It might be the neutral safety that controls the grounding of the engine block. I have same issue. It's been getting worse and worse. Basically happening more often. Fix was always leave key on run and wiggle shifter. Then that didn't work. Stranded hundreds of miles from home without tools or transportation I was forced to tow and use a shop to fix for $700. They replaced the starter. Worked 3 times then stopped completely again. $700 wasted. I wired a start button in. Worked great 2 weeks. Now nothing again. So while troubleshooting, I discover my engine has a very weak ground. Going to see what happens when I ground it better.
Well great news so far. I grounded the engine block directly to the battery. I also grounded the engine block to the firewall ground. Now my key is starting the car again. No need for the button I wired in anymore. I also found the factory engine ground location. It's on the transmission next to the starter. It wasn't loose but I did tighten it a full turn. I hope this helps. Good luck. Don't waste money on a starter and check the engine ground before replacing anything.
I just had this issue on my 2017, it works and runs even better than before. I had to take the air filter housing off to find the spot on the engine block.
I have that exact same problem at the moment with my 2010. Along with the added horn going off periodically throughout the entire day and night. It still does it but not nearly as loud as I had to pull my horn fuses,as it would go off when also driving it. Of coarse no help from dodge ,not a recall being as not a safety hazard . So its listed as a star review as they won't take back all the 09s -the 2016's journeys. Anyone else have these problems with theirs? The vehicle also now sounds like the door and or lights are on, even when the car is shut off. Thank you for this video I will try this to hopefully get rid of one of the problems . called dodge every dealership around here. they either gave me advice that didn't work and or spend hundreds of thousands to never get the exact problem fixed. Guess there are thousand of people over the world that have /had these problems before when looking online about the journeys
After 2 years I finally found the problem check the plug on the starter, run another ground from block to chassis, then if you have a check engine light for evape leak change the purge value I don’t have this problem anymore!!!!! Promise it’s works and will save you lots of money
Hi All , I have the same issue in Dodge Journey 2009 , but i don’t have black bracket where I have to mount other terminal , I have checked several time , is there any other screw where I can mount other end ? Any help will be highly appreciated
I know I'm late to the game but IDK if others have had this issue but when mine a 2012 doesn't start All my lights on the dash is wigging out including the door chime. Is this simular to what you guys experience?
Dodge and chrysler are junk. Waot til you see the battery replacement procedure on these. Saw it today. You need a jack to lift the car to even replace the battery. Serious.
Also, the battery terminals are crammed up against the wiring harness that goes to the fuse block that sits on top of the battery. If your battery corrodes and gets into the harness.... bad news. I can’t believe dodge designed their car with it like this! 🙁
Most BASIC batteries should last 5 years. I have seen one last to 9 years. You've done well if you get 6 years or more. But one year proves that dodge is using complete rubbish batteries. I've never actually heard of that outside of cheap small chinese 6 volt lead acid deep cycle batteries (used in some camping equipment but rarely seen).
I have a 2018 and recently started having problems came across this video gonna try it , cause my vehicle needs. Jump everytime now and I don't like it .🤞🤞 I'll let you know if it works
The stock battery holder can also be another issue as to why the Journey won’t start. I would recommend replacing it. I’ve seen videos where pressing the start button (5) times may work but that only resolves the issue at that moment. You should double check if your battery is tightly held. A lose battery will cause the anti-theft mode or will simply not start.
Thanks for posting this video. My mechanic couldn't find a reason for this problem. I'm having him do this ground wire thing Tuesday. I wonder if a jumper cable from the block to the terminal would work as a temp starting fix if it strands a person and won't start. Probably.
Also have a 2009 that wont start, getting stuck with the little kids. We have changed almost everything in that car! We will try this! Thank’s!! Also shared your vidéo !
Edward Lakatos today is 1/15/23 , and I followed every instruction you put into this video , and I must say you are A fuckin Genius went and got a $23 ground wire from Advanced auto Parts , and connected it to the engine Block , and back to the chasity connection to the car , and what do you know Vroooooooom ! You are definitely honored and respected for this video you saved me thousands of dollars 💸, salute gratitude , the 2010 Journey started up strongly , went out to test it again and what do you know it's still strong going 💪 thank you sir you are appreciated *(7)
That's what mine does, I got a 2010 and it won't start right now. Completely dead like the wires are making no contact with starter, but everything else works. Normally I have to wait until the next day and then it just magically starts the first time again like there was never anything wrong. It normally will last a couple months with no problems, Then NOT start again . So today I'm stuck home, dealing with this for years I hate it. Your right though the dealer denies anything is wrong and it never does that no starting shit for them.
I have heard you can fix the problem with a RPG-7. Fixes most dodges. There's actually quite a few cars with crap leads including Japanese stuff. We had another fix with old Australian right hand drive Fords. They wouldn't key start due to the current they tried to put thru the ignition so the VERY common solution was a relay on the firewall. And you'd wire the ignition to the and the starter to the heavy connectors on the relay. You could get the kit from auto stores because so many people were doing it.
Hi i had a same issue with my 2013 Dodge journey if i don’t start every day it wont start battery is fine i replace it last year can you tell me or guide me what would be the best thing to check
I know this is going to sound dumb but I didn't and it worked... but only after I turn the headlights on tried to start it and putting a draw on the battery it's a connection issue somewhere in the vehicles
You did what 3 dealerships and countless so-called mechanics couldn't do...think outside the dam box!! One dealer actually told me my battery was no good..."oh, you mean the one I just bought from Mopar 3 days ago"? Hmmm, try again Larry, Curly and friggin Moe! Thank you sir. Please if you would, delve a little deeper in all the Ram, Town and Country, Sebring and most all other Chryler issues they can't figure out...it would be much appreciated by...the whole world!
shift neutral sensor causes my 09 Journey not to start as if it had a dead battery. Wiggle the shifter in park or take out of park and back into park and it will start.
I have a 2015 dodge, pls can it work for it. Because all the lights of the dashboard is off and the car won’t make even make click sound when I tried to start it. Though I thought the battery is completely dead and tried to jump start but it won’t work... just the click sound. What do you think I can do. I really need help here
Same crap happened to me last week. Just like you, my truck was completely dead, no lights no nothing. I live in Chicago and we had a polar bortex, with -50°F wind chill, which made me think was the cause for my car not starting. We tried jump starting it and nothing until I took it to the shop. They told me it was the starter, so they replaced it for $300. It was just a waste of money becuase exactly a week after having it replaced the damn truck won't start again. I'm going to find someone to do this on my truck and see if it helps. Ugh!
Got a 2010 Journey and the damn thing is a work horse! Yes, I have the clicking problem every now and then with the starter. Especially when it is hot (I live in south central Texas.) Put your foot on the brake, put the gear in neutral and give the key a turn, see if that works. Also, leave it in park, tap the gear shift "forward"... just tap it, and it usually starts then. My electrical system also goes solly-wongo every once in a while. Getting that looked at tomorrow. I am a "Dodge Gurl" from way back, and all cars have little weird behaviors. Dodge's seem to have less than others.
That is how mine acts too, live in Pennsylvania, all winter no issues, but as soon as summer hits I start having this issue. My mechanic ran a ground for me to the block and it worked for a couple weeks, thought he had it, but nope, still doing it. Going to try your tricks when it acts up again.
Hi, I had a question about this. I followed my negative terminal cable and it connected to the engine block. The same place where you have yours connected. Did your car have that cable already there and you added another one? Can't tell in the video because it was dark and you moved to fast. Also does it matter if we add another negative ground just in case. Or would it cause more problems or not necessary. Please let me know. Thanks
Anyone else have any issues with having headlights or windshield wipers being on causing less power to be given to the car and the radio going out? Do you know if this will fix that also?
I just bought a Dodge Journey 2009.. yesterday I was stock on the gastation for 20 minutes till a Good Samaritan came to my rescued he fix it I went home try to started again no such luck.. he said the negative cable on the battery was loose. I have tightened that like 3 times already and it always comes loose. What should I do?
I watched your video in 2022 and after buying a used Dodge Journey and suffering for months I adopted your fix and it worked like a charm. Thank you so so much !
Yes same issue with mine the day i got it! Husband forced this suv on me-i just bought a different car but keeping this for winter so will try and fix

I have the same issue in Dodge Journey 2009 , but i don’t have black bracket where I have to mount other terminal , I have checked several time , is there any other screw where I can mount other end ? Any help will be highly appreciated
Here I thought this was going to solve everything and I needed to do was scrape and clean my battery terminals, as fun as that is getting to it :)
I know I'm late to the game but IDK if others have had this issue but when mine a 2012 doesn't start All my lights on the dash is wigging out including the door chime. Is this simular to what you guys experience?
it's the same thing for 2.4l 4 in line?
Definitely gonna try this on my moms 2009 journey
worst decision buying this POS. thanks for the tip.
installed a Napa battery 3 years ago no issue since...had 5 dodge new batteries in the first five years....this what worked for me.
How has it been starting since you added the battery cable?
Where do I connect it to the block?
Is the Journey still starting with this setup?
Dump it. That's what I did with my 2009 Journey.
Foi tiro e queda!!
Me salvou o dia.
Thks my friend!!!
I personally would have just connected the terminal end to the battery. Too many connections for resistance (voltage drop). Good video
my 2012 dodge journey same problem but i can't find the engine block to attach the terminal ground, any suggestions?
Very good tip, thanks for share this with all us
Hello, Are 2 connection being made, one from engine block to chassis ground stud then chassis ground stud to negative side of battery.
We have this problem with electricity warning lights how can fix that?
Thanks for posting this video. My mechanic couldn't find a reason for this problem. I'm having him do this ground wire thing Tuesday. I wonder if a jumper cable from the block to the terminal would work as a temp starting fix if it strands a person and won't start. Probably.
Also have a 2009 that wont start, getting stuck with the little kids. We have changed almost everything in that car! We will try this! Thank’s!! Also shared your vidéo !
It works?
It did not start one time after we did that but it was like -40 outside that day so🥶..🤞🏻🤞🏻
Just had a mechanic do this today for $40. Bought the cable for $15. Fingers crossed it works
Did this work out for u?
Edward Lakatos today is 1/15/23 , and I followed every instruction you put into this video , and I must say you are A fuckin Genius went and got a $23 ground wire from Advanced auto Parts , and connected it to the engine Block , and back to the chasity connection to the car , and what do you know Vroooooooom ! You are definitely honored and respected for this video you saved me thousands of dollars 💸, salute gratitude , the 2010 Journey started up strongly , went out to test it again and what do you know it's still strong going 💪 thank you sir you are appreciated *(7)
Dodge: to avoid.
I'm going to try this on my 2009 dodge journey. I've had nothing but problems since I bought it so hopefully this works. fingers crossed
Same year, what helped you starting your car
did you use 2 4-gaug cables or one
Going to try this on our 2010 hopefully it works 😊
I have a 2011 dodge journey lux. still runs great.
Does it still run great today?
yeah still runs great. thanks for asking. but I do have trouble with the key fobs. batteries die very quickly.
I did this but not sure if I grounded it right. Where is a good spot can y’all specify?
Could it be the sensor in the transmission?
Thank you, I got an Avenger same engine same problem, I will do the fix.
So I am going through this now, can anybody update and tell me if this is working long term? Thank you
I know this is going to sound dumb but I didn't and it worked... but only after I turn the headlights on tried to start it and putting a draw on the battery it's a connection issue somewhere in the vehicles
Will the same thing work on a 2014 with the 3.6L V6 and push-button start?
I'm about to try! Did it work for you??
@@Edav1019 Did it work?
You are awesome for this
shift neutral sensor causes my 09 Journey not to start as if it had a dead battery. Wiggle the shifter in park or take out of park and back into park and it will start.
Still good?
Just follow the negative cord it leads you right to the engine block😎
Damm !!!! Same
Problem on 2010, I’m trying this!!!!!!😊
I have a 2015 dodge, pls can it work for it.
Ugh!
Same here having this issue exactly going to try I'll keep updated
Worked for me 2010 Journey
Hi,
I had a question about this.
Thanks
I've done this and works, about to do it to a 16 model
Any luck with the 2016 mode?l I'm about to try it on my wife's 2016 journey. It just started having the same problem.
@@Fxm2012 How did it work for you? What size gauge did you use? Length? Where did you connect it?
Anyone else have any issues with having headlights or windshield wipers being on causing less power to be given to the car and the radio going out? Do you know if this will fix that also?
I just bought a Dodge Journey 2009.. yesterday I was stock on the gastation for 20 minutes till a Good Samaritan came to my rescued he fix it I went home try to started again no such luck.. he said the negative cable on the battery was loose. I have tightened that like 3 times already and it always comes loose. What should I do?
I have a 2015 journey with the same issue i will try this out tomorrow morning my car broke down for the 3rd time since i got it 5 month's ago
Did you try it? Mine just broke down tonight.
Did it work?
@@geeess958 yes it does work the started cable is way to tin i put a battery cable like the guy say and so far so good
@@mezeerick84 thank you so much. Gonna try tonight.
