- Welcome to a special episode of Cookin' with Helix, in which I quickly (haha) discuss and demo the new amp and gain pedal models in Line 6 Helix Firmware Update 3.0! Keep in mind these are FIRST IMPRESSIONS, definitely not dialed in yet, but hopefully it's a good overview. This new update is a DOOZY. Enjoy!

Sounds so great brother! I appreciate the depth and not just glancing over the new features.
Thanks man! I’m a stompbox freak, so when they add new pedals to this thing I try to treat it as if I just got a huge box of goodies from Sweetwater.
@@JB_Eckl just no candy 😔
Thanks for taking the time to produce these Helix videos JB. I really enjoy the way you connect the musical, technical, and historical elements together into a cohesive whole, much appreciated indeed.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you're digging it! I wish there was time to do them more often.
Hi JB - I just stumbled across your channel and love it. I appreciate your in-depth reviews of the various amps and stomps of the Helix. The Pocket Fuzz your talked about sounds very much like the LPB1 booster I used back in the early 70's. Very simple design, cheap to buy and sounded great! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Thanks for sharing!
Much appreciated man! Stay tuned; there’s a lot of stuff in the works... a LOT... haha.
Sounds great man! I use the Helix as well and I love these tones! Keep it up my fellow VRA mate 🤘
Loved the playing... especially when you were on the G&L!
Thanks! Gotta love the George & Leos.
Right .. love that Les paul semi hollow .. & All things considered ( from my point of view ) The line 6 looks like it could be a way forward for me .. My wife is actually a few years older than me ( was at one point this when we ran a music club in London ) considered by some to be her Toyboy lol .. But it is a serious possiblity we will have to sell this upstairs / downstairs place which is so high up on the hill that if you were to go for a traditional English Pint in the Village Pub opposite the traditional Cricket pitch , By the time you had walked back up the hill you would be sober . Currently I have over 22 guitars & three tables covered in other gear .. Sadly there is not much of a 2nd hand market in these troubled times .. I have an old ( 80's ? ) Fender Frontman 30 R .. Which has no gimmicks but is so loud I have never really turned it up much & it weighs more than I can easily carry .. Sounds Gr8 but as JJ Cale said when asked about what amps he used " Well since the Roadies don't come around no more I just kinda use whatever I can carry the easiest or plug into something else if I can borrow it " & as he say's later in the interview " funny thing is most half decent guitar player can get a sound of any decent guitar & most of the time you can make it sound the way you want anyhow " But my best studio was a Trailer style Home like thing we bought cheap & I had it on the hill above our 300 year old farmhouse & I never had a noise complaint even at 4am in the morning . Right now its 8.30.pm & we have a full moon out I think it's around 2 or 3 in the afternoon where you are . In conclusion if I had a lot of money to spare I think I would invest in the line 6 & the Variax I have a lot of yamaha gear .. 3 Keyboards & Cubase pro 11 which Yamaha own steinberg & have teamed up with Variax on the Standard all my drums & stuff apart from alessis drum machine as a way to keep me in check if I get too sloppy .. Lately I have been playing a lot of slide as arthritis in the fingers just not as nimble & My Fender P bass is too heavy for me I can't stand up wearing it for long & I need a cushion on my knee to play it normally .. But I use a short scale Epiphone Eb0 .. & I have a Casino which is lovely to play & a Gibson D.c re issue which is just a joy to play when I am warmed up . I have a famous name multi fx floor thing which I have on a coffe table & can use all the switches just like a row of pedals & a bunch of other stuff valve pre amps & a 24 trk recorder plus a 12 trk 7 two older Yamaha mixers I just need an Casey Jones ( Engineer ) No seriously it's all been a learning curve buying things bit by bit 2nd hand & reduced to clear & The truth is I can record with it all but with all the Testing & adjustments & trying to get comfortable .. I realised that whenever I have been pressing record I have forgotten to switch my hat back to being the performer .. & so the gain levels might be allright but the performance is mediocre if not just plain tired out LOL .. Undaunted .. I do not lie very often hardly ever in fact & I have been inspired to get back on the Horse so to speak since I discovered your channel ( or u- tube decided we were a match ) I listen to a lot of American music & I am also following a really Gr8 little Band from Canada called Ludic .. They are two brothers & a fabulous Guitarist Ayla Tessler - mabe .. ( I think they need a front person but their music is so tight & fresh to me I wouldn't know what young people are looking for these days ) I am a big fan of Tedeschi Trucks Band & John mayer stole my guitar sound .. I think Vince Gill is incredible & I adore Alison Krauss Joss Stone Norah Jones Kate Bush Peter Gabriel .. just the one King Crimson album Indiscipline .. Sammy over DLR in Van Halen / & I grew up on some of the best of British Rock Free with Paul Rodgers as my Desert island Studio musician he can do it all . The outlaws waylon jennings & Linda Ronstadt what a voice .. enough .. I have worn myself out today trying to do chores in the Garden ( keep my wife happy ) & the usual Spring clean fervour which seems to hit women so hard .. ( are you going to sell that Bike ? ) LOL So all the Best JB to you & yours let us just try & think positive / better days ahead . Cheers for now Ben the old man in the Woods
Nice demo man. Love the sound of that blue Strat too.
Thanks, I love that guitar! All these G&Ls are insane.
Well produced, and great playing too. Subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
Oh my god, the tooooooone! Sounds amazing. I’ve just got round to upgrading to 3.0 today and I can’t wait to have a play
Glad you dig it! Which tone stuck out to you?
@@JB_Eckl I think I left the comment while you were on the Princeton. Sounded great with both guitars. Subbed to the channel BTW!
Nice demo - thanks!
Tasteful playing... just subscribed. Smiling with you. Installed 3.0 but too busy to fully test, but getting a great feel for it here.
Thanks so much. As with all the other updates, you’ll find lots to love here.
JB is the king of taste! you're gonna love the update
You deserve a few artist preset spots in the next helix update! Really great tones, playing and hosting
WOOO that would rock! I was asked about it by Line 6 recently, we’ll see what happens
Great playing and great tone!
Thanks so much! I’m something of a studio rat myself... ha.
Wow! Fellow Helix user and VRA member! You really know your stuff! Great job on your demo and the quality of the video! You're definitely ahead of me! Wish you the very best, James Ponak
Thanks so much. I’ve been setting up shop for a few months in a new place and trying to find a rhythm with all this. Let me know what you think of the other videos on the channel!
@@JB_Eckl I'm in total learning mode! Learning my Helix, and learning to make UA-cam videos. It's overwhelming at times. I'll take a look at your channel to see what you can teach me next! James Ponak
Thanks from New Zealand. Really useful for a Stomp guy. 🙏🏼
I still have to get me one of those...
Great demo bro thank you!
Glad you liked it!
The VH4 channel 3 has become THE high gain tone for me. Before that it was the Dual Rec (which is one of my favorite amps of all time). But that VH4 is absolutely amazing.
JB, I'm new here, but just subscribed. Nice tones, I enjoyed that demo. Cheers!
Welcome! Thanks for the kind words. Hope you enjoy some of the other videos too; things are just getting started around here.
JB is the best!
Sounds great, JB!
Thanks McTuberson.
OoOoOo.... I didn’t even know we had a third Big Muff in there. I was having so much fun with the Bg Horn Ram’s Head Muff that I hadn’t got around to exploring the other stuff yet! 😃. I like a good Big Muff but didn’t think the old Triangle Fuzz sounded right. The range of the sustain knob is too low. The Big Horn is the opposite. The range of the sustain knob is higher than any of my real Muffs. The sweet spot for my guitar is 2! I’ll have to check out Ballistic Fuzz. Really good video. Perfect balance of demo and explanation.
Thanks for the feedback; I’m so glad they’re putting so many fuzzes in here. I don’t currently have any real Big Muffs, so I’m especially grateful for these models. Let me know if there’s something else I should explore down the road.
Dude, your little playing bits are gorgeous. Voting this one up to work on stealing them :)
Wow, thanks man. Maybe there's something useful in there!
Man, I love that intro. Lol...
Great video on a great device. My last gig was as an embedded dev. I would love to get my hands on the the firmware source code for this beast. Lol...
It's all about the intro. ha!
Great stuff. New sub. Keep it up. Rock on
Thanks for the sub!
For the Swedish Death Metal "Chainsaw" you need to crank the pedal all the way up and do it against a solid state Marshall or similar. Loved the review, you really excelled at such a demonstration! Ha, ha! I am about to install Windows in order to perform the updates (radical GNU/Linux head here). I can't wait!
That’s basically what I had in my teens! Exactly.
Great playing & sounds JB!! Are those G&L pickups stock?
Hey thanks. All my G&Ls have stock pickups. They're half the reason to get those guitars; G&L pickups are all incredible.
nice sounds
Thanks! Not hard to get with Helix
Sounds damn good
Glad it’s coming across!
Killer Vibe!!
Right on Sheldon! It’s all about the vibe. Haha
Love the playing, is your princess tone the stock amp or a custom tone?
Stock, through the 1x10. It’s hard to get a bad sound out of it. Thanks for the kind words!
Good vid dude. However, About Face is Gilmour’s 2nd album, his first one is eponymously titled. I like your playing, it reminds me of my own, nice and loose, peace ✌️
That’s right!! I remember now. The first one has the cover where he’s standing outside. It’s been awhile...!
Nice video. Great tones. You might want to consider a boom arm so your face and guitar are not obscured at times.
It’s true! I’ll be trying several ways to get good audio, this is the one I had handy. Much appreciated man!
Hey JB, what do you have the helix plugged into? What do you use as your powered speaker? Thanks P.S. Love your playing style!!!
This stuff is all straight into Pro Tools, through an RME interface. But I also use it with my Boogies and now a Power Cab. Basically every which way possible.
@@JB_Eckl Thanks, I'm using a EV ZLX powered monitor for live, and direct into Studio Pro 4 through a Soundcraft Ui24R interface. I have been putting off loading in, but I'll be doing that this weekend.
Your intro is the bomb!!
Thanks... and bonus that the Helix survived!
How do you get such a noiseless signal using the Big Muff model on the Heliz? If you're using a gate block could you give the model and the settings? I can never get it very quiet.
I know I had a gate on the input block; not sure if I had one after. I may have. Settings wise… nothing special, just stuck the pedal in front of the WhoWatt and turned knobs.
Sounds amazing. What are the settings? What reverb?
Legacy plate, hi cut turned down pretty low. Glad you like!
Great TONES, do you mind to share how to post process the audio?
You’ll be happy to know that there is Zero post-processing, other than a limiter to keep it from overloading. The guitar sounds are straight off Helix.
@@JB_Eckl Wow that's unbelievable! Do you use Helix as your soundcard?
@@HansChristianIGUITARVANA would like to know too
What's your output setup? Are you direct through USB in the recording?
USB is the simplest way, and I use it that way a lot. But when I'm using a vocal mic, I put both of them through my main interface, which is an RME Fireface UFX II.
11:35 I like that guitar bro
CLF Research Doheny V12! It's a beast!
The poly pitch sounds way better than the original line 6 detuner
YUP
What year did you buy your HM (slight pause) pedal?
‘86
@@JB_Eckl Are you a 1970 baby?
Was this a direct recording, or mic'd through a power cab or something?
Straight in, no amps, no IRs, nothing. I was really blown away by the 1x10 cab model.
@@JB_Eckl but is it through line6 pedal or usb interface and the line6 VST?
@@dutelatte2154 Helix floor. I do use the plug-in a lot though
Noice
Nice Video, and it would be GREATER if we could download this sounds ;)
These aren't carefully sculpted sounds; just throwing different pedals in front of amp models without much tweaking. You'll see if you try them!
Thought that out of the oven it was gonna get smaller and more powerful as the Quadcortex, guess not.
Awww man, you're gonna be that one guy? Hahaha. Oh well.
Will this software be available for pod go too?
You can check the line 6 website. I don’t believe it’s the same update for pod go than the helix though. I know it’s the hx effects and the hx stomp getting this update
Did POD Go ever get any of this stuff? I don't own one.
It`´s also ready for Helix Stomp ???
Yes
@@ConstantineM THX :-)
I think they always release the Stomp, Native and Floor versions at the same time
😄
I watched until you pulled your helix out of the oven with oven mitts.
That was the moment I should have captured your undying loyalty.
@@JB_Eckl okay fine I lied, “I just remarked, did this guy seriously just pull his helix out of the oven?” Then I kept watching.
So I watched this video this morning and spent the rest of the day trying to find an Es-Les Paul that comes even close to yours. What finish is that? Looks like trans black but I have a hard time seeing some colors. Please help! Extra subscribe if you can find one for me to buy. Or I’ll get 15 friends to subscribe if you sell me yours! Just kidding. I don’t have 15 friends.
Edit: Found it 2015 ES-Les Paul Cobra Burst. Can’t find one for sale though. Oh well another one to add to my ‘buy it if I find one in the wild’ list!
That's the one! 2015 ES-Les Paul Cobra Burst. God I love this guitar. If you do find one, snatch it up!
@@JB_Eckl i thought I’d try to help out. I looked for you everywhere except Craigslist. I looked on USA reverb, eBay. Even eBay Canada and all the USA stores. They would say it’s in stock and I’d go to the site and sold out. I found a nice, mint bengal striped but not ES. I thought it was nice but I didn’t even bother with 2015. It was impossible to even find this guitar without asking for a certain year. Anyway, I tried. Good luck to you. 👍
@@kcussrebutuemos4815 I appreciate the effort! I've seen them pop up on Reverb twice since I started looking. They're not around for long. I just search for Cobra Burst, and the two that have popped up have both been 2015s so maybe this finish is limited to just that year? I think i'm going to have to physically play one to make sure it contains the correct amount of magic in it for what is now a 6 year old guitar. Cheers!
