I am so bad about not commenting on UA-cam videos. I’m a pretty silent viewer, but I always thumbs up. I just had to say that this is probably the 15th time I’ve watched this video in it’s entirety. It is the best plant propagation resource I’ve found and I’ve learned so much from you, Charmaine. Keep up the amazing work! I look forward to every single video of yours. You’ve changed the plant game for me for the better thanks to your expertise.
Your voice is so calming. I listened to this whole thing while cleaning and now I need to rewatch and and actually pay attention so I can learn something new lol
Thanks for sharing, this is gold, like really useful content. Btw, you are one of the few plant people I enjoy, great sense of humour, great plants, great pup!
Hey! , transporting water to soil isn’t always bad a good way to prevent shock is to water your soil once you plant the plant with some water roots it may look sad for a few days but will perk up after !😊
I have been in the plant world for a while and have watched so many videos but your videos actually teach me a lot and are always exactly what I didn’t know I needed!
I love how thorough your videos are. This was excellent, and the fact it was over an hour, a treat! I was sat having my coffee just chilling and learning. You've made it so clear - and really easy to understand, even areas I've always wondered about, like moss propagation. Great editing, funny and chilled. And Pudge. We can't forget your side kick. Had he not found the treato we'd have fuck all to watch.
Thank you so much for all your advice on propagations! I am definitely going to start cleaning the trunks of my plants when I receive them. Also I have to share that because of Pug you have become my number one plant UA-camr 💙 my Leo is also enjoying watching your videos with me💕
Cinnamon is great to help dry up/callous open wounds or snipped ends pretty quickly. Plus it works as an anti fungal, antibacterial, and rooting hormone. First learned that in growing orchids, then in succulents, and now use it on all houseplant props.
I usually do mix in cinnamon into my hormone/sulphur powder mixture but I’ve been out for awhile and keep forgetting to buy more when I go grocery shopping 🤦🏻♀️ but it definitely is great for propagations! And an added bonus that your plants smell like Christmas 😍
Your dedication to cleaning those chonks 🙌 I'm a total beginner at propagation, I've rooted so many cuttings in water but they all struggled as soon as they hit the potting mix, guess I'll need to try growing soil roots via sphag and perlite! Thank you for making this video!
Love this video! Have your tried pumice in place of lechuza? I saw that benjiplants started doing this, and pumice is cheaper and more readily available than pon.
I worked the night shift, fell asleep, woke with your video playing and you voice is soo soothing 👍, The Plant 🪴 Queen that I have learned soo much from 👏🏼👍👏🏼.
So glad I stumbled upon this...wildly informative. Currently at a propagation crossroads hahah and these tips will really come in handy. Thanks for all of the detail you put into your videos!
Wow, you are a genius plant propagator!! I’m a fairly new plant parent and this video was fascinating on all that one can go to properly propagate plants 🪴!
While watching the intro of you talking, I realized I had zoned out and wasn't listening, but was instead watching Pudge's precious face while you were petting him❤
Thank you for this video! I know that spent nodes are not a thing. 😆 I read about it a bit because I had nothing left on my bipennfolium aurea cutting. I waited many months (6 ish) and eventually new growth grew right beside the old secondary that had died. Given the right conditions, they'll grow.
I just started watching but I kinda love hearing your dog snoring in the background. I hear it constantly from my dog so it's oddly comforting to hear when I'm watching your videos on the bus lol
I’m not sure if I missed your disclaimer statement, but based on my experience you can still transfer water propagations into soil safely. Just gotta over water in the beginning and ultimately those water roots will acclimate in the soil substrate. Sure, there are chances the water roots will rot when transplanting in soil, but I’ve had success with that method.
Such a good tip! Do you find this helps to prevent or slow down algae build up? I usually only use hydrogen peroxide if I'm trying to root something that had previously rotted, but never really thought about using it just for regular propagations!
Omg I rarely comment things but I neeeeeded to let you know that I LOVE all your videos & posts! Truly I appreciate the in depth guide, when I saw the length of the video I got so excited. your voice is so soothing & you are relatable af, especially the anxiety portion. I appreciate you being so open about the more personal stuff on mental health and stuff. I will be a 5ever subscriber 💖
💖 ALLIE 💖 !! I'm so late reading this comment but it totally made my day!! Thank you so much for sharing your kindness- I'm getting all the good vibes from you and I'm LIVINGGGG
Thank you for such an interesting video for a newbie. (I know it’s a year old but I had no plants back then lol) I grow absolutely everything in Leca. Succulents and all! The only plant I had a rot problem with was a Pixie Syngonium but I think it had some rot in it when it arrived, but it is now down to two wet sticks and a small cutting all washed in Hydrogen Peroxide🙁 I feel that this is a “Hail Mary” and I’m not hopeful - but as long as there is a little green, I will try and save it lol.
Wonderful video!! I like water propagating too- I’ve had the best luck. I did try going straight to an Aroid mix recently and I still prefer water! I’m loving learning about all the other methods though.
I don't know why water propagation gets so much hate! I've found it to be so effective too. If you have any questions about other methods, I'd be happy to help if I can!
That ear wax tool has also been in a few nail manicure kits I have. I use it for something other than it’s purpose as well lol. I guess is just a multifunctional tool.
Thank you for this video!! Can you explain how you know when it’s time to add more water to a passive hydro pot of leca/perlite/ pon when it’s in a non-see through pit?
I’m a newbie to the plant world so thank you so much for the very detailed video. I found it relaxing, informative and funny all at the same time! I have a few questions, can you use both Marphyl and calmag in soil or only for hydroponics? Do you ever you these two for when you plant in pon, leca or moss? Also, do you ever put rooting hormone and hydrogen peroxide directly in the water as well? I have so many more questions but I’ll leave it here 😂 you rock!
Hi Kathy!! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video 🥰 To answer your questions, I use Marphyl and CalMag in both soil and passive hydro plants. Right now I'm using a combo of Marphyl, Liquid Gold Leaf and Calmag in my pon, LECA and moss. As for the rooting hormone, I only use it to dip my cuttings and on roots. But I do add a drop of two of hydrogen peroxide in my water propagations if I'm dealing with root or stem rot! I hope that was helpful 🙈
You asked how I sat through this? I took breaks. Like it took me 2 days to watch the whole video but I thorougly enjoyed it. Love the in depth information paired with your calm attitude and how you also show mishaps. So glad I discovered your channel ♥
That’s definitely not true about water, you can grow in only water long term! As long as you fertilize! It’s basically the same thing as leca or pon. I know quite a few people who only grow in water. And they have HUGE plants. Like very mature plants. Larger than I’ve seen some in soil. Lol But, love your videos! Always so informative, and love your energy! Keep sharing, especially that pudge boy!!!
When you move a (fairly) new prop from water to moss, do you use the moss mixture w/ worm castings and enhancer that you showed in another video, or do you use that only when repotting from straight moss/coco to a larger moss pot?
Hi jenny! I'm so sorry for the late reply, but to answer your question, when I'm doing water to moss transition, typically I would just do straight moss or a mixture of moss and perlite!
hello! I'm so sorry for the late reply, but if you haven't seen this video I posted yet, I show my process here! It's not a perfect process, but it's what I've been doing up to this point.
I have to root my thai constellation that had root rotc and i want to do the leca/perlite/moss combination you did. How long before it rooted? How did you put the water - did you fill it up until 25% where the leca is, then added the perlite, the plant, then the moss? Did you dver refill? If yes, how did you do that. Where did you keep it while waiting for it to root? Does it have to be in a greenhouse? Sorry for all the questions - i am obviously panicking! 😅
Hi Triccie! I'm sorry for the late reply and I hope it's not too late. Off the bat I'll tell you that my track history with thai con's is not the greatest but to answer your questions- It took about a month to see any roots on my monstera in that LECA perlite moss combo. And I always cover 25%-50% of the LECA just depending how thirsty the plant is. And I actually filled all the substrates and then added the water last! I like to always keep the water line at least 25% for maintenance and I just use a squeeze bottle to water along the edges of the pot to refill it. You can watch my sphagnum moss video for a how to on that. And I just kept it in my plant room on a shelf underneath a 20W light. Lots of light and warmth I felt were key in getting it to root. I didn't use a heat mat! Just used the warmth from the grow lights. If you have a greenhouse, that's ideal but not required. :) Don't panic! And good luck rooting!
Where do you get the the clear soft nursery pots without drainage? It looked like they didn't have drainage. I can only find ones with big drainage holes
I actually just get them at a local nursery. If you live in the Vancouver area, I get it from Art Knapp Surrey. Otherwise I would try searching for pot companies or orchid supply websites online!
Hi Agnieszka! You can find it here, although it's so hard to get it once they're back in stock. They often sell out within minutes of restocking! www.lechuza.us/accessories-lechuza-pon/lechuza-pon-4.1-us.dry.gal/19563.html#cgid=Substrate
I received a plant with leca on bottom and sphagnum on top. I’m used to sphagnum but not leca and esp not sphagnum + Leca. Should I only bottom water and let the leca wick the water up and not wet the sphagnum moss on top at all? Or should I moist the sphagnum moss + bottom water the leca?
Hey Erica! If it's in a pot with drainage, I would just treat it like you would a plant in purely sphagnum moss. But if it's in a vessel with no drainage, I would fill enough water to cover at least half or 3/4 of the LECA height and let the wicking do the rest! I hope that makes sense!
Hello! I always sift it first because I don’t feel comfortable putting that much perlite dust into the waterways. If you have grass or outdoor space, you can just rinse straight from the bag but I live in an apartment so I would much rather sift out most of the dust and throw it away and then rinse after. :)
@@rafalz9275 You're completely right! Dust scares me too, haha. I usually sift outside with a mask on. Luckily I don't have to do this very often as well!

Hi Triccie! I'm sorry for the late reply and I hope it's not too late. Off the bat I'll tell you that my track history with thai con's is not the greatest but to answer your questions-
It took about a month to see any roots on my monstera in that LECA perlite moss combo. And I always cover 25%-50% of the LECA just depending how thirsty the plant is. And I actually filled all the substrates and then added the water last! I like to always keep the water line at least 25% for maintenance and I just use a squeeze bottle to water along the edges of the pot to refill it.
