    At those saying 4k is pointless at 27", you clearly haven't used it. Massive step up from 1440p. Also let's say you get 32", you'll just push the screen back more.

      @@hinatashoyo2999 Want 1440p. I dont believe 4k is mature enough. Even 2080ti struggles (and a big NO for using non native res) and, more annoyingly, all the screwed up scaling that occurs with various software when you up the scaling to read text. Thats one beauty of 32" 16:9 1440p, exact same dPI as 24" 1080p, which is the defacto size for fonts and windows. Its not the monotrs fault but the myriad of software that cant be unified. I beleive LG does sell a 1440p 144hz moniotr but the unifomrity is a fair amount worse than the very good 32" 60hz samsung i have.

      Ughh, you don’t want past 28 inch monitors (maybe your thinking TV and couch gaming). My last phone was 1440p, and it looked great at its size. I’d want 8k if your going to 32 inches (if your blind you won’t see the difference, and good news for you, because 144 Hz 1440p will make your wallet much happier!)
      I’ve got 3x 28 inch 4k monitors, I’d go down to 24 inch if I was only gaming on it (single monitor gaming)

  • @Aurummorituri
    @Aurummorituri 5 років тому +5

    Would love to see you review the G-sync cousin of this the XB273K. It’s on sale on a number of sites for $999 USD right now and can do HDR and G-sync at the same time. It also has 3 dimming zones according to some reviews. It does have a cooling fan, but without the FALD and its 100W extra power draw it seems to run at tolerable noise levels. Also a number of Nitro buyers reported hideous backlight bleed. The XB being a true G-sync monitor seems to have a bit better quality control.

    Great review. I bought one of these monitors this week. Your review helped me make my mind up to buy it. I'm using it now. Just a couple of things
    (1) the power on switch is well hidden at the back of the monitor so don't forget to turn the power switch on (press the button) or it won't start
    (2) I have 2 display port cables plugged into (2 x 2080ti NVlink, both cables plugged into same card) and it shows up as 2 monitors in Nvidia control panel. I can't select 144hz mode via OSD or any other way I've tried. It just goes dark and then switches back to 120hz.
    (3) I used this to replace a Philips 40inch 4k 60hz monitor and I'm missing the extra size of everything, especially in Battlefield 1. All the targets are tiny. I switched to 1440p yesterday but everything still seemed small. Except I can see the targets from very far away due to the quality of the monitor but can't easily kill them as they're very far away. Is that last ting a catch 22?
    To be honest I want the old monitor back.

    I may actually have to aquire one of these types of monitors in a few years when they actually become affordable. I won't even look at a new monitor for a couple more years, but when I do I hope these are in a range I can actually justify spending. This price is really not bad at all when you consider what you get, but a couple hundred dollars less would really put it in an area I could consider it. In a few years I think it sounds reasonable that it could be at that level. It really depends on if I can afford a graphics card that can game at this level by then, because current GPU pricing is not encouraging.

    • @cataria3903
      @cataria3903 5 років тому +2

      ha better pray, that they at least keep vesa mounts on monitors, the new upcoming acer 43 inch 144 hz monitor doesn't have a damn vesa mount from the videos i saw, a beyond 1000 dollar monitor, that isn't height adjustable, but has no vesa mount, the worst of all worlds :D
      also stands are cheap especially at this class of monitor compared to the display (without stand), meaning u're not saving much to sell one without a stand, u mean u are in the very very small minority of vesa mounting your monitors and having the original stand also increases resell value, if u ever sell the monitor.
      i would consider bottom tier monitors coming without a height adjustable stand a bigger crime, if u include a stand, make it one that is useful and healthy at least right???

    Good review, Tim!
    They've managed to improve on a lot of things in my view, which makes me hopeful for the future!
    First, the dealbreaker was the active cooling on the original units, glad to hear those are gone now.
    Second, price is obviously much improved and seems fair now. Impressed.
    Third, I couldn't care less about HDR so tbh I'm happy they removed it to obtain a better price point.
    What is still a problem for me is the size. I really want this to be 32". 4K on a 27" panel is just too small for me and it becomes annoying with all the old software that doesn't scale well. Maybe I'm a special snowflake, but no, this isn't working for me.
    Currently using a 27" Asus PG279Q for gaming and a 43" Acer ET430 for 4K. Ideally I'd like to combine the two. Some day.. :)

    @tim I think that you don't get how important is HDR even on Fake HDR monitors. When you enable HDR in both monitors and OS you are in a "color managed environment", this save you from oversaturated colors. so no. HDR is really important even on fake HDR monitors and the fact that XV273K lack the possibility to enable HDR with Freesync is a real disadvantage.

    What's great for me with 4K120 is I could game in 1080p (I won't have the hardware for 4K HRF gaming any soon), & video / photo edit in 4K HDR with the same monitor.
    The other option is to buy 2 monitors, each having the points I mentioned, & it actually could be cheaper (1080p 144hz monitors are dirt cheap now, & 4K are findable around 400$ )

    Did this unit have any backlight blead? I bought the Acer Predator XB273K Pbmiphzx 27, and it had the worst Backlight blead I had ever seen! I was in the market for a 4k 144hz, and that's really all I wanted I didn't need HDR or gsync. Acer had 3 predator models that were 4k 144hz. The x27 for $2000, the Xb273k for $1200, and I think this one for $800 (or one really similar). I saw the reviews on the lower end one and alot of ppl were complaining of Backlight blead so I stayed away from that one and went with the Xb273k. I thought I would save $800 and get a more reasonably priced one. When I got it I all most threw up trying to watch an HDR movie on it, the backlight bleed was so bad it made me nauseous. I didn't buy it for HDR so I played some games on it, it was still horrible! If it was even a slightly dark scene the corners where almost pure white! So I returned it and coughed up the extra money for the x27 because I knew it had local dimming and would have these problems. I like the x27 but it's alot more than I wanted to pay. I got it from the Acer store for $1700 and a 10% off student discount code. So it wasn't the full $2000

    Does this monitor support "black-frame insertion" with freesync?

    • @GF102463
      @GF102463 5 років тому +1

      No monitors support this, and realistically, this is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Consider that adaptive sync technologies will refresh "on demand" or when the GPU sends a new frame to the monitor. Black frame insertion (otherwise known as ULMB) just blacks out the display on every other frame, and the monitor can do this because it has a consistent cadence of when the next frame will be displayed.
      Doing both would basically require the GPU to predict when it's 50% done with a frame which then causes the monitor sync and display a black frame and then when it's 100% done to display a regular frame right then and there, but the problem here is that not every video frame takes equally as long to display.
      Additionally, consider that black frame insertion does literally reduce the perceived brightness, and when you start mixing in variable length black frames with variable length video frames, you could potentially hit game scenarios where the screen is perceived to dynamically darken/brighten depending on your framerate.
      These, among many other reasons, is why ULMB and adaptive sync is a pick 1 situation. Do you want less display persistence but you're ok with screen tearing or reduced screen brightness? Pick ULMB. Do you want no screen tearing? Pick Adaptive sync.

    Using the monitor in 4:4:4 no chroma subsampling with single display port at 120Hz with HDR and GSYNC. To do it you simply need to download the Acer Display Widget and enable HDR from the software, GSYNC and HDR will remain enable with 4:4:4 8bit+frc.

  • @_exilon_

    The G2G average is misleading. This monitor has some very slow transitions which make it smear light colors into grey. Smearing is even worse in Freesync because overdrive is locked to normal.
    You can't use HDR and Freesync and 144Hz together. At best you get HDR + Freesync @ 120Hz by exploiting a bug in the Acer app, but the experience is not good.
    In desktop usage, the dim left and right edge are distracting.
    If you have a Nvidia GPU, I highly recommend going for the XB273K which doesn't have the poor overdrive issues.

    You should do a video on 4x4GB vs 2x8GB ram for the new gen of intel chips they’ve been released (9900k, 9700k etc)
    I’ve seen a few things in the past few weeks thatve made choosing between the two very hard

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 5 років тому

      Well since those chips are due channel only... your only slowing down your memory overclock a ton by stressing the IMC on it and get worse potential when going above the duel channel they can use.
      For Threadripper, quad channel is a must, just like duel channel is a must for most chips, but the 9900k just like it’s low PCIe count, has low/normal memory capability.

    I FUKCING HATE when the marketing says "144Hz" while it's actually NOT native 144Hz, but native 120Hz overclockable to 144Hz. It should be illegal to market the product this way.
    That means not only you are reducing visual quality and lifespan of the monitor, but in adition to that, G-Sync will be limited to 120 Hz max, taking the delta into account to stay in safe VRR range, it means a 115 FPS lock, which often does not align with games that has 30 or 60 FPS animations / physics lock (and sadly there are plenty), meaning the game will be smooth but the animations will stutter a bit constantly. Definitely not the experience you want at that price.
    Also, such a monitor at that price ? Something has to be off somewhere.
    EDIT : looking at Amazon customers reviews, apparently the panel is very bad and has major backlight bleeding problems.

    • @surelock3221

      Why would your max fps be 115? Sorry if it's obvious but I'm kind of new to this

    • @deus_nsf
      @deus_nsf 5 років тому +1

      @@surelock3221 no problem mate, the thing with gsync and freesync, is that they operates within a range, lets say in this case 30-120hz, but to know if you are in the low or high extremity of the range, there is a delta of a couple of frames for frametime calculation, so the module know if it has to operate or not. For example, if you play at 160 fps, the module knows it cant operate and you wont have gsync, if you play at 90 fps, the module knows it can operate so you will have gsync, but if you play at 119 fps, its too close to the high extremity of the variable refreshrate range, so the module will constantly enable and disable, or just simply stay disabled, which results in bad stuttering. So to prevent this you limit the framerate to a couple of frames below, to be sure to never hit the gsync delta :)

    • @surelock3221
      @surelock3221 5 років тому

      @@deus_nsf Jesus I didn't think the modules were that finicky when it comes to detecting frame rates, now I get why some people are super angry about missing out on the last 24hz. Thanks for the clarification!

    • @deus_nsf
      @deus_nsf 5 років тому +1

      @@surelock3221 You mean the latest G-Sync Ultimate modules that starts at 24 Hz ? It's indeed a great thing since it's going to work great from 26-ish FPS, instead of 32-ish FPS with a 30 Hz min module. Since a lot of games are (still sadly) locked at 30 FPS, it often means problems (transitions from single to double the frequency). I know that with Freesync, if your Freesync monitor supports Low Framerate Compensation, you can manually increase or decrease the min range to double the refreshrate and then keep the low latency advantage of VRR (for that you need the Custom Resolution Utility third party software), maybe the same can be done with G-Sync ?
