my thoughts exactly.. if he's so into it.. why take the time? he already explains why in the beginning of the vide.. why the need for an audience? saying one thing, and really still has the need for attention deep down.
I never really categorized your old stuff as 'dance' music, and I don't remember you ever making anything with a '4 on the floor' beat, correct me if I'm wrong. Your electro fused with jazz in the 80's, has been one of my biggest musical inspirations, ever. Either way, you're a legend, cheers
Well back in the day, (the 80s), it wasn’t really categorised as dance music, more Soul, Funk, Electro. But Paul’s early stuff First Light then solo is pure brilliance!!!!🥇🥇🥇🥇
Rain Forest was one of the first dance tracks that really got me. As I child, I remember being amazed how a vocal-less song could be that groovy and catchy. Been a fan since.
No, it is fairly easy as long as you are somewhat musical. Come on. Please. And Paul of course had some "memories" to draw on. I am a guitarist in the first place. But I play the bass and the keys to my music and I programm the drums. You feel or you know what sounds good. Look how Paul recorded the bass and afterwards the "club sounding noises". Simplest music theory. Very similar to the bassline, just a few notes higher. You can give him, or even me, a recorder/flute or any other instrument and within a few minutes we can at least play a simple but musically sounding melody on it. And writing music is theory. Following a pattern. It has nothing to do with being a genius. It's just easier and faster if you already are familiar with it.
I get what you're saying Mr. Hardcastle but......you made what is difficult for others look so incredibly easy 😅 like I can't imagine other dance producers being able to produce a solid beat in less than 5 minutes!
Good Video. You Make Good Music Paul Hardcastle. You Are One Of My Favorite Smooth Jazz Artists Of All Time. It Sounds So Good What You Do In Music I Can't Get Enough Of It. You Will Always Be A Legend In Music. Thank You Paul
PH Is a genius! I'm so thankful to be here when it was released and thankful to still be here now! Thanks PH! I've been in music for years because of you and others! Salute!!!!! Giving your flowers now!
This is what happens as we get older. Stuff can just become less fun and when something stops being fun, that's when you move on to something different.
10 years !!! You are a late starter anyway Welcome to Hardcastles World The one thing is you have a great back catalogue to work through all the way.back to '84
I have to agree with paul on this as I'm very much the old old old school! I really appreciated the sound from mid seventies as a teenager, then into to 80s where music started to change as did my enthusiasm. I'm just glad I had that precious time with such great music but have always been a huge follower of Paul's work as, well he is the master of chill, smooth what ever you to call it. Me I just enjoy a relaxing to the masters music.
Sir Paul-PURE MUSICAL GENIUS, AND A VERY RARE GIFT THAT FEW POSSESS! The POWER OF A CREATIVE MIND will add VALUE AND APPRECIATION TO LIFE, and that's exactly what you do! I can't wait to hear what HARDCASTLE X sounds like! Paul
You truly are an artist who can expand your talents to other styles of music, and not simply be pigeonholed into one format. LOVE your creativity, Paul! Create whatever you want, just don’t stop creating ❤️ Greetings from Fort Lauderdale 🌴☀️👋🏻😁
I wonder how many will remember going to TapeStop, Bluebird or Jiffs record shops, and then Lee Valley Market on Sunday Mornings for the latest releases on the way home from work. My favourite First Light Track (And I have them all still on vinyl 12'') was 'Right or Wrong! ' Thank you for being a massive part of that era Paul! Gimme the 80's back ANYTIME!
In 2004 a friend made me a copy of Paul Hardcastle The jazz masters and I fell in love with your music, later when I got more into iTunes I purchased more albums,Paul’s music is jazzy but different it has something soothing and deep about it,I like jazz with other musicians but I love Paul’s music to relax en enjoy ,thank you and keep your creative soul going to what ever inspires you these days !
Paul, even your cynical doodling sounds amazing. As a kid I always tried to imitate your style by recording bits and bobs off the radio and trying to mix it on my crap boom box into some sort of track. I never understood how the 'magic' worked but had a lot of fun trying it.
Hello Sir, i was born in 1987 and found to your Music in my early 20's and i just wanna say that i was blown away in a positive way! Much Respect from Berlin, Germany.......
Danggit, Paul, I was hoping you would make one more funk album, not necessarily dance music. I'm one of those who have asked you a few times on your Facebook page, hah hah. I love funk, my favorite genre, but I also do love smooth jazz and you were one of the first artists I heard in that genre.
As a youth Paul music featured heavy in our breakdance routines rainforest in particular still beautiful today thanks for the inspiration of an 80s kid
You find it dull, guess what Paul, I'm afraid of breaking something now. Got to old, can't dance like I use to. But you keep making that awesome music I can relax with. Love you much.
Thank you for sharing your behind the scenes. Your always moving forward in your style of music. Keeping the next Generation of music fresh sound and easy to listen to. Bassically getting hypnotized to your music
Hi Paul, your music is amazing you really don't have to change, play and create what you like, it's a great pleasure to listen to your wonderful music❤🎼❤🎼❤🎼❤🎼❤
Yes Paul! As someone who taught himself how to manually cut up old classic funk breaks in his teens, I TOTALLY get where you're coming from. Thankfully Steph and Jimi are still promoting your work in 2024
The thing about one of your most famous tracks is that it was also somewhat a history lesson about the Vietnam war for many on the dance floor. That was genius
OK For those of you who doubt I can't do this sort of music in my sleep. check out this album I did for Pacha a while back ua-cam.com/video/mJyw8rLSWfY/v-deo.html
hello Paul it would be good if you could share with us your fans like me i have been following you since the 85s with what instruments you compose and show us your home studio and especially your favorite synth Thank you for your answer!!
I agree with you, Mr. Hardcastle...one of my classmates introduced me to your music a while back and I've been hooked ever since...when I hear Helen Rogers, Maxine Hardcastle, and Becki Biggins...I go crazy(not literally)...they just get me hyped, thanks to my classmates Anthony Cogman and Yossarian Jackson🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
I'm not a music maker, conductor, or composer, but that doesn't seem or sound boring or dull AT ALL!! You don't appear bored either. It sounds really good to ME.
Your musical IQ is astronomical, the only analergy I can sum up is like the student who gets bored and disrupted in a basic or elementary maths lesson. The only solution is to separate, elevate and move on. By the way sir you have raised an entire generation with your music that has gone on to inspire many more, just to say thank you Paul your an absolute icon 🙏🏾👊🏾
Paul Love Everything You Put Out You Put A New Spin On Jazz It Pulled Me In Thank You Brother GBU And Family Mom May Be Gone But Not Forgotten ( Hit Me Brother Lost My Mom And Dad ) 🙏 ❤ 🇺🇸
Mr. Hardcastle, for you is so easy, for us the listeners, of the 80's and 90's you are a breath of oxigene. Is the first time when I am in your channel, I gonna send the link to all my friends! I am sure all are love to hear again your music. I hope!
Hi Paul, i found your video interesting...i'm a huge fan of dance music, as a chronic pain sufferer, i find dance music as my 'Happy Music' but saying that, it must have rhythm and a good sound. The repetitive stuff, yes, not a big fan but with the black dog (depression) hiding around every corner, i find dance music puts me in a good mood and keeps me going.. I wish more 80s artists would write happy dance tracks that make us feel good... it really does help.. cheers, Michael @ Electronic80s / Soundz80s
When the musicians behind Lisa Stansfield started doing this style back in 89 it was ace. But then the 1990's gave it a faster tempo, called it Dance music and has been milked ever since. Some of it can be fun sure but rather listen to your Fly by Night track on loop. 😊
I started out during my teen years listening to you. King Tut And Rainforest Then discovered your album's before them Now I am hooked on all of your music 😊❤❤❤
Paul, Dance music came a long way since that 90's style you're playing 😆.. not all dance music is simpleton music. You prob only heard bad dance music. Good Dance tends to be more underground/less known.
That was really awesome and thank you. Really good. I saw RMX! Mr. Hardcastle, I was wondering about some of the percussion on Nitzer Ebb that may or may not (?) have been DX7. Been wondering about this for well over a decade. Would love to hear any insights you're willing to share. Have a great day.
Been a while since I watched a PH video but I listen to your chill tracks all the time. As a (very inferior) musician I like to try my hand at various genres and yes, Dance quickly loses any interest after the first couple of tracks :)
I'm a 54 year old lady and I don't know S*1T about music other than I KNOW what I like and I LIKE 80's music so much. Mr Hardcastle, Sir, I truly loved "19" you had me hooked immediately and it made me feel so many things - (I STILL have it on both 7 and 12 inch vinyl) but actually, my favourite track was "Just for Money" - Bob Hoskins and Laurence Olivier really brought extra magic to that fantastic musical masterpiece and I thank you for sharing your talent with us mere mortals x Big hugs
There is plenty of dance music without a 4/4 rhytm :) And I guess the approach is a bit different for this more modern kind of techno you seem to be talking about. It is much more about sound design than about complex musicality. I would say for this more modern minimalstic techno sound design is the most important thing, because if you only got like 5 elements in the song they better be good. To each their own I suppose :)
you might find it uninteresting, but i can't deny i had the impression you enjoyed making that!
my thoughts exactly.. if he's so into it.. why take the time? he already explains why in the beginning of the vide.. why the need for an audience? saying one thing, and really still has the need for attention deep down.
you had a smile on your face the entire time you were making the beats mr. H.
Paul, u are one of my heros. Even if a dance track has that standard pattern, it’s the arrangement on top of it that can make it stand out.
Your music is timeless ❤
Rain Forest was one of the first dance tracks that really got me. As I child, I remember being amazed how a vocal-less song could be that groovy and catchy. Been a fan since.
I never thought Rain Forest was dance music. Back in the 90s when I first heard it, I heard it on a jazz station so I thought it was like Jazz-Pop
Paul… please agree: You had so much fun doing what you don’t like 🤣 You are gifted and please make a dance music album 😃
kinda feel like 'Moving & Grooving' was that album..
19 was still banger
Just for Money, Rainforest, King Tut?
all 👌
I showed the video to young people in Vietnam. They had no idea.......
This isn't easy..... it's easy if you are a genius at what you do.
I was thinking the same thing
Exactly
No, it is fairly easy as long as you are somewhat musical. Come on. Please. And Paul of course had some "memories" to draw on. I am a guitarist in the first place. You may not like making dance music anymore but that sure sounded great! No one does it like the legend!
I get what you're saying Mr. Hardcastle but......you made what is difficult for others look so incredibly easy 😅 like I can't imagine other dance producers being able to produce a solid beat in less than 5 minutes!
It takes literally as long as he took.
Good Video. You Make Good Music Paul Hardcastle. You Are One Of My Favorite Smooth Jazz Artists Of All Time. It Sounds So Good What You Do In Music I Can't Get Enough Of It. You Will Always Be A Legend In Music. Thank You Paul
This guy is FREAKING AMAZING. THE BEATS HE COMES UP WITH TOTALLY BEAT OUT Dr. Dre and more....
Paul, you are and always will be the MASTER at everything when it comes to music. You are so loved! And thanks for decades of music and memories.
PH Is a genius! I'm so thankful to be here when it was released and thankful to still be here now! Thanks PH! I've been in music for years because of you and others! Salute!!!!! Giving your flowers now!
You are a real genius. Whenever you get inspired, please don't quit doing such masterpieces for us. The human race on this era thanks!
Much love to you and Maxine!!! Hed Kandi will never be the same
This is what happens as we get older. Stuff can just become less fun and when something stops being fun, that's when you move on to something different.

I have to agree with paul on this
as I'm very much the old old old school! I really appreciated the sound from mid seventies as a teenager, then into to 80s where music started to change as did my enthusiasm. This Guy is A MUSICAL GENIUS. I WISH HE, ENIGMA AND SADE GOT TOGETHER. THAT WOULD BE A HUGE ALBUM!!
I was just thinking him and Sade would be so good .
Paul, even your cynical doodling sounds amazing. As a kid I always tried to imitate your style by recording bits and bobs off the radio and trying to mix it on my crap boom box into some sort of track. I never understood how the 'magic' worked but had a lot of fun trying it.
"Dance beats leave me cold" ...then continues to groove away to a 4 on the floor beat ! ...go Paul !! .. love your work man ! ....
Greetings from Greece Mr Paul Hardcastle ! I love your song's !!!
Man do you know how many cookouts and family reunions Ive heard Rainforest at 🙌🙌🙌 you def a legend it’s considered a hood classic where I’m from 💪🏾
Simply a genius. This great artist has my respect !!!
This is such a solid beat, could totally dance to this at the club
And it still sounds better than 90 percent of the shite out there! You're the best Paul!
Subjective! 😊
Exactly, at least the melody here has some feel put into it.
Hello Sir, i was born in 1987 and found to your Music in my early 20's and i just wanna say that i was blown away in a positive way! Much Respect from Berlin, Germany.......

Rain Forest and Forest Fire remains my favorites by Paul Hardcastle
Paul made the oppisite to Everything but the Girl, they started jazzy and definitely ended up in electro-dance.
But he’s having fun though… it was wonderful watching this! 🎉
and i want the completed track...he put it all together then left us hanging to hear the completion of his 5mins of work
As a youth Paul music featured heavy in our breakdance routines rainforest in particular still beautiful today thanks for the inspiration of an 80s kid
You find it dull, guess what Paul, I'm afraid of breaking something now. Got to old, can't dance like I use to. But you keep making that awesome music I can relax with. Love you much.
Hi Paul; You look AMAZING! I completely agree and I love you SO much!🥰💜💜💜
It’s freaky how great musicians like Paul have rhythm
Paul, I would do anything for just a shred of your musical insight
I used to listen to Paul in the 80 and specially 19 really miss his music today
Thank you for sharing your behind the scenes. Your always moving forward in your style of music. Keeping the next Generation of music fresh sound and easy to listen to. Bassically getting hypnotized to your music
7:06 wow, that is great! I wanna hear a song of just that haha
I bet he can make many themes for movies!🎉
His music is still amazing even today i love his music and he was way before my time
Hi Paul, your music is amazing you really don't have to change, play and create what you like, it's a great pleasure to listen to your wonderful music❤🎼❤🎼❤🎼❤🎼❤

Get this man to do a Soundtrack for a new Streets of Rage!
Love ALL your material. Whatever you make is magical...you truly are "The Wizard". Well, it's back to the "Asylum" for me. 😁👍
The thing about one of your most famous tracks is that it was also somewhat a history lesson about the Vietnam war for many on the dance floor. That was genius

Mr Hardcastle i still mix on turntables since 1983 and i still mix 2 Rainforests and 2 19.. 😁
This reminds of that BBC interview you done back in the 80's and you said something similar.
I'm not a music maker, conductor, or composer, but that doesn't seem or sound boring or dull AT ALL!! You don't appear bored either. It sounds really good to ME.

Felt the same way Paul and craved something different, fell into 90s jungle and drum and bass and haven't looked back.
This is essentially a master class
Mans really just casually created one of the best dance tracks I've ever heard whilst talking shit. Fucking bravo. This is my new soundtrack
you are the best Paul, so much love from Brazil! you are the best.
Hi Paul, i found your video interesting...i'm a huge fan of dance music, as a chronic pain sufferer, i find dance music as my 'Happy Music' but saying that, it must have rhythm and a good sound. My man said "Loose Ends"! 😍
hilarious! so glad you called out the drops with the snares
That bass line went hard tho 🎉
GENIUS .... easy peasy..banger in a few mins🥸
Such a genius and inspiring musician!
D Train is one of my favorites by Hardcastle. He is my #1 favorite smooth jazz artist of all time.
When the musicians behind Lisa Stansfield started doing this style back in 89 it was ace. But then the 1990's gave it a faster tempo, called it Dance music and has been milked ever since. Some of it can be fun sure but rather listen to your Fly by Night track on loop. 😊
19 changed my life in 1985, I was 8 years old, I have so much respect for you sir.
I started out during my teen years listening to you.
King Tut
And Rainforest
Then discovered your album's before them
Now I am hooked on all of your music 😊❤❤❤
Paul, Dance music came a long way since that 90's style you're playing 😆.. not all dance music is simpleton music. You prob only heard bad dance music. Good Dance tends to be more underground/less known.
Personally I think it's fantastic you segued into the smooth jazz genre with masterful ease.
Best Paul hardcastle track has to be rain Forrest for me. I've remixed this so many times and never fall out of love with it.
Please don't ever stop. 70 years old and I love the ambience. Takes you to a better place.
He's 70?!?
I'm a 54 year old lady and I don't know S*1T about music other than I KNOW what I like and I LIKE 80's music so much. Mr Hardcastle, Sir, I truly loved "19" you had me hooked immediately and it made me feel so many things - (I STILL have it on both 7 and 12 inch vinyl) but actually, my favourite track was "Just for Money" - Bob Hoskins and Laurence Olivier really brought extra magic to that fantastic musical masterpiece and I thank you for sharing your talent with us mere mortals x Big hugs
Got me a collection of his music after Rain Forrest. One of my favorites is Zen Warrior
There is plenty of dance music without a 4/4 rhytm :) And I guess the approach is a bit different for this more modern kind of techno you seem to be talking about. It is much more about sound design than about complex musicality. A solid kick drum and a hi hat is enough to make people move and I think there is something special in that, evoking some part of our tribal brain. I would say for this more modern minimalstic techno sound design is the most important thing, because if you only got like 5 elements in the song they better be good. To each their own I suppose :)
4/4 rhythm and "four on the floor" are not the same thing.
