To celebrate the release of the 4K versions of the Peter Cushing Dalek films, Jon and Gav are joined by the amazing researcher and archivist Rhys Williams, who is bursting with information on the production of this movie. Re-uploaded due to copyright issues with the original release.
I was only seven years old, but I remember being taken to see this. It was a Saturday afternoon and we were home in time for Doctor Who on telly! Happy days 😀👍

Interesting commentary, thanks for uploading. AARU is an acronym for Amicus and Regal Unite and the name was only used for the two Dalek movies. Little bit of trivia; the rock face and tunnel sets were repurposed from 'First Men In The Moon' and not done on location as sometimes claimed.
You will appreciate: the Dr Who films are enjoying a revival season at the Dendy Cinema in Sydney. It was meant to be a one-off special last Sunday but sold out and now it’s a mini-season. Most exciting, most exciting…
So glad the Dendy is still open. I used to live directly across from 'the Valhalla' in the Glebe, enjoyed many classics like 'Dune' and 'Brazil' there for the first time in the eighties.
@@brettsalter3300 Ah, the Valhalla. I lived in Darghan Street for a while and went there often. It’s an office suite now but with the cinema facade and interior lobby layout largely intact. And saw the Dr Who double feature today. Great to hear the audience responses. All ages too!
@@DrZacksCafe Sounds like a wonderful experience. These movies were like a holy grail when I was young, might have seen them once, on the old Astor B/W tv the family had in the loungeroom, some Saturday afternoon. Seeing it in full colour on the big screen would feel like you have transported to the future (as a child at least). No actually, even as an adult!
@@brettsalter3300 it was grand and surreal. The first Dr Who movie played frequently on TV in the 70s but the second I recall was played once and for the first time in the early 80s. It was down to relative violence: Dr Who and the Daleks was okay for afternoon weekend screening but Invasion Earth was not.
@@DrZacksCafe Interesting, I do remember seeing the first movie perhaps twice in the 70's, (on tele) but, as you say, not Invasion Earth until released on video. Your experience of seeing them on the big screen must have been amazing .I remember they had a Hitchcock special some years back and seeing those movies, only ever witnessed on small screens, was so overwhelming. Something as colourful and animated as the Daleks would be akin to an acid trip! Dalek 63-88 does a phenomenal job researching, and presenting. They have made my appreciation/enjoyment of Dr Who, especially the Daleks, increase exponentially.

I first seen this film in summer of 1989 here in the states. It was on CBC, a Canadian channel we were able to catch. It was on late at night, near the end of the broadcast day. This was the first Dalek story I saw. Weird part I was watching Dr. Who since early 80's, as a kid, and they NEVER showed Dalek stories, until about '89 or '90. I got not idea why that was.
These were my favorite Daleks, the 1960's TV ones second. 60's Daleks did have emotions, and personalities, even different voices, something that's sadly became a lost art, and just 'evil Vulcans', now. And they were more intimidating, imo. Collected several "chase Daleks" figures, since I love they were Dead Planet Daleks with just the solar panels on 'em.

All four of those things lack reliable contemporary sources and probably never happened. So I am not sure it's quite the indictment of modern education that you think. It depends if we want kids to study actual history or memorise the mythologised victorian version.
@@mowogfpv7582 They are legends illustrative of those historical figures and their period, and the lack of currency indicates that these figures are no longer seen as important rather than some elevation of the curriculum.

1:12:56 It's a Dalek 'bug zapper'. Back in the late 1980's, where I live, which is a rural, farming community, in the middles of corn and wheat fields, EVERYONE had a bug zapper. The 'good 'ole boys', after a day of work planting and other farming stuff, would spent the evening by relaxing in some lawn chairs, a beer in one hand, some crisps or pretzels in the other, and watch the insects fly into the bug zapper and go kapow like popping corn.
We live in the middle of nowhere, corn fields as far as the eye can see, and and the nights here are dark as hell. Could see why those guys did it.
The Daleks probably did the same with that trap thing....watching Thals and local wildlife getting zapped in that thing, probably giggling like the good ole' boys did. :P

I always liked THIS Skaro more than the TV versions. I also like how it's always dark, never day time, which I always thought was cool. And I do like how the Thals have blue skin, making them standout against the humans, and I do like the Dalek city.
It's like watching an 80s photo comic strip. Great commentary. Can't wait for the next one. 👏👏

The Dalek city, was probably originally a Dal/Kaled city, since we see machines needing buttons, dials and switches to be operated, needing hands with at least 1 finger and thumb to work.
20:58 That even makes the idea more likely, now. City was made for, and originally used by, fairly tall humanoid creatures.
22:50 It was exciting to ME in 1989. I also like how the Dalek's head lights keep flashing as they move about, as if a LOT of energy is flowing through those machines.
29:13 Sadly. In the unaired pilot, Susan was depicted as a very intelligent girl, confident, and with , seeing from the pilot, a dare I say, sensual quality to her. And they totally tossed that into the trash can, making Susan just a screaming teenage girl, to the point Carol left out of frustration.
With regards to the canonicity of the films, I rather like the idea that the Cushing Doctor is an older version of the Metacrisis Doctor who, after a mishap with the Dimension Cannon, finds himself in early 20th century England, along with Rose, Jackie, Pete and Tony. As a result of the mishap, his family help him build a new life, with him adopting the surname Who until he remembers who he is. During this time, he and Rose have a family, which eventually begat Barbara and Susan; names which Doctor Who has a fondness for, but has no idea why. Sadly, Rose, Jackie and Pete pass away overtime, leaving him, his grandchildren, his brother-in-law Tony and his wife, and their daughter Louise. As the 1960s hits its stride, and this is an Earth parallel to the TV Whoniverse, Dr Who begins to tinker with an old police box that had been decommissioned...
I read a nice theory that The Doctor was known in his world as he has saved the planet so many times and that these two films were movies made in his universe to celebrate him.

I think that the out-take had Barrie Ingham quoting Henry V ('Once more unto the breach, dear friends...'), not King Lear. This is a very enjoyable commentary. Thanks!

Wish to see a special edition of the original 1963-64 Daleks serial with certain elements of the movie version incorporated via CGI effects, and in black and white.
This is excellent, can't wait for one about 2nd Movie! Thats's rather under handed of Robert Jewell, offering to train extras at the expense of his fellow Operators!

1:05:24 Well, this tells me that, perhaps, the pipes and the water circulation systems were made before the nuclear war, and for humanoid beings to build that, they'd need to chop out a stairway to place the pipes there. Perhaps this rock face was part of some carved/sculpted structure the locals built, and this is all that's left of it, those stairs. Who know what weathering on a planet in a post atomic horror is like.

This movie got me into doctor who, I loved this movie as a kid.
Re: the "art" and other incongruities in the Dalek city. I think the Daleks have been going insane very slowly over centuries. They have vestigial behaviours they can't explain or even notice. Perhaps analogous to the ticks and compulsions humans exhibit under pervasive unending stress.

Saw this Saturday night at the Movies on BBC
3:00 Why would people complain about the films being juvenile? Here in the US we got our first taste of Dr. Who on PBS (Public Broadcasting) starting with the early to mid Tom Baker episodes. Dark, gloomy, violent, etc. We didn't start with the more kids oriented first two Doctors. We expected this to continue, and it would have, except for he who is not to be named, but always cursed, JNT. Blech. Ptooi.

Does anybody know the true story of whether the Met or the BBC owns the copyright to the police box design? It's turned into an urban myth. Oh, and why there's never been a fully accurate prop. Is that a copyright issue or just a design choice? It's such a beautiful thing. Surely it's nothing to do with not fitting in a lift at Lime Grove these days. (Why do I know all this shit? 🤔)
My introduction to Who. I much, much prefer the TV versions, but these will always be special to me.

Was really disappointed with the TARDIS interior when I saw it as a lad at the cinema.
Me too. I was ten or eleven years old when I saw it and spent a lot of the movie thinking to myself "That's not right" or "That's too silly". I was extremely impressed with the sets, though and even recognised an egg cup on one of the control panels that I still have.
In 1963, I was a huge (and still am )fan of Dr Who. I was very let down by the film Dr who law was thrown out the window. Also, I remember many lava lamps that were being sold in shops way before the movie. Incredible letdown and somewhat silly, it seemed played for laughs; even as a 10-year-old, I appreciated the drama of the TV series.
I first saw both Cushing films in the early 70’s when my local ABC cinema in Luton showed them on successive weekends . I can still remember that they looked amazing on this massive cinema screen, even more so because they were in glorious colour. Unusually for Cushing, he’s not entirely successful as ‘Dr.Who’, although it should be remembered that he was obviously very aware that it was a childrens film, choosing to play the character as a loveable grandad. The TARDIS interior is truly awful, and even as a child I found it incredibly disappointing, although no where near as offensive as the bizarre music, which improved only slightly with the second film. Roy Castle is okay, although I’m not overly keen on the touches of comedy. The Thals are very 1960’s and no doubt were a big influence on Boy George, but the Daleks themselves are the best they have ever looked, at least up until 2005.

Secondly - the UHD version seems to have another 10 seconds or so of introduction not present on the Blu-Ray - which causes a minor timing issue with the commentary.
Thirdly - My only (very slight) observation is that given your prop expertise I was expecting more Dalek prop insights than they were. But perhaps you have said everything there is to say already?

Re. The props. The film rattles along so quick it’s hard to get too involved in any one subject. But you’ll be pleased to hear we’ve just drafted a script that’s specifically about the props themselves

1:06:19 I've always found this shot so strange. It looks almost CG the way it's lit like 90s CGI.
It also looks as though the shoulders aren't properly fitted to the skirt section, which adds to the off-kilter feeling of the shot.
