I understand now that these "walk-walk-side-together" actions make a shape of a quarter turn to either the L or to the R---that is why they call this figure "Quarter Turns"--the most basic of quickstep figures. The Quarter Turns make a form of a letter "V", which will help you greatly when you do the more advanced quickstep figure called the "V-6."
Tip: On the Natural Pivot, the second slow (in the SQQS timing) is the pivot, so contrary body movement needs to happen in the pivot--you need to signal the lady that you are going to do that pivot turn with this shaping. Also known as "the lead."
