Out of all the episodes over the years of the Atheist Experience, in this episode, the call with Mark from Austin, Tx. is probably my favorite. Matt puts it so simply and strait forward, that in my opinion, if any christian listening to it doesn't get some kind of wake up call, then almost all hope if lost for them.
33:00 Mark from Austin Stone... Widely identified here as a troll. Someone in other thread cited ep 726 as the "reveals he's a troll" episode. I just watched it. Thought I'd share it here in case others are interested.
I know that I should be happy that Mark from the Stone Church is a troll and that there is one less person on the planet (Houston) that actually thinks like that, but I have to admit that I enjoy listening to genuine ignorant arguments (and having them shredded). Sure, it makes me feel superior but only because I am. KNEEL before Zod!
Mark isnt a troll, hes more like a product of indoctrination. He isnt rude or arrogant. There is a post-show where the studio audience applauds Mark's change of mind. Ep #705. It is what TAE is all about.
cyco phile I couldn't tell you what episode it was revealed, but Mark is a "fake". He was an atheist calling in pretending that he was a member of that church. Matt apparently met with the pastor (I believe that is the correct title of the "head" of their church). Matt mentioned this when he found out that the pastor had died overseas.
Well, there was one other caller from the stone church I vaguely remember. they claimed to be marks brother or something, so there couldve been a pranker in the mix. Ep 705 makes me think he was serioius about his belief. Id like to know what ep Matt mentioned Mark was a fake...
cyco phile As I stated, I do not recall the exact episode but I would venture to guess it was in the mid 800's. If I run across it again, I will pass it along to you.
Yes it was Ep 726, and in the video descrip. the blog posts are linked. They figure out it was Mark and hes a fake or troll or wierdo or something. Thats the creepy part, they cant really figure out what his purpose was... other than being a multiple personality psycho... scary if you think about his syrupy voice, plus hes from London.
Good point. Flat as a pancake? Duh Drunk as a lord. Sure, I get that. Why figure patience and saintliness (whatever THAT quality is) would corelate? Saints...were often really bad people. So even "as good as a saint" is problematic.
This is so unsettling to me. I live in Australia, South Australia to be exact. People are judged for BEING CHRISTIAN, not the other way around! People kinda softly say they are christian, with a bit of embarrassment. Our last leader of our country was atheist, and we all knew this before we voted. What's up America? Education, education, education! Just saying
Don't blame the teachers for one. There are a lot of hard working educators here. Second, don't assume why people are religious here. There are multiple reasons. And third, extremely educated and intelligent people are religious. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for instance. And several of my family members have advanced degrees and are Christian. Sigh...
Will Ferrell Can you remember which episode has Troll the Troll in? You know, the guy called Troll who calls in to talk about Trolls (the mythical creatures)?
+frankos rooni said just 3 months ago (so: comments not disabled by youtube) I would suggest there is no connection between religiousity and crime. --No connection? Meaning that being religious doesn't keep you from being a criminal? And being atheist doesn't make you less likely (with the "no morals" and all) to be law abiding? With high religiosity AND high crime in the west, that would seem to be the case in the west. Perhaps east as well? idk I don't really know --but in Scandinavia where all other factors are equal poverty is the main cause of crime. -- What do you mean "where all other factors are equal"? Equal amongst those countries? Equal between there and here? Scandinavian countries are vastly different than the west. Governments are more socialist. (Bigger social safety net) People are FAR less religious (presumably more affected by what morality non-theists have). Population smaller. Etc. High contrast with, not similar to, the west. And...what's the main cause of crime in the west? Poverty? Drugs? Capitalism? More TV viewing? American football? Religion seems to neither help nor hinder society in this respect --You are far from backing this up. And, as I've shown, your cited factors might actually indicate the opposite of your thesis. I think this is a fascinating topic -- You disabled comments. So apparently you find only your own ideas about it fascinating. You didn't want to enable a dialogue. Hence this workaround.
Bruce Baker im danish... there isnt really any poverty or crime -_- its just a nice place where people do good things for simple reasons everyday :) its just scandinavia.... you cant really make the comparison as the united stated population and diversity demographic are huge compared to our tiny ancient states....
+Bruce Baker I don't know why I didn't just cite the Bell(?) study. I don't recall the exact name. Survey of Social Wellness in Western Democracies maybe. Showed that, contrary to what many religious folks assert, many negative social indices (rape, violent crime, teen pregnancy, etc.) are actually lowest in the countries whose populations are least religious. And vice versa. America having the worst "social wellness" and about the highest religiosity. To be responsible when citing that, we have to add that corelation does not equal causation. We can't say "high religiosity leads to high crime, etc. But it does pretty well poke a hole in the "can't be good without god" and "a godless society is worse than a godly one" etc.
+Bruce Baker I tripped over this old thread a year after posting. And it occurred to me that the +francos roni comment may have simply meant that being religious or non-religious makes it more likely one will do a criminal act. If so, I agree and my long post was not addressing the original point. Figured I should add that to be fair & balanced.

I ordered 18 pieces of fish 🐟🐠 fried catfish 😋
The 9 most frightening words in the English Language. I'm from a church and I'm here to help.
Isn't that from Reagan, and he used government instead of church?

Yeah - despite the fact that Mark is a known troll, the conversation with him and Jeff and Matt's responses are beautiful.
"i've had my eye on certain body parts of yours for quite some time." lol
Gotta love Jeff Dee
Please, please, please turn up the volume on these old episodes. I cannot understand one word the caller is saying.

I can't believe Mark from Austin managed to troll Matt for so long Without him ever catching on.
I mean his arguments are indistinguishable from your average theist caller. I was surprised he was a troll lol
This is a fantastic episode!
The audio people, the audio... How hard is it to plug in both the red and the black tulip cable?
SadBunny
If only you were there.
why is the sound so low?
"Patiences of a saint" !?!
Let's start saying "Patiences of a scientist" or "Patiences of an atheist"
Good point. Flat as a pancake? Duh Drunk as a lord. Sure, I get that. Why figure patience and saintliness (whatever THAT quality is) would corelate?

Well, they have been waiting a long time for jesus to come back...
Would have been nice to have the audio loud enough to hear
I can hear it
Kevin sounded so sad.

Yep, I’m in Western Australia and I don’t know a religious person, or one who admits it.

Mark the troll episodes:
695, 696, 686, 693

Will Ferrell Thanx for the warning. Hope he finds a gay guy who can fuck the religion out of him. Maybe not! He sounds like he'd enjoy it.
Also 726, the final one (as far as I know).
WOW JEFF
