This is one of the best books I've ever read. My mother suggested I read it when I was 19 and it blew me away. Especially the narrative structure, I love how every time Grenouille leaves a place, Patrick tells the story of what happened to the poor soul who saw his company. Absolutely brilliant.
He reminds me of the audiobook reader who does Brothers Karamazov: who has this indulgent snarky tone that sounds like hes gossiping about the characters hes describing to you. I think its perfect for the stuffy upper middle class setting
I had already watched the movie currently on Netflix and recognized the title. Kurt didn't mention that the fellow was obsessed with the scent of young women and murdered them to capture their essence in a perfume. That is the crux of the story.
Baldini's monologue is so beautifully wriiten. the breakdown and bargaining with the self of a man who knows he's a sham, to then going on to mock his competition, who was already superior to him by saying anything and everything he could think of against him, because deep down he knows he can never be like him, is beautiful. the way Suskind puts forward the patheticness and narrow-mindedness of people is truly unmatched
My most scentcere gratitude to the uploader. What a piece of virtuoso use of language. Wish only Süskind had put his literary genius into the service of a nobler cause than a history of a murder, see eg the examples of John Milton or Duke Ellington.
I don't know who Kurt is but I'm glad to be here! ^_^ I've loved the movie since it first came out but haven't had a chance to read the book yet, just found it on UA-cam and can't wait to get into it ^_^
@Easy guitar oooh I am glad he inspired people to come here then :) I have always loved the movie since it first came out which is how I learned about the book, it's soooo good!
PERFUME is such an interesting story and the narrator of this audio version is ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT. Thank you very much ----- Icethug209 ---- for uploading and sharing it.
This is my favorite novel of all time. I lost my well worn first edition at some point along my inadvertant stummbling through life. The uncontrollable drive, raw intensity, sensual passion, base and beautiful!
I recommend listening and reading at the same time, especially if you need to remember quotes. I don’t know if it’s just my book, but some of the lines a misquoted (I think). Generally a good recording, though:)
Thanks you for uploading. I've read the book twice and watched the movie twice. The english audiobook is almost impossible to find or buy in the US. I'll still keep searching for CDs or a downloadable version that I can buy. But in the meanwhile, thank you.
we also have a downloadable version you can purchase for all of the parts. Feel free to email me at imaadghazali1@gmail.com to continue our conversation.
Kurt cobain sent me here after a dream i had about him last night,i was sitting infront of him,Kurt, with a weapon in his hand, sitting across from me looking down, looked up slowly, eyes full of pain , began a conversation with me - i cannot remember...when i awoke, it felt all too real, so , i got on youtube looking for his last few interviews, and the first one i came across began with mention of this book,i guess i will see what becomes of this...the last book recommended to me by someone from beyond the grave was the life of pi,my best friend had this book in his possesion when they found his lifeless body,he was 25 years old,so was i...that book taught me a few things,im now 38,perhaps this shall too...also, the uploader uploaded this 3 days after my birthday, 3 happens to be for me, a number of importance !
I had a similar experience recently and was led here as well... Maybe we're being led to something hidden, a Truth that needs to be revealed? Maybe there's even more than the insanely obvious lie to be discovered here....?
I am teaching this text in class, Advanced Fiction Writing. Even in translation, this work is a masterpiece. Fantastically well enlivened in this reading.
Thats strange, in the german original it says great-grandfather.. At the time of this book the french king was Louis XV, his predecessor and great-grandfather was Louis XIV, the "sun king".
You know, there are only 5 basic human tastes but thousands and thousands of scents and other olfactory sensations. I remember, too, reading somewhere that when we smell something, we're really just tasting it with on a more sensitive and complex level. With that knowledge, enjoy your next stroll by a summer's dumpster or your visit to the can after some sweaty, unhygienic beast with a terrible diet has preceded you.
Thank you to Kurt Cobain, for recommendation. Hope you are resting far from your own mind demons and gut wrenching addictions, and you feel pure happiness wherever you are 💛💛💛 Peace Love and EMPATHY

Totally agree ❤
I really like the way he reads the book. It's like he's reading a fairytale or bedtime story.
Good luck sleeping
Exactly my first thought! This style of writing also reminds me a little bit of Oscar Wilde and Mary Shelley. It’s quite refreshing.
He reminds me of the audiobook reader who does Brothers Karamazov: who has this indulgent snarky tone that sounds like hes gossiping about the characters hes describing to you. I think its perfect for the stuffy upper middle class setting
