    Love this. Two other players might have eventually broken into a less adventurous, more standard reading of this song. Of course, not these guys :-). We should expect the unexpected from Bill & Julian. No comfortable resolutions. Instead- their unique sketches of Days of Wine and Roses. What an utterly sublime, deeply musical conversation.

    is this masterful or just a fart-about. of a half-memory glitch, of a part remembered song, that each is pushing and pulling
    trying to help recall important phrases, knowing they know the out line of the song but not the tempo,
    and each being obstinate a musician he keep's to his own idea of the correct pace
    but... it's as if they'd only heard it on the way to the show, so it's kind of still fresh in each memory
    as when they were stuck in that traffic, and the window was open for air, and it's melody was on some other cars radio.
    so all the talking was done in the cab, and a mini hummed rehearsal was done there in advance.
    so at the gig they just step into this tune as a warm up jam, to pin that fat lady memory to the floor for all.
    I imagine the car and the radio and maybe a buxom chilling lass tapping out the rhythm on the wheel
    and the turn of their conversation after that glancing moment.
    maybe it was too to much to ask even of their undoubted genius
    for the flesh keeps on falling of the bone of this tune and it doesn't feel quite right.
    to my ear. it's defiantly a strange flavour, a something that is acquired.
    while that audience in that room... this is their taste, even if maggoty green and writhing
    they know their in for a treat even with it raw and somewhat odd
    just a warm up yeah warm it up it'll be ok..

    • @tgrimes175
      @tgrimes175 2 роки тому

      @@nitroxsam66 , no they didn't. Half way through is the only place where you could hear a HINT of the tune, which is not playing the tune. The half way point you are referring to had dissonance added with added chords, it was also filled with 100s of unrelated melody note (filler material) woven in between the hint of the melody line. This was an arrogant , too good for their own good, performance that butchered a beautiful tune.

    • @bisamkiez
      @bisamkiez Рік тому +1

      This is jazz improvisation, the kind where improvisers chose to take more liberty and treat source material loosely. Very, very common practice in jazz. Like, almost every jazz great from 50’s till now would take liberties like this on occasion. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is not shocking nor suprising to jazz fans.
