    Good first reaction! I think you'll enjoy the rest of the series, there's something in here for everyone to sink their teeth into. The animation is consistently lovely, as is the voicework and music, and the characters grow on you really fast. No spoilers, but you're correct in assuming there's way more nuance to Nai and Vash's conflict than meets the eye. They represent the extremes of their respective ideologies, but they make you see where both characters are coming from and how neither are both wholly right or wholly wrong. Looking forward to your thoughts on future episodes, you bring a very thoughtful viewpoint to your reaction and your theories just after watching the first episode are v intriguing. 👀

      thank you! i can tell there's going to be a lot to love and a lot to dissect in this show, so it's good to hear that i'm already on the right track. and i'm glad that my sincerity and thoughtfulness comes through; i wavered on whether or not i wanted to make vids of myself watching this show because i have so much dislike for the ''reaction''-style videos that are just some guy shouting and swearing at the camera for views & have nothing valuable to offer, so i really hope that my analyses add a new layer of insight or a new line of thought to the episode. - bryn

    I bit the bullet and binge watched this show after it’s final episode aired - though in truth, so many of the people I follow are into Trigun that I knew most of the story just through my Timeline on Twitter. Watching it, for me, was just to see all the blanks filled in so I could know what everyone was talking about without getting confused. And what I found was a show with a lot of heart that I had somehow just elected not to watch because I just…didn’t want to watch it at the time? I’m not sure. But it’s wheedled itself into my brain now and I’m so excited to see other people potentially fall in love with it too.
    Vash is one of the few pacifist characters I can’t find myself getting annoyed at. There is a long line of ‘doesn’t want to fight until they get their cool moment’ characters that I tend to just…eh. Don’t hate them, but do get annoyed by them. But something about Vash just clicked with me better. Maybe it’s the fact that he doesn’t go from ‘AAAAAAA IM SCREWED’ to ‘NOW YOU’RE GONNA DIE’ when it comes to his big moment in this episode. He still gets to be cool while also retaining his earlier behaviors!

      It's because Vash's pacifism comes from a truly genuine and loving place, and he doesn't do it to preach at anyone. The only time he speaks his standpoint is when pushed. "I'll run, and I'll keep running, and when they calm down, I'll settle by their side again," is probably the single most pure statement that summarizes who Vash is, and why he's so damn amazing.

    Please tell me you'll watch the dub lol Trigun is always seen as best in dub, unlike other anime. It's why people were going to boycott it entirely if the original VA, Johnny Yong Bosch (who also plays Nero from Devil May Cry, among other awesome characters), didn't get to reprise his role.
    His legacy is so important that he was allowed to completely adlib in this if he wanted.

      i've been watching the dub too actually! recording with sub makes the editing process easier, but i'm usually getting my prescribed dose of JYB Vash Noises right after I watch a subbed episode

    I like your thoughts abt driving towards ideals as a way to keep society/our morals/integrity together, re: pacifism and writing pacifist characters.
    It came to mind that one could take that, the driving to perfect ideals, and compare it to gravity, like how gravity keeps us all on the planet's surface. Then the argument "why aim for an unattainable ideal? just get rid of it" becomes something like "why do we need gravity at all? we'll never survive at the planet's core, just get rid of it and we'll all live in comfortable zero-G". Our morals are a structure as fundamental to our survival as gravity is. We need it as an anchor so we can relate to other things that live on the Earth's surface. Falling into the dirt could be compared to failing to live up to our ideals - both of these give us information, whether that's about our body's limits or about something subconscious in our hearts. I'm sure there's more in that idea but I'm just using your comments section to blab now orz

    This is a nice way for me to watch / read Trigun so I am eagerly anticipating your next episode :) your insights are meaningful and your engagement w the show makes the video feel impactful. Also your look is classic and your editing style is fun and not obtrusive! The audio is a little unclear tbh so maybe some sound dampening would help you if you wanted to speak up / raise your mic gain. That's just an amateur recommendation though and the sound was still comprehensible. Ty for sharing!

    • @breadondeck
      @breadondeck  Рік тому +1

      yeah hehe I realized that the sound levels aren't great when I was editing. my sibling was asleep in the room across the hall when I was recording so I was being quiet on purpose, but I will make sure to speak up next time! - bryn

    Hey since I'm also the second commenter, I'm gonna pick your brain. Where else could sci-fi/fantasy stories come from so they quit looking quite so similar to star wars / dune / star trek / these kind of classic scifi? Like the Bone graphic novels draw on european traditions more than USA traditions, could a story like this (pacifist with a superman origin on a violent hostile alien planet) develop from some other roots? I could think of a few ways to frame that but you're the You Tuber right now and I'm interested in your ideas too!

    • @breadondeck
      @breadondeck  Рік тому +1

      good question! I think the best way to distinguish sci-fi aesthetically is through which culture and/or time period informs it, and also how much the setting informs or is necessary to tell the story. when you start to pick apart elements of space westerns, you get an ouroboros of japanese-american influence because many western films were so heavily based on postwar samurai films, and then star wars was born from the western and stole everything from dune and threw generic east asian influence back in the mix again. but there are so many different strains of east asian sci-fi that are completely different from a space western or a samurai film, such as the flourishing chinese sci-fi scene (known as 'silkpunk') with distinct concepts and aesthetics not found in western media because it approaches the genre of sci-fi from chinese antiquity instead of the star wars mashup of 70s america and the hero's journey with some 1950s and 1800s japan thrown in. star trek is a whole other thing, more focused on projecting an image of what the future and future technology might be instead of drawing so heavily on historical elements, so with that you get a 'purer' form of straight science fiction instead of a space western or a space fantasy. & dune is a whole other thing, focused more on politics and religion on a massive timescale, influenced mainly by middle eastern philosophy and aesthetics and distinguished by analog tech instead of computers. the visuals of the villenue movie reflect the grandiose scale of with massive space structures and go to huge lengths to avoid the shiny futurism associated with trek-style sci-fi because computers are dead and tech has developed along a completely different route. i think silkpunk stories and dune 2021 are able to offer a more distinct aesthetic variety because the worldbuilding started from antiquity and branched into tech and a new setting far different from our world, instead of just taking things from recent history and developing them into a hypothetical future or alternate world.

      @@breadondeck you know I have seen dune 2021 and enjoyed it quite a bit!! I'm intrigued by silk punk now, I hadn't heard of it specifically. I had seen Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon before and I think there was a chinese author on tumblr that's made it big with a scifi book series? Idk exactly. But I think you're right about the media that inspires the scifi - I think I'll be chewing on different scifi inspiration media for a while now, like old greek and roman stories or something from old european fairytales.

    I ended up here just looking for some Trigun reactions, and I enjoyed it.
    And based on what you said, If you really want to know Vash better and see his ideals really challenged I 100% recomend reading the manga. Satmped is a great and interesting reinterpretation. But the Manga is just Better. Character wise specially.
    I personally like the three Trigun Products in this order: Managa>>Stamped>>The 98 Version. But all Trigun is good. So If you like it, watch it all 😌
    Also... Is it ok If I say you are really cute? 🫣
