      Great stuff and great review. I have two questions. Can you make a video about your post production sharpening progress? I set up my mavic with your settings (exp etc.), works good but my gimble did not stop smooth like yours, any idea? best regards from germany and keep up the good work. Julius

    I build a landing pad out of hardboard, and added hinges with pop rivets. Painted in white and yellow with the typical "H" pattern. I like it because it is solid, and not fabric - nice on rough surfaces. Also helps protect the camera and gimbal workings by keeping sand down on takeoff and landing.

    Exception - 160m RTH is the ascent altitude to which the drone will achieve before RTH. If the drone is above the 160m upon RTH command, it will return at its present altitude.

    I use small G-Clamps slipped through and tightened around the pad loops where the stakes go. The weight of the metal clamps keeps the pad grounded and it's really great when you are on a surface that the stakes won't go into like concrete, or very hard frozen ground, snow etc

    Hi Ed,
    Thanks for the demo! I really enjoy your stuff. I was watching your videos weeks before I got my Mavic, so I felt pretty familiar with it by the time I got it.
    As for this landing pad, when I first saw them in videos, I thought they were a little gimmicky, until I was flying where there was no clean spot to take off and land. Besides the distinct pattern for precision landing, I feel the most important function is to prevent blowing dirt and dust up into the motors and gimbal.
    Like some watchers mentioned, I too was concerned about the props hitting the stakes, especially where the ground is hard and it is difficult to get them all the way down. I only use them if it's windy enough to blow the pad away, and my solution is just using one stake on the upwind side. If I can't get it all the way into the ground, I put it in at an angle so I can get it below the props.
    Thanks again!

    Could have done with one of these today when I launched from a rough spot. I ended up hand-catching it. My only complaint is that the pack this product comes in is almost as big as the little rucksack I bought to carry my drone in. It literally doubles the amount of gear I'd have to carry. Great vid though, thanks for putting this together.

    Both drones do not use VPS and hence do not take an optical visual position. Both use GPS for positioning that has a inherent error on purpose. The landing pad in this case is to protect the lens and not for homing.

    Hi Ed, great video (as usual). Using a Mavic -I have been using that same pad for about 2 months. The reflective tape doesn't stay in place vey long. If you are going to need it for night operations I would wait to put it on until you really need it otherwise it will flake off. Even with the landing pad I still always fly with landing gear extensions for the extra clearance

    I've been using this pad for some time. Don't use the pegs. I've never had it blow away. Rick from Drone Valley agrees. Rather have it blow away than have a prop strike.
    Really appreciate the comparison. It substantiates what I believed.
    I fly the Mavic and the gimbal is so close to the ground that I feel a lot safer using the landing pad.
    Thanks.

    I was recently at Imaging USA in Nashville last month and saw someone selling a weighted down version of this one so you would not need to stake into the ground. Obviously the drawback is carrying around the extra weight but if you are not on a long hike it may be something useful for quick takeoffs.

    I just use a waste piece of wafer board (2 x 2 roughly) with cheap black acrylic paint for an image. Keep it in the trunk of my car. The rigidity of the board conquers all terrain, and the weight means no stakes, so set up time is 0

    It's going home only by GPS. The sensors don't 'look' down, they can't. They only measure the distance to an object (in this case the ground). The landing pad has absolutely no influence at all in finding the home spot.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  3 роки тому

      However there is a bottom-facing camera with enough resolution to make out objects on the ground. If you take off and hover around 15-20 feet for a few seconds, it enables that camera to create a precision landing image of the ground and increase the chance that it will successfully land on the pad.
      If you hook up the Mavic to the DJI Assistant on a computer via USB, you can calibrate the sensors and see that camera in action.

    Thanks for the video, it makes me feel better about the one I ordered earlier this week, I was debating whether I should spend the 15 dollars, but since the place I ordered from had free shipping and no sales tax (since its coming from China) I figured sure why not. So I have the landing gear, but it's a pain to keep putting the landing gear back on and off since I don't have a case that supports storage with the landing gear on.
    I guess once I become a pro I can hand launch and land. ;)

      Hey, sorry for taking so long to reply. I think they're for helping to illuminate the pad by reflecting the light from the drone's arm lights. That way the drone can actually use its camera to land on it, as opposed to being completely dark. That's my theory anyways!

    Hey Ed, quick question for you. Nothing to do with launch/landing pad. I have been foaming you for a little bit now. I have the Mavic Pro, today was flying it and tried to record and it said my cache was full. I changed out my SIM card with a brand new one, and sill said cache is full. I think I found in the setting that I can change it from I think 200 my to 16gb? I don't recall and not looking at it..
    Anyway, so how does one clear the cache? Does this mean the SIM card (original) is not full?
    Thanks in advance.

      Hey Daniel, I don't ever have my video cache actually active, but I'm pretty sure you can turn it off in the DJI Go App settings menu and then the "..." icon which should give you some miscellaneous settings. Video cache option is there, experiment with turning it off if you don't want things saved to your display device.

    Cool Video, thank you bro! Is it possible to take the Pad, with me and walk with the drone?
    I want to walk behind the drone in the forrest. But every time the battery is running out, the drone return to the starting point. But i want to walk round about 20 Min away from the startingpoint. I am lost, a i am a newby. 🙈thanks

    Why use metric if we live in America? Most of us don’t really do metric

    Why didn't you do a before and after landing comparison on the pad?

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  7 років тому

      Before and after what? I landed with and without it.

    • @jogforfitness
      @jogforfitness 7 років тому

      Ed Ricker Vlogs When you took off without the pad/then landed you showed a photo comparison of where the drone launched and landed, then toggled it back and forth to see the difference. It would have been fun to see the same when you launched and landed on the pad. Just to see if the accuracy was better with or without the pad. Didn't mean to sound critical. I very much enjoyed the video!

      oooh gotcha, I just assumed the center of the pad would be the beginning point reference, but thanks for the critique! I enjoy understanding what people watching my videos want to see, helps me out with future videos. Thanks!

      @jogforfitness 7 років тому

      Ed Ricker Vlogs You're right. The center was sufficient. For some reason the visual of the non pad comparison stuck in my head to where I was expecting the same with the pad.

      @@EdRickerVlogs sure looked to me like you were setting up a tent. Tent stakes go straight down. Landing pad stakes go in at an angle so props don't hit the top of the stake.

      Lol well more technically it'd be Pee-Gee-Why-Tech then...but I've heard people pronounce it "Pietech" on other UA-cam reviews and thought it was a hell of a lot smoother to say. haha!

    The reflector tape is useless Once you fold and bag it comes off :( For the price They could have attached it permanently :(

    Just use a old camping mat, cheaper, bigger and durable. Uneven land equals uneven mat, and translates as a gimmick for those who buy into the illusion of awesome. Hard to imagine the price people will pay for the image, when it costs about one buck to manufacture.

      Because Bebop2 lands harder than most drones this also help absorb the landing.

    Also cheaper if you buy a generic photographic reflector rather than a customised one with a big 'H' on it - this is the one I went for... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272306532087?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

    “Flying after sunset”. Umm that’s illegal

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  4 роки тому

      You can legally fly a drone recreationally at night. It's only commercial operators that need to get proper authorization via a waiver. If they do that, then it's not illegal for them either so...
      Also it was not too windy to fly a drone, these drones are pretty capable you know.

    Thanks for sharing Ed. I own one of these landing pads. I've used it to take off on snow and sand. It also works well if you are taking off in tall grass. I usually pack it with me but it depends on the surface on whether I use it or not. I've also used the floor mat from my car in a pinch. Subscribe to Ed's channel but be aware the giveaway items belong to me since I've been a member when he was a nobody lol. Just kidding Ed.
