I wonder if this would fit over a blackstone 17”? Sometimes I want to cook some drum sticks or bone in chicken breasts. That’s the only downfall to the blackstone. But I’m thinking about taking the griddle off and sitting this in place. 🤔

That is a downfall. Others are the build quality, or lack thereof, and utilization of cheap components.
I have a Blackstone and a 3 burner camp stove. This, the griddle and the camp stove is the best combination. The Blackstone is headed to the curb.

I have one of these and have found it impossible to cook any kind of fatty meat - burgers , chicken quarters etc. , without major flare ups . There's just too much heat too close to the food . Not as bad turned all way down to low but then cooking times are way longer . His sales pitch is total BS .

What's the difference with the bbq box vs the hinged box other than temp thermometer and vent. Does anyone recommend one over the other and for what reasons?

I have the hinge & it has a big open gap along backside that makes it so my little fires don’t go out faster. I would get the unhinged.

Why not just buy a small gas bbq?

Because you can also put a skillet on the burner, or a stockpot, or a griddle, or a kettle...its an accessory to the burner setup, not something you would buy in tandem only for grilling.
