Happy Friday! (almost made it, ALMOST!) Here's this week tutorial covering concept sheets and how to make good ones. I've seen so many problems with those I've reviewed - this topic recommendation seemed like an obvious video to make, so here it is! Most of this is basic stuff like I mention in the video, but make sure you do ALL of it or your concept sheets will be cursed. Also, free brushes this way and everything on Cubebrush is 20% off until Monday *hint* *hint* cbr.sh/i3ozi Have a great weekend!! Or not, but try at least.
I finished college really late(like half way through my 20s) and all these information made me realize that my degree taught me very minimal. I'm currently still on the starting line and these vids not only helped me push on but actually made me improve. Thank you so much
I'm currently creating a portfolio for a school and just needed this ;-; you're always reliable. Can you maybe do a video about how to come up with ideas for details in a concept or in a drawing in general?
This tutorial is amazing! This is not only a good portfolio character tutorial but, how to make a good OC character sheet tutorial IMO. This tutorial give me inspiration too. 😍
Useful tips, Marc! That was the part I was struggling with which also affected my designs in the end. I know what my sheets will need to look like now, so I can create better pieces.
ive been drawing for a while now, and around the time i was 12 i stopped considering art as a potential career path, but your videos genuinly make me think i can be good enough to at least try it out! thank you so much marc, every time i see your cheesy intros i smile a bit more :)
Peculiar that you had stopped considering art as a career at 12. Most people do that when they’re young adults, since that’s when most formal education programs end. At 12, you still have a lot of time to improve and catch up. For example, Marc Brunet himself said that he improved the most from 16-17 years old.
The fact you worked at Blizzard and give us the information about how to get to gamedev makes me click the like button before I watch the video! Your channel definitely should have more likes and views. Also, I saw people who make character concepts using photos, what do you think about that? I know when you work in the industry you often just don't have time to draw everything from zero, but how about those things in portfolio?
This video is all i was lookin for - huge amount of top notch knowledge for free and camera zooming on butt, while saying the word "but". 11/10, thank you Marc!
can you maybe make a tutorial about the mechanical parts? I watched your 3 tips video but i have no clue how to start a visual library. Love your Tutorials they helped me a lot.
This is so useful for my Commission reference sheets! I always wondered if there were tricks to it, and these tips immediately clicked for me. I have no idea how i missed this video back in the day, but i’m glad i had one to watch now since i’m up to date with the youtube art school haha (its so helpful that these videos are ‘bite sized’, they are perfect for when i want to learn but don’t have the mental clarity for an actual lesson 😊)
Hi, Marc! I'm a 17 year-old student that are pursuing art for my career and I still have a lot of questions, for you and all other older/longer students of yours. No. 1) What should I do when I receive my first commission? What should I expect from it? No. 2) I've been watching your videos in hope to improve my art, and hopefully get into the school I want. The problem is, I had always been confused to how you tint the black and white shading you've been teaching. Did you shade them on the same layer? No. 3) Flat colors, and this is one of the most useful things you've taught me so far. Did you put all your flat colors on one layer? I've made a few mistakes when I first followed your videos and colored them on different layers, I'd like to know/make sure if you use it on the same layer. No. 4) Although I know how to draw lots, I'm still having a "Same-face-syndrome" or I'm just afraid to draw men. I've been watching and re-watching your videos to embrace them, but it just seems like I can't get ahold of the anatomy. No. 5) And this is one to your subscribers, who use Medi-Bang, hopefully. I've bought Marc's starter brush and it seems like I can't use them, can someone please tell me why? No. 6) What kind of program do you think is best for a long-term artist? Medi Bang had been good but it is starting to annoy me with its frequent freezing. I'm weighing between Clip Studio and Paint Tool Sai, which one do you think will be better in terms of price and the benefits for long term artist? That's all from my question 😅 I'm so sorry that I have so many questions, which I also have rambled in, but I am getting better at my arts thanks to you. Anyone who have answers to my questions, please comment it. I inspire to be an artist and I hope the answers can help me. 🥺Thank you.
Thanks Marc, you always inspire me, glad I opened UA-cam. Didn't feel like drawing anything today but I'm in a totally different mood now after this video 👍
Really want to get into 3d modeling to bring character ideas ive had to life and possibly animate them to, drawing would definitely help but it might be very difficult for me because i have unsteady hands, which at times can become shaky Still will give it a shot if i get the chance, i have so many concept ideas id love to see come to life or even just drawn
Hey Mark if we apply cv to big studios like blizzard and other studios game , are we need degree of college before ? Or Can you make Content about the myth of art studio industry.... As always thank you for your reference sheet it's very good 👍
You forgot to talk about ANATOMY…..your characters can be rendered insanely beautiful and it means nothing if your anatomy out of wack or looks wrong…check your anatomy and know your anatomy especially if its human or animal or creature…keep your anatomy in mind always because its easy to get lost in painting and rendering etc…
lol its the second time i watch this video and just now i realize it was grasseti that made the 3d model Everything this man touches is just pure gold lol (also the design was already fire)
What's your opinion about showing iterations in the final design sheet? Because there's another former Blizzard concept artist that REALLY hammers home the idea of showing a couple iterations as possible in your final sheet.
If it’s the final design sheet it’s meant as instructions to the next artist so definitely no iterations, but if it’s a portfolio piece meant more as a pitch rather than final design, then hell yeah those make great additional sketches
How to use the mixer brush for Photobashing? Great video as always btw, and just when I needed it the most, got an Assignemnt for class this week that we have to finalize a prop concept and make a presentation sheet haha
in my case I want to orient my art to comics or video games of the Darksiders or jak and daxter style In my design palettes I make a small section with 3 to 5 expressions of the character I am portraying I guess that's fine rigth ?¿
I know this would be more adept below the last video, and I am not sure if you have made a video about this, but could you explain what brushes (if possible in detail, not everyone uses adobe products, but no biggie) you use for lineart, painting, shading etc? I want to get back into digital drawing/ painting and I am a little overwhelmed with the possibilities. What brush do I use to layer and shade? is this great for lineart? do I antialias now or later (mostly important if you use the fill command and in animation, if I recall correctly), and that would be an immense help. I used to use PhotoShop, but after my student license ran out I didn't want to renew my license and discovered Clip Studio, but the brushes work differently, compared to photoshop and more like SAI. I am looking for tutorials in clip studio, but I enjoy your style and way of tutorials since the "colour a character" video with the biking char 6 years ago.
i want to know a little more about the test at Blizzard. How much time did they let you? what did they request you to do and if there is also a test for illustration?
u should do a HOW TO DRAW MONSTER HANDS (if you havent already) Do some like amphibian hands, scaly hands, or furry ones.... (no that last one isnt not a suggestion to do furry fan art.... i want to get better at drawing Worgen claws)
Hey Marc do you do any online courses that you review work and teach on? I'm learning to draw but I struggling on what and how to learn without a more direct course
hi! really helpful video, i will keep in mind all the info included here. do you possibly know if i can use fonts from the internet in my concept sheet?
Hey Marc, I couldn't help to notice that Grassetti did the 3D model for your concept sheet, did you have the chance to meet him? I love your content and both you and Grassetti are big inspirations for me so it was really cool to see your character sheet turned into a 3D model made by Grassetti! Also thanks for everything you teach
Hi Mariana! We were both working towards making it in the industry at the same time so we’ve known each other for years. It’s a relatively small industry 😉

Hello Marc, hope you are well
Your videos are amazing!
Can you do a video like this one but for visual development portfolio?🙏, please
the drawing school has translation into portuguese?, i'm brazilian and i don't have a lot of art courses or schools, and you are amazing
Are you still doing Portfolio reviews?
The vid ends with 'subscri.....'
I saw the thumbnail saying "Don't do this" pointing to the knees and my first thought was no more knees!
Haha me too
As a student who's wanting to become a concept artist, this here is one of the most important thing I needed to know. Thank you, Marc. Very cool.
It's been hella helpful. Im thinking of practicing a bit more and do concept art for an indie game to get my portfolio filled
00:07 you literally broke my eyes
I finished college really late(like half way through my 20s) and all these information made me realize that my degree taught me very minimal. I'm currently still on the starting line and these vids not only helped me push on but actually made me improve. Thank you so much
Yea, I'm in the same boat. The degree proved to be nothing but a piece of paper. I'm trying to work hard on my portfolio as well
I'm currently creating a portfolio for a school and just needed this ;-; you're always reliable. Can you maybe do a video about how to come up with ideas for details in a concept or in a drawing in general?
I come here as fast as I can to learn more.... I'm on time for class

This tutorial is amazing! This is not only a good portfolio character tutorial but, how to make a good OC character sheet tutorial IMO. This tutorial give me inspiration too. 😍
I always feel so lost when it comes to setting up myself as a character artist, your videos always give a lot of helpful tips:D
Marc: *Breathes*
Video: "guess I'll explode"
Useful tips, Marc! That was the part I was struggling with which also affected my designs in the end. I know what my sheets will need to look like now, so I can create better pieces.

There was nothing in the beginning...
Then the explosion happened and
*Hey, Im Marc, an art teacher, a professional artist...*
The fact you worked at Blizzard and give us the information about how to get to gamedev makes me click the like button before I watch the video! Every time I'm trying to learn and search how to do something art related, you always have a video for it lol. You're brilliant
Always love your arts Marc :)
I just woke up and I'm still tired but
I have to watch this✨
can you maybe make a tutorial about the mechanical parts? I watched your 3 tips video but i have no clue how to start a visual library. Love your Tutorials they helped me a lot.
the cut out at the end always got me lol though i already subscribed man. thank you for the informative video!
Model by RAF? Damn my fav 2d arist and fav 3d artist worked together at some point!
Digital illustrator, full-time freelance here. Subbed. Great video!!! Looking into concept work lately. This is quite informative!!!

You're welcome but first thing you have to learn is nobody's gonna read and answer all that for free. Sometimes you get lucky.
Ion know how you do it but you always post the right videos when i need it the most
Thanks Marc, you always inspire me, glad I opened UA-cam. Didn't feel like drawing anything today but I'm in a totally different mood now after this video 👍

Omg, this is literally what I was searching for yesterday! Thanks Marc ^_^

Bro your videos are helping me a lot, thank you!
Um I'm not sure I'll be an artist but your videos are still helpful.
PogU
everything can wait but art! I must watch!
for 3d artists flattened images you need to get more references, but for fake 3d concept you can feel the depth
Thank you for taking the time to create this amazing video which help me so much 💖
"Babe wake up, new Marc Brunet video just dropped."
Thank youuuu!

Woah, your art test concept was 3D modeled by Grassetti himself. Kind of a Big bang of great artists. :o
Pretty informative. Good to know. Thank you again :) stay safe you too
I've never been this early before
You win the first comment award this week, well done 🏆

I guess that's fine rigth ?¿
Can u make a video about blending?
Useful to know for my own personal works. Looking to be more indie than be part of someone else's company.
and remember 3D modellers will love you if you do orthographic turnarounds
If the 3D modelers need that much information they should get better instead of requesting so much work from the 2D guys 😆
I know this would be more adept below the last video, and I am not sure if you have made a video about this, but could you explain what brushes (if possible in detail, not everyone uses adobe products, but no biggie) you use for lineart, painting, shading etc?

Does anyone know how he did the face animation at 12:10 ?
I still don't know but it would be awesome if he makes a video teaching it.
Whoa- I didn't know this was posted today . . . well, I'm here to learn anyway-
Nice video! How come you don't recommend doing a front, side and back view?
i want to know a little more about the test at Blizzard. How much time did they let you? what did they request you to do and if there is also a test for illustration?
So I was thinking maybe u can make a video on traditional art
u should do a HOW TO DRAW MONSTER HANDS (if you havent already) Do some like amphibian hands, scaly hands, or furry ones.... (no that last one isnt not a suggestion to do furry fan art.... i want to get better at drawing Worgen claws)

i came here from a youtube search- 0:16
Destiny brought me to your channel, Sir !!!
muchas gracias maestro.
Hey Marc do you do any online courses that you review work and teach on? I'm learning to draw but I struggling on what and how to learn without a more direct course
Hey! Yes I do! I've been teaching via my ART School program (cbr.sh/lnyphs) for about 3 years now, check it out ;)
i was wondering if you can do on eon environments.. you mentioned it in the video but didnt' really touch on it.
Hey Marc did u make any video games or help make any video games at Blizzard entertainment.
My students
Bit of an off topic question, but how do you get so many gradients in your backgrounds without banding?
I'm getting good everyday Sensei-sama ..
Notification Gang B)
Hi! I have a question, If I am drawing concept art, should I leave background grey or I can draw detailed background to add context?
Hey Marc, how did you make the face animation at 12:10?
hi! really helpful video, i will keep in mind all the info included here. do you possibly know if i can use fonts from the internet in my concept sheet?
Animation would be interesting😎 I'm currently focusing on 2d animation at the moment since its easyer to make some beutiful awesome anime animations🎥✏

These concept sheets are like jobs or school,
The butts are the clocks.
