It’s a lot more work than you would think but when you’re lucky enough to do something you love, it isn’t that bad.

There was an old saying among emergency vehicle trainers: "Drive or shoot; don't try to do both!" With the advent of iPhones and similar cell phones, we can no longer say, "I never have a camera when I need one." My big Nikons sit mostly on the shelf now. Usually when I'm off road I'm driving alone, so I don't get video except through my front windshield mount! You're amazing - you've accomplished so much, and we appreciate you taking us along!
No UA-cam channel, but my iPhone is so much easier than my GoPro. The quality has become amazing, and I know my iPhone is not going to fail
Great video Hollie! For an action camera I love the Osmo Action 3. So much better than GoPro.. 40 minute battery life (adventure combo comes with 3 batteries $299) I’ve never lost footage or sound either.

I don’t edit and publish my videos, which makes life much simpler . That said what I do occasionally shoot with are 2 DJI action cams (version 1), 3 older DJI drones (P4, Air1 & Air2), and a DJI pocket 2. One of these days I should probably edit some of my footage and publish a few. But I mostly use these cameras for off road club documentation, or still photos for myself. And for that they work just fine.

51 Drones has a video: "You Should Buy the DJI Mini 3 Pro in 2024 ...." I won't speculate about whether it would be a good drone for you but it had a good price DECREASE because of the new Mini 4. I purchased a Skydio like yours in late 2022 but returned it for reasons unrelated to your use. And I am glad I returned it since Skydio abandoned the consumer market and now only builds commercial drones. You can have some good use from a drone where as my drone use is a somewhat expensive "hobby".
Regardless I certainly enjoy watching where you can go with Mischief Maker.

I use DJI action 3 and a pocket 2, and sometimes a "fancy" canon m50 in the garage. And sometimes a drone (DJI mini 2)
When I posted videos on UA-cam, years ago. I used a Flip video. Good quality vids,but I wasn't getting paid for them. At the time,I wasn't aware Ii could be paid ,but I just kept putting them out there. Of course Flip is no longer covered by Cisco, and my camera now is a CCBetter ,also outdated,but still takes great shots. I just don't put them out.
GoPro's just brake for no reason. Probably built in obsolescence cuz literally all of them just brake for no reason even ones that are never used in the field and are used mounted above a work bench permanently and never physically damaged or taken outside. I just use my Android and I have used my DSLR which I turned into a full spectrum camera so I use that for other stuff now. If I was going to do film as a living I would use Android, Sony's and BlackMagic's. (I will never make an iCloud account so I can never use an iPhone)
I really don't see why anyone would want more tech when what you've got serves the purpose! Sure, it's nice to have all the bells and whistles, ... ! Wondering if you've ever watched "Itchy Boots"? If not, maybe you'd like to check out her vlogging. She shoots and edits everything herself too, on the road, including in rural Africa!
What’s you recommendation on getting more folks to watch your content? I feel like I have decent content, I’m doing fun and interesting stuff but I just can’t seem to get very many views no matter what I do…….🤷🏻♂️
I have two questions. First being what editing software do you use. Second is why do you choose to use your phone versus action camera for the shots that you setup outside of the vehicle? I would be more concerned with running over or weather damaging my phone than an action camera.

The pocket 3 is great, so stable and yes, it will track. A DJI Action/Go pro and a pocket 3 is really all you need, just get external mics!

Casey La Delle gets some fantastic video using a 360 degree camera. It records in all directions at once, so when you edit you can pick which way the video is looking. He doesn't use a drone, but he gets wonderful shots using a camera on a long stick! You might want to give him a shout out to find out exactly what he is using. This could do wonders for your fluidity because it's like having a bunch of cameras running at once. I think you could just run a trail without ever stopping to set up a tripod. I think Rory does the same thing with a shorter stick, so he can get low front wheel shots.
Wouldnt a 360 degree cam make your life more easy? I mean, you dont have to find the perfect angle for the shot, you just choose it in the edit, which is a matter of seconds. You might end up with material you just didnt want to Film, cause you are in the middle of filming something different. When then something interesting happens offscreen, you still got this on cam, cause you are filming everything around you.
I have seen Casey LaDelle using such a cam and it is making some interesting shots.
Honestly my little channel we just use my phone and 2 cheap Campark 4k action cameras for either onboard or static shots, honestly I don't 100% rate go pros because they are so expensive, being an RC channel the risk of damaging the camera is high and what's harder is keeping the car in shot from the static mount on the controller than people think
Idea Holly, @ 13:05 when you were showing how close you got to the camera & tripod, could you put a flag on a stick on the tripod to stick up high enough for you to see it from Mischief Maker as you are approaching the camera on the trail? Like the flag you have on the back of MischiefMaker.
Try using non-GoPro branded batteries. My cheap Amazon ones work better than the original and I don’t have issues with it not turning on
I learned something from this one. Thanks. Hopefully I can apply some of this and make my videos better. I have to get over not wanting to look funny getting out to set up a camera, especially when no one is around. 😅
The outside edge of your tires are looking a bit worn... May want to think about spinning the tires around on the rims to get the better tread on the outside of the tires. :) But that all looks like way too much work to me. Good on you for providing great footage of your runs. I wish I lived around your area because I'd love to be a passenger on your runs.
A lot of UA-cam channel's that I watch have switched to the DJI cameras because they are cheaper and no Gopro problems.

I think those ppl going and spending 2000 or more on 1 cam just to do videos r only doing it to show off i think a gopro or phone or even some new cheap action cams r good enough and 1080p vs 4k look almost the same thing even on a 4k tv so y do 4k videos not everyone got a 4k tv or phone to watch it so they r wasting time and space doing 4k videos but we all have our own opinion thats just mine

Personally i love the above center cam that kinda shows driver views and once in a while the articulation is good too!!! The drone is always epic cause you can see some amazing views from it!! But for me the best shots are the driver views to see what you see or DONT SEE like the drops and all you see is skyLOL
Just recently started an off-road channel and all I have been using is my iPhone but still need a good mic, any recommendations?
GoPro firmware updates usually renews them. Could be sand too.

For me, getting the footage has always been the easy part. How do you find an inexpensive, easy to use, editor and actually do the editing part? I've tried multiple inexpensive editors, and they are extremely confusing to use and I give up. I'm disabled with a disabled partner and now down to four of nine kids. So, we don't have a budget for hundreds or thousands of dollars in editing software or fancy computer hardware. Most of our computers/laptops are 10-15 years old and the phones just don't have the processing power (they crash a lot trying to edit on them). Hoping very much you can do a part 2 for this video on that part of it. Thanks Hollie!
You can get a cheap little I5 computer with Windows 11 and enough memory and a solid state drive that runs rings around your 10 year old laptops for under $300 these days. Not up to gaming, but very capable of editing video in 4K format. There are some great deals on 24 inch monitors too.

The filming and angles I can get. But, the editing software is where I am stumped. The editing software I've tried, makes me quit. What software are you using?
Ok, since I didn't get a response, I am going to respond myself.
I love all you guys. My playlist is probably just like millions of others.
But when you, Matt's off road recovery, Fab rats, chad's fab, etc are all not responding, tells us that you are all getting the editing done from the same people. So PLEASE, don't preach to us how easy it is and not show us acrually how easy the total processes is. DO NOT FORGET, that all of you are using a professional team to produce and edit your videos and that is what helps in success.

Just like with Jeeps, check your battery as the culprit for electrical gremlins! Failing battery will cause lots of troubles with no clues as to why. They get abused on the trails with heat, cold dirt.
How did you pick your channel name i am struggling with that i am hoping to film some UA-cam videos to try and support my wheeling lol
It was just the name of my Jeep, but as my channel has grown, that has not necessarily served me well.
I just use a mirror. I am my biggest fan. 😅 (jk)
Very interesting video, I believe the average person doesn’t realize all that goes into the making of a UA-cam video especially for the off road and recovery people

Great video Hollie. My wife is a YT creator and retired from her nursing job last August. It is amazing the amount of work that goes into creating YT content. She just recently got monetized and that has given her additional motivation to do more. Her content is mostly done in her workshop with an iPad and her phone.

Walter put his career aside for just over 2 years to help out with the garage and Nessie, but he enjoys his work and is getting back to it full time because it makes him happy. Our goal is to build the YJ together but I need to get past my projects first (the Tread Lightly! Jeep and the Liberty).
This is so refreshing!! I know I tend to get caught up in things being professional and the right equipment when in reality my skill in story telling and audio doesn’t warrant the best camera etc.
Just sying that it looks like you may have some tread separation starting on your tires I noticed a bit on the back right mostly. At least that's what it looked like to me.
Good eyes. Fortunately, that is typical with BFG Red Label Krawlers. I’ve been told the compound on these tires can’t be used for bias-ply construction, so their construction is similar to a re-tread on a belted carcass. It doesn’t look great, but when you’re buying sticky tires, performance is always what matters most.
Where do you get the music for your videos?
My biggest issue is not knowing how to edit.
What microphone do you use? I like that it clips to your hat. Is it just Bluetooth to your camera or phone?
How about a collaboration sometime? I would love to bring the scrambler down and play at Sand Hollow!
I use Hollyland Lark Max wireless mics and the receiver just plugs into the phone/gopro/dji

Thanks so much for this, Hollie. I've been wanting to get my UA-cam channel up and running for have been so focused on getting the right gear, it's fallen behind.
My channel will be multifaceted, focusing on bringing my health back as well as my automotive and musical aspirations. Thankfully, as much time as I spend watching the (mainly) Utah based off road channels (MORR, FabRats, Mischief Maker, Trail Mater, Robby Layton, etc.) my automotive interests tend to lean more to the 2wd performance, hot rod, custom, etc end of the hobby, which will cut out the climbing up and down dunes setting up and recovering cameras.
Do you ever yell "Quiet on the set!" or "That's a take" just for fun?

At least you have some spare time between 9:30 pm and 3:00 am in case you need to do something more important than just sleep. ;>
Of course the other hurdle is hardware and software that will allow you to quickly edit, cleanup, color balance, stabilize, etc, etc the video and compile it for UA-cam. I know what I go through cleaning up Old Film and VHS Tape as an Amateur and its not something that you can do in a few hours in the morning to produce even 30 minutes of output that has any polish/finesse to it. So how do you do it?
Perhaps in your "Spare Time" you could give a Birds Eye View of what the Post Processing and Publishing is like?

I try and make good content. I'm new to this also. I also use my phone and a dash camera. I found with my tablet I can use an app that gives my tablet control over my phone where I can record remotely so I can see where I am in comparison to my Jeep. Thank you for the great content. I appreciate knowing that I'm not the only one that uses almost the same equipment. Have a great day and be safe.
But you forgot to include "links in the description below" as all UA-camrs do. UA-cam viewers are lazy and easily influenced - you show me stuff with affiliate links and I'll likely click and buy - or maybe that's just me. I do think you should include a link to your merch store in all your videos. But you not doing the typical UA-cam plugs and things is also why I love your channel so much. Just you being you - and like the overloading guy with his old Jeep said - thank you for being you! You are the best and I love your videos!

Thanks for the incite of how you do the things you do. Not particularly interested in filming myself doing anything I don't do wheeling or mechanics type things and pretty sure that even if I did and tried filming myself doing them if anyone would want to watch. But it's good to know that in the off chance that if I did or anyone else for that matter you've show at least how you do what you do and if someone is so inclined to do similar content they now have at least an Idea of how to go about doing it.
