YEET YEET MORE VIDS
Hi Wood!! How are you
It seems like there's a big disconnect between the development teams and the higher ups at Nintendo who make decisions outside of making games. It's like the developers understand what players want but everyone else at Nintendo doesn't.
Classic
Or that Nintendo of America is a separate entity of Nintendo and does things on their own accord and blame Japan per usual.
Honestly, it's an unwritten rule that there shall always be a disconnect between development and marketing teams.
@@mmstick kind of stupid
And from having worked in marketing a little rather than game dev, I deeply resent how some people in the field are obsessed with analytics and hoovering up every possible dollar. In theory. Nobody wants to make a good game and make money; they want to make the ultimate cash cow and make ALL the money. No moderation at all.
The smash commercial is one of the best things ever I’m glad you didn’t say anything bad about it
It funny
I remember that commercial
The commercial with Robin Williams and his daughter for skyward sword was awesome tho
Edit: I'm glad that I have led everyone to a new treasure lol
The one for Ocarina of Time on 3ds still gets me everytime.
@@colbyengstrom2039 every time man 😞
What was her name again? Oh right, Zelda
@@ruffles2824 Yeah man. Named right after princess Zelda because him and his wife were playing it at the time lol.
I love that one
i love how wood doesn't even bother to segway but just interrupts himself mid video
That Pokémon one is a classic. It’s so weird and funny
Which pokemon one?
demon_hawkeye ' the bus being crushed into a gameboy
That commercial lives rent free in my head
I mean it was the 90s. They were just trying to do what everyone else was doing at that time lol
The comments got turned off because it’s marked “for kids” that’s why you got the “try UA-cam kids” banner under the video
Yes
That's even worse 😂😂
I love the history of marketing and how much it’s changed in such a short amount of time. If you ever wanted to do this again, I would suggest you do Nintendo’s commercials in different regions instead of overtime, as it’s honestly just as funny and intriguing.
Nintendo back then: Arrests mario in weird advertisements
Nintendo now: Literally killing mario on March 31st
"Sorry Mario, you've wah'ed your last hoo."
Yeah...
at least we know why now tho
Nintendo: *holds Mario at gunpoint* “BUY HIM NOW BEFORE HE’S GONE FOREVER!”
SUper Mario nooo D:
OMG I’ve only just noticed the Shield in the back that’s awesome
Anyone know what's under it? I want to know but the background is too blurry
Only now?!
It looks like a face
I agree, the plastic shield is much better than the couple hundred dollar in box console or the multi thousand dollar guitar...
It’s a backpack that someone gifted him.
The celebrities part is so true though. I'm sure there are celebrities that actually play games on the switch and they could talk about what they like about it and stuff
"Wait Nintendo was weird?"
"Always has been 🔫"
U know they had like taxi drivers, toy factories and even some kind of s** hotels before they started with videogames
@@dj.stalin3122 don't forget they are technically the oldest of the 3 big ones originating in 1800's with Hanafuda Cards
@@darthpablo8215 yea yea thats what i meant with toys :)
I remember watching that first commercial with the crazy Pokemon-crushing buss driver on TV. Also the one with Mario getting arrested and the original Smash Brothers one. Maybe I'm old?
Nah, I played magic the gathering long before pokemon ever even came out. you're not old. Its just for whatever reason, the kids who grew up during the N64 era seem to be hanging around gaming sites the most these days.
So glad Wood could do these non-filter videos now, without risking a relationship with Nintendo
I remember that bus commercial so clearly.
That 3DS is on... You can see the blue light is on.
When you look at it from that angle, it's all blacked out and can only be viewed by looking straight ahead at it. I remember this from my own 3DS
Speaking of Nintendo collaborating with UA-camrs: Shovel Knight Amiibo trailer is such a fantastic video
I miss 90s commercials. It was the wild west back then.
Yeah but I feel like having Mario arrested in a modern commercial is gonna spark a lot of controversy, other than that totally
life was simple so everyone was chill
@@inproduction7605 yeah, they killed the chill🤷♂️
It was rough, especially the Japanese ones
Technically...he really is there because he’s seeing his reflection on the screen.
You beat me to it

lol
Lol, i always skip it. At some point I mighttt try that free trial but I don't need to hear about it again, I know what it is.
his ads aren't nearly as bad as Linus Tech Tips which reminds of todays sponsor after showing you a random thing, LTT Store dot Com.
Your content recently has been absolutely amazing. You can see the effort put into every video and I’m loving it! Easily one of the best content creators on this platform. Sending my love all the way from Scotland x
"I can't show this"
*Proceeds to show us when not directly looking at it*
I mean, a quick Google search can get you to it in a jiffy but ok
@@waltercomunello121 sure but that wasn't the point of my comment
This needs to be a regular thing ie watching really old game adverts just to see what they got away with back then lol
I love that smash bros commercial. It’s always been one of my favourites.
I love it too
Wanna know what Nintendo did before gaming. They had Toys, Trading cards and Love Hotels. Yeah I'm serious
Yup, a 120 years old company
It’s ancient very ancient
At 9:03 the reason comments are turned off is because it's a video "targeted at kids", which means it shows up in UA-cam Kids. You can see it also doesn't let you add it to a playlist (it's greyed out) and it has a thing that says try UA-cam Kids
Nothing phases me after the OG DS era where their slogan was "Touching is good"
Best of the best
"The second best thing to do in the dark." If that was 2006, I assume it was second to the DS.
This was a great video. You have such a distinct perspective around consoles. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on PC gaming and what draws you into consoles like the Switch so much. Presumably you have a very competent gaming PC since you do video editing
In all seriousness despite the weirdness marketing is such a fascinating thing to analyze, I think it’s very interesting to see the type of stuff that “family friendly” companies like this were allowed to do and the different things they were able to get away with. Because a lot these things would *never* fly nowadays.
I'm so glad I didn't see that bus pokémon trailer as a child, i would have been scarred
I thought he was gonna bring up their past when they made a specific type of hotel, but after this it seems like that mentality was never lost after hotels.
I fully remember when that Smash Brothers commercial came out, it was BRILLIANT.
One of my favorites ever. Never forgot about it and my cousin had smash brothers and it use to drive me insane with jealousy. I had a stupid playstation 😞
"Are you recording your audio through an old boot?" I LOLed.
You've got to remember though. The 90s were a different time. A lot more relaxed about a lot of things.
Exactly, I'm not really a fan of judging the past with a modern lense.
yeah nowdays you can't even crack a joke and not offend someone somewhere on the internet anymore. Anything you say or do will get dislike from some ppl anyway no matter what
You're one of my favourite UA-camrs. You make me feel calm! :)
Taking the "Nintendo hurt my feelings" theme right to the bank aren't we?
low key a blessing nintendo dropped you since now we get funny content like this
Wood: "I'll no longer be working with Nintendo, here's why"
Nintendo Gradiente (official Nintendo manufacturer here in Brazil until 2001) commercials were awesome in the '90s, the ones about the GameBoy were like people trying to get flights with the most stopovers or going to banks with the biggest line so they would have an excuse to play GameBoy.
imagine Jennifer Lawrence (hunger games) in nintendo advert using botw archery
What's funny is that all of this stuff about "seriously distracting" applies just as much to cell phones now than anything.
These ads were wild though. Wonder what the over/under is on how long until Nintendo deleted some of these videos from the channel. The one with all the characters in mascot costumes beating up each other is great though.
Also, your sponsored ads are better than any other UA-cam channel I've ever seen. You find a way to make them tongue in cheek and funny while also genuinely making me consider using them. Only channel where the apps don't upset me at all; I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing how you advertise them every time. Kudos 🙏🏾
I would not be surprised if Nintendo employees were forced to keep quiet about these secrets.
“The second best thing to do in the dark....well it’s not wrong” 🤣 I don’t know why that killed me
The 80's and 90's was a different time. We had movies like"Revenge of the Nerds" and "Porky's".
@@redstratus97 that was a funny movie too, but the difference is you would see Revenge of the Nerds at night and it would be unedited.
I'm not digging these click bait titles I must say, it's not even necessary, "watching old nintendo commercials" would have gotten just as many clicks
It’s just a joke, everyone does it even markiplier said “I’m a rabid clickbaiter” if you need proof it was in his video “this subreddit hates dogs”
Nah not really, you clearly don’t stick around for Wood’s livestreams where he was literally stressing out for not as many clicks on his promoted videos so he asked chat if he should clickbait and everyone said he should
@@blootube97 I remember that stream haha
It’s to get on UA-cam algorithm
I didn’t know Cody did that lol! He’s a way bigger Star now.
Your hair looks freaking beautiful in this video!! Loved the video, thanks for making it! 😄💗

And this is the only thing you comment on?
Weak.
the bus driver commercial is one my favourite from back then
I remember one when I was a kid, a guy kept eating and then exploded spaghetti everywhere.
I remember
All of the commercials with Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda for ‘The Legend of Zelda’ games for the 3DS still hold such a special place in my heart
So early could preorder the bible
Don't, the bible is a lie and will make you dumber.
@@SALTYTOAD000 it’s all true and could set you free
Oh no these replies
@@ggs27 It's already starting isn't it
Why do you people care if you are early in a video?
Wood been here since October 2019 and ur channels the best on Nintendo stuff
Hey little buddy, wanna ride

He said buddy not bunny pikachu isn't a bunny it's a mouse
Wood inadvertently did a shallow dive of the evolution of marketing over the last 30 years. Like how everything had a layer of “extreme” in the 90s, edgy 2000’s, or the manic insanity of the early teens that most notably came from companies like Old Spice. This was fun.
The realy weird is, the Nintendo and the fact how advertisements work in Japan. I totaly understand why this adverds look strange to us. After I been in Japan for several times for business now and watched there TV comersials, the Nintendo adds in the West are suddenly make sense. Its very odd. Japanese targeted adds just don't work in the west......
Great video, absolutely had to share some of those old ad images with my friends
*everyone looking up “old gameboy commercial bed” to see the censored image*
It wasn't even that bad. I actually thought she's naked that's why it was blurred out...
Lol, the animal testing one where they censored the rat is the one I found more amusing.
Oh, I found it and it's basically on screen uncensored in two spots at 15:22 for the Nintendo bed lady....jeez Nintendo
I got annoyed that i made a voyage to google when at 16:51 it is uncensored slap-bang in the middle of the creen
Love your videos Wood! Excited to see what you do next 💙
Someone is still pissed he was dropped from the creator program
Who got dropped ?
@@josephjoestar5444 beaten ups was dropped from Nintendo’s creator program and milked it for months
0:54 I definitely remember that commercial lol. I like it a lot, but yes, that bus driver was creepy lmaoo
Man wood if you haven't classic Nintendo commercials buckle up you need to catch up man some of them are great funny and weird. You will love it!
"This is better than my TV"
Me: d-do you even have a TV than?
Am I the only one who doesn't have a Nintendo but still watches Woody's videos? 😂
11:08 OMG I did not see that coming, what the mouse does with the Game Boy! I'm dying! Actually, it wasn't until like my 4th time rewinding and watching again that I noticed Wood's reaction!
Hey Wood! That tennis balls video was categorized as a "UA-cam Kids" video. Nintendo didn't turn off the comments , UA-cam did for minor safety.
"oh Larry where you watching something" your ads are the best part 😂
5:19, that 3ds is ON. Also, when I first experienced that no-glasses parallax 3d effect, my reaction was O_O so the man's reaction is not that exaggerated. Fail on this one Wood.
2:56 best ad transition ever.
*applause*
Oooohhhh
You gonna make a SEGA one next?
One high point to me was the Robin and Zelda Williams commercials. They were wholesome!
Wood's still salty about not being a Nintendo ambassador anymore lol
The old commercials back in the mid to late 90s were where cartoons were being marketed with an "edge" to them like the gangsta versions of the Looney Toons characters and Conkers Bad Fur Day, FF7, etc.
As far as the early UA-cam vids, youtube back then was more like DIY atmosphere. Nintendo seemed to be going for that vibe rather than big company marketing
I love how wood thought nintendo turned off comments even though yt kids was advertised in the comments
They’ve been turning off comments for yt kids videos, I guess so kids don’t see the vulgarity in the comments as usual haha
UA-cam is doing it, not Nintendo
@@RealTalkAlexV I know that's the what the whole comment was about
Exactly lol, it's just yt kids
Nintendo newer stuff feels like mass appeal while the 90s commercials (and personally Joel's commercial, though I'm biased because I love community and seeing him just makes me smile now. plus he always acts like that so it doesn't give me that disconnect like with the brie Larson commerical) seem more in line with Nintendo's main audience.
*HeY LitTLE bUdDy, WaNnA RidE?*
“Yeah whatever!” *bus drives off*
I remember most of these old commercials fondly
The eye strain from the 3DS was unbearable....
Every time I hear that “I can’t see me lovin no body but you for all my life” song, I think about that Nintendo commercial for Smash Bros. Best commercial ever.
It’s like the angry ex-girlfriend that has a lot to say
AGREE ahaha THE BITTER MAN
It was a great idea for a video!! Loved it 💜 I think I'm gonna go watch more weird nintendo publicity 😏
Day one of saying : Thank you wood, very cool
(Edit) Thank you so much wood for likeing This comment. I love your videos and have watched them several times each! P.s. I’m still going to say thanks on each of your videos!
Wow, Thanks Wood I didn’t think I would get you to like it on the first day ( I’m still just going to do it because I love your vids!)
Congrats!
has... has... has wood never watched 1999s and 2000s nintendo ads before this? i thought everybody has seen the smash 64 ad lol, it’s too iconic
i watch at 2x speed so that even if i'm not the first one here, i might be the first one to watch the whole thing.
DONE!!! First to finish!! (probably? maybe? idk lol)
My computer can only go up to 12 chunks (render distance) so I legit went to the store and bought a FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR computer that can go to max render distance and I STILL couldn't find a single person who cares. You basically made me waste my money...
I remembered that Pokemon Red and Blue and Yellow commercial takes me back
2:36 the dog sounds like it’s tryna do a Scott the woz impression
Oh I remember the 'ferret down your trousers' one, must have been in one of the few gaming mags that made it to Tasmania in the early or mid 90's, I also remember original playstation ads could be pretty out there too
It's so sad that we'll never get more of these original commercials because every company are now focused on avoid triggering anyone on Twitter.
You should stream old video game commercials on Twitch. That would probably be a hit.
Me actually thinking that this video was serious....
then I see the bus driver killing Charizard😐
Nooooo not the mouse whyyyyy
Also wasn't expecting that lotr Google search XD
Back in the days where we weren't scared of offending anyone. Even the commercials were epic.
You gotta love those old nintendo commercials. A little piece of my childhood.
The strangest commercial to me will always be the cheese experiment for the gameboy micro. It just starts humping the system.
Them images will forever be integrated into my brain, especially the Pokemon one with the weird bus driver lol
Omg that pokemon commerical!!! Hahaha. I remember seeing that when I got home from school to watch gargoyles. Also gotta love that like/dislike ratio on the Brie Larson commercial. 😂
As always, I love this video, Wood! A lot of those commercials were very nostalgic for me.
I can’t be the only one to wonder what he looks like with short hair
Wood "They had some bad ones"
Me: Oh so we are using the Wizard/Power Glove definition of 'Bad' then. ;)
