Leila, i have to tell you that we are going through the same thing. I am a little older that you, 45, but i am over corporate life. I have worked remote for the past 6 years. I work 50 to 55 hours a week. I am beyond burned out. Over the past 3 years i have paid off all our bills except the mortgage, which sits at $203,000. My bills for my family to survive at bare minimum is at $3000 a month. I have cancelled everything! My mortgage is $1500 of that! For the past month i have been re-evaluating what i want my 50s to look like and a 50 year old me would appreciate a paid off mortgage. So I am pressing on at a job that i hate and i have given myself a 5 year plan. I will take a sabatical when i turn 50. I have looked into velocity banking and i might give it a try to pay off this mortgage. I have also picked up a side hustle with a family member in truck dispatching. I have been doing it for 2 weeks and all the money i make i am putting it towards the mortgage. This is all to say that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
As a 7/11 Cancerian ♋️, I can completely understand 😀. I actually took my sabbatical at age 32 for almost 3 years. Lived overseas like a King stretching that dollar. Enjoyed every moment.
I left full time teaching in 2019 for my education entrepreneurial business. I've thrived. I too had an exit plan. I side hustled for 3 years, became totally debt free (including mortgage) and laid the ground work to teach independently. I love it and have success and peace. I set my schedule now and am in control of my life journey. I have health insurance via the marketplace. In GA I've been pleased with my plan and coverage. My doctors are through Emory. It takes research. Best of luck to you. Having that exit plan, staying debt free and knowing there is emergency funds available are key. Im 52 and definitely live a lovely life.

Don’t forget to factor in hiring an assistant at the very least for your entrepreneurial journey. Turning your business into another job is very easy to do and can lead to the same burnout.
Very brave of you to make your plans so public! I didn’t take a sabbatical until I was forced to as a result of redundancy at 42. Even then, I was responsible for a disabled husband and not completely free to do what I wanted. You are absolutely on the right track and even if you don’t succeed in building your 36k buffer, you will be superbly placed. Building on your side-hustles is perfect, but still leave the wiggle room to create something new. I feel there is more for you to achieve and accept your future is more successful than you think possible xxx
I would love to take a sabbatical at some point. I've thought about studying abroad or digging into an interest of writing a book at some point. I haven't seen a lot of content surrounding this. Thanks for sharing!

Absolutely love this! Totally relate on Slow FI and wanting to live a more relaxed paced life. I’ve just hit COAST FI and it definitely feels good to not be so intense with investing. I just do my employers match now and saving for more fun things so I can actually enjoy life too! So inspired, good luck! ❤

Don’t forget that life comes at you fast, we can always have hopes and desires and that should never be taken away, but also sometimes we don’t know the path that will lay before us. 24 months ago i didn’t know or envision the last 24 months of my life- both highs and lows- this month (2021) we got engaged- Hubs dad was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer, we hybrid moved in to help care for him, planned a funeral and a wedding, purged a childhood home, grieved, moved from our apartment to a home, got married, had a honeymoon, saved/paid off debt (officially debt free). And i was dog tired. Run down, but i never anticipated that would have been the last 24 months. So i love your ambition of a sabbatical and fully can’t wait to hear about your ventures on it, love love love the planning process! But also just don’t put too much weight on what you will actually do during that sabbatical until the time is a little closer! I hear ya on rest it’s definitely something i think our bodies need! PS - for that insurance another option maybe you too will be planning a wedding during that time and can then add to your partners insurance. ❤
well wishes to you and your journey. i completely understand you when you say you have been doing stuff you don"t want to do since highschool. the 9-5 work life can be mundane but at least you are in a position where you can collect money and increase your wealth! everyday is another dollar and you have a great plan in place, time will fly!
After you learn how to pronounce letters in Spanish, I highly recommend you read aloud in Spanish. It helped me become more confident and tying it to an activity I love helped me explore amazing books written in another language. This one really spoke to me Leila. I’m a university professor, and I actually have a sabbatical planned in 2026. But, I have already reached financial independence. I’m struggling with pulling the trigger on self-sponsored sabbatical or early retirement sooner or waiting for the sponsored one. The problem with the one through my university is that it obligates me to 3 more years of work after I return. First world problems, I know, but I have no idea what I want to do.
Ahh that's a tough one!! An additional 3 years is a big commitment. I'm sure if you've been saving/investing you could probably make a solid plan to do it on your own!

I took a 14-month sabbatical back in 2020 with no income other than occasional Door Dash and selling things on Mercari. Now, it set me back financially about $14,000 but when I tell you it changed my life?! I had a new perspective on money and now have a newfound purpose for working. Once I got a taste of that freedom I didn’t wanna ever go back. So now I’m working to be able to retire early.

Yeah. I work for Starbucks and been with them for 9 years. They offer leave of absence where I am able to return after some time off, usually a month but it's for every few years. I could if I want to but I just save them up.
Also Leila, I know you don’t like to factor him into your finances but you do live with your boyfriend who is a huge safety net for you so it’s wayyyyy less risky you leaving your job because you won’t be homeless because he can cover the bills if needed. Just pointing something out to give you more confidence.
I feel the frustration with the Salesforce ecosystem/job market. Believe me I've been reached out to for jobs and then ghosted several times. It is definitely a weird ecosystem. Seems almost like the SF job market is full of "spam". Best of luck with your plans! Hope to hear about how you are feeling about going thru with it in the future.

I can relate to your feelings of burnout so much. Interviewing in tech is degrading at times. They demand so much--multiple interviews, on-the-spot automated coding riddles, and will barely even engage in the interviews themselves. People are like "oh, it's for a high income, it shouldn't be easy" when I don't even think doctors get grilled as much 😂 Besides, I think regardless of the situation, all humans should be treated with respect. No one is better than anyone else based on where they work. I'm late to this because I searched for saving for a sabbatical and I'm a sub of yours 😊 I haven't seen the others yet but one of my bosses is a FIRE proponent and he suggested investing the savings for a sabbatical. I'm only planning one in 10 years or so, so that's probably what I'll do to beat inflation.

Awhile you are still working with saleforce, have you thought about living off you side hustle/ business incoming for a few months. Just use that income only to live off of. If you are short income wise then pull from your salesforce income. Give you somewhat of a idea of your income situation once you leave corporate.
I do actually look into that every month! I invest quite a bit back into my business from my business income, so I would usually end up short but I think it would be better if I was spending more time on it. Most of my money goes to savings these days so I don't need too much!!
Last time I changed jobs I was asked to leave my old job the day I gave notice. I had fully intended to work the full two weeks then go straight into the new job but having a true break with no expectations and no deadlines looming over me was an amazing feeling. That was the first time I realized I was burnt out so I feel you on wanting to take a sabbatical, I do to at some point. I just need to get my finances in order and save to do it. I want to go to Italy for a month or something at some point.

Was there a specific breakdown for the 36k or is it just to cushion your income? Also, does that number include enough to travel? Are you planning to invest that amount or put it in a HYSA? Uhm absolutely!! I need all the accountability and motivation I can get! Definitely start planning yours, it's kind of fun. -$36K would cover a full year (or more) of my bare bones expenses so that's how I got that number. -I'm hoping to save more money in my travel sinking fund as well as open another credit card to cover travel costs. Technically the $36K wouldn't cover travel but if I can increase my business income I would try to use that. -I will save the $36K in my HYSA. I'll still be investing separately though. -My top priority is getting my course launched as well as starting group coaching. I have a number of other digital things I could sell as well but it will take time. I should be ok to launch those 2 without exerting too much extra time/energy, butI do know I need to be mindful of that. I don't mind the questions at all! They're all good ones so thank you! I probably will go live at some point again 😊 And yes I 100% will not work a standard 9-5 until retirement, I genuinely don't know how people do that!

I’m in a really stressful job and I’ve already decided that if they fire me (which is a real possibility) I’m taking a sabbatical for 1 year. I plan to use the money in my brokerage account to cover my expenses. I’m so over the corporate rat race and toxicity.

Hi Leila! Did you know that you can withdraw money penalty-free to use for insurance from your IRA? I know you have a RothIRA and I believe it does have to be a trad. IRA. I'm sure there are some other caveats, but I am also planning on taking an sabbatical and was looking for options. Obviously, there is more information on the internet. Hope this helps!
I think my concern would be trying to get a new job again when you are done with the sabbatical. When do you start looking into the year when some jobs take up to 6 months to find apply and get hired especially in this market.
For some reason this doesn't worry me at all! I think because I won't want to return to work 😂 if absolutely necessary I would just find an hourly job which is always hiring these days
Also, you might want to rethink suffering through the next 18 months. Give yourself 2-3 months to find a job that you’ll actually like. Talk to a headhunter/recruiter and have them help you.
Job hunting and the whole process is so draining to me 😂 but yeah definitely something to consider. I genuinely don't think I would like any corporate job though lol. If I can work less I may not mind it, but I still probably wouldn't like it
I think you are underestimating your ability to run with just your business. I also think if you are super burnt out now 18 months will be a really long time to wait.
I might’ve missed this but does your current job offer a good 401k match and if so, would leaving before you’re fully vested forfeit that? Or will you be fully vested before you leave?
This is the time for you to do this while you don’t have kids and bigger responsibilities like me. I am tired etc but have no choice busy to go go go. Ugh.
Yeah I agree! Overall, I don't like the constraints of a 9-5, to me that's just too much working. I would probably be ok with a corporate job if it was only a few hours each day lol But yes I knew going into Salesforce that I wouldn't love it, it was more so to work remote and have a higher pay 😩
@@PersonalFinancewithLeilaI work a “9-5” job for the government but they allow us to have wellness time up to six hours a pay period to take off for exercising so that I’m working less hours overall each pay period but still getting paid 80 hours. In addition we’re allowed to flex our time so that if we don’t want to use our leave to attend an appointment or need to leave early for the day, we can stay later another day to make up for it and not exhaust sick leave or vacation time. I’m in HR and learned that I needed to move away from working with the “public” after being in customer service coming from careers previously in the food industry and banking. So I’ve thankfully been able to work from home and find the better work balance where I don’t take work home at the end of the day and can truly clock out and enjoy my time off the clock without worrying that I need to do something else, which in my other jobs I felt led to burnout way too quickly for me. I’m about the same age as you and definitely have friends who have jobs where they’re working way too many hours and way too less of pay. So the burnout just happens way too quickly for so many people our age that companies need to start factoring in summer breaks for people. 😂

Awhile you are still working with saleforce, have you thought about living off you side hustle/ business incoming for a few months. Just use that income only to live off of. If you are short income wise then pull from your salesforce income. Give you somewhat of a idea of your income situation once you leave corporate.
I do actually look into that every month! I invest quite a bit back into my business from my business income, so I would usually end up short but I think it would be better if I was spending more time on it. Most of my money goes to savings these days so I don't need too much!!
Last time I changed jobs I was asked to leave my old job the day I gave notice. I had fully intended to work the full two weeks then go straight into the new job but having a true break with no expectations and no deadlines looming over me was an amazing feeling. That was the first time I realized I was burnt out so I feel you on wanting to take a sabbatical, I do to at some point. I just need to get my finances in order and save to do it. I want to go to Italy for a month or something at some point.
What a-holes to say just leave today 😂 but at least you got that break. I've always worked the day up to my next job so I can imagine that feeling is awesome

And your vision for your sabbatical is super inspiring!! I want that so much 😩 Thank you so much for sharing! I’m currently in a similar situation and extremely tempted to start planning my own sabbatical! Maybe we can be accountability buddies for the next 18 months 😂 I don’t have a UA-cam channel, but if I were to manage a 1 year sabbatical I would for sure write a novel. And maybe start a podcast? Ugh there so many ways to live a rich life when you don’t have a boss breathing down your neck.
How did you pick the 36k number? Was there a specific breakdown for the 36k or is it just to cushion your income? Also, does that number include enough to travel? Are you planning to invest that amount or put it in a HYSA?

I’m mostly being nosy because I want to do a sabbatical too! I am feeling beyond burnt out. I don’t have an autoimmune disease, but I do have OCD which can be absolutely debilitating and exhausting. I don’t have a lot invested for my age, but just the thought of having to work a corporate 9-5 job until I’m 65 makes me want to sob
Uhm absolutely!! I need all the accountability and motivation I can get! Definitely start planning yours, it's kind of fun.
-$36K would cover a full year (or more) of my bare bones expenses so that's how I got that number.
-I'm hoping to save more money in my travel sinking fund as well as open another credit card to cover travel costs. Technically the $36K wouldn't cover travel but if I can increase my business income I would try to use that.
-I will save the $36K in my HYSA. I'll still be investing separately though.
-My top priority is getting my course launched as well as starting group coaching. I have a number of other digital things I could sell as well but it will take time. I should be ok to launch those 2 without exerting too much extra time/energy, butI do know I need to be mindful of that.

And yes I 100% will not work a standard 9-5 until retirement, I genuinely don't know how people do that!

I’m in a really stressful job and I’ve already decided that if they fire me (which is a real possibility) I’m taking a sabbatical for 1 year. I plan to use the money in my brokerage account to cover my expenses. I’m so over the corporate rat race and toxicity.
Yeah if I were to be laid off I would take that as a sign to take my sabbatical early 😂

I’m speaking from experience I also have an autoimmune disease which caused me @ age 40 to go on permanent disability. I’m so glad you are focusing on self care.😊 Could u go on Sebastian insurance? I 100% agree insurance is sooooo important in the US.
I believe you can only be added to a partner’s insurance after you are married, but don’t quote me on that
Hi Leila! Did you know that you can withdraw money penalty-free to use for insurance from your IRA? I know you have a RothIRA and I believe it does have to be a trad. IRA. I'm sure there are some other caveats, but I am also planning on taking an sabbatical and was looking for options. Obviously, there is more information on the internet. Hope this helps!
I think my concern would be trying to get a new job again when you are done with the sabbatical. When do you start looking into the year when some jobs take up to 6 months to find apply and get hired especially in this market.
For some reason this doesn't worry me at all! I think because I won't want to return to work 😂 if absolutely necessary I would just find an hourly job which is always hiring these days

Also, you might want to rethink suffering through the next 18 months. Give yourself 2-3 months to find a job that you’ll actually like. Talk to a headhunter/recruiter and have them help you.
Job hunting and the whole process is so draining to me 😂 but yeah definitely something to consider.
I genuinely don't think I would like any corporate job though lol. If I can work less I may not mind it, but I still probably wouldn't like it

I might’ve missed this but does your current job offer a good 401k match and if so, would leaving before you’re fully vested forfeit that? Or will you be fully vested before you leave?
They offer a 6% match and luckily it's been fully vested from the beginning!
This is the time for you to do this while you don’t have kids and bigger responsibilities like me. I am tired etc but have no choice busy to go go go. Ugh.

Yeah I agree! Overall, I don't like the constraints of a 9-5, to me that's just too much working. I would probably be ok with a corporate job if it was only a few hours each day lol
But yes I knew going into Salesforce that I wouldn't love it, it was more so to work remote and have a higher pay 😩
@@PersonalFinancewithLeilaI work a “9-5” job for the government but they allow us to have wellness time up to six hours a pay period to take off for exercising so that I’m working less hours overall each pay period but still getting paid 80 hours. In addition we’re allowed to flex our time so that if we don’t want to use our leave to attend an appointment or need to leave early for the day, we can stay later another day to make up for it and not exhaust sick leave or vacation time. I’m in HR and learned that I needed to move away from working with the “public” after being in customer service coming from careers previously in the food industry and banking. So I’ve thankfully been able to work from home and find the better work balance where I don’t take work home at the end of the day and can truly clock out and enjoy my time off the clock without worrying that I need to do something else, which in my other jobs I felt led to burnout way too quickly for me.
I’m about the same age as you and definitely have friends who have jobs where they’re working way too many hours and way too less of pay. So the burnout just happens way too quickly for so many people our age that companies need to start factoring in summer breaks for people. 😂
