Fruehauf Trailer Corporation, previously Fruehauf Trailer Company (1918-1963) and Fruehauf Corporation (1963-1989),[1] was an American company engaged in the manufacture and sale of truck trailers, and other machinery and equipment, with headquarters located in Detroit, Michigan. It was founded in 1918 in Detroit, after August Fruehauf created the semi-trailer and launched a new industry. The Fruehauf trailer company introduced revolutionary inventions to trucking and transportation with hydraulic dump trailers, bulk tanker trailers, and automatic fifth-wheel couplings among their more than one thousand patents, including the shipping container in 1956. Expanding across the country, Fruehauf had 16 plants and more than 80 distributorships for parts and service. Globally, the company expanded into Europe, South America, and Asia.
Following a proxy battle in the late 1980s the company filed for bankruptcy protection in 1997. International divisions became independent, U.S. subsidiaries such as Kelsey Hayes, Pro-Par, Budd Wheels, and Hobbs were sold; Wabash National acquired the crippled company in 1997.
The company's founder, August Charles Fruehauf (1868-1930), was born in Fraser, Michigan, the son of Sophia and Charles Fruehauf.[2][3] He began his career as a Detroit-area blacksmith and carriage builder. In 1914, a local businessman named Frederic M. Sibley asked Fruehauf to build a trailer that could be towed behind a Ford Model T and transport a boat to upper Michigan. Fruehauf successfully built the device, and Sibley requested he build additional trailers for use on his lumber yard.[4] Fruehauf would call them "semi-trailers", and his product proved popular. In 1918, he incorporated his business as the Fruehauf Trailer Company.[1][5][6]
The semi-trailers soon demonstrated their practicality and orders came in from competing lumber dealers and any manufacturer who wanted to expand their customer base. Closed van trailers were designed and put into service. Industries such as dairy and fuel oil were revolutionized with this "go-anywhere" type of transportation. Capitalizing on August Fruehauf's slogan, "a horse can pull more than it can carry, so can a truck", the company continued to grow.

Isn't it oh so satisfying, after the painting is done, to.peel off those long strips of masking tape to reveal the paintwork below?
The kit went together really well. Wouldn't it be cool to have Yosemite Sam cartoons for the mud flaps?
    Lovely job, Chris.

Another great build Chris, love getting tips from your videos. I've built a few AMT Fruehauf trailer kits. I found if you glue the axles to the radius rods/track rods instead of the spring packs and let the rods move freely in their sockets (think of the back wheel on a motor bike), you can achieve the look of suspension travel if you display the trailer on rough terrain.

Legal load needs 3 chains on each roll depending on the weight being loaded . Those rolls are roughly 20,000 lbs each . 35 years driving o t r .nice build though

I thought they also had to be loaded per the box art? Otherwise that mass is just begging to ride along in the cab every time you have to lean into the brakes...

I'm still catching up with your builds but I like this kit and the weathering is very nice, for future reference those side rails are called rub rails, they protect your chains and straps from being ripped off in an accident and they are not supposed to have any tie-down equipment outside those rails, and the front panel on a flatbed is called the header, it's good for light loads but coils would just roll right through the cab, nice job Chris

This is an impressive kit owing to the many different loads you can put on it. The steel rolls are interesting, but the main thing that does it for me is the woodgrain on the bed and the weathering potential - so many of these trailers I have seen are very old and the wood is either broken or rotting. Again, another impressive build.

I built this over 40 years ago and the Dayton rims, hubs, brake drums and coils were not chromed. Could not say about the time in between.
The decking that I have seen on flatbeds has been oak and without maintenance /preservatives weathers to a light gray.

OUTSTANDING BUILD❗ Unfortunately not enough chains ⛓️ on the loan. No way in hell would they be able to pull that off. BUT‼️ you could display it with the 1970 Ford Galaxy police car sitting behind it as if he was pulled over. 😆

Good stuff. I do wish Round 2 would look at some newer trucks/trailers rather than just continuing to re-pop these 50-60 year old kits. I would Dearly like to see a a heavy duty low boy trailer. Maybe Mobius might get around to making one.

Very nice build but that load setup would never fly in the real world. Imagine if that last coil chain broke. The other two coils are not likely to stop it. The result would be three multi tons of cold rolled steel crashing through the back of the tractor cab. In a hard braking scenario, anyway..
