One Saturday afternoon, many years ago, 1965 'ish, I rocked up at Len Street's to get some bits, and Max was sitting on the ground beside his jacked up Elite working on the right-rear hub of this particular Elite and, having some difficulty. So being the sort of helpful chap that I am, I pitched in and sorted the problem - I still have my official Lotus Service Certificates from when I worked at Panshanger and Delemare Road.

Not only is it the prettiest Lotus ever I think it is the prettiest car ever. I saw them race in the 60s and I have loved them ever since.

I bought an Elite in 1974 for £400. It was bright orange. Body # 1380. Being not long out of college, when I had engine and rear axle problems I had to sell; to a Swiss gentleman who wasn't interested in the number plate-3 MTO-which I still have. The car still exists in Europe today, raced in the orange paint it still wears. What a car that was. If only I'd had the spare cash I have today.

Re styling and comparison with the E-type. From some angles the Jag looks dodgy to me the rear end and rear wheels always looked proportionally suspect. This Lotus is perfect from every angle and has some of the most beautiful curves. The door when open, look at the interior curves and the windscreen meeting the roof and body and the bonnet and front end...etc.

It was very expensive and not profitable for lotus to build the Elite and so the Elan was born! Both beautiful and revolutionary!

Any chance of you getting to do a proper review of this Elite? one of my favourite cars and sadly so little footage of them on youtube?

Nice video of a very good looking car and to be honest, a car which I didn't know about. I love the look of it.

3:20 Single SU cars were reckoned to be good for 75bhp, twin SU around 80 bhp, and twin Webers (as here) around 95. Higher compression and lumpy race cams got you up to 105bhp

It is such a nice car. So different and so much lotus about it.
It is so easy to push...I can confirm that. The throttle wire snapped just after he was to drive it back to his camper van and I had to push it from one end of the pit to the other and up on the trailer. Was not that hard

Great car James. My father has an Elan +2 130/5 in Norfolk if fancy featuring it in a future video.

One of the best cars ever made.

Beautiful, remarkably technically advanced, but also very flawed. They were noisy, needed lots of maintenance (rear hubs and drive shaft needed greasing every few hundred miles to prevent bearing failure, electrics were a nightmare), and had serious issues like rear suspension struts bursting through the bodywork.... Don't think I hate the car, I bought Denis Ortenburger's book on the Elite in 1978 (+ still have it) and tried to buy one.

It has a fiberglass frame. Therefore, every mile driven destroys the car a little bit. It is for smooth racetracks, not country roads.

What can you say about this car? The circumstances of its genesis having the minds of four or five genius guys, the engineering, the styling and aerodynamics make it unique in many ways. Must be the finest Lotus.
It would not be an easy choice if I were buying a car in 1963 and trying to choose between say the Lotus or Jaguar? I think the Lotus looks better even than the Jag (I know most would disagree)! The Jag sure is quicker and has that amazing XK engine, but I know the Lotus drives and feels better behind the wheel. Blimey that would be tough. Maybe I'd just buy another Mini! As a kid my favourite was the Europa so maybe I perceive beauty in a different way.
What car would you have bought in 1963 - money no object?

It's a lovely car don't get me wrong, but I think it's a bit plain looking, give me a europa any day. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🚗
