Hey, thanks for reminding me I had that adapter. I tried to use a Roxio card and it outright refused to work. So, thanks Elgato for giving me the ability to record the games of my childhood. Booted up KOTOR and played around a little with it!
This helped alot. I didn't even think of using my Elgato to record my older game consoles since it didn't look like it had the right cords or ports, so as I was looking for a new capture card for older games, I came across this video. Got it all set up and my older consoles look great, so thanks alot man, you saved me alot of money for a new capture card that I didn't even need.
OMG! Dude! You are my hero! I can't tell you how happy I was to see my N64 actually turn on and receive signal from both the TV and Elgato recording software. I struggled more with setting up my PS3 with this thing (which I still am having issues as when it's capturing gameplay the recording screen in the software displays a green texture like static then stops when I pause the capture) than with the N64 (one-shot and it displays my game clear as day) Thank you so much again! :D
Great video! I didn't know the Elgato could record N64/GameCube footage. Your video was very useful and detailed. Enjoy the thumbs up, you earned it ;)
The Commodore 64 does have a composite video output where you can output to RCA video and RCA Audio (mono). I use this to connect mine to a RCA/VGA adapter I have so I can use an old 17" flatscreen monitor I have. A quick search on Google for "c64 composite video cable" lead me to cables costing anywhere from $6 to $20 so that might help for your C64.
Yep, the C64C should have the exact same ports on the back as the original C64. The only differences the C64C has is the case looks different, the motherboard is smaller and the SID chip is different. Some people say that the SID even sounds different. The composite out will be the 8-pin DIN connector.
It should, however, your TV will also have to support 480i, If you have a ps3 or xbox 360, Try hooking it up to your TV via HDMI, And switch the video mode to 480i (not 480p) If your TV still shows a picture, then it supports the old format.
For NES users. It has only two gates to plug your AV cable. AV cable can be connected from the side of the system. Just use the indicated colours. (Red and Yellow) Then connect the cables as intended on the composite. (As shown in the video, just leave the white one open. If you put the yellow one in the white, your screen will turn green and make weird noises.) the HDMI cable will not pick up the signal for the NES, so use the TV cable input of your NES to be able to play on your tv. Enjoy ;)
Thanks I just picked up a PS2 and got all setup. I'm going to be streaming some older games (PS2, Sega Genesis) and who knows what else. This helped me get configured really easily. I have an HD60 as well as the HD, and I recommend the HD if you are interested in retro game capture and streaming. Only go with the HD60 if you plan on using Next Gen consoles. Plus it's cheaper.
in that case, I'd suggest seing if you can find someone who has an old VCR, some of them support RF in, and RCA out, you could use that, you'll have to just set it to channel 3,
Ok so i'm about to start up a UA-cam channel, and I need the Elgato Capture card. Does it have to be this one only, or could it be any other capture card like the Elgato HD60, or some other versions I can't remember. I'm making walthroughs and reviews on some older games from the 2000's and I don't want to get the wrong capture card
Bob, I have been trying to find the answer to this for weeks (albeit not very hard). Thank you so much! I can't wait to record some Super Smash Bros (original) gameplay with my pals. Thanks again!
or just get a composite adapter. Small box with slots for the composite slots and would only need an hdmi cable which goes from the opposite side of that box into the tv.
I'm not getting a picture at all, neither on my elgato recording software or on my tv no sound either. And on my pc is shows up as having a signal but it's just a black screen
well they may have thought it dose not support non-hd devices, that's what I though too, most non-hd setups have red, white, and yellow wires, so it's easy to think that it will not work
Can't you just get splitters where you plug the component cables into a cord that has two component inputs, then put the Elgato into it, that way you can keep the cords in your tv and Elgato?
Here's the question.I want to hook up my Sega Dreamcast. And I have cables that's identical to your N64. I've connect the cables to the Dreamcast, but the problem is, how to connect the main cable to the TV, and the main cable needs to be connect to the computer?
Thanks for the information man because I've been looking to recording Hulk Ultimate Destruction from my original Xbox and I would absolutely love to go and just smash stuff again. To tell you the truth that game absolutely deserves a remake if anything at all so might as well try to get the word out. I do have a few contacts that might be able to make it happen so here's hoping.
Whenever I try to record my GameCube it appears way too bright. I've messed around with brightness/contrast settings and got it to look good on my TV, but on the software and recording (even if I have brightness all the way down and contrast half way down) it's still too bright, even though it's dark, if that makes any sense. Any help would be appreciated! :)
megagrey try using the option "convert standard definition to 640x480" that seems to change the output to progressive (or at least the software says so) it's been a while since I've recorded any older 2d games, so let me know if that dose not help.
BOBdotEXE I'm also having trouble when forced to use an upscaler (long story). Like in Zelda 1, when the Wizzrobes flash and appear...that nasty interlacing that doesn't get resolved no matter what I use to edit.
I love this video as it is very useful and informational due to the fact that I plan on making gaming videos eventually of console games. Including old-school video games from say the 80s or 90s as well as the 2000s. Of course for newer games as well that are only on consoles. SO thank you for making this awesome and informational video.
it only records to mp4, This software should not mess with any other capture software you have installed, as the elgato can only record using the official recording program.
Good afternoon. I have this capture card, I can record games from various platforms, less than N64, the image does not appear on TV, only on the computer. Do you know what it can be?
@@bobdotexe Of the Nintendo 64, only FIFA 99, appears on the PC and TV. I will do what you told me. Thank you very much for your attention. Have a good night.
If I wanted to stream my Sega Dreamcast games to Twitch via my Computer; do I hook the capture Card directly up to the computer? Hire much does that capture card cost?
How would you gto about hooking up a mic/headphones to this? I would get the HD60 but it dosent seem to support older consoles like the NES which is why I want this one
Thanks for posting and for giving feedback when you can even on recent comments, that's really awesome. I was trying to skim the comments if this had already been answered, but I didn't see anything on it as of yet... I have been working with my own game capture HD for a bit now, but I'm noticing that the overall quality is a bit blurry and has some significant color bleed, mainly with PS1 games, but the blur is true for all composite-cable consoles (such as my Gamecube). The footage you provide here looks like the image is coming in decently with little to no blur, so I'm wondering if you might know what the cause of this could be? Is there another setting I should monkey around with to get a cleaner image? Since the software and device installed properly, I don't think my computer is lacking in the necessary requirements to run/record (it is very new as well), but I was wondering if you had ever heard of this issue. I've been looking everywhere for some kind of answer, and have yet to find one. No worries if you are unsure, it seems to be something strictly on my end from what I'm seeing, just looking around to see if someone might know. Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work.
Does the Elgato game capture have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth built in for microphones or are you supposed to plug an microphone into the laptop/computer while you're recording?
im trying to record my pal ps2 playing ps1 games but I just get a few seconds of the game running then the video stops. also the video is sped up x2 for some reason. it appears on screen and says its recording but there must be a problem when it comes to exporting the video file. not sure what im doing wrong
Thanks for this. I want to record some Gamecube content. So this requires no more wires than what comes with the Elgato 100% ??? Sounds freaking awesome ! Liked.
Thanks for this, I really want to record gamecube footage. I have a question: do i need to buy extra cables to record from gamecube, or are the component cables elgato gives you good enough?
you'd have to connect your elgato to your TV via HDMI, and your TV will need to support the dreamcast's resolution via HDMI, Basically, just connect the elgato to the tv.
Great video! Thanks you! If I purchase the elgato, does it come with everything I need? (Beside the composite cables lol) But like all the adapters and such to plug in my n64 cables?
what's the name of the av/in cable that you're hooking the gamecube up to? I have a different one that doesn't work and I cannot find the one you're using anywhere online
Thanks for explaining about the component adaptor also supporting the older RCA/AV cables as well. That's what I was trying to find out, and couldn't find anything about it anywhere. I've been searching and searching for something that would capture footage from retro AND modern consoles, but all I ever found was ones that support the modern HD consoles. The only thing I don't like about this one is that there's no SDHC card slot.
I looked up the specifications and my TV does support 480i. Any idea what the problem could be? The software on the comp works with both wii and N64 but my TV only gets a signal from the wii.
I am unable to see any picture of game on pc elgato game capture software.. I use composit cables and hook PC-elgato-NES to my smart tv. In another words, I can't record nothing. Software just says "wait a minute" and screen it shows remains black. I can't do anything. Someone, please help!
Hey! One day ahead of you! Bought up an Elgato Game Capture HD on Thursday...I'll eventually be doing retro playthroughs, but I'll be using it to digitize my VHS anime and home movie collection first. :)
This helped, a lot. However, I have an issue. I'm recording with my Snes (yes, it works) however, i'm having REALLY bad lag. How do I fix that? I disabled almost everything and even paused the live recording thing. What do I do??
It's not the commentary it's the game itself. If I press a button on the controller the game won't respond till 3 seconds later. I have an hdmi cord to the computer idk if that has to do with it
-1Month late- I know, but you plug the HDMI out in your TV or Monitor and record with the software (which has the delay), your TV/Monitor will have no noticable delay.
I'm trying to hook my Dreamcast up to the Elgato. It shows up on the preview screen fine but WON'T show up on my TV due to the AV out going straight from the DC into the Elgato. Do you have any suggestions on how I can make it appear on my TV? It looks like you got SOMETHING to work as the Gamecube worked on your TV fine.
you'd have to hook it up to an hdmi tv, or use an HDMI converter box to connect it to a standard def tv. (i'm pretty sure hdmi to rca cables will *NOT* work)
I'm thinking of buying this Elgato game capture HD for my original Xbox someday next year since I already have the HD60 for my PS3 and Xbox One earlier this year.
+robertly3 Wait, why would you buy an hd 60 for the original Xbox? It would be better if you used the hd 60 for your ps3 and xbox one because they are much more likely to supporthigher resolutions and framerates.
+Zelda fan I bought the first Elgato game capture last Friday from Amazon and it came to the mail today. The HD60 is for my PS4 and Xbox One. The one that came from Amazon is for my PS3 and original Xbox. Just to clarify the misunderstanding.
Do you notice any frame lag when using this? Was gonna play SOCOM from my PS2 with a PS2 HDMI converter and stream but concerned about frame lag with the HDTV.
I have one question, if i was using a mic, would that be hooked up to the capture card or my computer (I don't HAVE a capture card yet so i don't know if has a port for a mic.)
When I try to record Gamecube footage, it always appears way too bright. I use a HDTV. I've tried messing with the brightness/contrast settings on the Elgato, but I can never get it to look like how it would without the Elgato. Any ideas on how to fix this?
it's "thereloadgamingtv" I only have a few gameplay videos right now, but I plan on adding a few obscure games like gex on the n64, and a few other old games
Okay so I just got the cat and I don't have a hdmi tv wht do I need so I can just record with out using hdmi cord are wht Are options bassicly I just want to play some old school games
Thanks. I found out after I posted that the EyeTV 3.5 and 3.6 software can recognize the Game Capture device as well, and updated mine. But it doesn't show me what options other than the what the source input is. I guess there is only one way to find out if I can record to .eyetv through that software, and that is to buy one and see. Any idea if you can adjust the MBPS of the capture, or if it is at a default setting? I think I'm going to order one of these this week. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for up loading this video I just got into the whole youtubing thing and I'm already tired of filming on the ps3 this helps a lot for when I play my game cube
I just found out I can use my legacy game systems on this. I've tried 3 different TV Tuners with no luck. Do you know if the files you save are in the proprietary ".eyetv" format, or if it automatically converts the file to another format? Also... I have EyeTV 3.5 software on my computer from my EyeTV HD. I assume that the Game Capture software is different. One software will not overwrite the other, do you know? Thanks, BTW... this video has been very helpful.
their is a chance that your HDMI port dose not like 480i, do you have any HDMI ports not labeled DVI? if so try those. I'll try to do some testing with different setups, later this week, if you want a faster reply, I'd suggest contacting elgato.
Just want to point out two things, I have that exact same Xbox 360 controller (it was an "walmart exclusive") and I have those exact same CA speakers for my PC
So i plugged everything in, and I have the captured video but my HD tv says it doesnt support it. I was going to play straight from my laptop that is recording the game until i remembered the delay that is there... :( is there anything i can do? :(
I like the channel and the video! I guess I'm not very qualified to give advice, but I would probably clean up a little bit before making a video next time! Still a great video tho!
Yup i can see the game on my laptop screen but not my tv. I have to find out. i tried going through the picture settings on my tv to change it but i didnt see a 1080 i or p to 720 or anything like that
Hey man quick question. My HDTV doesn't support 480i, but I have an SDTV that supports it. It doesn't have an HDMI port however. What do you recommend I do?
GTAfan9999 ok, well for a dvi monitor, you should be able to get a hdmi to dvi cable from amazon. for an VGA monitor you'd need a hdmi to vga converter box, as cables don't work. if that dose not work, you'd have to contact elgato for other options, as that's all I know of.
Great video. Thank you for the breakdown. Are you familiar with any input delay associated with this? I am worried that the composite to hdmi causes it. Thanks.
with the nes, it doesn't change at all. It is on 1 image. then it doesn't change at all. It wasn't paused, i changed the settings, just nothing is working.
Thank you for the set up video, I was thinking of either this or a simple dazzle dvc 100 capture device, this looks more universal and simple, I primarily want to record from the SNES, Sega mega drive, n64, ps1, Dreamcast, Xbox, ps2, and GameCube, will it work for all of these ?

you would need a computer running windows,
and a TV with HDMI, and that supports the format you'll be using, eg. 480p or 720p or 1080p
for this and may other, you hook up the mic to your PC.
so you can use a regular headset one, or a USB mic.
Thanks so much man, I’ve been very confused on setting up one of these for my let’s play channel especially for playing older gen consoles
or just get a composite adapter. Small box with slots for the composite slots and would only need an hdmi cable which goes from the opposite side of that box into the tv.

well they may have thought it dose not support non-hd devices,
that's what I though too, most non-hd setups have red, white, and yellow wires,

as far as I know, their is no adapter for that,
you'll need to get the rca (yellow, white, red) cables for that console.
Thanks for the video! Not long purchased elgato capture and you video helped me connect my retro consoles
It should work with the xbox one, the ps4 may need a special cable, like the ps3 uses.

if your TV dose not support hdmi, you'll need an hdmi downscaler, like this:

Yes it dose.
all you have to do is hook up the yellow, white, and red cables as I showed in this video.

none, their is about a 1/2 second delay in live commentary, (only the microphone audio is delayed)
but that's not a huge deal.

alright well I have a hdmi tv so thts a plus
It says "Mode not Supported" I was going through my tv manual and it shows 480 i & p but for input source: tv, av, component.
Just to clarify the misunderstanding.
robertly3 got it
Do you notice any frame lag when using this? Was gonna play SOCOM from my PS2 with a PS2 HDMI converter and stream but concerned about frame lag with the HDTV.
not on the tv side, only on the preview (pc)
I have one question, if i was using a mic, would that be hooked up to the capture card or my computer (I don't HAVE a capture card yet so i don't know if has a port for a mic.)
Hey there! If I were to change the dimensions of my screen to be square instead of the actual tv size, would the Elgato record it that way as well?
When I try to record Gamecube footage, it always appears way too bright. I use a HDTV. I've tried messing with the brightness/contrast settings on the Elgato, but I can never get it to look like how it would without the Elgato. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Riddy Prower Yeah, I'm having this exact same problem. If anyone could answer it would be great help!
I have a TV set by ORION and it isn't that big. Will the capture card still work, or is it only for HD sets like yours?
could this work with the red white and yellow cable
it's "thereloadgamingtv"
I only have a few gameplay videos right now,
but I plan on adding a few obscure games like gex on the n64,
and a few other old games
What video modes dose you TV support?
and what are you trying to record from(what console)?
How would you hook up an SNES to the elgato? I'm thinking it's a hell of a lot less complicated that what I'm making it out to be.
their is a chance that your HDMI port dose not like 480i, do you have any HDMI ports not labeled DVI?
if so try those.
I'll try to do some testing with different setups, later this week,
if you want a faster reply, I'd suggest contacting elgato.
can you still do this while using the gameboy player? out of curiosity
Just want to point out two things, I have that exact same Xbox 360 controller (it was an "walmart exclusive") and I have those exact same CA speakers for my PC
Wait so what else do you need beside the Elgato and original gamecube cords?
Nothing, The Av Cable Comes With The Elgato
you will need to connect the hdmi out to your tv in order to see the picture.
If you are good with a soldering iron you could mod the Atari 2600 to output composite. Search for "Atari 2600 av mod"
Just so we're clear, the device does work on a Macbook, right?
What do you recommend I do?
dose it support DVI or VGA?
Unfortunately no
GTAfan9999 ok, well do you have any extra monitors that use vga or dvi?
As a matter of fact, yes I do.
Can you record movies on this for movie reviews?
Great video. Thank you for the breakdown. Are you familiar with any input delay associated with this? I am worried that the composite to hdmi causes it. Thanks.
I have not measured it, but from what I remember it did not add any noticeable delay.
with the nes, it doesn't change at all.

It's weird my gamecube works with it and shows up on the hdmi but my ps2 only shows up on the laptop
Will 480p works? Not seeing an option for 480i on my 360.
This was realllllly helpful! Thanks a lot! How did I know you were gonna have Super Smash Brothers? :D
Can you still use the voice recording doing this?? I want to do LPs sold nes snes n64 thanks
yes, you can do live commentary on any video type, old console, or new.
you'll just need a microphone that can be attached to your computer.
I have the Xbox 360 white one. Does the elgato game capture HD work with that console??? Plzz respond soon
does this work with older CRT TVs (the old box tvs with no HDMI)
no, it only outputs to hdmi
What Type Of TV Do I Need? Also Do I Need To Purchase Any Other Cords?!? Please Help.
is there any control lag while recording? Specifically off of older consoles like n64 and Snes.
