Mary Chapin Carpenter - Songs From Home Episode 53: Farther Along And Further In

  • Welcome back to Songs From Home episode 53...
This week has shaken and shattered me, with the horrific assault on the Capitol this past Wednesday, the destruction and violence resulting in lives lost, and the absurd posturing that has followed by various bootlickers, seeking to claim moral authority - sickening, all of it.
I found myself walking in circles, dizzy with the bingeing of news and with varying degrees of fear and rage surging and then receding only to surge again… so I breathed, sang, got outside, walked for miles, hugged the dog, kissed the cat, cooked, read, did laundry, slept, avoided screens, called friends, listened to music, cleaned, did whatever it took to help me unscramble thoughts and calm myself, if only for a little while.
Sometimes efforts like those above help enormously, and sometimes nothing helps. That’s the truth of it, but then the sun comes up the next day, Angus brings me a stick to throw, White Kitty wakes up and for a few minutes, my little world is okay. It’s not about giving up and retreating from the things that we all, as a society, need to address and fix, but rather keeping our tanks full so that we have the energy and clear heads to be useful.
"Farther Along And Further In" from “The Dirt And The Stars” is about rediscovering something in one’s self, where “time, memory, love and grace/ in the kindred eyes of a strangers face/lead down to the deeper place”…it’s that stranger’s face that brings me closer to who I want to be, for as long as I am here. As I am reminded daily, we are all connected.
Until the next time, stay well, stay strong, wear your mask absolutely everywhere, and always #staymighty !

Our Sunday morning gatherings with folks from all over the planet are such a healing balm, dear Mary. To know that goodness and love and unity are still alive and well. May peace surround and fill us in that knowing. So grateful. Love to you, Angus, White Kitty and all who gather here. Maureen

Very true words. It’s easy to get lost among all the division and hate that bombards us on the news and forget all the people just getting by, doing the best they can for others, not just themselves. Struck me when you mentioned a Sunday morning gathering, how in a way it’s like going to church. I’m not particularly religious, but I do believe music can be that kind of religious or spiritual experience. It certainly unites people in a way that few other mediums do. I’m certainly happy to listen to Mary as my spiritual guide. Her songs are full of wisdom. Love to you too from the UK.

The lyrics to this song are far and away my favorite of all MCC’s songs. “Farther along and further in...we’re atoms and stardust circlin’...catching the Light then we’re gone again....farther along and further in... aah....”. The entire song seeps Wisdom...Opening up...Opening in...Enlightenment. Thanks so, so much, Mary. Namaste ( I honor the Light within You, always) 🙏🏻😌

Hi Mary so beautifully played and sung as always. So many people find a refuge of calm and peace here. In troubled times music unites us more than ever. Music has always been my religion in that sense and yours glows with wisdom and insight. Like you say, it’s easy to watch the hate and division on the news and get sad and angry. We mustn’t forget all the good people there are out there, getting along and helping others as best they can. We all need a little distraction from time to time and thank you for making these videos that take our mind to a better place, at least for a few minutes. Until the next time, stay mighty everyone.

It has been a hard year but don’t give up on “better”. Remember each journey we take starts with a small step. Peace grows when you stand up for it. Blessings come back tenfold if you give them away to all you meet. We can’t control others only ourselves, so if we do good our actions will speak louder than their words of hate. Bless you and Ms. Mary and Peace to all you meet and keep some in your heart for yourself.

Double like! On a trivial note, do you use funny tunings on the guitar? On a serious note, solidarity with you all over there. If there be a silver lining, only the most evil or tragic can be in any doubt now, and that may be a cleansing moment. At least that rock bottom wasn't worse. There's a very eloquent and powerful video from Schwarzenegger on Twitter that's worth catching - really sane and impressive, drawing on his youth in Austria. Much love from London.

I saw that talk too. (Before that I had thought of 1923 too.) Yes, "silver lining" of which you speak, also think this makes things abundantly clear to stop making excuses because this is rock bottom. Hope this country enters "a recovery program." Cautious about ptsd going viral on top of everything. So, MCC explanation today is to help process.

That’s the wind effect from the storm but even though the Sun is out it’s only 4 deg F above 0 & it feels like -11. Though we have sun our temps won’t get much above ten degrees if that? Yes, I do have a counselor, psychologist, I meet, virtually during the pandemic, every 3 weeks. I’ve been with her for a few years now, can’t recall how long and how I met her is a bit involved that I won’t go into now. While friends are somewhat handy they aren’t impartial. I do belong to a few groups, one I haven’t been able to attend due to the virus and they don’t do virtually meetings. It’s UsToo, a prostate cancer support group but I get regular emails from the head offices. The past year or so, another I’ve been attending is the FSHD Society webinars, held virtually also. This is a support group for my type of muscular dystrophy. They have 30+ chapters across the U.S. plus chapters in some other countries. At their Wellness Webinars I’ve interacted with individuals in S. Africa, Australia, Spain, SE Asia, etc. They’ve been a Godsend as even though the combined metro area here has over 250 thousand, l felt like I was the only one around here. I’ve been told what use to be considered one of the more rare types, it’s gotten larger or efforts to identify it has improved. 1 in 8,000 roughly persons have this type, doing the math you’d think there should be about 30+ individuals that share FSHD? So finding others, not around here yet, is comforting in a weird sort of way. This type won’t kill me and my neurologist said if a person had to have One this is the type to have. Our church congregation, which we haven’t been to in a couple years I miss but I get the monthly newsletter and the pastor posts his sermons online. I, also, use to meet the first Thurs of the month with a small group of retirees for breakfast, but sadly those are also on hold. Don’t know your age but each city here has its own senior group activities and there is CASI and the Plus 60s Group open to all, the others are open to all also. I hope these give you some helpful thoughts on where to look? Didn’t mean to get this long in reply to you but I’m big fan of counseling and reaching out. A couple sayings that I try to guide my life with are; If you don’t ask, the answer is always NO; the other is by Vince Lombardi a former American football coach- It’s not how often you get knocked down, it’s how often you get up. I hope this helps, Bill C

Hi from Helena MT! Thanks Mary for using that Martin D-28. Sounds great with your voice & you sound great as well. Rough time...would have been 12th wedding anniversary, but she departed last year. This tune kind of touches it. Thanks for singing.

Read her description. Please read the whole thing! This is reprinting only the turn at the end: ". . . It’s not about giving up and retreating from the things that we all, as a society, need to address and fix, but rather keeping our tanks full so that we have the energy and strength to do our part.
"Farther Along And Further In" from “The Dirt And The Stars” is about discovering something previously unknown in one’s self, where “time, memory, love and grace/ in the kindred eyes of a strangers face/lead down to the deeper place”…it’s that stranger’s face that brings me closer to who I want to be, for as long as I am here. As I am reminded daily, we are all connected.
Until the next time, stay well, stay strong, wear your mask absolutely everywhere, and always #staymighty !. . . " a partial quote from Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Please read her description of her process below each Songs from Home episode.

I love this song Mary. I did a cover a few months back and wondered if you were thinking of Aslan from Narnia's words at the end of The Last Battle when you wrote it?
