Hey kids, its Uncle Ben Eller back with Weekend Wankshop 315, in which we dive deep into one of the sickest, meanest, fastest, and HARDEST Metallica riffs ever: the solo section of Frayed Ends of Sanity from ...And Justice For All! Gallops, odd time signatures, chugs, spider chords... its gots it ALL! Super challenging and fun to play, too.
Riff breakdown starts at 2:30
Time signature explanation starts at 13:15
Today i'm using my Ibanez RG550 with Fishman Fluence Classic pickups into a Pepers Pedals Dirty Tree into a Mesa Dual Rec. This is all going into the Suhr RL/IR box, with an Ownhammer IR running.
What Metallica riffs should we break down next on a future lesson?! Let me know!
Thanks for watching my Metallica Frayed Ends of Sanity solo section riff breakdown! What MetalliClassics do you want to see covered next?
Thank you uncle Ben, I’ve waited for this for a long time
What about Eye of Beholder? \o/
What an awesome lesson! Thanks for all the hard work!
I'd love to see a lesson on Orion, specifically on the 'chorus/outro' section.
Actually was just searching the Ziggy stardust tune by Bowie but it didn't sound in the right tuning. Never had that problem here .
how bout "blackend"???
This whole album is full of hidden gems like this.
Full on, been listening to this album religiously since I was 6 and am still catching things I never noticed. The album that doesn't stop giving.
The bass is definitely hidden
Best songwriting of their career. Would be without a doubt the best album they made if it wasn’t for that one glaring problem everyone knows about
@@justindevoe9556 I wholeheartedly agree.
Only hidden by zero bass and +50 treble
AJFA is full of such hidden sweets. James is THE riffmaster.
It's a shame the mix is shit and they refuse to fix it.
The biggest hidden gem is Jasons playing is actually awesome, the And Justice For Jason remix of the album is amazing.
James, Mustaine and Iommi. Crazy to think two of them were in the same band at one point.
This song is so fucking underrated, should have been played on its whole in Seattle in '89
You mean at the 145% tempo they played everything else?
"Smshnthrdebndris
LuncyfundmeCnotstahpdbtryPndnoutgresnTrnsntobsionCnotkldbtry"
I remember reading an interview with James, and he said he found the song boring to play, which is why they didn't bother with it.
@@A_Final_Hit Crazy! It's a killer speedy track. Only James could find it boring....
@@A_Final_Hit I recall when the 20th anniversery of Justice came around and they played the album in its entirety, some one in the band had said this song in particular was a super bitch to play because of the time changes and riffs.
@@A_Final_Hit Lars also said resently that he hates eye of the beholder
At last! This is pretty much the only Metallica riff that I cannot get my head around, even after 30 years of trying!
I can't tell you how many times I've asked guitar channels for this haha
Good work Ben! 👍🤘🤘
God wishes!
Totally expected this to be a video from you when I clicked.
Frayed Edge of Sanity is probably the most underappreciated masterpiece of Metallica
This whole album is a masterpiece! AJFA is one of my favorites from them!
It is absolutely my favorite Metallica album. It is literally RIFF HEAVEN!🤘🔥 I love the first four albums - they were the soundtrack of my youth. But AJFA is in a league of its own. When it comes to sound quality/production the nod goes to Master of Puppets, but for me AJFA has the best metal riffs ever recorded. Funny thing is that for me the weird audio production (especially the drums) actually adds to the overall aesthetic and it just works. A true metal masterpiece!
Best solo riffs: All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss, My Apocalypse, Disposable Heroes, Battery, Damage Inc, The Unforgiven.
Best interlude riffs: Wherever I May Roam, Battery
Definitely All Nightmare Long
@@eetfuk3571 It's so raw, dirty and powerful
The riff during the last solo in my friend of misery
Best interlude riff: Struggle Within
Who doesn't warm up with James' The Unforgiven riff behind Kirk's solo?
I`d rather had this as an instrumental part and then Kirk lay a solo over a simplified version of this riff (just to keep Hetfileld`s wrist safe). This is too good to be in the background, I`d dare say in the Blackened league. Awesome lesson, Ben! One of the few shredders that gives the proper importance to the rythm guitar!
Ben is not a musician he’s a scientist
You should do Blackened next. What James plays under Kirk's solo is also kinda "math" part, Uncle Ben :)
Half-speed = load/reload vibe
Well, you ain't wrong.
I agree with Ben. Hets work on Justice is unreal.
I was more than ready for you to go into the absolutely KICKING riff right afterwards. Not as a lesson, necessarily, but because Frayed Ends makes me want to run through a brick wall
At the height of their powers!
The Frayed Ends of Sanity is one of the few songs I'm listening more on rhythm underneath the solo. The rhythm is definitely the best part of the song.
Best Metallica Riff of all time has gotta be the shortest straw intro riff.
"And justice for all..." es una escuela de las mejores guitarras rítmicas del metal
Frayed ends of sanity.. one of my absolute favorite tracks
Frayed Ends has always been my fav tune off Justice, although the album is banger after banger.
dude thanks so much! when you posted the frayed bridge riff i was hoping you would tackle the solo riff eventually. thanks for this and the tabs i'm so inspired right now. "Justice" is usually on repeat at some point every month for me. cheers!
Such a great lesson!! Kinda similar, I can't wrap my brain around the Fight Fire With Fire solo rhythm, and the dual harmony solo afterwards. Crazy the way it sits on the beat!
Thank you Ben! You are the man for breakind down these things! Keep up the good work. AWEZÖÖÖME!
Great breakdown. Just as you were explain the 5/4 to 3/4 change I was actually thinking that it was possibly just 4/4 straight through. My theory knowledge is limited, so I appreciated how you immediately spelled it out just as I was questioning it. Thanks Ben, you've taught me more in 30 minutes than I would learn in weeks on my own.
I love learning from your vids, Beller. That right hand is silky. Plush those Fishman pickups are vicious. Keep rocking brother, you're making us all much better guitarists \m/
By far the most helpful/simplest of guitar note by note break down tab series 🤘
Thank you so much for this amazing lesson.
That is one of my favorite riffs ever and did't expect for anyone to show how it goes in such a detailed way.
You are one of a kind, but I guess you now it ;)
Thanks for quality content, bring us more Metallica! Cheers
This song also has the pre-solo riff which is absurdly underrated in Hetfield's catalog. It's like the Damage Inc bridge riff, like that good.
Except the bridge riff in Damage Inc was written by Kirk
@@ali965 True, the comparison was about the riffs being underrated tho
This was always my favourite song off the album, it's filled with so many bad ass riffs!!
Great Video as usual , Thank you for putting the tabs in the Video so I can pause .
It is just beyond me how you work this out. But pleased you can it aint happening this life time for me. Cheers
Wow man..that's awesome..I struggle with that part but I might be able to lean it now thanx to you.
thank you so much for this. This part has always been the challenge to get the feel of and as you have pointed out, the tabs online SUCK! You sir, are Legend!
I wish more guitarists, including myself, could think this way and approach riffs in more of a drummer-type mentality. Awesome job!
That's because a drummer helps him write and construct the riffs. Lars is the ringleader behind the curtain, as hated or discredited as he is to some.
@@MetallicA4658 James says his guitar style is like playing drums. Granted Lars helps out with song writing, but Hetfield actually is a decent drummer in his own right.
@@ryanjacobson2508 his recent interviews with the whole "Metallica 40: how to for bands" thing he describes its the simplistic approach Lars has to the guitar that James likes. Gives him a nice foundation to start with and freedom to build it up
Hell yeah! I was just playing along to that song this morning!
Those fishmans have that proper grind/bite. I love the way you dial-in clean thrash tone. I'm an older (85') dude and muchly appreciate the gooder guitar sounds. Thanks Ben, for showing the young shredders how to tighten it up.
Such a winner - much love my friend🤙🏼
My favorite Metallica album (and my absolute favorite uncle lol!). Uncle Ben, could I perchance request for a new and updated studio tour? Would love to see that!
You break it down really well, thanks uncle ben!!
Ben!! Could you do some videos with some riffs of Load/Reload that you like? I think that those albums are so underrated.
Some brooding, eerie gems on Load, for sure. Im a huge fan of The House that Jack Built. The talkbox solo on that is really unusual and cool aswell. Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn and Fixxer are a terrific trilogy of tracks that are great examples that, they didnt have to be all fast and furious thrashin' about to be heavy.
One of my favs. Great job!
And there it was. Many high fives to you Uncle B!
Riff right after the solo is one of my all-time favorites!!
"Has more chugs and gallops than Stone Cold Steve Austin riding a horse."
I am a stringsman, and your lessons are helpful. But damn your jokes are next level.
Haven’t watched but a fraction of your videos , but today I’m taking the next logical in purchasing a product that appeals to me, at a price I’m willing to pay. This decision was finalized when I ran across this Frayed Ends rhythm breakdown video. Thanks for being so metal !!! Heading to Patreon now . BodyDomeLight out !
sick tone bro, love it!
When we covered any Metallica tunes, waaay back in the day, I'd always take James' parts because I enjoyed them so much.
Your tone is huge, I love it.
Awesome guitar tone man...
Dude "I like things that are nice" is a way of life. No better excuse needed👌
My favourite metallica album, packed full of insane riffs.
Yay, more Metallica breakdowns from Uncle Ben!
Nice man. I would argue that those are still pretty prominent, even behind Kirk's solos. But I was the kinda kid that listened to all of my favorite music on headphones or ear buds, so it was easier to here a lot of what's going on in the songs. I had no idea what they were doing, but it was always badass. Great video brother. I've repeated that section so many times while listening, but never actually learned it.
Great song! Thank you🙏🤘🤘
Awesome rhythm skill my friend
Uncle Ben making rhythm guitar great again!! 🤘🏻
Awesome great music song great guitar 🎸
Love the tone!
You can do a masterclass on this tune
keep rocking man💪🏼
Thanks for the video! There a lot of riffs on ...And Justice for All (album) that need some workout. Frayed Ends of Sanity (Verse and Pre-chorus), Eye of the Beholder (Intro, Post-Verse, Interlude), To Live is to Die (Acoustic Intro). Keep up with the great work! Now I will try to play the riff.
My absolute favorite Metallica song and riff sets.
19:16 - one word: THANK YOU!
When I was doing a cover of this song, I thought the bridge riff was the most difficult to figure out but when I started to listen closely to this solo riff, I thought otherwise. Fantastic riffing. Ha!
That is a helluva right hand workout!
Thank goodness we have the rough mix version from the 30th anniversary release so we can really hear this section in all it's glory.
I've always played the first riff with 7 and 6 on the E since it feels more consistent with the other breakdown/pre-solo riff (which I believe uses 7-6 on the E but 6-5 on the A). Sounds like I need to go back and listen close to that rough mix version again to know for sure
I've always loved the alternate of the main riff from Battery, that James plays under the solo.
this is Metallica's very best album of them all , and i hate the fact they don't play this song live more often , such a great song.
They played it when I saw them in 2018 and it blew my mind
I have always said, mostly to myself, that this song is the riff masterpiece of all time.
The guitar stuff behind the solo is really sick! I learn fight fire with fire for a few months now. What i am struggling with the most? The galopp part of the rhythm guitar during the solo!
Thanks for another great vid, bought 5 tee’s, a face mask and love the blanket.
Would love me some Stanger /s
Huge fan of the riffing up until Black.
Oh shit. TFEOS!!!! That song has my favorite riffs in the entire Metallica catalogue.
This is awesome man! Can you do a breakdown of the harmony at the end of Eye of the Beholder
AJFA is the crown jewel in Metallica’s catalogue. Relentless but ultimately very satisfying to listen all the way through. My favourite is “Harvester of Sorrow” but there isn’t a weak track on the album. It also has, for me, their best instrumental (To Live is to Die); that middle section is so achingly beautiful and sad at the same time.
James is my all time favorite!!
Hi Ben, thanks for your hard work on clearing the path through the riffage jungle.
I've been trying to decipher the last notes in Frayed Ends' guitar harmony bridge section (the bar that finishes up at the end of 4:01 / right on 4:02 , where the drum fill begins before the pre-solo riff). I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like the three last notes are each simply an E.
It's always sounded to me that there was another little 16th-note hammer on in this part also (just as there is with the previous bars) - However upon closer inspection, it seems that it is actually all 8th notes in these couple of bars.
Anyway, looking forward to your two cents on breaking down this little section also some day ;-) , it'd be much appreciated!
Gotta be honest man, I dont think Ive ever noticed this riff. Its awesome
Damn!! That's some heavy shizz right there!! I'd love to see a detailed unpacking of all the melodic/harmonic lines on the Justice album & how they deal with that stuff in a live sense with only 2 guitars!!!
That fact is a fact!! The depths of Metallica.
I do the bleed over thing a lot in my writing. In my head the idea/phrase is what I'm keeping track off not the time signature.
Look at that right hand go! 🤘
When you said this album was when Metallica was being “hard just for the sake of being hard” I laughed-it’s funny because it’s true!
Finally. Thanks step uncle Ben.
Thanks for this lesson. One simple (well, not that simple as the guitar solo). Have you planned to upload the guitar solo for this song? Or any of the And Justice for all solos?
Their best album imo. No question.
You are great teacher Ben. I wish I had internet and youtube when I was 15 in 1989...but I'm rocking at 47, nevermind!
I think the rhythm behind the Blackened solo is my favorite.
I’ll second the bro-ham that mentioned Load & Reload. Much more bluesy records and stripped down but are chock full of massive riffage. Get on after it Uncle Ben 🤘
Home school joke was 👌 love your channel
Patiently waiting on that testament video…
haha this is insane mate. sounds so good
One of my favorites 🤟
Did you delete the middle single coil pickup on that guitar? I have a black rg550. Great lesson I still have to run from my step sister after a similar home schooling incident lol.
Yeah guy I bought it from had put the HH guard on there
"This section is longer and more confusing than my homeschooled sex ed class." - HAHA
I was trying to understand the counts but I got floored😄
Killer track! That whole record though
Never mind the sick riffs, what are using to get that tone!!??
Guess I should’ve waited. 😂
That Dirty Tree + a Dual Rec is just crushing.
Those drums also sound amazing! What are you using for that?
Superior Drummer 3, Man of Sand kit! My favorite!
