I’m so tired of the narrative that artists MUST make themselves pop first before a label steps in. That’s CAP! Labels just don’t WANT to do the work anymore. They don’t want to take the risk & spend the money. There are still labels (not many at all tho) who still believe in real artist development. Take Mixed by Ali’s label for example. He recently started a label called Noname Records. The artists they’ve signed so far had very little buzz before they signed. I followed them from day 1. Them niggas had less than 2K followers, but Ali & his label believes in building them from ground up as long as the talent is solid. & Ali himself is an extension of the TDE camp. So nah, labels just lazy as fuck these days. Artists are ARTISTS. Not every artists is a content creator, a gimmick, a social media influencer, etc all at once. Some artists need assistance in those areas.
As a die hard TDE fan, I think they’ve lost their mystique.
