    For those of you who run one of those at a time, and we use a 120VAC inverter that clips onto the car battery. Make sure that the Watts of the inverter is greater than the "tool" and you should have no problems. We have used an cheap inverter from harbor freight for 3 years this way now without any problems. Much easier than hauling a generator to the out yards for us.
    Bob, thanks for adding in the text descriptions to these videos, lots of good data there, I usually pause each time to make sure I get all the meaning.

    Bob on your comment on the Instantvap battery usage,that is true if you are using the 5ah battery like most people have around the house. That battery will only do about 6 hives at 4 grams. I had that issue. After talking with Rob at Lorobbees I found that you can use the 12ah battery and treat a whole lot more colonies on just one battery. I don't know how many hives you have in each yard but a yard of 32 to 40 would be treated on one battery, especially at the 2 gram dose. You need another battery for the next yard. Some guys run a charger with their generator and recharge the batteries as they come off the vaporizer. Instantvap is very fast and once you use one you won't want to drag cords around anymore. Also it is much safer for the operator. With cords you have a chance of electric shock.

    I must share that after the first season of using a much higher dose than approved, 3 grams per deep, I had significantly less winter losses this year. Anecdotal for now, but has my attention going forward.

      ´After like 40 years plus we didn´t get a grip on the problem. Instead we increase the dosage resulting in more resistant mites. That´s a way to select mites. Anyway I have to increase too...🥲 So you would probably be better off without treating. Selecting from what survives. Meanwhile the rest of the beekeeping world supports all Australian beekeepers for the work we didn´t get done to this point.

    I am convinced mites are easily managed with splits and brood breaks for spring, extended OA use during during and summer, then Apigaurd in august and finally, vaporization in December. I have only ever had small nucs abscond with temps over 100 up to 110!!! It's totally ecceptable in my book.

    If our industry had more investment or involvement, we’d have adequate dose recommendations. But that’s a double edge sword. Are beekeepers actually engaged to allow for proprietary investment? I find a lot of push back from beekeepers when new technology is introduced into our industry.

      I think it’s hard for us to invest when we do not have a lot of greenbacks after everything is said and done. On top of that if you give your money and research is done and products are made they then show they are all about profits for themselves and place pattens. Giving them money is also no guarantee that they will not se your money wisely or that they will achieve anything notable. We need more George Washington Carvers in this world.

      I think this is where the hobbyist comes in. I’m not trying to turn a profit. I spend money like the crazy person I am because I love having bees.
      I think the industry could look to some of us to spend a bit more money on products as well as take risks with treatments because if all my bees died I would be sad but not financially ruined.
      The backyard beekeeper is a market for trinkets and generally underutilized and under appreciated for our passion.
      If my state university called me tomorrow and asked if I would be willing to participate in a study I would bend over backwards.
      If they called and wanted to know if I would donate to a program I wouldnt just write the check, I would host bake sales.
      It can’t be all on the farmers, you guys get hit in the teeth enough. Point those research biologists in our direction, we have cash to spare and want to contribute in meaningful ways

    I always use 4g/box when I apply OAV. Haven’t had any issues or observed any ill effects to brood/bees. It works well. I think you’ll make the same observations.
    A 30mL med cup makes loading the doses into the caps much easier. Just scoop the OA into the med cup and gently tamp it down. Then, mate the inverted empty cap with the upright loaded med cup and flip them over. The dose will fall perfectly into the cap. Give the med cup a little tap & twist before removing it. Voila.

    Hi Bob and thanks again for all the great videos and information.
    I take it you sampled the mite load in a few nucs via mite wash and extrapolated that to the entire yard when determining what action to take. You described it as low or moderate. What sort of numbers were you seeing before you decided on this particular treatment regimen?
    Also, some time after you complete the second treatment, will you sample again to verify effectiveness, and what is the highest level you would consider acceptable to take no further action?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  10 місяців тому

      We were just finding a few in a wash but I need to see one or less for this time of year and yes we'll check again after the second treatment. I've learned the hard way to always spot check after treating to make sure it worked well.

    Couldn’t agree more with your thoughts on the dosage for single nucs and deeps. We run Dadant here as you know and they are big frames and need a lot of oxalic acid and I’m finding a double dose of two. 5 g seems to be really effective. It’s interesting you’re talking about the other vaporisers on the market. The funny thing is I just bought a second vaporiser which is very similar to the pro vape which I know you have in America and Canada. I was here is called a Sublimox . I think we talked about this before but my point is, I’ve just bought a second one when the new vaporisers come out and you know what I’m not bowing to pressure I’m using what I paid for and it will probably last three or four years at least so I’m not gonna be using the new generation vaporisers cause, I find they work just as well, but I know that’s open debate. You use what you have you use what you invest in. I use a electric lead from my inverter on my truck which works absolutely great and as you say you do need to invest in a lot of batteries no matter what anyone says you need a lot of batteries. Great video Bob take care.

    Nice and easy that way to work it, it seems less stressful on the bees. Do you like not closing the entrance up?
    I ran extension power to my bee yard, it has made it so convenient.
    I'm only in the 20 range so with 1 vape it doesn't take to long, but more extra caps and a 2nd vaporizer would make it quick and done.

    Hi Bob, thank you for sharing your experience, knowledge and making videos. @1.00 you highlighted you'd OA treat further etc. I'm curious to know what approach you adhere to for multiple OA treatment?
    I have previously mention to you I use a 3 day spaced treatment of OA for 16 days. However last year my OA 3 day treatment continued for 54 days (my records not to hand at the moment) to bring Varroa down to multiple zero kill. On the 16 day the kill rate was going up and continued to be steady. My treatment with OA started in October and ended in mid November. I concluded that there were 2 possible causes for this unusual recorded event. Robbing and Drones. By November both had finished and the numbers became zero.
    Spring treating from the second week of February returned zero's over 16 days.
    The amount of OA used corresponded to what you've mentioned in your video about 4 gms. Re-infestation with varroa is a problem if OA is used too early.
    I recorded every smidgeon of data.
    I now only have a small number of colonies. My method of OA treatment is too intense for commercial beekeepers.
    Bob, what do you do about predatory wasps etc that target weak colonies? I haven't seen your workers putting out traps.

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  10 місяців тому

      I would probably do at least five treatments, perhaps more, four or five days apart. I think that no matter how close together the treatments are the duration of time needs to be at minimum longer than a normal brood cycle. It sounds like you definitely accomplished that.
      Even though they do cause trouble we don't do anything for controlling wasps yet.

    • @user-go9hb4td8j
      @user-go9hb4td8j 10 місяців тому +1

      @@bobbinnie9872 Thank you Bob for your reply. I use the 3 day cycle as OA levels return to normal after 3 days (as I understand). Using screened floors (varroa floors) to catch dropped debris allows me to fully monitor the colonies (including nucs). These floors are vulnerable to wax moth larva hosting and other local issue in different areas.
      Bob, what do you do other than washes to monitor for varroa? Do you use sticky sheets to monitor varroa kill while doing an OA treatment?
      I monitor the 2 days after (each 3 day cycle) treatment, finding the kill drop information enlightening. I know which colony has the highest infestation etc.
      Note, I use a OA applicator called a "GasVap" which I have adapted slightly to accommodate wet windy weather and have multiple "caps" to apply OA. OA crystals reforming and causing pipe blockage of the extensions used is prevented by warming the pipe. OA crystallisation is caused by cooling, stop the cooling (using a warmed replaceable pipe) and blocking doesn't happen.

    Hi Bob!
    You mentioned that you plan on using 8 grams of oxalic acid on your double deeps. I have two questions regarding how you will do this:
    1. How will you get 8 grams of oxalic acid to fit in the ProVap 110 cap? Or are you simply going to use two caps containing 4 grams of oxalic acid and vaporize the colony twice?
    2. If you are applying all 8 grams through the entrance of the colony, do you think you will get an even distribution of oxalic acid throughout the colony? Are you concerned that the bottom deep (specifically near the nozzle of the ProVap 110) will be hyper concentrated where as the frames in the upper deep will have a significantly lower concentration of oxalic acid?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  10 місяців тому +3

      We could do it twice or use two guns at one time. There probably will be a heavier concentration just inside the entrance but although it won't be perfectly dispersed throughout I think the rest of the space will be good enough.

  • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc
    @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc 10 місяців тому

    Bob I like overwintering new colonies from splits in double deep nucs. In that case I am assuming I would use 4 grams of OA considering it is 10 frames,although the top box is mostly food stores with maybe a little brood depending on the population. I like overwintering in the nucs because the bees seem to like moving up more than spreading out.

    I see so many people talking about using more than the allowed dose of OA and they seem to be the same people complaining about high mite loads. It surprises me that they dont see the relation. We treat 2 times with formic, July and Oct then clean up with OAV at the legal dose 2 to 3 times over winter and early spring. For 4 yrs mites have been below 1% in June. @@bobbinnie9872 Bob I follow you religiously and pay attention to all you do. You are one of the few guys on UA-cam that actually understand what you are doing. I think we will have to agree to disagree on this 1 topic and thats ok. Its what keeps beekeeping interesting. I am 1 of the few people I know that use formic more than once per year, mostly because of the warmer than normal falls but I am one of the many that use the legal dose of OAV and no extra. I have good results. I think the key is realizing we will never reach zero. I dont repeat when after a routine treatment I get counts of 1 or 2. Bees will have mites. They tolerate low levels and I just dont see the logic in the quest for a zero count to justify 3 or 4 times the legal dose or countless repeat treatments. Sometimes less is more. Its a snowball affect and we have all seen it with other treatments that are now useless or becoming useless. Mites are adapting to heavier usage of OAV whether we want to admit it or not. Ill be following you as always to watch how you handle the situation. I only maintain a little under 200 hives so I dont have the huge sampling that you do but I feel like its enough that my program makes sense with the results we have. Maybe it also has something to do with the difference in our climate compared to yours. Thank you for all of the vast knowledge you share with us. It helps make us all better beekeepers

      We do a lot of artificial growth by feeding light sucrose syrup at the right time. Of course nothing beats Mother Nature and a good nectar flow. Making small splits that can grow up in time for winter and leaving the original colony big enough to make honey is one way.

    Bob: Why don't you try some Formic Pro strips in some nucs. Based on the treatments I did here in Columbia, Tennessee over the last 3 weeks with some daily high temps reaching 99 degrees, I had good mite treatments with no brood or queen damage. Granted handling a formic acid application in hot weather is not that pleasant and probably no more hazardous than vaporizing OA, on a nuc I would use a half of a Formic Pro strip and make sure the top side is covered with the wrapper to slow down the formic acid evaporization rate. Dick Brickner

      Hi Dick. To start with thanks for the email with data last week. I appreciate you keeping me in the loop. We could do that with formic. I will probably be playing with Formic Pro in the spring to learn more.

    • @randallmuir5570
      @randallmuir5570 10 місяців тому +2

      I have used the same approach with Formic Pro. Works just fine for nucs with a mites above treatment level if you just reduce the dose appropriately. And also in extremely hot weather, not a problem if you reduce the rate of offgassing by covering the top of the strip with the wrapper as mentioned. Frankly, what’s needed is a gel formula which releases the formic acid in a more gradual way. As the formic pro is today, if one measures the amount of formic acid released per day, it skyrockets during the first day or two, and then during the last week there’s hardly any active ingredient being released. There’s only a short period of time where it’s in the ‘sweet spot’. Need to find a way to even that out and keep it in the ideal range for effectiveness against the mites without unnecessary harm to the bees.
