      You turn that around on everyone - you make them feel ashamed that they are not intersex - you own it! Walk around with your head held high, strut it! I dreamed I was naked at school, I strutted around and made them all feel ashamed and stupid they weren't naked, soon all my peeps were naked (yuck) but that was my dream lol. You just take that freaky and love it and show it off! Did you see Pidgeon's t-shirts? Owning it! Hugs and Love! You are special and its okay :o)

    • @corawood2353
      @corawood2353 6 років тому +17

      The problem (I believe, correct me if I’m wrong) is that you can’t sue because this shit is legal. The parents had to sign a bunch of forms to give the doctors consent to do this to their child, and in those forms were a bunch of legal stuff making it impossible to sue the doctors because the parents signed them saying that everything they were doing was okay.

      @@keketubeler doctors lie to their patients all the time.

    • @yetanothertop
      @yetanothertop 6 років тому +10

      @@corawood2353 Of course surgery is legal. Further, some genital cutting in the United States is legal (such as Male Genital Mutilation and intersex "correction" surgery. That does not, however, grant doctors immunity from malpractice suits. It's malpractice to knowingly harm a patient. With full knowledge that the he (the genital cutter calling himself a doctor) planned to do a radical citorectemy (removing the outside and the root of the clitoris), the doctor told the parents that he was using a "new" procedure (a lie) and that he was just going to shorten the clitoris to make it cosmetically more appealing (a lie). It's not informed consent for a parents to agree to one procedure and have a doctor preform another procedure that he'd planned on doing the whole time. I saw a documentary about 10 years back where the parents of a boy had refused to have him castrated to turn him into a girl. His genitals were intersexed but, he thought of himself as a boy and was about 5 years old. The doctor talked the parents into some minor surgery to "correct" something the doctor thought was wrong. During the surgery the doctor castrated the boy. The parents sued for malpractice and won big money in a settlement.

    It should be illegal to do anything to a child's body until they are old enough to consent 😡

    • @chrisrelhard
      @chrisrelhard 7 років тому +50

      it should be illegal to perform unnecessary surgeries on a child before they can be properly educated to consent, especially cosmetic surgeries. it's absolutely horrific how much some doctors bullshit parents into thinking unnecessary surgeries are necessary. i had a long talk with my cousin the other day who just had a beautiful baby boy. the doctors wanted to take him in to fix his "protruding ears". nothing functionally wrong with them, just not "aesthetically normal". i am so glad she talked to me before going in for the consultation because i sent her in with a whole arsenal of questions. what it came down to was them arguing his quality of life would be decremented by kids teasing him. WE DON'T SOLVE BULLYING BY CONFORMING THE VICTIM TO A TEMPLATE NORM! especially without said victim's consent. we going to start giving babies nose jobs now?
      and on top of it all, surgery on intersex children is irreversible. they choose a box to fit the child into and if they don't fit? welp, whoopsie daisy not only are more surgeries required but there's no way of rebuilding what they might have once had. not to mention that their decision making often resolves to what's easiest, mainly chopping things off.

      My parents were given a choice when I was born to have a risky eye surgery because my eyes were crossed and it was really a 50-50 chance that I would lose my sight or I would be able to see I have a normal life. They did the surgery I can see and have a normal life. If they waited until I could have consented I would have already been blind

I know the conference was in Colorado this past year and wanted to go, especially since I have an AIS friend who lives in the Denver area. Arizona might not happen because I'm leaving the country to go teach English in Thailand. Lol. Not sure when I'll be back to visit the States.

Doctors are humans too. They could'nt hv just left Pigeon in that situation. It was their job to fix it. In that century & time they probably did the best they could for a child, so that baby could grow up to live a normal life like everyone else. But maybe things didn't work out in the best possible way.

    Thanks for these videos. People are so misinformed and ignorant (including myself tbh). Sometimes it's like intersex people aren't even people, and it's more comfortable for people to believe that than to admit that there are exceptions to their rules.
    I'm not intersex (as far as I know) but I'm nonbinary. Over the years I've had a few nonbinary friends who only found out they were intersex AFTER coming out as nonbinary. It's pretty crazy.

      Non-binary means that you identify outside the binary categories of female/male. Seeing those categories as something potentially oppressive and ignorant of even the reality of ppl who don't fit those two categories biologically or emotionally/mentally/on the level of the soul..

    As you told the story my shock, then rage all became tears that are still running. I can't stop thinking of a little four year old baby lying in a hospital bed, pre-op, with so much faith in "the grown ups".....ugh..
    this was a mutilation of a sweet little child.
    Grown adults looking at a little child's genitalia and a) manipulating/lying to parents using their greatest weakness, their child's health, and then b) surgically deforming that child... it's vile. a tragic horror. You didn't deserve any of that. Even without your bravery and confidence that is so amazing you developed, you are so wonderful and always were since the moment you were born. I am so, so sorry...

      Doctors use that with normal kids all the time too, since the day they are born: vaccination and other bullshit tests and meds. For doctors children are not humans but test subjects. Almost everybody on the planet has been affected by this and we are all victims. All we can do now is protect our children and their children.

    5:30 to get to the content about the actual clitorectomy. No offence meant. Having watched the first two videos, I was just very eager to get to the conversation involving the clitorectomy.
    These mutilations (because that is what they are, not legitimate surgeries) are unacceptably vile and disgusting. 1.5 centimeters? That's barely over half an inch, ridiculous and disgusting. I am glad that we live in a time when research is so easy. I imagine that in the 80s, it would be difficult to find information on being intersex. Today it's as easy as an internet search.

    I'm currently pregnant and I'm so sick of hearing "is it a boy or a girl?" It's like people are invalidating intersex individuals and they justify it by saying only the binary genders are normal. Yes, it's true that being intersex is rare, but female and male aren't the only normal things a person can be. If my child does turn out to be intersex, I refuse to make decisions on their behalf. I fully believe in the person being able to give their consent.

    Pidgeon - you've done a really good job explaining something I, and probably most have never understood; making me have sympathy/empathy for the plight of intersex babies and children/adults in this misunderstood category of gender and disgust at those doctors who play god just for the desire to fit slot a into slot b and misleading parents and patients because they are too "busy" to care about feelings as they just want a male to match male and a female to match female. However I know they are now trying to change that in many places here in the US, lets hope they move along quicker for the health of these 1 in 2000 babies every year. Your video should help future parents in their decision making process, to get tests and carefully question doctors and maybe even letting their child alone until their child decides their gender - that would be the BeST case scenario! Thank you for sharing from your own personal experience! This is invaluable!

    It’s really nice you are making these videos I feel like growing up I have been unintentionally ignorant to so many things even towards my own identification as a lesbian and it’s nice to have a platform like UA-cam where not only can I get educated on these not talked about things but also hear first hand stories because without personal accounts it’s hard to navigate what is true and what isn’t especially on a topic like intersex that clearly has a lot of misinformation being distributed by even doctors

    God, this is so messed up. I'm in uni right now hoping to go into the medical field, and as i keep learning about all of this "state sanctioned violence" as you put it, it's so disheartening but at the same time continues to drive me to talk to people and make them aware about medically unnecessary surgeries, especially on children. Whether it's something as common and bening seeming as male circumcision on newborns or completely unnecessary surgeries like the ones you were subjected to, if the person cannot or willing consent and their life isn't at risk, the surgery shouldn't be done. Violating someones bodily autonomy like that is never, ever okay. I can't imagine the struggles you've must've gone through. Thank you for sharing your story❤stay strong

    It's kinda scary to think that you could go through a large part of your life not knowing what was actually in your body? Like, you have no way of knowing what chromosomes you have or whether you have gonads or not unless someone tells you! And if doctors don't tell your parents so they can't tell you, then you could possibly never know! that's insane!

    this video is from a year ago but i found it interesting because i go to hopkins and we were talking about intersex and AIS specifically in my neuro class (and this dude too). i think there's still such a debate about this, but these doctors are probably going the easy way because these surgeries are easiest done the younger the person is. However, changes usually only happen after puberty (which is when some parents let their children decide if they want surgery) so... uh
    it's upsetting that doctors feel the need to push the categories of only 2 sexes (esp because the only reason why they did a clitorectomy was because it was beginning to look like a penis - and oh no no that couldnt happen -.-).
    so i just think you're really cool and am proud of you for saying this :)

    I can only imagine the rage you must feel for what has been done to you. Although you say your parents wanted to do what was best for you it turned out that it wasn’t best. And it negatively impacted your life. At least anyone watching your video won’t make the same mistakes so you have brought some good out of what you have suffered (and I use that word intentionally). Why did they take it all? Obviously even by their standard that makes no sense. They wanted to make you like other girls, well what they did doesn't do that since they took it all. They should not have done anything to you especially since it wasn't going to hurt you. I'm shocked about all this to begin with but I am also shocked they would do anything that was not needed. I mean everyone is different and they don't try to make us all the same in other ways. Sorry that you had to go through all this. However it is beautiful that you are such a kind hearted caring person. You don't seem to want to punish the world even though this happen to you and that is amazing because many people that go through something so traumatic want to punish the world or hate it a little. You are amazing. Like really. I wish we were friends. You are just amazing. 💟 Much love and blessings to you each and every moment of each and everyday.

I'm not an intersex person myself, but I am a nonbinary trans person, and I see all the time how my community in particular likes to co-op the intersex struggle when it benefits our argument, but otherwise ignores the intersex community altogether. I know I've been guilty of it myself in the past, in my ignorance, and I want to work to be a better ally to intersex people.
