- THE 21 BEAD WRIST MALA
The 21 bead wrist Mala is both decorative as well as being a useful Meditation tool. Use the Mala to count your breaths. The 21 beads represent the number of breaths one normally breathes in a two minute period. Each time you take a complete breath pass a bead between your fingers, when you come to the guru bead, the larger bead, turn the Mala around and start over. If you do this five times you have meditated for 10 minutes. To improve concentration place the count at the gap at the top of the inhalation to bring about more energy, or the bottom of the exhalation for more relaxation.

Great video. Very helpful, thank you 😊
Thank you so much for this video I appreciate it this I have subscribe to your channel may your journey in life be peaceful, my friend
Wonderful information. Gave new joy to my very old malas.
Does this include traditional kurdish mala beads bracelet? Thank you
It needs to be multiples of 9 not 3 and it’s 108 beads not 109 (although it can be sometimes) however the bracelet beads are in smaller beads I’m trying to figure out why 21 is also used since it does not equal to 9 ?
Thank you for video. Do you know which hand I should hold spesific Stones like Amethyst Onyx mala either wrist or 108 version mala? Same with aquamarine please. I ordered as well aquamarine 108 mala with tassel.
Thank you
Hi Shane how do i do a 108 chant on a 21 bead mala ..do i go x5 rounds = 100..how do i count the 8 left ....to make 108 ....please help
Great video. I have a question, Shane. Instead of flipping the mala to restart, can't you just go literally backwards (push the beads) until you hit the Guru bead again? You still reach the required number. Is it just tradition? I've also found that the mere act of going bead to bead puts me in a meditative state alone. No need to involve a mantra or the breath.
Thank you for the question Jason, I see no reason why you couldn’t shift into reverse when you come upon the guru bead. It would feel strange for me to do so but that is only because of the habitual hand movement.
@@ShaneWilson Understood. Thank you for the reply, Shane. I enjoy your channel.
I like how Shane described it as a “turn” and “change of direction”. Changing directions or turning things around may be the reason you’re meditating in the first place. So maybe the flipping might make you more mindful of what your purpose is. I also had it drilled into my head for a long time that going back the same way you came was bad mojo and dangerous-but if it’s working well for you-keep on keeping’ on!
Can i make it a 27 bead mala instead of a 21 bead mala...so i can do x4 rounds ..to get 108
Hi Diane. As long as it is done in multiples of three, it conforms to the sacred geometry.
The reason for 21 beads is because that typically measures the number of breaths in a two minute period, for counting purposes.
Stodoys has a very large project base.
My beads are more than 15 inches and it's 18 beads. I also don't have a Guru bead, but I do have the head of the Buddha, so is this really a mala prayer bead?
Heather Cook - some Malas will have other multiples of three. These can still be used in the same way if your number of breaths is close to the number of beads on your mala. The Buddha head would be considered the guru bead.
When you are counting, are you counting breathes in and breathes out separately? Or are you counting one breath in with one breathe out as one bead?
Yandere Jon, a full round or breath is in and out.
This breath explanation is wrong, it's just used for reciting mantras, nothing to do with breaths
