Ted Nugent is in this band, before he started his solo carrier. I'm not sure if you've checked out Ted yet, but he has a lot of good toons (Stranglehold, Cat Scratch Fever)
Yep, this is a great track, no mind altering substances required. That classic, raw sound of the late 1960's where the reverb and sound of the studio all played part in the atmosphere and vibe of the recording itself. Great song.
He got into some serious trouble for doing that. The FBI and Secret Service take those threats seriously. And I am sure Ted had to find that out the hard way.
Good Ole Uncle Ted Nudgent. This was a song for many a long car rides to nowhere. just to go. Gas was 28 cents a gallon and 5 bucks filled a 16 gallon tank.
One of my faves from this time period, first heard by me at age six, and it still blows my mind. Now, five and a half decades later, under very different demographic conditions, super entertaining to see and hear this young man grooving to it and then nailing all the reasons for its greatness in his well delivered review. Nice to see there’s still some artistic intellectuals out there capable of appreciating quality in whatever way it presents itself. Looks like someone DID take the time to journey to the center of the mind!
Thank you for playing Amboy Dukes and Ted Nugent and introducing many listeners to this outstanding example of 60s rock. Y'all got to remember there was never anything like this heard before. Groundbreaking. PEACE!
The sound was also a result of the technology of the equipment used to record. This was late 60's. They didn't have all the bells and whistles we have today. They often laid a live recording with an 8-track tape, moved stuff they liked from those 8-tracks onto 2 or 4 tracks, then overdubbed more onto the freed up tracks. So, you couldn't split the panning much of instruments at that time. But, they were mostly playing, usually, live as a band in the recording studio. Same with Moody Blues stuff. Also, these bands back then were they types of bands you'd find in road houses and bars, playing their butts off on a small state while you sipped your beer. The drummer in this band is also phenomenal, Joe Vitale, who went on to be with Joe Walsh , Eagles, Frampton, CSN, etc. (known for his big kettle drums in his kit)
It's the raw sound of this I really like, garage-band like. This was really their only hit. But Ted Nugent was the guitarist and the band went on to be his backup after he retired the name.
Sorry but gotta react Again!! I had their first album released in 1967,and They did a remake of a Classic Song called "Baby Please Don't Go "!! That album got Stolen from me But their version was Spectacular!! Please React to That One!!
1968 Ted Nugent taming an over driven Gibson Byrdland jazz guitar. So much experimentation in making music back in the day, we now take for granted... Great track!
I saw the Amboy Dukes at a rock festival in Miami in about 1968 or 9. Ted Nugent was a long haired kid who played his lead from the top of the grand piano. I found out later the "Amboy Dukes" was the name of a gang of 1950s delinquents in a fiction paperback book.
This is why I like this channel. He's not afraid to explore the deep cuts or obscure stuff. Keep it up bro. Enlighten your audience that are only familiar with what they heard played on the radio ona regular basis. This was very early in Ted Nugent's career before he released his 1st solo album in 74. I think you reacted to Stranglehold. Here's some more songs from familiar artists that you've reacted to. I know you love keyboard so you should love most of these. Grand Funk- The Railroad " - Good and Evil " - Flight of the Phoenix " - Gettin Over You " - Loneliness Uriah Heep - Pilgrim " - Beautiful Dream " - Return to Fantasy " - A year or a day " - Seven Stars " - Dreams " - I'm Alive You've got your work cut out for you 😆
Thanks for continuing to branch out and be willing to get blindsided! I enjoyed the song and your reaction, though I am not aware of any other songs by this group. "Time Has Come Today" by The Chambers Brothers is one you would enjoy, along with "Mmm Mmm" by Crash Test Dummies, "And When I Die" by Blood Sweat and Tears and "Fly At Night" by Chilliwack! Add them to the bottom of your list, Chod, but definitely add them!
Chod, another Detroit mainstay was Mitch Ryder & Detroit. Lots of tunes, but you will love Rock & Roll Music studio version. Long version ( about 20 seconds longer ) with a kazoo intro is best. Turn it up, lol. It’s the story of discovering r & r music on the radio !
Keep in mind, when this song came out, America has just Started shipping boys off to Nam. The Sixties started the Flower Child and Hippy movements, and no, they weren't the same. This was kind of a message to those pulling Governmental Strings in the 60s and going to War, and telling them to think a bit deeper about what they are thinking.
Whaaat?? Ted Nugent was the lead guitarist and composer?? This is one of the reasons I follow you, Chod. I learn something new about my favorite musicians every day.
1968 when this song came out I was into drugs very deeply ! ( I never did Heroin lost too many friends to that ) !! Acid was the best !! there were so many kinds mine was 4 way Blue Cheer you would only take 1 quarter of it ! I was hitchhiking at the time and some dude said take it all !! by the time I got to my destination I was a Mess! Bad Trip ! it was the last trip I would take !! the late 60's Wow !! what a Strange Trip is Has Been !! this song was It!!
the Nuge, Ted Nugent 18 when this monster was recorded and released when Ted was 19.. Amboy Dukes tearing up the Motor City along with Alice Cooper, Stooges, Bob Seger, GFR, Motown, MC5 and the most unknown group DEATH, (Hackney Brothers, 4th Movement)..
This song was not easy for the drummer to match up to the singers timing. And they're all singing loud as marching soldiers where your voices could crack Who knows how many takes this recording took to sound just right. It's a masterpiece for how short it is
The album Tooth, Fang, and Claw by the Amboy Dukes really Rocks.. check out "The Great White Buffalo" or an even more obscure jam.. "No Holds Barred". Both are from 1974..
Saw Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes with Deep Purple on their Machinehead tour. We were expecting Blues Image but they cancelled. And when Ted was up there blowing us away, we were like " Who is this!?" Loved it. Was hooked ever since. And this is early Ted Nugent. Saw him years later at a bar/night club. Ears were ringing the whole next day.
Thanks for the work and passion you put into your channel. I do enjoy the journey. So, you like Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart,Ron Wood then please listen to Beck's first album,Truth. This song has great keyboards from the legendary Nicky Hopkins also.. The song..."You shook me". You will not be disappointed with any song on this album. It set the template for Led Zeppelin's first album. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones can be found playing on this album. Thanks
Oh the Old Shure Mics were TOP Dollar. the SM57 today, sounds ALMOST as good as the Original from the late 1950s. They had some Great Mics. Digital doesn't hold a stick to Analog.
I hear Moody Blues type harmonizing. If you like harmonizing Crosby, Stills and Nash need to be at the top of the list. Suite Judy Blue Eyes is a good intro song. They will be added to the list of bands on your phone after you hear it.
You made a good point around the early 60s. rocknroll was just simple self contained natural feeling. It was perfect and satisfying just by itself. You could appreciate a 2 -3 min track and move to the next good track. Almost like motion pictures from the 40s and 50s that feel and naturalness was completely satisfying and self contained. It could be termed dated yes but it still resonants to me not like these overprocessed CGI crap storylines like today.
They opened for Wishbone Ash in 74ish, followed by Camel then WA. This is the only band I ever saw get audibly booed. The rest of the concert was great, but the Amboy Dukes were so bad. However, I’ve always loved this song.
Wow, you’ve really been getting into some fairly obscure territory to me, I’ve heard this song but not of the band. Probably a one album project? That’s excellent but please don’t leave the biggies behind. There’s so much more to explore.
insane bass line throughout the entire song.
Bass player kills it.
I was in 8th grade when this came out I'm 66 now and I still get buzzed on this song
Yes!!
Glad to hear someone younger discover these guys. The recording and performances really stand up. Bottom line, these guys could play!
Ted Nugent is in this band, before he started his solo carrier. I'm not sure if you've checked out Ted yet, but he has a lot of good toons (Stranglehold, Cat Scratch Fever)
Ted was 15 when this was recorded..
Stranglehold!!
@@jimmyphillips480 wow! Brilliant!

Yup
Ted is a sick guitarist for sure! The only rock star ever to be visited by the secret service after making public threats towards OBAMA.
He got into some serious trouble for doing that. The FBI and Secret Service take those threats seriously. And I am sure Ted had to find that out the hard way.
Well deserved, too...worst pres EVER
Since your in this era react to the Vanilla Fudge You Keep Me Hanging On. Deep Purple and some other bands were influenced by this band.
Good Ole Uncle Ted Nudgent. This was a song for many a long car rides to nowhere. just to go. Gas was 28 cents a gallon and 5 bucks filled a 16 gallon tank.
The Yardbirds "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" (1966)
I hadn't heard this in like, forever... brings back memories. I was a 20 year old college student. Cool to see you exploring something different.
I live in the center of my mind. The hard thing is having to take an occasional journey to reality.
One of my faves from this time period, first heard by me at age six, and it still blows my mind. The Motor City mad man!
Maybe their only hit, but had other songs that were better. Pony express is one of em
@@scottlaughlin9897 And that's true of so many bands. Some of their best music never made it to the radio.
For most folks, this was their first exposure to Ted The Sledge, all the way from Detroit City.
this style is Psychedelic Rock which crosses over with Garage Rock from the same period
Early acid rockadelic. This came out when the Moody Blues released "Ride My Seesaw". This really tweeked my rock bones.
They were pioneers....those bands, recording engineers...the entire scene.

Ted invented Amboy Dukes and wrote this song at 17. He is a Michigan man like me. Ted is a hero in my world! Semper Fi Motor City Mad Man

Ted. Amboy Dukes. Right on.
