My favorite Tea For Two on youtube (after Tatum himself). It feels the most Tatum-like because Matt hasn't just memorized the transcription, he's created his own arrangement using Tatum's vocabulary and it's just amazing. The hard swing, the smooth and energetic runs, the flourishes. Love love love it.
My God, what a gifted young gentleman! I truly wish him the very best in what I hope will be a brilliant career. He has grasped the essentials of Tatum's language ; it's not just hacked out. Bravissimo.
Yuja Wang is a great pianist but her Tea for Two does not sound like Tatum's. Meanwhile this one sounds like how a young Art Tatum himself might have sounded.
This is just about the closest to Tatum have heard in a LONG while. Outstanding! Great left hand. You obviously have s great understanding of Tatum’s phrasing, techniques and ‘tricks’. Great job. MORE please!!
Impressive what this young man can do on this small piano, imagine him on a fast and responsive modern piano action of say a Yamaha Grand or Steinway? What he does an excellent job here technically speaking, is he does not play with the typical finger legato, but rather uses techniques shared by the masters themselves which is detached note playing so that your fingers are free to move around the country, the keyboard meaning! Both Oscar Petterson and Art Tatum had a precise control over the duration of the notes they played and how long they held them down with their fingers. Master this technically and you have limitless technique and headroom to play whatever you want to both classically or in any style of music such as this jazz style.
Ya, great playing. It's such a chill tune that it's easy for the unaware to dismiss this as routine piano music. But, that's really high-level playing. Art Tatum was in a league of his own, and just a master improviser.
It took me 200 hearings to understand Art Tatum. Then it took me 400 tries to emulate him. I still have not gotten 1/2 of what Matt has under his fingers.
Very impressive. Brings a memory - my father played an EP record with this one - perhaps more than 60 years ago. It is not until now that I understand how complex Tea for Two really is. Well played! What is Matt's last name?
Who wold thumbs down this??? wow ..great job doing man...amazing. now get writing your own songs!! Don;t be like art Tatum and never write your own thing (I can't believe I said dont be like Art Tatum)
So..this is Matt who.? ..this guy is amazing...great and getting so close to Tatum👍👍. If you would end up in a bar and find this talent like this it is like you hit the jackpot.
Did he actually transcribe it or learned from available sheet music? I know he added his own set of improvisation in Tatum style but a lot of it is note for note Tatum - hence the question. Regardless, incredibly impressive.
Rachmaninoff was an excellent pianist, let’s not forget that. It was Horowitz who said if Tatum ever takes up Classical they’re finished. But let’s not get carried away, these two were some of the finest pianists we’ve ever seen, and whether Tatum could have handled Rach’s 3rd piano concerto is debatable. Think they were being respectful as opposed to honest.
There's no such thing as THE BEST of course, though I think Tatum was a better pianist than either Morton or Joplin - more refined technique more complex rhythm and harmonies. We can only guess how Liszt or Alkan played, but I think just pianistically speaking there were a number of classical pianists who could easily rival or surpass Tatum. (Rachmaninoff, Lhevinne, Godowsky, Hoffman, Barere are just a few examples of superb pianism) Yes, he may not have been the best but he was unique.
You obviously have not read any comments from Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Toscanini and many other great classical musicians about Art Tatum. By comparing Joplin to Art Tatum you are either a very shallow musician or jealous of Tatum and trying to candidly divert people's opinions of him with your untrue words! Fortunately most true musicians (including you perhaps!) know the truth!
Are you like me, who has a bias on Tatum but still hopes to have other people confirm the bias by pretending not to agree on the majority vote? Anyway, consider this - which jazz pianist would you consider to have more "pianism" - Tatum or Peterson? In my opinion Art Tatum is kind of like the master, Michelangeli. He's up there, definitely one of the best, but to really appreciate his pianism you have to read behind the lines (pun intended). He did not employ Cziffra's "virtuoso" sound, or Horowitz's "thunderous" quality. But when you start seeing Yuja Wang supposedly one of today's most technical pianists struggle with this piece, and then listen to the original version, you start really appreciating the mastery of Tatum. I personally think he's one of the very greatest pianists, even when compared with Horowitz or Michelangeli. Only a musician above and beyond "virtuoso" level could achieve this sound quality, in my opinion.
I think tatum is one of the greatest pianists of the world but not the best (think of Liszt or Alkan,Jelly Roll Morton or Scott Joplin). Although there's no one like him, speaking in terms of improvisation and arrangement (maybe Liszt with his tons of trasncriptions would compete in arrangement).
He's most certainly one of the best of all time. Very few pianists, even classical, could match him. Only the likes of Arrau, Horowitz, Rubinstein, or Rachmaninoff could.
Scott Joplin better than Art Tatum? That is absolutely laughable. The hardest of Scott Joplin's piano pieces are a breeze for anyone with even the makings of a half decent technique. There is no evidence that Scott Joplin was considered to be an exceptional pianist amongst his contemporaries, let alone one of the greatest of all virtuosi. Jelly Roll Morten was a great player but he is universes behind Tatum; it isn't even close.
I like how almost nobody seem to understand how talented this guy is....

This performance is HIGHLY underrated. I think honestly it’s my favorite performance of it, besides Art’s.
An unusual talent! He has the "Tatum feel".

That young lady sure appreciated his playing!
That's a prodigy if I've ever seen one.
Wow! This is by far the best amateur video and attempt of Art's Tea for Two. I like the improv too
yeah I prefer your rendition to Yuja Wang's, it seems more Tatum-like honestly
Yuja Wang is a great pianist but her Tea for Two does not sound like Tatum's. Meanwhile this one sounds like how a young Art Tatum himself might have sounded.
This guy is not an amateur.
What do you mean amateur - this takes a lot of skill and practice.
The video is amateur, i.e. not professional. Not referring to the player
One of the few to really capture Tatum's nuance. Brilliant.
This is just about the closest to Tatum have heard in a LONG while. Outstanding! Great left hand. You obviously have s great understanding of Tatum’s phrasing, techniques and ‘tricks’. Great job. MORE please!!
The mastery and harmonic understanding of Art Tatum's devices is astounding. Bravo!

first time i see someone playin it that way... amazing !
This kid is fantastic. He is improvising in the Art Tatum style. He is evidently well-versed in that tradition.
Doing Art proud absolutely amazing
Terrific great arrangement!!

Lovely tribute! Nobody can play like Tatum, but it's nice to see young people trying.
Thanks for sharing!
I'm sure the young lady was ready to go home with the young man after his brilliant tea for two rendition 😊😂🤝🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Very good Matt, you are a very talented pianist.
Absolutely terrific!
Mind blowing!
Now i saw the date of publishing. I hope he's still playing the piano.

This is probably the closest we'll get to Art for a very long time
Matt really knows how to play!

Damn...he needs to go big if he hasnt done so already. Because if he play shit like ole tatum, he can play just about whatever he gets ready to.
I hope that I'll play Tea for Two piano solo for the most beutiful girls in some days.
Art Tatum no lo habría hecho mejor.

Simply spectacular piano playing, I think Tatum would be impressed and a little uncomfortable playing after this

Only pianists I know of that hold a candle to Tatum are Liszt, Rach, and Chopin
Let’s just enjoy the music ;) everyone has their preferences so there’s no right or wrong

it's just a cover. he didn't make the song
