    There are discussions and full-blown arguments among BS&R collectors when oddities show up like that grooved handle chicken fryer. No one is able to determine what happened when those pieces were made - much like the mysterious "Mercedes" or "Peace sign" skillets or your own "almost BS&R #14" skillet with the extended size number. There's even a theory that there was another foundry somewhere -- as you say, the Krane foundry -- that used BS&R molds and made pieces that were almost exactly the same as BS&R, except for little differences like that. I don't believe this theory myself, though I can't prove it wrong. I'm more inclined to think those grooved handle pieces happened from some time to time when a worker had a mishap of some kind on the production line, maybe either casting a mold or pattern, or some piece of machinery was out of alignment or set up wrong. But again, I can't prove it. And of course, in those days these weren't considered to be valuable pieces. They were cheap, quickly made frying pans, so little differences like this may not have been worth filing patent infringement lawsuits or the like.

    Just confirmed that they did make groved handles.

    Whatever they are, they are nice pieces. Popularity & rarity is when they turn into collectors items probably. I don't know. We tend to crave what we don't have. Luv it.

    Hey Stephen I have a question for you. I have a lodge chicken fryer that I want to strip so I can season it myself and I'm going to use the easy off method that you posted. The cast iron has a little bit of rust so my question is do I remove the rust first or do I just put it straight into the bag with the easy off?

    • @patrickcasper7487
      @patrickcasper7487 2 роки тому +1

      Strip it first with the easy off is my recommendation. Typically my first step is always the lye bath because it removes everything except the rust so you know what you're working with a bit better. Then you can either do the 50/50 vinegar dilution wash or electrolysis for rust removal.

    Can you tell me the make of this pan? It is lighter than others.
    It has an 8, a dot and a C on the bottom above a teardrop handle. The ring is full on the outside edge of the pan. Also, it has a straight line across the bottom...

      Those are called drip basters. They allow the condensation to fall back onto the food evenly.

    Hello sir,,
    I have a question ❓
    Why does a dutch oven and a chicken fryer look identical..????
    I don't know the difference..
    I have what my dad called his dutch oven.. it is a deep pan with a lid that has rings on the inside of lid.,,
    And when you show a flyer,, they look the same..
    Can you do a video explaining and showing what makes them different..
    Thankyou, your fan.

      The big difference between a Dutch oven and a chicken fire is the Dutch oven has a wire bail handle and the chicken fryer has a handle the same as a skillet. The chicken fryer is a little bit deeper than a skillet but not quite as deep as it Dutch open. Somewhere in between.

    I have a collection of skillets, I lead test all of them, I recently found a #14 red mountain at the flea market and it looks good but when I got home it tested positive. This was my first positive. Is there anything I can do? Thank you for any info you can give me.

    • @fisherman2359
      @fisherman2359 2 роки тому

      I’d test again. A #14 used to melt lead seems unlikely. Those tests do give false positive time to time

    • @castironkev
      @castironkev 2 роки тому

      Try the 3m test, cheaper ones will throw false more often!

      The number 7 is the size and the G4 is the mold number.
