My father follows the Torah in every aspect of his life; if the Jewish faith commands it, he believes it. When I brought up what was happening in Palestine, he said something that really stuck with me:
"I don't care whose land it was thousands of years ago, I care that thousands of children are dying."
He doesn't speak English, so this is a loose translation, but it's message still stands. If you have a heart, you will denounce the Israeli government's actions.

I learnt of the palestinian genocide through a jewish man handing flyers for an association of jewish people fighting to stop the genocide, back in 2018. They were trying to educate college students on an issue we don't talk much about here and I'll forever be grateful to this man for giving me that flyer and allowing me to learn about what was going on. I don't personally know that many jewish people, but I've seen and heard so many being vocally against the genocide and israel that I refuse to believe they aren't more numerous that the zionists, and that's a thing we need to scream of the top of our lungs until it can no longer be ignored

The Israeli's don't oppress Palestinian's purely on their faith, in fact they even oppress native Palestinian's who are Jewish, it's on the basis that they are Palestinian that they are oppressed. Bajoran's also were not nomadic and were occupied rather than stateless, they were still Bajoran citizens not Cardassian citizens. Get over yourselves. Tara is still the same person she's always been, and she's still one of the good ones. You really thought someone publicly identified as a Jew wasn't going to support Israel? Yes, I know there's a difference between supporting Israel's right to exist and supporting the Netanyahu government, but you don't give any consideration as to what Tara actually believes. She could easily not know the difference, and so she'd be merely misinformed. That never happened to enter your mind? There's also the fact that a lot of you don't merely support the Palestinian people and a two-state solution, but some of you actively whitewash Hamas as not a terrorist organization, and even seem to suggest "Well, Israel brought it on themselves, they're the BIGGER terrorists."
In short, not all of you are as morally upright as you think. Some of you shill for terrorists or go to claim Israel has no reason to exist at all. I know, the fact that Europeans were so upset about the Holocaust and said "You should have a sanctuary, but we don't actually want you HERE" is infuriating and it would've saved a lot of strife if they'd had a place in Germany, for example. But what happened happened, and stop pretending it didn't. And remember, the two-state solution had its greatest chances at Camp David and then Taba, but between Arafat's intransigence, Barak trying to welsh on certain interim steps, and the actions of Ariel Sharon and Bibi to basically kill the process, we're where we are today.
But in short, Tara hasn't change. She's the same beacon of positivity she's always been. Same way Ellen has always been the force for good she's always been, there's nothing two-faced about her. But the Internet can't appreciate nuance, isn't interested in truth. And you are taking progressivism to a place of purity culture, and eating our own, dragging our best allies down into the gutter. I'm not a right-wing figure by any means, and I'll certainly never abandon liberalism, but the fact that the movement has been hijacked by firebrands and led by modern day Robespierres is frightening to me.

You are right, of course, that conflating 'Israel' and 'Jewish people' is a common anti-Semitic tactic. However, it's also something that the Israeli constitution does, as does the right-wing of Israeli politics (including Netanyahu and Likud). All Jewish people worldwide are considered to be Israelis, or potential Israelis, and non-Jewish people in Israel are not fully seen as Israeli (Arab Israelis, for example, are treated as second-class citizens). Ironically, as currently constituted and governed, Israel itself _promotes_ the anti-Semitic idea that 'Jews are Israel and Israel is Jews'.

Very few people learn much about other examples of genocide, and they think "well, they're not literally being rounded up into death camps and being explicitly called an inferior race that needs to be exterminated, so it can't be genocide!". It's even more complicated by the face that Israel's formation was in part motivated by a desire to protect Jewish people from future genocide, so the Israeli government has made this a focus of their propaganda to make them seem like the victims instead of the aggressors.

She's often said that Jewish people serve the same God and will go to the same heaven. (and I think that has to do with her history with fascist occupation of Greece, since she was born right before it happened and really hates the Nazis) There aren't a huge population of Jewish Greeks but she is friends with quite a few. So, I asked her what she and her friends thought of what was going on in Palestine, and she told me about how one of her friends had cried and cried when he discovered what was going on, and how it changed her entire perspective on what Israel was doing. She said it in Greek, but roughly translated, she said that if Israel truly stood for Jewish people, then why would its actions make one cry? and that's a really poetic, beautiful way to put it.

My Jewish family and friends sit around and talk about it and the emotions in the room are so difficult. It's difficult to let myself feel what I feel when I see the horrors that are being committed "in my name"... because what does my grief achieve? How do my tears help the people who are being massacred and starved? How dare I feel the release of tears when I'm sitting safe in my home and whatever actions I can take in support of the Palestinian people feel so small and trivial?
Another feeling I'm struggling with is shame. I hate how this conflict is poisoning the way I feel about my own people. I've been so hurt and disappointed and enraged seeing what some people in my own community are willing to stand by... considering our history, the depth of betrayal that comes with seeing that some of the decedents of our ancestors are willing to commit atrocities with such terrible parallels... it hurts so much.
I also know that so many people in my community are vehemently against what is happening, and are standing up for justice. I'm surrounded by those people, and they help me feel less ashamed. But I just wish there was more I could do. I have hardly any money, not much free time, my health is bad, I have a very limited social network, my local government representatives have no interest in what I think... I do what small things I can to help but it feels like nothing... feeling powerless and knowing that these things are continuing to happen every day... my tears fall, but my tears won't stop bombs or put food in children's hands.

Every Palestinian I follow on Twitter or UA-cam or whatever who has spoken out about the subject has used their platform to plead empathy for the people in Gaza, and I have not heard one word from them broadly demonizing Israelis, let alone Jews globally. The only hatred I have seen is the regular ethnic cleansing language used by the Israeli government. Little aside, that I feel like applies here. In the original Marvel Secret Wars from like 1984 I believe, there's an interaction between Captain America and Wolverine where many of the heroes, particularly the avengers, are questioning why magneto was on the side with the heroes, to which he points out everything he's ever done has been in defense of mutant kind who was constantly facing discrimination & oppression.
There's a point where Wolverine calls out Captain America for not really fighting for all people, or even all americans, because, up to this point up to this point, he's never taken up a fight alongside mutantkind. Captain America responds to that by saying "that's still no excuse for terrorism", to which Wolverine replies "Terrorist? That's just what the big armies call the little ones."
That little scene is always stuck with me because it's kind of true. It's like when America tries to justify their occupation of the Middle East for several decades with 9/11. You caused many of the problems there for decades, and you're mad when they decide to try and get their lick back? Obviously that does not justify the deaths of innocents, but why did you only suddenly care about the deaths of Innocents when it was on your side? Where was this concern for the people that were already living there that you stole resources from?

I am ticked about this whole discussion for many reasons. As horrible as what is happening in Gaza is, there are far worse things happening all over the world right now that don't happen to be on TikTok. Everyone is screaming about Gaza, but more than 45 armed conflicts are currently taking place throughout the Middle East and North Africa in the following territories: Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Yemen and Western Sahara. Syria is the most affected country in the region. Several multiple and overlapping conflicts are taking place in the country - involving numerous armed groups who fight against the government and against each other -, along with two military occupations and three international armed conflicts
Africa comes second in the number of armed conflicts per region with more than 35 non-international armed conflicts (NIACs) taking place in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. Several armed groups - fighting against government forces and/or against each other’s - are involved in these conflicts.
Asia is the theatre of 19 non-international armed conflicts (NIACs) involving 19 armed groups. These are happening in Afghanistan, India, Myanmar, Pakistan and The Philippines.
Two international armed conflicts - between respectively India and Pakistan, and between India and China - are also taking place in the region.
But, because none of these are on TikTok getting live streamed, no one in America gives a damn.
Russia is STILL waging war against Ukraine as well! Why is no one still outraged about that?
Because China is an ally of Russia, China owns TikTok, and China wants you all focused on Israel and ignoring what Russia and China are doing right now.
Yes, absolutely protest Israel's actions in Gaza and rightly so. BUT, also don't take your eyes off of the real powers in the world and what they are up to. They are using your distraction to take over places without you noticing.

From what I heard, Israel's military does not care if they bomb schools, hospitals or even refugee camps. These are not the actions of someone defending themselves from a threat or trying to find the hostages and get them back alive.
I'm all for countries who get invaded and attacked, that they should be able to defend themselves against an aggressor to keep it's own people save. But killing innocents in masses is no self defense!
And I don't understand how this is a controverse standpoint to take.

I refer you to Miko Peled and Breaking the Silence for how Israelis actually feel who are not allied with Netanyahu.
As for Star Trek it always surprises me when creatives don't hold the same positions as their scripts or characters do. Perhaps it is time to remember that these are actors who play many roles that they may not personally agree with.
It is upsetting to find that people you admire don't hold the values you thought they did but hold to the Star Trek values yourself.

I recently resigned in protest from a Star Trek roleplaying group and fan club based in the Second Life metaverse because of the culture of bullying, bigotry, favoritism and other forms of prejudice that I have seen developed over the nearly 15 years of me being a member there.
It was a painful decision, made so by the fact that group leaders subjected one of their own to what could be amounted to a lenient penalty compared to how they have treated others for the same, all the way down to even alleged less infractions. My friends that are of and supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community no longer felt safe in that group. But seeing that group leaders did not take into account the wellbeing of other members, it made my decision to leave very easy.
It’s tragic that despite Star Trek going strong for nearly six decades, there are still those who miss the point of it all.

Well, I feel like a moron now. But it's been a growing process with me. I unironically thought Israel was trying to fight Hamas and that Hamas was using innocent people as shields. I thought there was this huge anti-Semitic problem where people were trying to justify Hamas and what they did, what they have been doing for years. I was disgusted and appalled, but nobody has explained the conflict to me like this before. I appreciate you opening my eyes and I hope one day I can be forgiven for my misunderstanding.

I completely get it. I live in America, and in high school, I was taught that Isreal was the benevolent side of the conflict and that Palestine was irrational and refused peace. I'm not exaggerating. It was part of the curriculum, and not just some random teacher pushing their views. It's not common sense, and these people are actively being suppressed and of course, the oppressor narrative is what permeates.

      1. His content is quite honestly, boring.
      2. He has the insane paranoia that UA-cam is plotting against him, and keeps making dumb videos how UA-cam is out to get him, making ridiculous conspiracies about it.
      3. He allows himself to be sponsored by dubious products/companies. I understand that he has bills to pay, but there is a red line...

I'm Israeli, and a leftist. I'm areligious now, but I was raised fundamentalist Orthodox Jewish, in a community that is fervently Zionist. To this day I am still finding loose threads and lies to unlearn as I try to become a more compassionate person. I actually had to wait a few days before watching this video because I just... only have so much energy to stomach even more tough ideas when I'm literally surrounded by propaganda 24/7 and have been for six months. It's exhausting to fight back, constantly, to try and outmaneuver my own government. x . the genocide is inexcusable; no genocide is ever excusable. It's characters like Kira Nerys and Ambassador G'kar who have helped me open my heart to those who are 'other'. And really, Israelis and Palestinians are not so different. x. In theory, "existence is resistance", the fact that I refuse to bow down or to curl up and die as a trans, leftist Israeli is already something, but I feel so much guilt for not doing more.

    • @GregOrCreg
      @GregOrCreg 3 місяці тому

I am sorry for the difficult cognitive process you're going through right now. I think it's hitting Israel right now, because Israel is a relatively new country (only 76 years old), whereas other Western colonialist nations, like the US, like Australia, like most of Western Europe, have been oppressing and condemning other nations across the world, for decades and even centuries. Israel is not alone here. Many other nations have a litany of sins against their name. Germany, for instance, has quite rightly had to grapple with their forefathers' role in the Holocaust and murder of 6 million Jews, so, please do not feel that it is only Israel that has blood on its hands. Jews have been historically sinned against far more than they've sinned towards others. Alas, however, it is Israel, a Jewish nation state, that is perpetrating acts of mass murder right now, which is emphatically NOT to condemn the Jewish diaspara or even all Israeli Jews.
