A tip for a power outage to save a freezer of food from spoiling. Pile old blankets, rugs, or other padding on top of your freezer early in the outage. I saved most of my freezer in a 12 day outage a few years ago. It was fall and cool in the house but many people lost their entire freezer.
I went through a 3 day power outtage back in the early 2000s when I rented an apt in a very rural area. I luckily had cash on me and so got some bottled water from the local gas station/grocery as well as 2 large blocks of ice. I repacked my deep freezer right away and put wool blankets around it. I also moved the fridge freezer stuff into the big freezer, too. I moved the fridge stuff into the fridge freezer and wrapped that up too. I only lost 2 pkgs of chicken that prob would have been ok but I wasn't chancing it. If I had packed that better, I'd have been fine. I also filled up my cooler with river water (this was late June I think) and I was able to wash up and flush the toilet.
I buy candy for emergencies. M&M’s w/peanuts or twizzlers some midget candy bars. It helps with stressful situations. I brought a few to a friend in their wellness goodies who was sick with the virus. It was the first thing out of the goody bag they said they ate. Just brightened their mood to have a snicker, a kit-Kat & a peppermint patty. He’s 70. We adults need a little bit of sweet to get through rough times. Candy is not just for kids. 😁
@Ashley’s Craft Corner herbal cough drops are great too. And you can find them in the candy section of dollar tree. Also chocolate will irritate most illnesses. Chicken noodles would be better. And a case of clear lemon lime soda.
Having parents who were missionaries was a great way to grow up....we never had much money but always enough to eat. I'm very thankful that I was raised to eat just about anything and have never been a picky eater. It's a great benefit considering these crazy times in which we live ‼️
I grew up to eat whatever was put in frount of me and to clean my plate. ALSO WE ATE LEFTOVER. So many just throw out everything. Also had a huge garden.
I agree with the idea of having some snacks or desserts on hand especially if you have kids or are a kid at heart. Emergencies are stressful and scary and having something you like on hand will be nice. Is it needed for survival? No. Will you enjoy it and bring a little bit of calm or normalcy? Yes.
My late husband was Diabetic they said in an emergency to use coffee creamer for cereal. I don't know if it will taste good, but at least you'd have something to eat.
Canned tuna and stir in some Thousand Island dressing. Put on bread or eat right out of the can. No cooking or refrigeration required and very filling.
chocolate pudding, when you can't eat a chocolate bar is a great comfort food. I found powdered pudding mix, bought it and stored it. we ate it past due date no problem.
One thing you did not include was Hot Dogs. If you have them in the freezer or refrigerator, they can be eaten right out of the package. The the way I like to eat them is right out of the package with yellow mustard.
I so love that you and your Mom are so close. Mine was my bf. She was my canning buddy and mentor. She has been fine for 5 years and I miss her every single day. Enjoy each day together!
We knew what you meant..my kids and I talk about everyday and she knew so many of these things talked about here. Just yesterday one daughter said..i just felt Nannie saying make chocolate chip cookies and she did and we all got to enjoy. All of you here are part of a lovely tradition and I thank you!
Cooking rice w/no power idea: Bring rice and water to boil on rocket stove, (or any alternate heat source) boil and stir for about 1 - 1 1/2 minutes. Put lid on and set near heat source to stay warm but not cook. Rice will fluff up on its own in about 20-30 min. I learned this trick on my electric stove top after burning many batches of rice trying to simmer after boiling, and it works great. I feel the concept would surely work with any heat source that boils water.
If it's cold but sunny put your canned food on the dash in the morning by later in the day they will be nice and warm. Also put glass jars of water in there. Nice free water heating.
Jello cups are great for both emergency and for a sick loved one. It's a great way to get fluids down a sore throat, and keeps people from being dehydrated.
In using body heat to warm up canned. Stick everything for the next day into your sleeping bag . OVERNIGHT. It will be several degrees warmer the next day. Also any FRESH ROOT CROPS ,potatoes, carrots onions ect should be in the bed covers if the room temp drops to freezing overnight where you are. If they freeze they spoil. All they need is insulation ( blankets, ) and body heat. Pipes like under the sink are often kept from freezing by cleaning it out and putting a candle or kerosene lamp turned low under the sink. Leave the doors open. And flame not near any wood or fabric. Or other things. Frozen pipes might mean evacuation.
I remember going on vacations when I was a kid, before there were a lot of fast food joints. And we would stop at rest areas and eat food out of cans, like spaghetti o's and meatballs, cold and potted meat sandwiches. Dad was trying to get to as many places as he could. So, we learned to hurry up and eat, then he hit the road again.
Oh, my goodness, I well remember potted meat sandwiches. I took potted meat sandwiches in a bagged lunch to school starting in 8th grade through high school. That was only thing my parents could afford for school lunches and if I had .45 cents would of bought a hot school lunch this was in 1960s.
We never did that when I was growing up (because my mom and I never did road trips), but my husband and I almost always eat at rest areas on our road trips. Some of our favorite go-to meals are canned fish on crackers with raw veggies on the side (baby carrots, mini-cucumbers, celery sticks, etc.).
Depending on the reason for the power outage and time of year and where you live. You may be able to store your foods outside or warm food outside. Don't forget to put some type of food in your car.
Dry food ,and instant like mashed potatoes. Plus water and a boyscout set . Also sand for tires and blankets or a snowsuit for everyone. Also a change of meds in a 6 pack cooler. Keep enough for a week in the car. At all times. Change out monthly. You never know where you will be when you are kept from getting home. ( evacuation from you neighborhood because of a overturned rig with dangerous chemicals can happen ANYWHERE. And it can take days to get home or the office) and months to get it cleaned up and replace stuff. ( fires is another reason especially if caused by broken gas line )
I had to heat a baby bottle in the car by putting it under my arm w/ 2 layers of clothing, was not long before it was body temp. Enough for the baby to drink😊

I bought powdered milk for my grandson and it stays good a couple years past the best by date. I grew up where we didnt look at dates we just ate the food unless it was bad.
You can stir in either Pesto, Curry Paste, or Chutney into a tin of Chicken in White sauce, (I think you call it Chicken a la King in USA,) it can then be eaten cold, or top a Salad with it. 👍 TFS these tips, & take care too everybody. ❤🙂🐶
I bought a rocket stove to use in case of a power outage. It is a portable one, bucket stove. It can be used with a variety of fuels including Sterno in case there’s a burn ban to use it outdoors. It can heat up water to cook something simple.
When I ate raw potatoes and raw green peppers around 1985, I later became allergic to them and the other nightshade relatives tomato, eggplant and tobacco. They CRIPPLED me. And when I eliminated those nightshades from my diet, I became able to walk again. Doctors misdiagnosed me as arthritis, but changing my diet cured me plus I also got tumeric black pepper capsules from health food store which got me walking within the week. What make for my grandkids that they love is peanut butter balls. They are made with peanut butter, dried milk powder and honey. I tell them go wash your hands and then they can make their own balls like playing with Play Do.
You notice Jill mentioned CHOCOLATE milk, HOT CHOCOLATE and CHOCOLATE pudding LOL Chocolate covered nuts and chocolate covered raisins are yummy, too :)
I was so tickled when I heard you eat raw potatoes! My husband thinks it’s strange and gross that I like it. I grew up eating a chunk or two when we would peel them for fried potatoes.
I can remember when I was a kid in a hotel cooking pizza rolls on the heat register. lol car engine ,sun, above buddy heater in power out , candles. Im loving you first cook book.
Olives, anything with alot of salt n it lasts longer too, I have cookies in mylar packs, they ar Mexican cookies n they are so good, n a good morale booster, I have had them last about 2 years on the shelf n they were not stale.
Often times when I buy chicken, or Turkey or even a roast portion it out and cook it all at one time then put in ziplock s and put in freezer. When you can't cook these meats ,then they are already done just thaw it and eat immediately.. I do this even now because in this apartment you don't know if the power may go out and the backup generator might not come back on so it won't go bad so quick
My son used to come home every day after school and eat a pack of ramen noodles for a snack. Crunch them up with no water and eat them while watching cartoons. Sometimes I'll remind him about that and he just says "Yep. Those were the good ole days."
my husband loves a teaspoon of chicken bouillon in a cup of boiling water (heat can be from a candle if necessary) so I bought the large jar at Costco. Its all about comfort and simplicity during hard times. Also, there is a lot less waste to throw out when you keep and clean every bottle plastic or glass, jar, wax paper pkg, cardboard box, wrapping, bread bag etc. My Mom would drink her coffee and then saving half she placed her saucer on top to cover. we thought this was comical because we never hesitated to throw out and use fresh but my mother remembered her days of never wasting anything. Actually both parents never forgot their bare bones days even in prosperity. It happens quick and usually unexpectantly.
We should have learned more from our wonderful ancestor but isn't that what we are doing right now? Reminding and learning anew? Thanks everyone. I have learned a lot here!
You can heat any canned food with a candle. Take the lid off and place the can above the candle. During the depression my grandfather would place a can of beans over the pilot light of the kitchen stove. By lunch time the can was ready to eat.
We used to mash those up and add mayo, mustard and relish for a sandwich spread. It's not something that you will learn in culinary school but when you are hungry it is delicious.
People who are not used to prepping don't understand the stress that comes with a food shortage. It has been proven that people who are in a stressful no food situation will not eat just anything. Especially children so it is important to have treat foods in your storage to try to make things somewhat normal. It also helps with food fatigue to have a little break from the mundane. My rule is store what you eat and eat what you store so it gets rotated. I'm not even a prepper but I have some extra food on hand.

I do this even now because in this apartment you don't know if the power may go out and the backup generator might not come back on so it won't go bad so quick
If you go to some of the grocery early they have markdown meat's. Many stores have sales. Kroger couple week had eggs for $.97 18 cart of eggs.
My son used to come home every day after school and eat a pack of ramen noodles for a snack. Crunch them up with no water and eat them while watching cartoons. Sometimes I'll remind him about that and he just says "Yep. Those were the good ole days."
Just ordered volumes 1&2 Dining on a Dime cookbooks! Excited to receive them☺️
EXACTLY In an emergency
my husband loves a teaspoon of chicken bouillon in a cup of boiling water (heat can be from a candle if necessary) so I bought the large jar at Costco.
Always great ideas. Thank you!!! God bless. 🙏🏻❤
Thank you
Canned cheese!!! Great idea ! FOOD FIGHT!!!! That will give everybody excercise too! I’m getting it! 2 fold benefits!
love you ladies.
You can heat any canned food with a candle. Take the lid off and place the can above the candle. During the depression my grandfather would place a can of beans over the pilot light of the kitchen stove. By lunch time the can was ready to eat.
Thank you for sharing this video with me.
I didn't see the outdoor working man's #1 Vienna sausages lol
We used to mash those up and add mayo, mustard and relish for a sandwich spread. It's not something that you will learn in culinary school but when you are hungry it is delicious.
Yasss!!!😋
She mentioned Vienna Sausages when she was going through a quick list of items.
You both look absolutely beautiful. Great tips!
I'm not even a prepper but I have some extra food on hand.
exactly right
A good salad is celery, raw broccoli, peanuts, onion, raw ramen noodles. Add salad dressing that you like.

Buy can of chick peas and other ingredients and make by scratch.
Very good list and you’re correct I do a lot of that without thinking “foods I don’t have to cook”. Thanks for making me think
